National Review: Obama ‘frequently forgoes the necktie’…just like the Iranian regime does.

One of the right wing’s favorite petty complaints about the Obama administration is over its dress code. Former Bush chief of staff Andrew Card has said that President Obama has brought a “kind of locker room experience” to the White House. The Washington Times yesterday published an account from an “observant source” who complained that “[f]lip-flops, tennis shoes, unbuttoned dress shirts with ties, and casual wear are now in style at the White House. Razors are out for men. Many male staffers seem to shave every couple of days.” Today, Andy McCarthy at the Corner takes another shot and in the same breath, invokes a comparison to the Iranian regime:

Derb, I’ve noticed that President Obama frequently forgoes the necktielately, even in public appearances. That reminded me — I have no idea why — that the Iranian regime has shunned the necktie ever since Khomeini pronounced it a symbol of Western decadence.

ThinkProgress has not yet found any correlation between how well a man does as President and how often he wears a necktie. And not surprisingly, the American public doesn’t think it’s a big deal either. But for the record, while President, Bush also occasionally ditched his tie:

bushties

Earlier this year, White House adviser David Axelrod responded to Card’s criticisms, saying, “We’re wearing short sleeves because we have to roll up our sleeves and clean up the mess that we inherited.”

    ___________

Well… it sure beats the kind of rustic, folksy “outhouse experience” Bush brought w/ him.

  3. Chuck Feney says:

First it was the flag lapel pin.
Next it was working in the Oval Office without a jacket.
Now it is absence of next tie.

    All lies.

At least, this president can tie his own shoelaces.

  4. The Republic of Stupidity says:

Or that unmistakable ambiance of “rolling in cow flops” that swatchie brings w/ him…

That was a hilariously stupid rebuttal even by your standards, watchdog. I suppose you’ll come back in five minutes and start whining that some “namestealer” was the one who really posted it.

The point is not whinning that Bush did it too, it is now they criticize Obama for the same things that Bush did. So we have to ask why are things that were ok then are not ok now? My guess: racism.

All the attacks on President Obama will not change the Bush legacy. Bush is a complete failure and a alcoholic/druggie and a total embarrassment to all Americans. We know many Americans, Republican Party and the KKK members hate our President so all this is not necessary we get your point.

  24. larkohio says:

I don’t care what any of them wear. I care about what they DO! If they work better in jeans, go for the jeans. Just get us some health care, some jobs, and govern this nation.
To equate the Obama administration to the Iranians is absolutely stupid. Obama won an honest election by a large margin. I voted for him, along with my fellow Americans because I wanted change. What he or his staff wears is irrelevant.

So let me see if I have this straight. Today we learned that the Bush administration raised Terror Alert levels to scare the American public in the hopes of improving Bush’s chances at re-election. We also learned that the Bush administration secretly hired Blackwater to execute targeted assassinations outside of combat zones.

And the National Review is criticizing our current sitting President for not wearing a tie — and somehow linking this to Iran?

I’d say it’s clear now. The National Review really does have its finger on the sphincter of american poltics. Long live the National Review!

McCarthy has a point about Obama not dressing in “traditional” Presidential attire. Perhaps Obama should wear a white wig, a frilly shirt, knickers, and button shoes like Washington, Jefferson, and early Presidents did. McCarthy wouldn’t have any negative to say then, would he? Would he?

More correctly, “Bush did the same thing that Bush supporters are vilifying Obama for doing.” But as usual, it’s not even anything important like prosecuting the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that Bush started. More like the “jackets in the Oval Office rule” that it turned out didn’t actually exist.

Lots of politicians take off their ties from time to time in the last few years. It’s not just Bush, Obama and Ahmeninejad.

Frankly, I think it’s none too soon. The necktie is an accessory that technically became obsolete around the time that buttons were invented and people could keep their shirts closed without an extra piece of fabric. If it weren’t for that goddamn Beau Brummel guy, they would have gone out of style over a century ago.

  119. Hoodathunk says:

Wow. Most of America lives in casual clothes, both for work and business. The only bunch that thinks suits are important are the rich types.

Ever see a farmer work the fields in a suit? A machinist make a part? A carpenter build a house? Yeah, and your plumber always wears a tuxedo when they clear a drain.

Most of America is about working so how come wearing a suit has come to stand for a President?

Or anyone who works for a living?

  120. Mr. Cobb says:

I wrote that wrong. I didn’t mean “listen to me.” Just listen to another perspective which I’ve really never really expressed but they knew I had. That sorta deal.

The people that think about the similarities of Iranian leaders and US leaders because of wearing or not wearing a tie are stupid. This is a non-issue and I’m amazed anyone would actually waste the time, as I id, in reporting on this story much less think about these things.. get a grip!!

  124. LeslieBurton says:

These critics just kill me. None them are half the well rounded man President Obama is. He’s so above it all.

  125. Hoodathunk says:

To tie or not to tie. That is the question. Whether to hold that a piece of silk about one’s neck will dictate the intelligence with in, ah, that is the rub.

And if one chooses to not have the rub call for the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, is this less of a calling for a man?

I am sure they would point out another famous tie wearer.

  129. Peter C says:

This blatant use of hyperbole once again proves that they have no legitimate criticism to offer. We should see all of these crazy statements as green lights to procede with an unabashedly liberal agenda. They’ve got nothing.

Ah, so neckties are a sign of “Western decadence”?

So not wearing one could be a sign of rebellion?

Hmm. I’m going to counter all that with the scientific idea that Andy McCarthy wears his neckties too tightly when looking at the big picture.

There were a few raised eyebrows, however, at the first portrait of a tie-less President to hang in the National Gallery.

    Heh

  137. Xisithrus says:

A tie less picture of a tie-less dent hanging in the National Gallery.

Blasphemy! What is an uncouth locker room painting doing destroying the integrity of the national gallery?

    Teh Absolute Horror!

  138. Parlezvous says:

How pathetic that the right wing Ministers of Stupidity would choose to malign President Obama for his dressing down on occasion. I suppose that the wing nuts are expecting Christ to arrive for the Second Coming dress in a tuxedo. Perhaps they will not join in on the trip to Paradise because it’s not formal enough. Oh, I forgot that so many of them won’t be invited along.

  139. celtic cynic says:

Does anyone else remember those pictures of our dear leader, george w bush, at the Beijing olympics where he was stoned out of his mind?
I don’t believe he was wearing a necktie then.

  140. J. Fred Smug says:

That reminded me — I have no idea why — that the Iranian regime has shunned the necktie ever since Khomeini pronounced it a symbol of Western decadence.

When you’re in the 24/7 business of smearing, “reminders” aren’t needed. It’s all about the smear, all the time. It becomes second nature – AS IF he had no idea why! Can you say “guilty conscience,” anyone?

William F. Buckley, Jr. must be rolling in his grave in light of the cesspool that National Review has become under Rich “Sarah Palin Makes Me Want to Wank” Lowry.

  141. wiley says:

I wouldn’t care if all of all Congress worked naked, if they would just pass that damned public option.

  142. kth says:

You guys forgot the picture where Bush is frenching the Saudi prince He took the tie off for that one, too.

  143. Lorne Woo says:

How dumb do you take us for, Ms Terkel ?

In your lame attempts to whoop us all into a frenzy, you conveniently omit some facts that we’re to assume you figured we had missed.

As dumb as Mr Card’s much discussed “locker room experience” remark may have been, Mr Card referred specifically to the Oval Office, not the “White House”. Not only is there no mention of the Oval Office in Ms Terkel’s lazy post, she cannot even supply a picture of a casuallly-dressed President Bush on the White House grounds, so she uses pictures from campaign rallies and summit meetings.

It’s as if TP has become Total Propaganda, and Ms Terkel its Goebbels.

Shame that true voices of dissent like WatchDog have to deal with nit-picking whiners trying to have him permanently banned. Shame also that it is you very same crybabies who are the True Voice of The Left.

  144. Purple State says:

Um…the Oval Office is IN the White House?

And we’re not talking about just the White House–we’re talking about “public appearances”, as suggested by Andy McCarthy. Ms. Terkel is pointing out the hypocrisy of that comment by showing the fact that Bush also did his work without a tie.

Oh, and thanks for the Nazi comparison. You stay classy.

  145. Lorne Woo says:

To The Oh So High and Mighty Purple State-

Your hero Terkel clearly says that Card ” has brought ‘a kind of locker room experience’ to the White House” when Mr Card was specific about his critique to the Oval Office, not to the rest of the White House grounds, not Crawford Tx, not Camp David. Terkel has diluted Card’s dumb comment to encompass more than for which it was intended, which was the Oval Office, you buffoon.

According to your hero Terkel, Card thinks that Obama should have been in jacket and tie the other day at the Grand Canyon. Sounds stupid, right?

Disingenuous journalism = Propaganda. Any way you slice it. You’re embarrassed for Terkel and you know it, Purple State. Noble of you, though.

  146. ElBruce says:

Here is a pic of Bush in the Oval Office without a jacket. Awaiting your apology.

Bringing up Card’s comment was relevant, because it’s a similar line of attack, in going after what Obama does or doesn’t wear as being sufficiently businesslike. You can nitpick all you want, but fact is that the similarity of the criticism is noteworthy, and was therefore noted.

  147. Marie says:

Aside from these photos of Bush – and there are numerous others – on my mind is indelibly imprinted the image of dumbya, going to New Orleans 4 days too late, standing there in his spotlights, (operated by the generators he brought in) with an unbuttoned shirt that looked to many like he buttoned it crooked. And in case anyone should forget, not only was he 4 days too late, but thost generators he brought with him to the darkened city were taken away as soon as he finished speaking.
He was also tie-less when he praised Michal Brown – you’re doin’ a helluva job, Brownie.”

Oh, the list goes on — but the whole topic is so stupid — this is just another lame attempt by some rightwing doofus trying rile up the mouth-breathers who are wathcing his show.

  148. Marie says:

For the trolls who are tsk-tsking — there are also many photos of Bush in the OVAL OFFICE in shirtsleeves.

  149. Lorne Woo says:

Yes, ElBruce. We all remember the picture just like we all remember Card’s stupid comment. Wasn’t hard for you to find, was it?

It would be nice if Terkel put in that effort, no?

So Marie, since you brought it up, should President Bush have been in Jacket/Tie in New Orleans?

    Who’s tsk-tsking now, Marie?

  150. wiley says:

How about Bush drunk as a skunk at the Beijing Olympics. Proud moment.

  151. Purple State says:

Here is the point I think we are trying to make; it really doesn’t matter what ANY President wears. Clothes do not make the man or the President; it is the President’s policies that need to be put under the microscope, not his threads.

Suit and tie are appropriate for international affairs, and I think it shows stature at the right time, but what right do we have to criticize what people wear when they are doing their work?

I don’t care if the President–Democratic, Republican, or any other Party–wears a spinning bow tie, clown shoes, or a solid-gold coat of armor. If he gets the job done at the end of the day, that is all that matters to me. If his policies irk you, then criticize his policies, not the clothing he wears when he implements those policies.

  152. ElBruce says:

    Lorne Woo says:

Yes, ElBruce. We all remember the picture just like we all remember Card’s stupid comment. Wasn’t hard for you to find, was it?

It would be nice if Terkel put in that effort, no?

Perhaps you should re-read the post at top. You seem to have grossly misunderstood what you read, and are frankly embarrassing yourself. Not only do you not know what you’re talking about, the rest of us are rapidly losing the ability to grasp your sputtering howls of outrage over something-or-other, as well. All I can make out is that you bitterly loathe Amanda Terkel with every fiber of your being… wait, are you one of those stalkers from the Factor? You are, aren’t you?

  153. Leftside Annie says:

Worn Loo – I have a nice tie I’d be glad to loan you – as long as you promise to hang yourself with it.

You’ve got a very long way to go to beat CrotchDog’s -45. Knock yerself out.

  154. EugeneDebs says:

    Lorne Woo says:

We know how dumb you are. That would be very VERY stupid. Lets say galactic level stupid. Glad I could help

  155. Mohabus says:

By using the Nation Review’s wonderful equation (as demonstrated by UCSBKitty), we discover that Lorne Woo is actually quite important. Let me explain.

Lorne Woo = ignorant, self-righteous moron = George W. Bush = President of the United States = Important Job = IMPORTANT! Lorne Woo for prez 2012!

  156. JustTruthPlease says:

Again, nothing substantial or meaningful coming from the right. It’s always superficial, petty gripes. Pathetic!

  157. CitizenE says:

The National Review is so conservative that they think napkins are a socialist takeover for bibs. Dab a little more over there sirs, you have egg on your faces.

i’m a conservative AKA repub. you wanna tried to put that neck tie on me, boy

  160. Mohabus says:

Yes, let’s prove that Republicans aren’t all obnoxious, macho-obsessed idiots by acting like…an obnoxious, macho-obsessed idiot.

I mean really…THAT’S your response? “Try to put that neck-tie on me, boy” (if you’re wondering why it looks different, it’s because I ran it through an English translator)? How old are you, 5?

See, this is why liberals and conservatives have such a hard time debating. Liberals, while attempting to stick to the high road (key word “attempt”; even the best of us have our bad days), often cower and end up backing off out of either fear, ultimately coming off as “spineless”. Conservatives, on the other hand, seem to have no trouble taking the low road (as demonstrated by the video of the woman yelling “Heil Hitler” at the Israeli man), and come across as little more than childish.

Moral of the story: If you don’t have anything significant/decent/contributing to say, then sit in the corner while the adults have their conversation, k?
