Rep. Lynn Jenkins says the GOP needs a ‘great white hope’ to thwart President Obama.

At a town hall forum last week, Rep. Lynn Jenkins (R-KS) offered encouragement to conservative activists by saying there were some “really sharp” young Republicans in the House. “Republicans are struggling right now to find the great white hope,” said Jenkins. “I suggest to any of you who are concerned about that, who are Republican, there are some great young Republican minds in Washington.” Jenkins proceeded to name three GOP members of Congress who are all white — Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA), Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), and Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI). Watch it:

A Jenkins spokeswoman told the Topeka Capitol-Journal yesterday that “the congresswoman wanted to apologize for her word choice and to emphasize she had no intention of expressing herself in an offensive manner.” “There may be some misunderstanding there when she talked about the great white hope,” said spokeswoman Mary Geiger. “What she meant by it is they have a bright future. They’re bright lights within the party.”

Republican racism must be part of their DNA. They just can’t seem to stop themselves. Until science finds a cure, I urge them to seek treatment on their own, regardless if their health insurance covers mental health or not.

Boss lady didn’t mean no harm to de darkies.

Leave it to the repiggies to throw another “racist” shankbone to the white-wing monster chained up outside the trailer.

I made up my mind years ago to never vote for any repiggie, after seeing them all swoon with delight over the invasion of Iraq.

It is a pledge I have kept.

The local elections this fall will be a golden opportunity for all of you to refuse a vote to the repiggies.

They really are just racist garbage.

They don’t know crap about governing.

They are experts at steering tax money to their own private benefit.

“Great white hope” is a very well known phrase, granted. And one that I have never used. The “n”-word is also a very well known phrase. I’ve never used that one either.

  7. pablito says:

UM. The term “great white hope” was coined specifically to describe a white man. So, nice word games, but there is no other way to interpret Jenkins’ comment.

  8. Shayne says:

Too bad all they have is a bunch of “great white mopes”.

  9. gummble-bee-itch says:

Well, that’s putting it out on the table. Take a few minutes to read the Wiki article on Jack Johnson and see if any of it begins to sound familiar.

Racist white America couldn’t stand the notion that the best boxer in the country was Black, and was desperate for a Great White Hope that would beat down the uppity boxer.

  10. choejm says:

  21. Bobwurst says:

She didn’t mean to “express herself in such an offensive manner”, which means she’s not apologizing for thinking such an offensive thought, she just wishes she hadn’t said it. What a load of crap.

  22. raynman says:

Even though the term “Great White Hope” does have a common usage nowadays that tries to separate it from its odious beginning, the Republicans have has so many ‘misstatements’ and ‘misunderstandings’ about racially charged speech, that its no wonder people think the worst.

  23. Marie says:

The Great White Hope was a play, written in the 60’s –which showed how segregation and prejudice created the demand for a “great white hope” who would defeat a black boxing champion.

She meant what she said, and is just expressing the honest feeling of what is left of the GOP. In their view, something that is rightfully the property of white folks (the Presidency) has been stolen by a black person, and a white champion is needed to get it back.

  28. okie dokie says:

  29. EnnuiDivine says:

I dont think she MEANT that to be a racist statement, but it’s just so telling…

  30. trinityman says:

It would be interesting to know what the origins of the phrase were. It is important to note that the phrase is attested well before the Jack Johnson era, as a quick Google Book search reveals tokens from 1897 (in Cosmopolitan magazine) and 1898 (in Dreamers of the Ghetto by Israel Zangwill). Indeed, the promoters of the time were using the term “Great White Hope” as a racist pun. Now clearly the term has been used despicably in American history, but for a U.S. Representative to be unfamiliar with the history of racism in boxing is, in my opinion, an acceptable flaw. Was her choice of words unfortunate? No question. Was it racist in intent? Quite possibly. Was it necessarily racist? No.

No fault to the playwright, but the phrase “great white hope” goes back at least to 1910 (see reference above to Jack Johnson–who was the source material for the play).

There is no other reading for the use of this term, regardless of what was said above:

I have to say, in this case I don’t think she meant anything by it. “Great white hope” is a pretty well known phrase.

The US eventually reconciled to having black sports heroes, but a colored president? Oh noes!

  39. Daddy-O says:

There’s a good reason why the GOP has NO African American federally elected officials in Congress or the Presidency.

I understand those few who seek to minimize the racial overtones of “Great White Hope” but come on… anyone who’s in politics and is that tone-deaf to language must be a Republican. I think Marie has it right.

  42. Daddy-O says:

There’s a good reason she made this ‘mistake’. As bartcop tells us, in Law Number something-or-other:

When a government or an entity profits from a ‘mistake’, expect them to make that ‘mistake’ over and over again.

Using that phrase is a dog whistle. It brings out the troops, armed to the teeth and credit cards ready to contribute. We must protect the children from the insatiable drooling darkies!

    Like a charm, it voiks.

  48. ralph the wonder llama says:

If you follow the link to the article, Jenkins’ spokesmodel Mary Geiger doesn’t really make things better:

Mary Geiger, a spokeswoman for Jenkins, said the reference to a great white hope wasn’t meant to denote a preference by Jenkins for politicians of a particular “race, creed or any background.”

Geiger released the following statement on Jenkins’ behalf: “There’s no doubt the Republican Party has gone through some dark and challenging times in recent years, but thankfully bright young leaders have stepped up to lead the party into the future

    Oooo… “dark times”…

Do they even re-read their statements before they deliver them?

Do they have no awareness of language and the perspectives of others? Well, Republicans typically pay less attention to the perspectives of others than Democrats, that’s true, but I think it’s mostly like Daddy-O said:

When a government or an entity profits from a ‘mistake’, expect them to make that ‘mistake’ over and over again.

Using that phrase is a dog whistle. It brings out the troops, armed to the teeth and credit cards ready to contribute. We must protect the children from the insatiable drooling darkies!

It’s pretty amazing, isn’t it. It looks like every Republic woman is as ugly as they come. There isn’t one with an ounce of compassion or integrity. I guess it comes from the rules you have to pass to be a Republic. You have to be:

    1. A liar
    2. A hypocrite
    3. Lacking a soul
    4. Lacking a heart

    Ouch.

What could possibly lead her to do this (a la Ross Perot’s “You People” speech to the NAACP):

She was using the phrase without thinking; and is totally tone deaf – which, in itself, implies she isn’t fit to govern.

    She is racist.

Freudian Slip. (at least this one **may possibly** coexist with her trying to work on her problems).

She intentionally used it to stir up the base.

None of these explanations are reallly very complimentary toward her. What’s next – speeches on the White Man’s Burden ? (and dare I suggest that the empire building of the Bush neocons could be a form of the White Man’s burden ?)

  61. NinerFan says:

A pathetic, embarrassed conservative jumps right into the fray: “I have to say, in this case I don’t think she meant anything by it. “Great white hope” is a pretty well known phrase.”

Hey stupid! Your biggest and fattest conservative talker says this all the time. I’m sure you’ve heard him say it: “Words mean things!”

In this case, the words echo a social phenomenon from the early 20th century, when the white population was stunned and outraged as Jack Johnson proceeded to own every pasty-faced cracker who stepped into the ring with him. The white world longed for and openly called for a “Great White Hope,” a white guy who could beat this upstart black guy. There’s even a movie about it starring James Earl Jones. It’s called “The Great White Hope.”

So please conservatives. Don’t embarrass yourselves any further by trying to pretend you don’t know what this is all about.

  62. GregM says:

  66. darnay says:

Let me make this as simple as possible- “Hey Lynn, Kiss my BLACK ASS !”.

  67. Moderate Man says:

The scary thing is that she is considered a moderate Republican in the state of Kansas. It makes me wonder what Jim Ryun, the arch-conservative Congressman who was ousted in 2006 would have said.

I’d pour more invective upon her and the state of Kansas, but their own words are enough to make them a laughingstock.

Remember that this was the state board who tried to strike evolution from the textbooks.

  68. Constant Weader says:

Matt, you’re so wrong. Cantor isn’t white — he’s Joo-ish — & the other two guys aren’t white — they’re Eye-rish. Rep. Jenkins has someone in mind who’s more a descendant of Jefferson Davis or Stonewall Jackson — REAL Americans (uh, except for that little Civil War fiasco).

    The Constant Weader at RealityChex.com

  69. JYD says:

I love all the back-tracking. Why didn’t she just say that instead of saying great white hope.

She should have referred to people of color in the Repub Party, oh wait, let me back-track are there any people of color except for Michael Steele and…?

  70. Game of Life says:

She could have meant “bright” instead of “white.”

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

    Yeah, sure.

  71. Art says:

Are you sure she didn’t say “Great White Taupe”?

  72. Virtual Pebble says:

Well, if she meant their future’s so bright they gotta wear shades, why didn’t she just say so, instead of using a phrase which carries a certain amount of racist freight around with it.

    Stupid much, Congresscritter?

  73. Cal Malenky says:

But Obama’s half white. Does that count? Guess not.

  74. Virtual Pebble says:

    71. Art sez:…

Nah, she meant to say “Great White Dope”.

  75. Virtual Pebble says:

    23. Marie sez:…

You are correct about “The Great White Hope” being a title of a play, Marie, but the phrase actually entered the vocabulary at the very time and in the circumstances that the play addresses. Jack Johnson was the first black World Heavyweight Champion, winning the title in 1908, and there was a subsequent outcry among various and sundry people, including some that we might not today have thought would be racist, for a “Great White Hope” to beat Johnson. The wikipedia entry for Johnson is a fairly good one, but there are also a couple of biographies on Johnson, as well as some other historical works that detail some of his story.

  76. Jackie says:

Now it’s interesting that Eric Cantor is listed as the Great White Hope when he was to busy to work on Health Care because he had to go to the Britney Spears Concert. Rep. Jenkins might feel strongly Racist and Hate as she suggest at the town hall but more Americans showed we’ve passed that stage and have moved forward.

Anyone ever notice how in the hospital babies don’t have a problem being next to each other and check out some grave sites with people who are buried next to one another all those done with people of all races. Yet it’s only a problem in the middle of our lives that we seem to put race as the problem with each other. Ok I’m lucky I was taught races isn’t how you judge a person so I have friends of all races and it’s good.

  77. cmlane says:

Under what circumstances would you actually use the phrase “great white hope”…an advertisement for teeth whitening products maybe…I don’t know. Perhaps some bleaching product used on clothing.

It really makes no sense. Even if you’re unfamiliar with the historical use of the phrase.

Looks like Jenkins made a big oopsie. These are the kind of statements that will haunt legislators who try to seek higher office.

  79. Keith says:

If you look up “Great White Hope” at Wikipedia, the earliest reference is for heavyweight boxer James Jeffries’ (white) attempt to win the title from Jack Johnson (African-American) in 1910.:

“became known as “The Fight of the Century”, soon became a symbolic battleground of the races. The media, eager for a “Great White Hope”, found a champion for their racism in Jeffries. He said, “I am going into this fight for the sole purpose of proving that a white man is better than a Negro.”[1] A furor was created at the fight, as a ringside band played, “All coons look alike to me”.[2]

    Nope, no racism there! snark

Uh, Repubs, your KKK element is not going to like Eric Cantor since he is kinda Jewish. Just Saying.

  89. NinerFan says:

Hey Keith, let’s not forget the end of that little 1910 story about “Big Jim Jeffries,” who was the first “Great White Hope.”

    Jack Johnson kicked his ass.

  90. conservative guy says:

In 1915 a white by the name of Jess Willard kicked Johnsons ass.

  91. Keith says:

    NinerFan,
I also heard the expression used in boxing in the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s. Believe it was also said of Larry Bird. (Yep, wikipedia says it, so it must be true)

  92. Keith says:

    conservative guy,

Willard had an advantage over Johnson, in that Willard was 33 and Johnson 37 at the time. Since the fight went 26 rounds, you could probably say it was close. Did he literally kick his ass?

Willard at age 37, lost to Jack Dempsey.

Johnson had an advantage over Jeffries in that Jeffries had been retired 6 years.

My father was in the army with Max Baer (Jethro’s dad).

  93. NinerFan says:

I haven’t seen the movie in years, but it has a young James Earl Jones as Jack Johnson and I remember thinking that this actor is going to be around for a long time. He was fantastic.

Hmm, how about Republicans thinking about a “great white whale” instead… Something that Captain Ahab was obsessed about chasing around the ocean…featured in Herman Melville’s novel, Moby Dick, published back in 1851.

Why are Republicans so obsessed with “white?” Are they insecure or just plain uptight about anyone else who is not as uptight as they are?

  97. Keith says:

    NinerFan,

Getting off topic: James Earl Jones was in Dr. Strangelove six years before that as Lieutenant Lothar Zogg.

  98. Jackie says:

Now the comment is interesting as is that what she might think of let’s say Tiger Woods? When the United States won gold medals in the Olympics we cheered a proud Americans and not one person say a word about the race of the winner it was all about being American. Excuses are made as Jenkins said she misspoke. But we know she said what she meant and meant what she said. It was the video that is the reason for the apology. Interesting that Rep. Jenkins is from Kansas which is the same State as President Obama’s Mother and grandparents. I wonder how Jenkins really feels about Jackie Robinson, Mohamed Ali and Dr. King? We just lost thousands of soldiers of all races who are Americans and she just showed what their sacrifice was for.

After 26 rounds the older smaller Johnson tired and was knocked out but saying Willard kicked his ass is a vast overstatement.
