Sen. Jim DeMint says America ‘headed’ to becoming like Iran.

Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) appeared on Hugh Hewitt’s radio show today to continue his near daily rants against President Obama. DeMint, who has repeatedly boasted that he will “break” Obama by defeating health care reform, has made a habit of comparing government under Obama to fascism. This time, DeMint told Hewitt that immigrants from Iran tell him that America is going “down the road” to the type of government they had fled from:

DEMINT: And we’ve seen a lot of countries over the years collapse when they’ve gone down the road that we’re going down. Probably the most heart-wrenching experiences I’ve had over the last several days is when naturalized American citizens who have immigrated here from Germany, Iran and other countries, they come up to me and they say why are we doing what so many have fled from? Why don’t Americans see what we’re doing? And I’ve realized that these people who’ve lived under socialist type economies, and totalitarianism, they know where we’re headed if we don’t turn things around.

Listen here:

Rather than making his usual Nazi references, DeMint appeared to slam contemporary Germany as a country lacking freedom and suffering under “totalitarianism.” However, according to research by the Pew Charitable Trusts, Germany actually ranks far above the United States in upward economic mobility.

Update “The president is on a rampage with an agenda that has surprised everyone,” DeMint said.

  10. hormiga brava chavez says:

DeMint just keeps feeding the fringe with lies and nonsense. It’s the same BS: Obama is a Nazi or a fascist or a socialist! DeMint doesn’t know what in hell he’s talking about! I wonder if he can spell the word totalitarianism.

  11. Pennsylvanianne says:

Why doesn’t DeMint see what he and his ilk are doing to this country? If what these people from other countries are telling him is true, they are referring to him and the rest of the rightist wackos, who are attempting to merge church and state into a Talibamerica with a leadership who would tell us all what to think. And if the majority happened to elect a leader not to their liking, they would show up at his events fully armed. If we are headed to becoming like Iran, it is largely his and his party’s doing. The GOP would rather ruin the country than cooperate with Obama and come up with solutions to the huge problems Bush created. What children they are!

  12. WaltB says:

What an absolute Republikan horses ass! He obviously hasn’t a clue what a Democracy is, since he believes everyone should think like him – oh, wait a minute, isn’t that Nazi-ism? Communism? Socialism? Where’s this turd’s head at anyway?

  15. Xisithrus says:

Really? I dont see much difference in where we are going than under Bush. Same wars, same financial problems, same bailouts, same recession,

Actually, Senator DeMented (R – Tehran), we had a religious right-wing corporatist Republican dictatorship under the worthless lying Bush regime for eight long years, if you bother to think back nine months and before in 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002 and 2001. In many ways the Bush regime resembled religious dictatorships of the Middle East starting with an illegal seizure of power, followed by arrogance, bullying, stupidity and imperial wars. Any tyrant in the 19th century did the same thing as Bush did in the 21st century.

They provide the doctor’s appointment you’d otherwise have to pay $300 to get a signature on a prescription pad. If you’re charged that much on a whim, imagine just how fast $19,000 would go for other things.

We were better as a nation just a decade ago, and you’re here defending our degradation by popping names of foreign countries — third world or not.

  44. ElBruce says:

Tell you what, if we’re going to talk about French health care, let’s skip uncited wild numeric claims and try this – here’s a useful article from the center-right Businessweek to chew on.

Although in general I find France to be somewhat too Socialist (to the point where it significantly depresses their economy) it turns out their system isn’t exactly single-payer, but is actually a public/private hybrid that’s more similar to what we’re probably going to end up with. So it’s actually less socialist than Canada’s system, for example. And they still got the #1 ranking.

  45. ElBruce says:

Oh, one more thing regarding French health care being more expensive than U.S?

It’s just another plain flat-out lie, as I suspected.

  48. hormiga brava chavez says:

marwick @ 47 – GIVE IT UP! You’re using a bad analogy! We’re not going through that in America and as far as I know – the French aren’t complaining about their health insurance costs or their income! They’re not being raped and robbed by insurance companies like Americans are!

  49. tbone says:

    Marwick:
Perhaps if I didn’t need a car and received public support for health care and college, it wouldn’t be much different. Plus, I wouldn’t have taxes going to support 2 wars.

There are far too many people with the ability to pay premiums that have been tossed on the garbage heap by the health insurers.

What is that the stupid little white-wingers fail to grasp?

Using the google for Average or median French income, I find:

3,093 euros/month (average gross income) in June 2007 so probably a little more now. With the present exchange rate, it is the equivalent of $58,000/year.

In 2005, the disposable income (= net income after direct taxes) was 29,696 euros/year (average) or 25,205 euros/year (median) per household.
    http://www.insee.fr/fr/ffc/chifcle_fiche…

in 2005, a couple with 3 or more children had a net disposable income of 45,398 euros whereas as single person’s was 16,888 euros. Add 2% to 3% for a 2008 estimate.

Back to the uninformed wingnut bullshit on France further up this thread: from the official French government site “www.diplomatie.gouv.fr/en/” this little tidbit…”According to international comparisons, French households are among those who spend most and save most. Each year, they save 15% of their income.” So, howzzat compare to our 2008 savings rate of not quite one percent?

And…”Income inequality: 3.45, ratio of top 10% household income to bottom 10%” No comment on comparison here.

AND…..”Working hours per week (effective): 35.9 (Germany: 35.8; UK: 35.7)”

AND…”Pre-tax average monthly salary: €2440″…(and here’s my comment: that equates to roughly $2700, or $32400 per year. http://www.worldsalaries.org/usa.shtml states the average US salary income for the latest year it compiles, 2005, is $18516 per annum, the AVERAGE U.S. salary. So don’t try to tell us the French are lacking in the take-home department)

Plus….”Retirement: Average retirement age: 58.8 years (EU-25 average: 60.9 years)”

Now then. A Jim DeMint cannot be taken seriously. But the bull he and others like him spout daily is taken as gospel by too many folks who are just indoctrinated or too dumb to think for themselves. The US is a great country to live in: I know. I grew up in California, lived in Germany for 20 years, came back to California and am now retired in Arkansas. BUT there’s a whole world out there that often does things better than we do, and we should be able to learn. And he won’t be the last. As a former DeMint intern described herself on his website: “I am a rising Junior at Sweet Briar College, a small women’s college in Virginia, with a major in government, focusing on counterterrorism, and a double minor in dance and communications. My ultimate goal is to be elected president of the United States.”

  109. Xisithrus says:

The reasom, if ever, we became like Iran, with a religious dictator, would be if we dont follow constitutional law.

The framers of the Constitution put the decision-making power on war in Congress because “they felt that war was a disaster and the Executive was too prone to war,” Velvel said. Today, with regard to war “we have inverted the constitutional plan, and war is decided upon not by Congress, but by the President.”

Velvel, who has written extensively on the issue, said the only power the Founders left to the President was his authority to repel an immediate attack on American lives, property or territory—a power he cannot lawfully inflate into a continuing war. The Founders “deliberately rejected the British system in which the king made the decision to go to war, with his powers being facilitated because he had a standing army, could provide navies, and could raise monies for the armed services,” Velvel pointed out.

He said the Founders “wanted a decision so momentous for the people to be made not by one man or a small group of men in the Executive, but by the people’s representatives in Congress,” which is why the Founders wrote the declaration of war clause.

He went on to say the Founders made the President Commander-in-Chief not to impose military control over the civilian authority, “but for the very opposite reason: so that a civilian authority would be in control of the armed forces.”

Velvel said Founder Alexander Hamilton “made clear in The Federalist that as Commander-In-Chief the President was only the top general, as it were. He could not, in his military capacity, displace civilian authority” nor start a war but “could only command the armed forces once a war starts.”

Gee, seems what Velvel lines out has being happening for a while, Mr Demint.

No, no, Senator DeMint. That statement only exists in the fuzzy parts of your mind. Although a life long Republican at 76 years now, I shall re-register before the next General Election. I am finally making this move because of the extreme hatefulness that exists in our Grand Old Party these days. Plus, I feel that so much of the rhetoric coming out of the mouths of Republicans is very unGodly. I have no other choice than to leave or if I even tried to stay, it would be a big lie that I supported the disgusting stands of the GOP. Mostly, I feel that the GOP has little concern for the less fortunate. As a retired registered nurse I have seen the horrors people go through after years of neglect within our health care system. For the Obama Health Care Plan alone, I feel compelled to switch. But you see, I am not alone. Here in Arizona there are many who will join me in a switch of partys. The Republican Party of my mother’s era is dead and gone now. The bones that are left have no soul nor compassion either. God help Republicans get in touch with the horrible suffering of so many so they help get the health care overhaul right.

No, but it started us down a path that the banks were unable to recover from.

I won’t “attack” you as it seems that you love to dish it out, but can’t take it, but if memory serves me correctly I remember Congress being Republican during the Clinton years, i.e., “B.J. in the White House”. My studies of the Constitution have given me the fact that it is the Congress that passes laws.

    2. Bush enacted the Patriot Act. Not Obama.

    4. Bush’s policies against the ‘axis of evil’ was what soured relations with Europe and the rest of the world.

    5. Bush’s – and by rote Wall Street’s – policy of giving homes to people unable to afford them, as well as easing laws that fought monetary corruption during his presidency, is what caused the recession we are in.

How many American soldiers have already died for his war for Islam?

Both the Afghanistan and Iraqi wars were started under Bush. 2001 and 2003, respectively.

Although I do not yet see the tie to “Facism”, which can basically be defined as an oppressive Socialistic government with high levels of corruption, I do see big government and big spending, followed by bigger government and bigger spending as a means to make recessions (the natural correction to the over-valueing products and services) last longer and longer – thus putting off the inevitable pain that must accompany an economic correction. The difference between Europe or Iran and the United States is that we have become an instant gratification society that can not and will not accept the fact that in life there are winners and losers (a liberal ideology). As we drift further and further left as a country we will also slip further further into debt and moral decay. In summary – I agree with Mr. Demint’s conservative ideology but think his rhetoric is a bit extreme. As a soldier that has served in Europe and southwest Asia I will say that we still enjoy the cleanest and one of the most prosperous countries on the planet. I am encouraged to see that people accross the country have come out of their cacoons and are starting to become engaged in debate that makes democracy the most desired form of government on the planet too.

The illegal “felon” purge even purged a Democratic Congresswoman, for crying out loud. She was, of course, a Democrat. DeMint’s efforts to tie the current conservative German government to Hitler is just plain stupid. DeMint is not alone in the stupid department when in comes to the Republican leadership.

The National Socialist Party of the 20’s and 30’s worked very closely with wealthy industrialists and bankers to make a more “business-friendly” environment, with the industrial and banking groups agreeing not to interfere in the Nazi social policy in exchange for less regulation in matters of finance and labor.

Big business and big banks joined the Nazis in the endorsement of a strong military, an all-encompassing police presence, emphasis on “traditional” German and Nordic values and the villification of “outsiders,” particularly Jews, but also Gypsies and Slavs.

That business and financial cabal looked the other way while elections were suppressed and rigged, civil liberties were immediately curtailed, political opposition was silenced and censorship in the arts and literature was implemented. News organizations and journals which opposed the policies of the Third Reich were summarily closed down.

Does any of this sound familiar to you?

President Obama and the Dems do not indulge in this stuff. The repiggies, under the aegis of the Bush/Cheney regime, did their best to implement much of what the Third Reich saw as admirable and patriotic.

There are intelligent repiggies, students of history, who have cravenly chosen to play the manipulator, pulling the puppet strings of the utterly stupid and the poorly educated nitwits out there, the same sort of morons that donned the brown shirts and became the violent rabble in service of the Third Reich.

DeMint is not one of those intelligent repiggies. DeMint is simply a moron and a nitwit, with barely a passing acquaintance with the history of the 20th century.

Again, why do the repiggies put ignoramuses such as DeMint, Palin, Grassley, Sessions and the like in positions of power?

Please note the constant intertwining of “religion” with a mythic representation of a pure, clean American past. This repiggie fetish is directly out of the Third Reich playbook.

If anybody is talking to DeMint today from Iran, that person was most likely a supporter of the Shah and among the over-class in the pre-Revolutionary Iran. This person isn’t concerned about economic mobility. They’re concerned about the peons forcing the aristocrats to disgorge their ill-gotten gains. I can understand why DeMint is concerned. He doesn’t want this nation to finally enforce criminal laws against members of his class, after they’re being exempt for so long. DeMint ought to be glad that nobody is talking yet about bringing back Madame Guillotine for his kind.

Nor do I agree with ANY of the crap coming from the Dems. Pure partisan, not even caring about what other people think. Say anything, Senator. You’re circling the drain.

    nonsense101 says:

“How much more of our freedom will Obama steal from us?”

    All of it! Trust me.
I suggest you leave the country, while you still can!

…and take the rest of the trailer park with you.

    Germany, Iran…

    South Africa….”

As a South African I’d like to point out that you do not know what you are talking about. Since we got rid of the “facist” rightwing Nationalist “Christian” government in this country the average standard of living of our people has increased including healthcare and education. Yes we have our problems, like so many countries, including crime! Hey you had George Buish for 8 years – give me crime any day!

  172. Lora says:

    To nonsense 101,
Your post is perhaps the foulest, most demented and most ignorant I have read here yet. I don’t have the time nor energy to refute all your blather, so I will take up just one: Obama’s bowing to the Saudi king, which you wingnuts have made such a fuss over, while conveniently ignoring all the pictures/videos of George W. Bush holding hands and even kissing the same monarch. Goodness! I hadn’t realized how much you wingnuts really support homosexual relations.

  173. USMSee says:

When are we going to read about this guys mistress? Republicans have lost most of their charm. What they sound like are a bunch of whining children.

  174. LividLib says:

    USMSee says:

“When are we going to read about this guys mistress? Republicans have lost most of their charm.”

    Charm?
    You mean like Cheney charm?
    They still have it!

headed toward being a Muslim theocracy? gonna be one hell of a trip….

  176. Winski says:

So let’s see..DeMinted now gets his talking points from Dick Armey and Eric Prince!!! Great combo….Maybe the three of them can be room mates at Supermax !! Tyrone would love these three..

  177. hgs3 says:

WHAT! Before you use big words like fascism jd shouldn’t you know the definition? As a citizen of the great state of South Carolina jim demented might have a point though in that the religious right, that he caters to, does bare a strong resemblance to the mullas of iran and we may well be going islamo fascist here but I’d personally blame the previous administration for that.

  178. SmoothCriminal says:

Well, Jimmy it would seem as if you and others like you are trying “your best” to make it so and all because Obama is President.

Don’t think that we are not wise to what you are trying to do.

    JUST LOOK AT THIS

American flags not welcome at oil Astroturf rally.
At a “grassroots” rally organized by the American Petroleum Institute in Houston on Tuesday, activists bearing American flags were turned away
    .

    ARE THESE FRIENDS OF YOUR’S??????

People who actually carried the Americn Flag were turned away – what’s that all about, Jimmy?

Next, you and others like you will not want to drape our fallen soilders in the American flag when they return home from a war that your beloved ‘bush’ started.

You bet we are watching what “you all” are doing. Therefore, in that regard American may just have to go through the same thing that people in Iran went through.

DO YOU WISH THAT TO HAPPEN? My guess is that: “yes you do.”

    RetiredSailor says:

I didn’t just blame Clinton for our economy woes. I stated that he force fed the CRA down the banks throats. I don’t care if you believe me or not.
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

So you said that huh? Of course I dont believe you since is patently stupid. The CRA was passed in the 70’s. It was amended under Bush 1 and Clintons tweaking of the bill was nothing but deregulatory. Making interstate banking easier for instance. Since you have no idea what you are talking about I guess you are just telling us what Rush TOLD you to think. Thats ok we have heard this one a dozen times before. It doesnt make any sense but then you cells of the Limborg rarely do

Continue to stick your head into the sand and think your far left leaders are above reproach. But, the CRA was the catalyst to the recession we are in now. Was it he sole reason? No, but it started us down a path that the banks were unable to recover from.

  180. Mugsy says:

DeMint is behind the curve here…

Iran has no public health program. Iran still has the Death Penalty, and (only until recently), like Iran, the U.S. was run by a bunch of religious nuts that live to blur the separation between church & state.

Sorry Jim, but the government is finally PULLING BACK from becoming more like Iran.

  181. Mark701 says:

First off I wonder how much dough he gets from medical insurers and their lobbyists. Second, if America heads down the same road as Iran i.e. a theocracy, it won’t be because of liberals but due to the paranoid, bible thumping crazies and gun toting conservatives that I wouldn’t trust to walk a dog, let alone run a country.

  182. Whatthe says:

Why does everyone think France has a better healthcare system?
Just because the WHO sais it is, does’nt really mean it is! Any one can get free healthcare here!!! Just go to a hospital, they can not refuse you!! I know people who have done it. And it works! It’s free!!
If it’s so great in France, then move there!

  183. MapleStreet says:

    Whatthe,

if you are in imminent danger, the ER can’t refuse you. If you have a non-life threatening injury, you’ll just have to wait till it becomes life threatening.

High Blood pressure – you just have to wait till it goes up a little higher.

Kid with an ear infection – let ‘em cry till the infection spreads into the brain cavity or invades the bloodstream.

  184. MapleStreet says:

Oh, should have added, going to the ER is the most expensive way to be treated. Ever seen an ER bill for sewing up a simple laceration ?

To recup its costs for all those people going to the ER without the means to pay, the hospital has to “share” it with the people who have insurance.

Cost of the uninsured to the insured is estimated at several thousand dollars per year.

  185. takeoption3 says:

I’ve lived in SC for over 28 years now. I’m SO embarassed by the fools and idiots this poor (literally) state has managed to elect.

  186. Keith says:

    Whatthe,

Have you ever used the ER? I have. It is not free. They send you a *&^%$#@ BILL. Tis bill can easily go into the thousands of dollars. In every other developed country in the world, it is “free”.

  187. Keith says:

Yeah, what makes you think the World Health Organization knows more about health than Whatthe??? snark

  188. lvdragonlady says:

WTH? – we were border lining on a dictatorship when bush/cheney were in office. The GOP has lost what little bit of sanity that it had and they are now riding on the wing nut express.

  189. denmore says:

    Wow…So much to address.

For one, I WAS a Branch Manager for Bank of America. I dont’ care if you believe me ore not. No, I am not racist. If I was – it would be against the whites. I’m black. So, now I get to hear all the “Uncle Tom” remarks next – right?

The CRA has been and is the cause of our economy woes. Period. If you look at my post further up – I stated that it was passed under Carter then pushed down the throats during Clinton’s reign.

To the self proclaimed white woman above me who says she understands the “Wise Latina” remark and believes it. I have to disagree with you. Personally, I believe that all races are equal. I don’t believe that any one race is better then another – we are ALL created in the image of god.

Funny, all I hear on here is garbage going off on “right wing nuts” or “Christian Fundamentalist”. You my friends are no better then they are. As soon as you find out someones opinion differs from your own – you immediately attack them versus arguing the points. Also, why is it that you attack Christians, but fail to mention all the good they do in the world?

So stick to your biased opinions, run from the facts that are shown to you and live your life in the little bubble Obama has created for you. I’m not angry at anyone here….I feel sorry for you.

  190. Lora says:

    to dentroll,

I agree that all races are equal or at least should be equal. I also believe that women are not inferior to men. But we all have different experiences, and the perspective of a wise Latina, with her unique background, will most likely be different from that of Justice Roberts, for example, and much needed, I think, just as Justice Ruth Ginsburg could understand and emphasize with the humiliation felt by a young girl, who was needlessly strip-searched, in a way that some of her male colleagues couldn’t.
Finally, I personally don’t care whether or not you believe I am white or even a woman, for that matter.

  191. EugeneDebs says:

    Whatthe says:

Well you are an idiot. Emergency care is NOT healthcare. If you need ongoing care to live you will DIE. So the WHO is wrong just because YOU say so? Please. Isnt it time for Rush to tell you what to think?

  192. EugeneDebs says:

    denmore says:

No it isnt. So you said that. All that shows is you are a MORON. The CRA was passed in the 70’s if it is the cause of all our problems they sure took a long time to develop. All Clinton did to the CRA was to deregulate the banks which most conservatives love. Yeah I think you are lying. Or you are exceedingly stupid if you were manager of a bank and didnt know CRA was passed in the mid seventies. Actually you only believe that because Rush told you to and you are too stupid to think for yourself.

Yeah and the wise latina argument doesnt dispute that in any way. What she said in the context of talking about DISCRIMINATION cases is she would hope a wise latina would make better judgements. That is her experiences would be different and LEAD to better judgements again you only know about this what rightwing screechmonkeys have told you since you are exceedingly brainwashed.

I never thought I was better than anyone. Thank God however I am not as STUPID as you are. I love the way you snivel about us attacking people then go on your own attack. So you are not only stupid but also a hypocrite. Good job. I love to laugh at people as stupid as you

  193. whatizz says:

Senator Demint-what is the unemployment rate in your state? How many people lack health care in your state. I was led to believe that your party of family values was working to help all the people of your state.Perhaps you should help your “traveling” governor to help win back the respect and love of his family. The people of South Carolina would be better served by that instead of your ramblings on socialism. You have to know what socialism is to speak about it.

  194. JD says:

I am one of those Iranian-Americans that the senator is talking about. As much as I dispise the totaleterian Iranian regime, I love president Obama and his policies. I don’t see any comparison between our president and the Iranian regime. In fact, the health care system in Iran is the same as the US.

Unless, he is comparing the dictatorship. If that’s the case, he is too late, since cheney/bush are gone! We now have a president that we can all be proud of. We should all help the president to do his job right.

Long Live the United States of America!
