New poll finds that 77 percent of Americans still support the public option.

In recent weeks, the fate of the public option in new health care legislation has been uncertain. Yet, while the issue continues to be hotly debated in the halls of Congress, a new poll by Survey USA finds that the idea is as popular as ever amongst the American public:

More than three out of every four Americans feel it is important to have a “choice” between a government-run health care insurance option and private coverage, according to a public opinion poll released on Thursday.

A new study by SurveyUSA puts support for a public option at a robust 77 percent, one percentage point higher than where it stood in June.

The SurveyUSA poll finds similar results to several other polls that also show that the public option is very popular, a fact that some members of Congress consider to be a detriment.

And well they should! 77% of the U.S. population is smart & sane!! The rest are inbred Repubs, it seems.

Wait! Doesn’t the Publican Senate membership want 75 – 80 votes for healthcare reform? Why aren’t they looking at this 75-80 to make damned sure a strong public option plan is created??

  5. eyeswideopen1 says:

Faux poll out today (kidding) shows 89% oppose reform…..they also believe the world is flat and the moon is made of cheese!

When you peel away all of the craziness, it comes down to Americans needing a choice in Healthcare. It is not that difficult of a concept.

It will be interesting to see if this poll is mentioned on any of the networks.

I’ve been posting for a little while on this site, so bear with me for MY story.

I’m 62 years old. A Vietnam Vet and a platoon leader, A Red Cross Volunteer, and finally retired early from working at our local food bank…I had to retire because I could not perform my normal activities because I have COPD (lung disease).

Today I was turned down for the third time in my effort to get health insurance. Do you think I’m a little “frustrated”? . I’ve worked hard my whole life and this is how I’m rewarded.

To see these freaking Repubs act like there is a conspiracy to a Government takeover for Health Insurance really ticks me off.

I’ll bet Limpball actually laughs out loud when he realizes how easy it is for him to bullshit his sheep of an audience.

  14. JMOHR says:

Yet we see a President and Democratic majority in the House and Senate ready to throw this all away. People wonder why I complain about the lack of backbone, organization and fighting spirit of the Democratic party. 77% of the public wants thiswhat more should be necessary. Indeed, we know that public support drops off the cliff if the public option is removed.

I am sick and tired of this phony desire for bi-partisanship. The evidence is clear that the Republicans have done nothing but obstruct from the very beginning of Obama’s term in office. This has gone far beyond letting the Republicans hang themselves. This is to the point of a total lack of guts on the Democrats part or fool hardy incompetence.

Our community needs to have a Come to Jesus discussion with the Democrats. Why? Because we either want them to stand up or destroy the party for something better. Gay rights, stimulus, executive comp caps and now on health care there has been nothing but a shameful retreat from positions that the Democrats and promised.

  21. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

What is very interesting about this poll is that they worded the question exactly the same way the June WSJ/NBC poll was worded. That poll showed that 76% of Americans favored the public option. Then in their poll the other day, WSJ/NBC took the word “choice” out of their poll.

Here’s how they worded it in the June poll:

34a. In any health care proposal, how important do you feel it is to give people a choice of both a public plan administered by the federal government and a private plan for their health insurance”"extremely important, quite important, not that important, or not at all important?

Here’s how they worded it in the poll the other day:

    9. Would you favor or oppose creating a public health care plan administered by the federal government that would compete directly with private health insurance companies?

This poll came up with 43% in favor and 47% opposed. This is a perfect example of how to skew a poll.

  22. Badger says:

Americans pay nearly TWICE as much for Medical Care as any other Industrialized Country… rank near the BOTTOM in Health Care Outcomes…have 50 Million Uninsured and another 50 Million Underinsured.

    WHY?? Bad luck??

NO …its because a Lot of people are making A lot of Money off of things the way they are. And those ,who have the power to change things, enjoy Excellent Health Care at the Public Expense.

These facts have caught up with 77 % of the Public. People under 65 want the same choices as those over 65.

    Democrats…Just Do it.

  23. MrWombat says:

But the media keeps telling me no one wants it. Who should I believe? /sarcasm

  24. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

The WSJ/NBC poll did ask, once again, about political affiliation. In the June poll 21% called themselves Republicans, in the poll the other day only 20% called themselves Republicans. Not looking good for them!

Veterans should receive no better care than any other US citizen. They should receive more specific care as their needs are different but every US Citizen should receive the health care they need. We don’t need the VA if we have health care for everyone. Quit the discrimination and take care of everybody…period.

Basically, do you favor the Obama plan?

    Yes = 51%
    No = 43%
    Not sure = 6%
    MOE = +/- 2.9%

  30. rj1008 says:

  31. Buckie Boy says:

    Alejandro@29:

The article is based on Question 2, not Question 6.

    From the Survey USA poll:

Question 2: “In any health care proposal, how important do you feel it is to give people a choice of both a public plan administered by the federal government and a private plan for their health insurance–extremely important, quite important, not that important, or not at all important?”

Question 6: “Now I am going to tell you more about the health care plan that President Obama supports and please tell me whether you would favor or oppose it. The plan requires that health insurance companies cover people with pre-existing medical conditions. It also requires all but the smallest employers to provide health coverage for their employees, or pay a percentage of their payroll to help fund coverage for the uninsured. Families and individuals with lower- and middle-incomes would receive tax credits to help them afford insurance coverage. Some of the funding for this plan would come from raising taxes on wealthier Americans. Do you favor or oppose this plan?”

Essentially, the American people support a Public Option (#2) more than helping families and regulating the insurance industry (#6), according to the questions posed. But Question #2 was definitely the highlighted statistic for this article.

  37. henry wallace says:

With the swish of a pen the Dems could give single payer to every citizen in the US today. Hope the figure it out.

  77. donaldinks says:

Whew…tonight, I have a lot upon my mind…concerning Americans without jobs, the ability to have decent Health Care…and why we can not.
Corporate Monopolies have not delivered “better products”…they now OWN your last choices of what you purchase, whether it be what you watch, the staples you buy and what you eat. “Corporates” have sealed their pact worldwide, and you haven’t a clue as to what is in the food they are selling.
Example: Look at what the past 15 or more years that the “world wide trade agreements” (I.E. “New World Order”) has delivered this Nation:
Toys filled with toxic crap (including lead, arsenic, etc….). for the sake of profit for the shareholders (and NOT for your family). We are subjugated to poisonous products such as Christmas Tree Lights and Ornaments imported from China…labeled with warnings about LEAD exposure…something we as Americans decided were a Health Hazard long ago. The Corporates have decimated our once powerful manufacturing base. Now, just about, any meaningful manufacturing job has been outsourced to countries that could not care less about what is safe or poisonous. We have no (or little) choice left but to become exposed to, once again, poisonous crap…but, hey…it’s CHEAP, right?
When you no longer have gainful employment and income…cheap doesn’t matter much.
We (the Greatest Nation and Lone Superpower) have tried to eliminate these poisons from exposure to our children, ourselves, our unborn, and our food chain…and they are now coming back, disguised as a inexpensive staple.
It’s called “exploitation”, or for a better analogy …”outsourcing slavery”… all for CHEAP GOODS.
    Why?
    PROFIT.
The insidious part of it all is Corporations and shareholders do not care about your health, or the poisons they are “re”importing …it’s just PROFIT.
For those of you who once upon a time had a guaranteed PENSION and were enticed into “401k plans”…how is that working for you now?

Imagine if George W. had succeeded in getting you to “op-out” of Social Security and “investing ” your last pittance of a retirement cushion into Wall Street? What would you have left now?
The Corporates have won, up until now…but I STILL have HOPE things will change.

    marine73,

How many of those you’ve met are in favor of the status quo???

IMHO, it’s only funny if you aren’t facing a serious health care crisis.

Fox news and the republicans have done their BEST to convince Americans that the “Public OPTION” is government taking control of the health care system. With such misinformation out there, I’m Not surprised you got the response you did.

I just took a poll for myself to find out where the REAL Americans stood on health care….1st question: Do you support health care with the public option? 37% said yes! Then I ask: Do you support health care with the public option if we throw in a free all-day-sucker after a free flu shot. 47% said yes! Last question: Do you support the public option with the FREE all-day-sucker AND if we add a pair of FREE sneakers from NBC and 57% said YES! There you have it……shoes and suckers make Obama a happy man as he can now say that with the help of NBC he is a successful corporate businessman.

My dad is a disabled vietnam vet. Retired from the VA Hospital (25+ years in Medical Administration). My mom has worked with numerous hospitals through her long career as a medical transcriptionist. Both of them are VEHEMENTLY opposed to the public option and all the other currently proposed health care reform. I haven’t discussed it in depth with them, but I trust their point of view based on their experiences, and mine growing up as their son. They are smart and reasonable people. I would also venture to say that their point of view is NOT the minority.

  94. raaaa says:

It’s been unbelievable reading the blogs on YouTube, but yes, the tide is turning.

I’ve asked, and nobody can answer this basic question:

How can you defend health insurance which skims 20% off the top of $2,400,000,000,000 and delivers healthcare 37th in quality, forces someone into bankruptcy every 30 seconds, leaves 1/3 of our population uninsured, excludes pre-existing conditions, kicks you out at the slightest chance if you need coverage, and encourages sickness and drugs rather than preventative health?

Nobody ANYWHER can answer the above question; instead they call names, spew hatred, threaten revolution, say unspeakable things about our leaders, quote blatant lies, and spread fear and hatred.

I understand health insurance is spending about $1.3 million a DAY in negative propaganda and lies (unverified — that actually sounds too low). The funny thing is, they seem to have a select group of a few hundred (or less) VERY vocal critics on YouTube, who use a variety of screen names to say the same exact nonsense. But NONE OF THEM can justify why they are for the insurance racket. They can only spout hatred and lies.

They are like storybook demons from hell trying to convince you that heaven is not for you — join them in the filth, fire and brimstone. But they can’t tell you WHY.

  95. EugeneDebs says:

    PaulMorphy says:

  96. PaulMorphy says:

How can you defend health insurance which skims 20% off the top of $2,400,000,000,000

No citation for this source but of course, you are not “required” to use one particular insurance company. There are many to choose from and the vast majority are happy with their coverage. In fact, I have never heard of anybody being turned down for health care in the USA. Any illegal or legal alien, money or no money, can walk into any hospital and be treated for FREE. I’ve never seen ANYONE denied care. And next time you see a homeless bum pass out on the street, see how long it takes for an ambulance to come wailing up the street to take the guy up to the hospital. — We already have free care for all…

and delivers healthcare 37th in quality,

This is a canard. People come to the USA for the best care — no country in the world has better. And in fact the older you are, the better off you are in the USA…try looking up the statistics on this one (Mark Steyn wrote a good article on this recently)

forces someone into bankruptcy every 30 seconds, leaves 1/3 of our population uninsured, excludes pre-existing conditions, kicks you out at the slightest chance if you need coverage, and encourages sickness and drugs rather than preventative health?

Many people on this website seem to live under the delusion that it is the responsibility if someone other than themselves, to take care of their health. If you get sick, I don’t think its fair that I should have to pay for it…and I certainly don’t think you should pay for mine…

    Nobody ANYWHER can answer the above question;

I just answered each of the above comments, and they are all very reasonable answers, regardless of whether you like what I wrote.

This is a canard. People come to the USA for the best care — no country in the world has better.

Your mom’s a canard. What that is, is from a ranking of all nations by the World Health Organization. 36 other nations provide better care, with France at the top. That is a fact.

Some people also leave the USA to get the best care; rich people go to the best hospital for what they need, wherever that may be in the world. Sometimes that means coming here, sometimes it means going from here to somewhere else. Unless you’ve got a fairly gathered statistic, you ain’t got squat.

I pay for a fire department to put out your house when it is on fire. That’s both so I don’t have to live in a world where every other block is scorched to the ground, and to reduce the chances of my house catching on fire. Also because I’m a decent person.

Where is the evidence of this wholesale coming to the US of people for healthcare that the right always talks about? Sure if you are RICH Johns Hopkins is about as good as it gets but working class peole are NOT leaving Europe and coming to the US for healthcare and guess what YOU arent going to Johns Hopkins anyway. Also WHY is it so good? The HUGE amount of government subsidies for their studies and reseach MIGHT have something to do with it,

YOU seem to be under the DELUSION that we are FORCED to live in your fantasy Randian economic Darwinism. We are NOT. We CAN decide that we are all in this together like we did when we enacted SS and again when we started Medicare. If YOU dont like it you can go live on an Island and take all your libertarian friends so we can watch you re-enact the Lord of the Flies.

  103. DNVigerJr says:

If people had not been brainwashed by Big Brother Government being led by Emporer Obama, they would know better than to support a Government Option to anything. There is nothing that the Government has sponsored that hasn’t gone bankrupt!
The Government could easily change the rules to permit intrastate purchase of health insurance, lowering costs; there could be implimented rules that insurance companies cannot deny coverage for pre-existing conditions, and you could have extensive tort reform to lower medical costs, and get rid of illegals from using up emergency rooms for cases of the sniffles, at our expense. None of the fix-its need a Government Option.
So why the Government Option? To take over Health Care, Socialize it, and have one more things to rule over, and control our lives. No Country with public option Government-run health care is without rationing, especially with the elderly, without horrible waiting for immediately needed health care, MRI’s, tests, critical medication, exams, etc. Just look at Canada, the UK, France…all with inferior health service to the USA.
The only fix the Government offers is the fix of freebies for the mostly lazy Americans who don’t want to work and make health care a serious priority! The Dems are about power over us, and using hand-outs to weaken us and make us more dependent on them. It’s a spiral to mediocrity, kills incentive, free enterprise, jobs, and growth. Once you are in its grip, you are doomed, and can’t go back. There is always a place for the truly indigent due to no fault of their own to get medical and emergency help. The rest can, if they want, get help on their own.
Any more give-away programs will bankrupt us, and the rich will eventually flee, and take their businesses and jobs elsewhere, and we will become a two bit Country. If 70 % of the Country wants that, and doesn’t get it…what’s really going down, then its proof that we are dumbed down, and deserve what we get. I just hope when all the dumb young people who voted for Emperor Obama, the novelty act, when they are old and really need a hip replacement, they won’t mind when the best they get, as Obama promised, is a pain pill.

But again, your premise is flawed — You are a priori assuming that individuals have the RIGHT to be treated by a health care professional — it is incorrect.Like it or not, you have NO constitutional right to medical treatment in the USA. Not only that, you would be happy to trample EVERYONE’s constitutional rights by enacting an opressive system that forces people to pay for someone else. If you feel that humans should be given care, you can donate your time and money of your own free will — you can even get to gether with your friends and create a charity or a free clinic, or a foundation if you like — but stop trying to force everyone else to do it. Furthermore, your are also quite naive to believe that governments enact socialized health care systems for compassionate and altruistic reasons — under such a system, you will soon find that your state run care is no more concerned about helping people than the insurance companies. In fact, the care will be worse, because the state institution will be under no pressure to perform efficiently due to competition –their only interest will be reducing costs.

I know Rush TOLD you to think this so you are obligated to pretend it makes sense but in fact it is utter moronity. By the ignorant and specious logic the right is using to say this. Highways, rural electrification, the CDC, the Air Force, FBI, small busineess administration the FDA and much more would be unconsitutional and we would live in a third world country.
