South Carolina Republicans will meet to discuss impeachment of Mark Sanford.

sanfordSouth Carolina state house Republicans are meeting this weekend to discuss “what it would take to force the Republican governor out and how the process would work.” Ever since acknowledging his extramarital affair with an Argentine woman, Gov. Mark Sanford has been under fire for possibly violating state law by flying in expensive business-class seats. Sanford has thus far refused to resign from office, forcing state Republicans to consider alternative means:

House Speaker Pro Tempore Harry Cato of Travelers Rest said he expects impeachment to “dominate” discussion at this weekend’s annual House GOP Caucus retreat in Myrtle Beach. […]

“I think just because of the general nature of how this outing always works, it’s usually dominated by one or two issues and I think impeachment will be the dominant issue,” he said.

“He left the state without anyone knowing where he was,” state Rep. Greg Delleney said, adding, “That was a dereliction of duty as far as I was concerned.” The state Constitution allows officials to be impeached for “serious crimes or serious misconduct in office.”

It’s about time! Sanford lied to the people of SC and drove the state off into a deep chasm. It couldn’t happen to a more deserving politician.

He left his wife to be with the woman he loves. He left the woman he loves to remain the governor. He may end up with nothing.

He’s got to hope the ‘Family’ will be able to keep him in power.

  4. SoapBox says:

…he has been and is just another Rushpublic slime.

  5. someguy says:

Sad thing is, people will see this as a “witch hunt” since it seems that he is being impeached for having an affiar.

When, in reality, they should have impeached him a long time ago for being a shitty governor. The affair was just the light that was shed on his incompetence.

  6. ljm says:

Time for the moralistic Repulsives to abandon their guy to the ever growing Hall of Shame. Watch them all take the moral high ground until they, too, are uncovered. The Republican Party is dying. RI(no)P!

“South Carolina Republicans will meet to discuss impeachment of Mark Sanford.”

I knew this was bound to happen. The lovesick SC guv is hosed: the affair, the wife and children leaving the Guv mansion, the investigation into violating state law in flying on expensing business class seats, and MIA from his duties as GUV. Sanford’s political career is officially finished.

I hope that SC constituents get a better Governor for their state that will work for them and fix the mess in their state.

  8. paleolib says:

Typical Republics. They will stick with the horndog as long as they think he can win (see DiaperMan Vitter’s standing O for example) but a guy like Sanford who is term limited anyway must go so the Republics can show off their supposed virtue when they run some new crook next year.

  9. ElBruce says:

Well, I think if he were to be impeached for anything, it should be specifically for going AWOL, ditching his security detail and being unreachable by his own office.

    Ain’t payback a b*tch?

    Instant Karma

  11. okie dokie says:

So, what other cheating, lying, republican will replace this one?

    One that’s a better liar,
and hasn’t been caught with his pants down….yet?

  12. hormiga brava chavez says:

I hope the SC Rethugs make it happen. The residents deserve someone who is dedicated to the governorship.

  13. Badmoodman says:

“He left the state without anyone knowing where he was.” The state Constitution allows officials to be impeached for “serious crimes or serious misconduct in office.”

    – - Is that serious though? Therein lies the rub.

Wait, the rub is a whole ‘nother aspect to this.

  14. bzb says:

Why did it take this long to impeach Sanford, did they have to get advice from the C-Street Mafia first?

Sanford should have been gone on the day he announced his Argentine hiking trip.

  15. wisdomofwords says:

The South Carolina repubs better speak to the C Street church first before talking about impeaching Sanford. I have a feeling Sanford and Ensign will be on the repub presidential ticket in 2012.

  16. tombaker says:

    it’s not the adultery,

it’s the cavalier attention to serious responsibility,

and pissing away all that money on personal business.

  17. Trittydi says:

He’s brainwashed. The Family has him convinced of his own invincibility and thus he feels no remorse for behaviors he would easily condemn in another.

The disconnect between the reality of the situation and his perception of it is alarming. He is completely a puppet of The Family and is incapable of independent thought or action.

Ok don’t get made at me you guys but I’m a sucker for a love story. Now I knew Mark Sanford was deeply in love when he called Maria his soul mate and the years they have developed their relationship. A man who risk everything and everyone to meet and make love to his soul mate for the last time. It’s right out of a love novel. Someone in Hollywood should make it into a movie. Bring your tissues girls and guys Mark says the words every woman would love to hear from their man. Maybe Mark can get a job instructing men on writing love emails. Jenny will do just fine and she’ll have a new man in no time at all.

  19. Oval12345678 aka James K. Sayre says:

As W. C. Fields said to the lady who kept on and on singing about “gathering shells on the seashore,” in one of his great movies,The Old-fashioned Way, “That’s too formal. Just call me Mark Anthony.” She replied, “Oh, Markie…”

    Et tu, Gov?

  20. dixie blood says:

His wife Jenny should be governor.

  21. evangenital says:

A collection of pots calling the kettle black…

I wonder how many of those judging Sanford are even bigger slimebags than he is.

Holy roller repiggies, basking in their “saved” status, use it as a “carte blanche” to make an utter mockery of “traditional” morality and decent sexual behavior.

The current lieutenant governor of the state is rumored to be a promiscuous closet-case, flanked and protected from any whisper of scandal by a fiercely loyal contingent of Log Cabinette freaks.

  22. Virtual Pebble says:

    1. majii sez:…

Kind of, but I like to look at it slightly differently. What’s happened is that he’s done nothing to improve SC. As for the chasm, actually, he drove himself out over it and now he’s airclawing like hell to get back to solid ground; I’ll give him this though – he’s got way better hang time than Wily Coyote.

  23. ElBruce says:

Impeaching him for not flying coach? That’s a dumb reason. I don’t see why the Governor of any State of the Union should be forced to fly coach. It is a pretty high-level job, ya know. Give him a few perks.

Of course taking off to Argentina, shaking your security detail and then being incommunicado with your own office for a week is clear dereliction of duty, and blatant grounds for getting the boot.

As for what he was doing down there, I don’t give a crap.

    Jackie says:

Ok don’t get made at me you guys but I’m a sucker for a love story.

Especially the part where he ditches his children and family over Fathers’ day to go on an unannounced personal vacation. Yeah, that really tugs the heartstrings there…

Look, if he wants to go retire in Argentina with the woman he’d rather live with, then that’s fine with me too – just make sure the child support payments arrive on time.

  24. Jackie says:

#23 You are right but when we read how adults are suppose to be having the problem with each other not their kids. Look at what we see today as many Leaders not only have affairs but end up sharing custody of the children. I’m sure the Sanford kids know what’s been happening in their home between their parents long before the Media or the State officials. What should one do live with a partner you don’t love so the kids will have both parents and a fake marriage. That’s been done and we know how the kids turn out. Mark was wrong for leaving his kids but as we all have choices and Mark chose Maria and her sons. Do you know anyone who has two families? We have enough people faking marriage, life and everything else these days. Many people believe it’s better to accept your life and live a lie then be honest and move on. Ever notice how many people have affairs or second/third/fourth marriages. Notice how today it’s common for couples to live together and not get married. Barbara Walters interviewed Barbara Bush and asked what she thought of President Bush having a mistress. President Bush came out and said that topic was off the table of discussion it’s a family matter. Barbara accepted George’s mistress because George would always come home. Now before you yell about this being a lie it’s on Google. Daddy Bush paid big money to keep the Media way from Jennifer Fitzgerald and it worked except for the years following his days in Office. Yes we learned of Kennedy and others while the fake story hides the truth.

  25. katy says:

by all rights and records, he will be impeached…

and, again, kudos to jenny for NOT ’standing by’ the cad…

i’m proud of her show of strength and determination.

    stay strong, girl.

  26. Zimzone says:

    Take a hike, governor.

By the way, WHO was in the 2nd SUV at the airport?

    Lindsay? Helllloooo….

  28. Cal Malenky says:

He’s one of God’s chosen for power, so don’t worry about Mark. I’m sure there’s a job in a right-wing think-tank for him, so he’s set for life.

  29. Cal Malenky says:

He said he was hiking the Appalachian Trail
when he was really chasing Argentinian tail

  30. LibertyLover says:

That will just leave more time for hiking! :)

  31. mild_bill says:

    Sanford is crying. He’s sad.

    I’m crying. Tears of JOY!

    buh-bye,govee..

Look, neither of us know what his relationships are like. You romanticize it one way, I’ll romanticize it the other. Chances are both of us are missing by a mile. Which is my point.

The only way I could see the “Argentine option” being better for him psychologically speaking is if he can no longer stand the stress of maintaining the hypocrisy of both his public positions and personal life. In which case, Au Revoir, have fun at the beach and don’t forget to send back child supprot!

But somehow I don’t think he has the courage to actually take that option. All Republicans are cowards.
