Colorado Democratic headquarters vandalized.

A “vandalism spree” hit the Colorado Democratic Party headquarters in Denver today, where the “vandal allegedly used a hammer to smash” 11 windows. Party Chairwoman Pat Waak attributed the violence to the intensity surrounding the health care debate, saying, “Clearly there’s been an effort on the other side to stir up hate. I think this is the consequence of it.” Waak estimated the damage at approximately $11,000. The Denver Police Department reportedly has a man in custody regarding the incident. ThinkProgress obtained some pictures of the damage:

Update The Denver Post reports that the vandal, Maurice Joseph Schwenkler, worked for a Democrat in 2008, but now belongs to a "local radical protest group." "[I]t appears possible that Schwenkler ascribes to neither political ideology," writes the Post.

This next decade is going to make the 90’s look like nothing. Remember Oklahoma City, Ruby Ridge, the Branch Davidians, the Militias, the Neo-Nazis and everything else? Yeah, it’s going to be much worse this time.

They probably shouldn’t have established all of those anti-terrorism laws and organizational structures if they want to get away with this stuff again though…

Yes and this hate is based in stupidity which makes it politically illegitimate to say the least. I am told that the FBI really has their hands full right now.

How many of you had to deal with Obama/Biden yard signs being stolen or defaced?

That was a problem for quite a number of folks.

This stuff didn’t just start today.

It’s been building for quite a bit of time now, egged on by the talk radio crazies and FoxNews.

As said before, the wingnut monsters have left the barn open and have run wild thanks to the creator, the Victor Frankenstein GOP party. Not only the health care debate that has stirred the pot of hate among the wingnuts but again the media will not clearly admit that many of the wingnuts who cling on to their pearls everyday have still not getting over the fact that a bi-racial President is now the occupant of the WH. This is all about change that President Obama is bringing to this country and to restore the principles of this country in which has been less respected around the world. And the wingnuts are resisting change, and lobbyists, corporate businesses, certain lawmakers want things status quo.

In the long haul, the repiggies are doing a fabulous job in alienating the non-psychotic and the reasonable.

They may have the votes of the bullies, racists and lunatics, but they are causing many of their long-time non-crazy party members a great deal of angst.

Please remember this, folks, with the upcoming local elections this fall.

If you vote for any repiggies, no matter how reasonable they may sound to you,
they will sit back and cheer on the vandalism, the guns and the bullying, or worse, because that is what they truly accept.

If they didn’t, they would have left the repiggie ranks by now.

This will just get worse you know. Aleady Limpballs, Beck and the other Right-wingers are calling they’re goons to arms. With their nasty rhetoric and implying Obama wants to kill granma, these losers don’t need any more incentive to become violent. And you know what pisses me off? These as*holes will never accept any blame for what they have done. Remember Dr. Tiller? Nobody ever talks about how complict the Right-wingers were in that man’s murder. Disgraceful.

I only hope that those instigating all this violence understand that they have lit a very dangerous and mindless fuse not easily extinguished.

It’s funny that the thing to get these people worked up is offering to help others more efficiently and less expensively. How utterly terrible!

I’ve offhandedly commented that I wish we had health care systems like Canada and I’m frequently told about how people in such countries pay way more taxes than I do. I suppose that’s better than breaking the glass in my apartment, though.

My thought is always “fine, I’ll pay more freaking taxes!”. At least I’ll know what it’s going to and I’ll get a clear, personal benefit out of it. Something tangible I can point to and say, oh, that’s what I’m paying for. I don’t feel like I have that anymore and every day my money is going to stranger things that are even less explained.

I suppose that reaction doesn’t help much because taxes are apparently an “enemy” in all situations to these people. But you know, what I’m not paying in taxes in these cases winds up coming out my pocket TENFOLD when I have to cover premiums, deductibles and so forth that are made even worse do the “risks” of people who can’t get covered at all in the first place under this system.

The cause and effect are related.

    It’s very frustrating to me.

And now they are crying, give me back my country when an administration is trying to actually give the taxpayers some of their money back.

According to the Denver Post, the person in custody is a participant in Progressive causes

    http://www.denverpost.com/recommended/ci_13199902

A 24-year-old arrested this morning on suspicion of smashing 11 windows at Colorado Democratic Party headquarters tried to conceal his identity while allegedly committing the crime, according to police descriptions.

Maurice Schwenkler wore a shirt over his face, a hooded sweatshirt and latex gloves before he and another man fled the scene on bicycles, police said. Schwenkler after a short chase. The other suspect remains at-large.

While Schwenkler does not appear in the state’s voter registration database, a person by that name in November 2008 received $500 from a political 527 committee called Colorado Citizens Coalition for “communications,” according to campaign finance disclosuares.

The accountant for the 527 appears to be the same woman who handles the books for many other Democratic-leaning political committees.

A Maurice Schwenkler also signed an online 2005 petition to free anti-war Christian protestors who were captured in Iraq.

Just checking – the Colorado Teacher’s union contributed $200,000 last fall to the Colorado Citizens Coalition to support Progressive candidates

    http://www.independentteachers.org/category/colorado-education-association/

20 Oct Colorado Education Association Nears $900,000 in Political Contributions, Almost 99% to Democrats
Author: bdegrow // Category: Colorado Education Association, Political Contributions Information on political contributions by Colorado teacher organizations has been updated to reflect campaign reports through October 8. Here are the new totals. First, for CEA:

Through October 8, the Colorado Education Association (CEA) and its affiliates, mostly through Every Member Option funds, have reported $890,335 in political contributions during the current election cycle – including:

    * $422,635 to Democratic candidates and party organizations
    * $200,000 to the 527 group Colorado Citizens’ Coalition to support “progressive” political candidates

  46. Levi the Dungbeetle says:

Actually the Denver Post does not say that at all. The alleged connection between Maurice Schwenkler and the Democratic Party is that he took money from a 527 who’s accountant worked for other Democrat leaning PACs.

I wonder if my accountant is a wingnut.

The article does say that Maurice Schwenkler “signed an online 2005 petition to free anti-war Christian protestors who were captured in Iraq.” I know a lot of Republicans are Christians, so I think the article actually says that Maurice Schwenkler is a Republican.

Do you see how silly it is to speculate this early Campisino? We don’t know what this guy’s affiliations are at this point. I don’t think that the accountant of a PAC that paid him for something is what a normal person considered evidence. Clearly the author of the article was trying to spin it that way, but you have to look past the spin to find the truth.

  55. Pilotshark says:

Campesino says:The CEA and its local affiliates gave more than $1.5 million to 527s in the past five years, including $10,000 to the conservative Colorado Leadership Fund to elect Republican candidates. But the great majority of those dollars went to seven apparently Democrat-leaning groups managed by the same registered agent and bookkeeper, Julie Wells. Wells did not respond to a request for comment.

So there are many errors in the ‘reporters’ logic.

  96. Xisithrus says:

And really, after reading the story, its more tabloidal than factual. Its horrible reporting.

  97. pete says:

I didn’t see any reason to challenge people speculating “up thread”. Speculation is good.

But I did see a reason to challenge the multiple positive assertions that this guy is a confirmed “librul” activist based on very shaky evidence that, as far as I know, has only been advanced by a single source and hasn’t, to the best of my knowledge, gained any particular traction.

And, I might add, that the additional assertions about CCS based on apparent projection are disingenuous. 527s are not “campaigners by definition nor is it possible to make assumptions about a payment that may, in fact, have been non-political or even made to a different person.

It seems that those kind of absolute assertions are only being made by a certain “new” name who seems to be giddy over the prospect that this particular vandal may be a “librul”.

  99. Levi the Dungbeetle says:

    Campesino,

You seem convinced the guy that got $500 from the Colorado Citizens Coalition is the same guy that smashed the windows.

Do you have any proof or are you just so desperate for this guy to be a Democrat that you will believe anything? I for one will wait and see, why won’t you?

I certainly admit I think this person is not a Democrat, although in today’s insane world, anything is possible. It is even possible that the guy did work for a Democratic organization but got paid by a Republican organization to smash windows.

If he is a Democrat, I will be ashamed of him. If he is a Republican, will you be ashamed, or are you just another shameless wingnut?

  100. pete says:

You got that right, Xisithrus. WTF kind of “journalist” runs such a story? “A guy with the same name received a check from a 527 that employed a gal who also worked for several causes we all know are librul so the guy’s a liberal”. I was waiting for the Crazy Shelly (InsaneR-Mn.) animation to pop up and screech “ACORN! ACORN!! ACORN!!!”

Most high school paper editors wouldn’t have published that tripe.

  103. Xisithrus says:

The journalist of the story is making all kinds of assumptions based on such things as the AFL-CIO is liberal. That the artist was progressive because she was anti-nuclear weapons,

Yes, only artists are democrats, and ony democrats are against nuclear weapons, and unions, such as the AFL-CIO are ALL vote democratic. Such BS.

It wasnt unreasonable considering the anger at the townhall meetings to jump to the assumption that someone breaking windows with healthcare reform posters was an angry righty but I said in my second post he might be a lefty angered the Dems arent going for single payer. The one who jumped to conclusions on this site is YOU claiming, FALSELY the Denver post article said he was a Democratic plant. Unless he was paid by or egged on by leaders FROM the left or right it doesnt say anyting about the left OR the right that this guy is one of them. 111. pete says:

No. “Grasping at straws” is what the post article demonstrates. Or asserting that, based on the article, this creep is a “paid Democrat campaigner”. That’s not just “grasping at straws”, that’s a leap of faith.

But, regardless of affiliation, I am dead-set against the extremists who have usurped the title of “conservative” from people who were cautious, restrained, and rational in their deliberations.

Alas, such people have been systematically excluded from the ranks of “conservatism” since, at least, the moment Jerry Fallwell became a political power. And those same extremists are still the elite of the GOP.

Hmm….I think this has gotten quite ugly. Although, in offense of all the more conservative commentors about how “you just want to change the topic because it turns out the vandal is liberal” well…..didn’t Bush do the same thing? I mean, when people tried to bring up the war during his second bid for election, didn’t he instead switch it to gay marriage? I’m sorry, but what I’ve noticed with a lot of overzealous Republicans is if you bring up something they can’t really defend against, then they switch to topic to something they can argue to a stand still or a quick win. Why is that?

  160. Purple State says:

  162. Campesino says:

Read it and weep, fellows. The Denver Post has done more digging and the Colorado Democratic Party Chair is backing down

    http://www.denverpost.com/ci_13203950

One of two people suspected of shattering 11 windows Tuesday morning at the state Democratic Party headquarters has an arrest record and a history of helping a Democratic political candidate, public records show.

Police said that about 2:20 a.m., 24-year-old Maurice Schwenkler, now in custody, and an at-large accomplice took a hammer to the picture windows displaying posters touting President Barack Obama and his health care reform efforts.

Early Tuesday, Democratic Party chairwoman Pat Waak said the damage to her building in Denver’s art district was a consequence of “an effort on the other side to stir up hate.” She tempered her statement after Schwenkler’s political history was revealed.

“What I’ve been saying is there is a lot of rhetoric out there from both sides of the spectrum,” Waak said. “That’s what’s been disturbing to me. People are saying a lot of things not appropriate for civil discourse

Schwenkler is charged with criminal mischief and is to make his first appearance in Denver County Court today.

He is accused of doing an estimated $11,000 in damage and could face a felony conviction.

On the last day of the 2008 Republican National Convention, he was charged with misdemeanor unlawful assembly in St. Paul, Minn.

Court records provided through the St. Paul Pioneer Press show he was jailed about 2 a.m.

Schwenkler received $500 in November 2008 to walk door-to-door in support of Democrat Mollie Cullom, who lost her race to Republican state Rep. David Balmer of Centennial.

Waak, who was not involved with the group that paid Schwenkler, said she’s never heard of the suspect and pointed out that just because he canvassed “doesn’t mean he’s a good Democrat.”

Schwenkler was one of dozens of paid canvassers bankrolled by the Colorado Citizens’ Coalition, a political 527 committee Schwenkler has worked for Democratic causes. (Denver Police Department )funded by labor groups and well-known, wealthy liberal donors.

In those disclosures, Schwenkler’s address is listed as Derailer Bicycle Cooperative, a free community bicycle collective that operates just around the corner from the Democratic headquarters. Multiple volunteers at the collective declined to discuss Schwenkler, though they said he was affiliated with the group

Absolutely. We don’t play that. Although I’d think if it was a hoax to be blamed on wingnuts, there’d have been planted “evidence” to that, like some kind of spray paint slogans or something. Anything even remotely specific would most certainly have been added. Most likely this situation stems from a personal dispute between the kid and the office or someone who works in it.

Democrats love false flag operations. Just like Hitler on the Polich border to justify the invasion of that country and Kristallnacht in Germany. Poor Pat Waak. After claiming that the vandals who smashed up the windows at state Democratic Party headquarters must be “an effort on the other side to stir up hate,” she finds out the 24-year-old caught in the crime once worked for Democrats and was arrested for trouble during the Republican National Convention.

So we get to read this bit of wisdom: “What’ve I’ve been saying is there is a lot of rhetoric out there from both sides of the spectrum,” Waak said. “That’s what’s been disturbing to me. People saying a lot of things not appropriate for civil discourse.”

So true. Accusing the other side of stirring up hate when you don’t have the goods is something you should maybe do in private discourse.
