Steele Dismisses Woman Whose Mother Died Of Cancer: ‘It Makes For Great TV. You’ll Probably Make It. … Enjoy.’

RNC Chairman Michael Steele has strongly condemned Democrats who have criticized the town hall protests by opponents of health care reform. Last month, Steele said:

We are not inciting anyone to go out and destroy anything. We’re not organizing the town halls; their senators are. But instead of focusing on the fact that people are genuinely concerned about what is going on, this administration has the arrogance, the arrogance to look down at my mother, to look down at my co-worker.

Yesterday at Howard University, Steele encountered his own “genuinely concerned” citizen — 23-year-old college grad/activist Amanda Duzak. Duzak stood up and interrupted Steele, arguing that “everyone in this country should have access to good health care” and cited the case of her own mother who died of cancer six months ago because she couldn’t afford her prescription chemotherapy medications. The audience applauded her.

Steele responded by chastising Duzak and accusing her of pulling antics to get on TV. “So people go out to town halls, they go to the community, and they’re like this. (SHAKES ARMS) It makes for great TV. You’ll probably make it tonight. Enjoy it.” The audience immediately went “Ohhh” and “Oooo.” Watch it:

On the Huffington Post, Dave Zirin also notes that Steele’s “effort to connect with young black students got off to a rather cringe-worthy start when right before the billed ’student dialogue’ two dozen white members of area young Republicans arrived to sit in the reserved first two rows of the packed room.”

Ah, another fine example of compassionate conservatism. I hope someone is compiling a videography of these Repugnants talking down to needy Americans for the 2010 elections. I don’t know what’s worse, Repugnants doing this kind of shit or fools like McCain who are just too afraid to face the public and hold closed door THINOs with friendly audiences. Just more proof (as if we needed more) that the Republic Party has no answers and just doesn’t give a shit about the troubles of average Americans.

  30. Rosencrantz says:

    @ Athena:

There is nothing wrong with interuptions. The issue was corporate sponsored lynch mobs who didn’t want to take part in a discussion. They just wanted to shout and PREVENT a discussion from occurring.

As far as I know, no pro-health reform lefties have tried to kill the town halls, brought guns to meetings, chased the officials out to their cars, yelled at and intimidated other members of the public from speaking their own opinions, OR shouted endlessly about something they know NOTHING about and not allowed the official from even answering.

Nice try, though. You can now go back to whatever birther/deather group you belong to and watch some Glen Beck.

Where are the ’socialists’ getting rid of capitalism anywhere in the world?

  34. rsalier says:

Mr Steele needs to crawl back under the rock he came from. Where is your compassion, your Christian consideration of others, your ?????

Oh thats right, you are a Repuglican, sorry, I forgot, you have no compassion, intelegence or morals.

  35. smidget says:

I have to say, this topic is close to my heart, and not because I have suffered from the lack of health insurance or watched family members who have. On the contrary – it is because of modern medicine available right here in the US that my mother has not died from ovarian cancer, despite being diagnosed in Stage 3B 10 years ago this month (95% 5-year survival rate, she doubled that). It is, in fact, because of the comprehensive health insurance and supplemental insurance plans that my family did not go bankrupt.

No, the reason it is sensitive to me is not because of what I have or have no experienced, but rather the recognition that my family, my mother, myself…we are nothing special. We are fortunate to have good jobs which provide insurance, though the cost to us has been very high (think $700 a month for family coverage after the single portion is paid in full by the employer).

The reason it is important to me is because I know that there are millions of people who can’t get the kind of care my mother got. There are millions of people who will go bankrupt trying to treat an ill family member.

There is no excuse to not provide affordable health care to every American citizen. There are debateable points on how to do that effectively, but there is no excuse not to do it.

I find Steele’s comments deeply offensive and cruel, as the child of a cancer survivor, the loved one of those who didn’t survive, and a human being who gives a damn about the well-being of those less fortunate than myself.

To sum up, there are only three words I have for Mr. Steele:
    F**K YOU, BUDDY.

  36. belaccifer lacca says:

How would you help other people like this woman’s mother, Athena?

  42. Fred says:

    Athena says:
I know the progressive movement would like to rid this country of capitalism…..

Just one small example to show you why this is fallacy.

The dow under Clinton went from 8000 to 11000

The dow under bush went from 11000 to 6000

Do you want to talk about the numbers of jobs created during those two administrations?

  43. TXProgressive says:

Boy, the level of distain the republicans have consistently shown toward “real Americans” is truly distasteful. Add steele to the “great white hope” womans comments the other day, and you have a party that truly doesn’t give a rats patootie about “real Americans” and their plight with health care. Disgusting.

  44. MapleStreet says:

How can one person do so many things that are reprehensible in 30 seconds ?

*) Saying the people speaking at meetings wave their arms to get noticed despite knowing the republican astroturfing

*) Turning their nose down at someone because their mother had cancer

*) Being flippant about the same

*) Continuing to ignore his own role in astroturfing

*) While ignoring the person whose mother had cancer, blaming the Obama administration for being arrogant.

Oh, and yesterday apparently my comment came across wrong. My point was that if the good Congressman gives these rather passionate numbers of how Medicare is so good (and by the way, the statistics back him up), then it seems like the dems should be going full steam forward in making a single-payer national health insurance system.

  45. Zimzone says:

Steele couldn’t quite steal the show, eh?

The disturbing part of this is that he dismissed this young lady’s concerns, which were entirely pertinent, as an ‘act’, while he is the designated Clown for the RNC circus.

Steele does the clown role well, but he doesn’t know that the RNC will soon pack up it’s tent & move to another ‘barker’.

  46. Rosencrantz says:

I know the progressive movement would like to rid this country of capitalism and create even more social programs. But, I wouldn’t use the term Communist, Socialist is more fitting.

You know what Athena, if you have such a problem with social programs, then how about you pack up and leave SOCIETY. Leave all the comforts and priveledges that SOCIETY provides for you like clean water, roads, police, firemen, etc. and move yourseld out to a cabin in the woods somewhere. Become a Hermit, and see how far you get. Let’s see how much of a self-made, one-man island you truly are.

The problem with Republicans is they feed off of all the priveledges that society presents, and then when they have had their fill, they talk big about how they are self-made and try to take those same priveledges away from other people.

You know what? If you are so hateful of society and the social programs (or, GASP, socialism) then leave. Start your own one man nation and be totally self sufficient. Nobody is stopping you.

@#11 – Hot damn! Did you get a firm commitment back from the show?

Sort of O/T……but don’t know how else to get the info out – this is from another website:

This little tidbit is going viral. Says that on Obama’s site, “Organizing for America”, Obama is calling for 9/11 to be a day to “fight back against our own Right-Wing Domestic Terrorists who are subverting the American Democratic Process, whipped to a frenzy by their Fox Propaganda Network ceaselessly re-seizing power for their treacherous leaders.”

    http://www.stoptheaclu.com/2009/09/01/obama-campaign-organization-plans-911-event-to-fight-right-wing-domestic-terrorists/comment-page-1/#comment-124835

Well, the thing is that no such page exists. It looks like it DID exist but it was a personal page made using one of the “Organizing for America” tools that allows you to post events. There is no doubt in my mind that someone from the crazy pool posted the piece, took a screen shot, started sending it everywhere and then the page got deleted by site moderators. But, by then, the damage was done.

The comments on the sites that are now posting this insanity are frightening. They are locked and loaded and ready to hit the streets. This has got to be combatted, but how? Fighting back with facts won’t work because they feel everyone’s paid off by Obama. I’ve been posting the fact that the page doesn’t exist and trying to be a voice of calm. Haven’t seen responses yet. Hopefully other sane voices will join in.

  57. Perry logan says:

Steele is a good example of the poor social judgment that afflicts the Right in America.

Forgive me, but it’s hard not to think about psychological disorders when you’re talking about wingnuts. The Right have a plethora of mental and behavioral disorders, which I am busily naming and defining–nazitis, masturbatory gloating, verbal incontinence, selective memory loss, egos as big as the Queen Mary, misogyny, dissociation, fear of government, a crippling obsession with gays, xenophobia, a tendency to commit treason, creepiness, etc. These are some sick puppies.

Wingers also have the ability to pull things out of their butts and then turn around and believe them. But that’s more of a special ability than an affliction–see below.

Because they are mostly white guys, the Right also have special powers denied to others, and these, too, I am feverishly delineating.

Special Rightwing Abilities include a vastly overdeveloped herd instinct, the ability to read liberals’ minds, the ability to foresee a rosy future no matter how screwed you are, the ability to turn to “the Dark Side” and still be righteous, the ability to hold Bill Clinton responsible for everything under heaven–that sort of thing.

  73. smidget says:

The answer is – the same type YOU prefer – mostly capitalist with a splash of socialism thrown in for good measure. You can hem and haw about how you hate socialism, but you don’t. You just don’t know what it is. Any service available to the public that is paid for by tax payer dollars is a form of socialism. That means that public schools, police departments, firefighters…..these are all socialist programs. Unless you are suggesting doing away with these vital services, then we prefer the exact same type of economic system that you prefer.

I must say that the members of this site are uniquely efficient at smacking down trolls like this one. So, bring it on, Athena. Facts will always win out over fear-mongering, paranoia, and straight-up falsehoods. We welcome the opportunity.

  85. GregM says:

Didn’t Steele complain of having oreo cookies thrown at him when talking to a black audience when he ran for the senate? I remember Hannity going off about it. Well, Steele should have been showered with them after that insensitive remark.

That was a purely rhetorical question.

  89. ralph the wonder llama says:

    Here is a NEWS FLASH:

You are 2 centuries too late with this argument. Some of the early settlements in this country were collectives. Also, Social Security is a socialist program and that is over 70 years old. The whole society is a hybrid system with capitalism and socialism, just like some European countries.

  91. muzz says:

It’s a ll very clear now. If you are a screaming, foaming-at-the-mouth moron at one of these rallies, you are part of a grass-roots movement, and share the beliefs of the American people. On the other hand, if you are really wanting to have a rational discussion, and want better health care for all, you are just looking to get on TV. I’m so glad this has been straightened out for me /snark

and the thing, the thing that really gets me is that you will NOT see this clip on the National news or CNN. You’ll see it MSNBC and on the internet.
In the end the general public is not hearing the CC/Republicans ridiculing folks who have lost family members or laughing at working moms who would love an insurance plan they can afford or booing cancer survivors and disabled Americans. You won’t see the huge pro-health care rally in Austin, TX. or the town halls where the attendees are attentive and polite. The town halls where pro-health reform activists are yelling do not make it to TV.
We only get to hear the folks screaming “I want my country baaacccckkkk” and death panels and lots of gray hairs who don’t want socialism, but will cut you if you touch Medicare.
No polls that show a majority of Americans in favor of a choice of a public option are reported on.

Oh, so my rant is a rant about how the media is framing the message that the Republicans are right that health care reform is scary and that the majority of us like the status quo.

  96. ralph the wonder llama says:

Overeating may not be the problem. Considering that the types & quality of food that most lower-income people are forced to consume because of price, diabetes can be an insidious problem.

In other words, people eat what they can afford–and unfortunately that consists of large amounts of carbohydrates, high fructose corn sugar(s), preservatives, processed and re-processed food products. These ‘foods’ are guaranteed to make a person’s metabolism get out of whack pretty quickly.

This doesn’t include the true gluttons–they do exist, but not in the quantity that many “right-wackjobs” harp about.

    ____________

Something between European-style socialism and free-market capitalism sounds about right to me.

Government must protect the public from unscrupulous industries and predatory corporations while encouraging entrepreneurship and growth. Private industry must be the primary driver of the economy, operating in a well-regulated and competitive marketplace. Basic infrastructure should be run via public-private partnerships. And in basic infrastructure I include power, water, sanitation, public transportation, and health care – I believe nobody should be denied access to basic needs due to lack of money.

Doesn’t sound like Communism, does it?

  100. greengaia says:

Steele is someone who adores the sound of his own voice. Every time I listen to him speak (on the radio, in public, in speeches, etc.), I am reminded of how useless this person is. When he says “engaging” him in a debate, what he really means is listening to his preposterous rhetoric and not asking questions he does not have the answers for. (which is just about any question you may ask him) He’s just a ridiculous little man, undeserving of all the time spent listening to him. They may be few and rare, but Steele needs to be replaced with a Republican who can at least speak in public without belaboring the points.

  101. Hoodathunk says:

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive.”

You mean the one the theocrats are pushing for? The ones who think we should all live in log cabins and go to the same church? Those tyrants?

  102. stncldcrzy68 says:

  103. pete says:

I wonder if the stupid troll has read any of the authors he quote-mines. Very few of them are/were conservatives and many were progressive revolutionary. And I have yet to see him quote anyone who would not recognize the sheer madness of the GOP.

  104. pete says:

    stncldcrzy68 says:
Your BUFFOONERY makes for great tv…the flip-flopper that you are……oh that’s right, he doesnt do ‘policy’

I have to quibble. “Flip-floppers” contradict a previously stated position. Micky has yet to clearly state any position, to the best of my knowledge.

  105. Hoodathunk says:

Or were you were referring to the one mickey is talking about here where folks get to pay people to supposedly cover their illnesses only to take the money and run so they can post record profits?

You know, the same ones who use your money to block legislation that might be more beneficial to you than to them? Those tyrants? I suppose they don’t quite qualify because it is obvious the only good they are focused on is their own.

  106. Uncle Ho says:

kws: Just where TF were you from 2001-2009(January 20) when we had a REAL tyrant in the White House?

    -I am the decider
-It would be easier in a dictatorship, just as long as I’m the dictator
-the Constitution is just a God damned piece of paper
    -the Geneva Conventions are “quaint”
    -suspension of Habeus Corpus
    -warrantless spying
-arrest of dissenters who had nothing more than antiBush tees or bumper stickers
    -”free speech zones” for protesters
-signing statements declaring what laws would be followed or ignored
    -torture

Guess you are very selective on your definition of a tyrant

So go suck a rotten egg you POS!

Michael Steele is truly the spot-on messenger of the GOP, lobbing spitballs at mainstream American out of his and his party’s anger of being deprived of power.

  112. Xisithrus says:

Athena says: What type of economic system do you prefer as a Progressive?

Its all to often assumed today that ‘Free Market’ is somehow Democracy. Its not. When private enterprise has managed to control a good portion of the 524 FOTH thats not free market, when the people who profit off you are telling the government they dont want to lower your premiums and not to give them a public choice.

The problem isnt that the government isnt progressive, its that its become a big business pork fest.

  113. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world.

CS Lewis wrote the above quote also. Could apply to our treatment of those with illness and no insurance, couldn’t it? Kind of like the Biblical admonishment that how we treat the least of our fellow human beings is how we treat God.

  115. pete says:

Historically, there are two conditions that can lead to the utter collapse of an economy.

    1. When the accumulation of wealth, in the absence of producing a product or commodity, becomes the leading industry.

    2. When those with the most to gain by rampant greed are placed in charge of policing themselves.

Our economy is operating under both those conditions and will be in peril until those conditions are changed.

  118. pete says:

The simplest definition of communism is “communal ownership”.

  119. EugeneDebs says:

I have said this before. I think it bears repeating. The object is a just society. It is like getting to the top of a hill which is a just society. The more we argue about whether to take a Ford or a Chevy to the top of that hill, the more we deify the vehicle instead of keeping our focus ON the goal the less likely we are to REACH the top of that hill. Neither socialism nor capitalism are perfect. Neither are inherently evil. Both need adjustments from the purists ideals of them to make a society more just. Those who want to deify either one are no longer part of the machinery trying to get to a just society

  120. belaccifer lacca says:

  124. misscoleopteramolly says:

Hmmm…Steele sounds like another guy who once said of rape, “as long as its inevitable, you may as well lay back and enjoy it”.

Just what IS it about Republicans that make them incapable of compassion?

OK — so what the hell this has to do with the topic at hand, I’ll never know.

    I’ll drift back out, now.

    Paul

  129. smidget says:

Athena goes away for all that time and when it finally comes back, all it has to say is that it can’t define communism?

Hell, not knowing what the word means doesn’t stop it from using it to describe others. Admitting that you’re a moron who just throws out scary words and talking points is so far beyond stupid, there is no word for it.

Here’s an idea, Athena – start with the f**king dictionary, you idiot. Then, go f**k yourself with it, because you’re clearly not here for conversation and discourse, you’re here to derail the thread.

  130. linzloo08 says:

Ladies and gentlmen, may I present to you the GOP’s idea on healthcare reform: **drumroll**

1). Don’t change the system! (we need their generous campaign contributions!)

2). Strengthen tort reform (so basically even if you have a legit case of malpractice, doctors won’t be able to be sued).

3). Call anyone who speaks out for healthcare reform at any of our “meetings” a clown or an attention seeker (let’s forget how stupid we look when we “protest”).

    St. Francis de Assisi

    Just adding to the quote-o-matic.

  133. pags2 says:

Just what IS it about Republicans that make them incapable of compassion?

Many of them are all about self-gratification and cannot see anyone else in their world. Others are Republicans because they are easy prey to politicians who wave the flag and thump the Bible. The rational Republicans are few in number on the national level.

  134. BrianOC says:

I guess what bothers me about Repubs in general are a couple of things: They interpret the Bible only when politically expedient and they blast any effort for change. WE all know that we have problems; offer some sort of solution to show that you have (some) brain function. I’ll get off my soap box now…Thanks for letting me vent…back to work now…

And this was at Howard University. So you’ve got an auditorium filled with black college students at a traditionally black university, except for the first two rows of reserved seats are filled with self-satisfied white kids.

Remember when the Republicans used to be so good at stage management?

Dog-in-a-manger Turd Daddy Steele strikes with foot in mouth again. In addition to being stupid, immoral and unethical, the man has no decency; he’s out there giving pigs a bad name.

  140. DanCaveman says:

Wow! Does Mr, Steele ever make sense? I have seen quite a few of his interviews and television appearances and I don’t think I have ever seen a coherent thought escape his lips – even on accident.

  141. DanCaveman says:

The debate…what debate? All I heard was a 5+ minute rambling anecdote with no point. There were no solutions, no facts, and he certainly wasn’t listening to anyone.

He is constantly twisting himself in knots because he knows the progressive opinion is correct, but has to agree with the premise that everyone should have healthcare but have no ideas how to make that possible.

  142. green says:

The Republican party is dead – we are just hearing the death rattle. It is sad to me in some ways because my dad and my maternal grandmother were staunch Republicans…but they were intelligent and reasonable…and they too would turn away from such disgrace.

I see a true people’s progressive party emerging out of all this, as we watch our once beloved Democratic party glide to the right. Eventually good will come from this – change is in the air.

Is this adult so completely cocooned from the outside world they are unaware of needing to get a job, benefits etc upon graduation?
