Broun says Obama is trying to establish an ‘authoritarian government.’

brounie2The Athens Banner-Herald reports that Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA) told constituents during a meeting of the Morgan County Republicans Wednesday that he thinks Obama and Democratic leaders are planning to establish an “authoritarian government” through the use of a national police force, gun control, and controlling the press:

Broun, R-Athens, apparently has not changed his belief that President Obama may be a fascist since he made similar remarks in Augusta in November and then in an Associated Press interview.

He told a meeting of the Morgan County Republicans on Wednesday night that Obama already has or will have the three things he needs to make himself a dictator: a national police force, gun control and control over the press.

He has the three things that are necessary to establish an authoritarian government,” Broun said. “And so we need to be ever-vigilant, because freedom is precious.”

This isn’t the first time Broun has made these outrageous charges. Last month he told constituents that Obama’s “socialistic elite” are planning to “declare martial law” to turn the U.S. into a dictatorship.

President Obama needs to speak out loudly against these people and name names of elected officials pulling this cr@p. He is THE PRESIDENT not their whipping boy and he needs to demand the respect he deserves. This has led to the insanity behind his back to school video and it needs to be stopped NOW.

OK…so what else is new? These reports of GOPhers saying crap like this has been going on since before Obama was elected. We know they are crazy and insane, so why are we giving them any more ink?

I think we need to keep a watchful eye out because this could definitely lead to some very dangerous stuff. But at the same time, it’s all really starting to blur into one big cauldron of dumb. The entire Republican leadership could denounce Obama from the steps of the Capitol as being a Nazi-inspired socialistic American-hating Jew that will indoctrinate your kids with the joys of being homosexual, and it wouldn’t surprise me at this point.

If the Democratic leadership would finally come out in force and say all of this garbage talk is repellent, then perhaps we’d see some quickly folding backtracking. Where are they?

They sure didn’t complain when their criminals were in charge…

…but then again, the Republic Fascist Party is one huge MAFIA and this includes their base, criminals all.

Broun is correct but he has the wrong President. Yes during the 8 year crime wave of Bush/Cheney that was exactly what was going on while the GOP supported and many Dems got paid to follow the plan. Now anyone with a brain knows there will never be a minority President or woman who will ever be allowed to do what Bush/Cheney did. Now we will see the Cheney plan updated in the future as Cheney upgraded Nixon’s criminal blueprint. In time Republicans and the KKK will get back in power and then bring the US to it’s completion of the second Great Depression.

  21. GeeDubs says:

Oh, my no…this is THEIR AmeriKKKA. The tree of liberty must be watered and all that…

I wish I could tell that our Congressional leadership clearly recognized the degree to which I see my statement above as utterly absurd.

National police force? Um no, that was Bush and his christian soldiers.
Gun Control? I haven’t heard boo from the Administration concerning gun control. If anything they have stressed protection of the 2nd Amendment.
Control over the press? Now THIS one is just laughable.

Broun also conveniently left out the last and most important factor needed which would be a desire to actually do it which our President has shown absolutely no inclination toward. Suffice to say Mr. Broun is just another fear mongering chicken little, pissant Regressive pandering to his idiotic base of fools.

Oh that that bear were alive…and hungry.

  31. Peter C says:

So far, I’ve heard that President Obama is a dictator, a fascist, a socialist, a Marxist, a terrorist, a Manchurian president, a secret Muslim, and a murderer. Who wants to take away everybody’s guns, money, and freedom, who claims that Congress is a “superior race”, who wants to shut down the press except for his own “Pravda”, who wants to arrest all those who protest the government, who wants to “indoctrinate” our schoolchildren, and who wants to kill all our grandmothers.

And that’s just this week. You’d think that reasonable people would recognize all this for the twaddle it is.

Can we just get some evidence that ANY of this is true? Can somebody confront these guys and demand some accountability for their accusations?

Oh, right. The people who do that are generally people from the media. And the teabaggers all know how “liberal” the media are.

I am not sure that that is true . Pose comitaus was first given up after 911 and then the attempt was made to rectify the mistake which Bush used a signing statement to nullify

See, If I can find it, as I recall, perhaps wrongly, it was quietly repealed.

On September 26, 2006, President Bush urged Congress to consider revising federal laws so that U.S. armed forces could restore public order and enforce laws in the aftermath of a natural disaster, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

These changes were included in the John Warner National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2007 (H.R. 5122), which was signed into law on Oct 17, 2006, subsequently repealed in their entirety.[3]

Section 1076 is titled “Use of the Armed Forces in major public emergencies”. It provided that:

The President may employ the armed forces… to… restore public order and enforce the laws of the United States when, as a result of a natural disaster, epidemic, or other serious public health emergency, terrorist attack or incident, or other condition… the President determines that… domestic violence has occurred to such an extent that the constituted authorities of the State or possession are incapable of maintaining public order… or [to] suppress, in a State, any insurrection, domestic violence, unlawful combination, or conspiracy if such… a condition… so hinders the execution of the laws… that any part or class of its people is deprived of a right, privilege, immunity, or protection named in the Constitution and secured by law… or opposes or obstructs the execution of the laws of the United States or impedes the course of justice under those laws.[4]

The actual text is on pages 322–323 of the legislation.

As of 2008, these changes have been repealed in their entirety, reverting to the previous wording of the Insurrection Act.[5]

So Obama, in this case, does not currently have the power to unleash military in this country and the screamy heads can go silent.

  64. freeman says:

from the wikipedia article furter down the page ,
    Homeland security
On October 1, 2008, the US Army announced that the 3rd Infantry Division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team (BCT) will be under the day-to-day control of U.S. Army North, the Army service component of Northern Command (NORTHCOM), as an on-call federal response force for natural or man-made emergencies and disasters, including terrorist attacks.

This marks the first time an active U.S. Army unit will be given a dedicated assignment to NORTHCOM, where it is stated they may be “called upon to help with civil unrest and crowd control or to deal with potentially horrific scenarios such as massive poisoning and chaos in response to a chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear or high-yield explosive (CBRNE) attack.” These soldiers will also learn how to use non-lethal weapons designed to “subdue unruly or dangerous individuals” without killing them, and also includes equipment to stand up a hasty road block; spike strips for slowing, stopping or controlling traffic; shields and batons; and beanbag bullets.[7] However, the “non-lethal crowd control package [...] is intended for use on deployments to the war zone, not in the U.S. [...]“.[7]

The US military will have around 20,000 uniformed personnel in this role in the United States by 2011, specifically trained and equipped to assist state and local government, respond to major disasters, terrorist attack, other major public emergencies.[8] This shift in strategy is a result of recommendations by Congress and outside experts.[8] This response capability is not new, but now accompanies a permanent assignment of forces to NORTHCOM.

This formalizes a role for the use of federal troops within the United States during major public emergencies and disasters, as was the case in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.[7] This has raised concern about the relationship between Posse Comitatus and the use of the military in domestic disaster support and homeland defense roles.[9] However, federal military forces have a long history of domestic roles.[10] The Posse Comitatus Act prohibits the use of federal military forces to “execute the laws”; however, there is disagreement over whether this language may apply to troops used in an advisory, support, disaster response, or other homeland defense role, as opposed to conventional law enforcement.[1]

Yet they foolishly speak up for insurance companies who deny them adequate coverage or coverage at all and charge them more and more for less and less. Why we allow corporations to act like citizens with rights is beyond me.

I haven’t heard any logical thinking from a Republican since Dwight D. Eisenhower (beware the military industrial complex). The Republican party is a bunch of loons.

  81. Chessmaster says:

Democratic representatives of Congress were critical of Bush, but they never spread such lies.

  82. pags2 says:

Where did these mythical “moderate” Rethuglicans go?

They are in state and local governments and are staying out of the national party. Unfortunately, most of these people are what is left of the Republicans in the East and Midwest. They took a back seat in 1994 when Gingrich took the Speaker position. He broke many traditions in the House and that lead to the decline of civility. The same happened in the Senate. Now the country and Congress are even more polarized because of Obama’s election. The Republicans have not been able to digest the cause of their downfall nor does it appear that will happen soon. It will take more losses for them to get the point which is that they need to distance themselves from the far right. The Dems went through this since 1968 and it took them a long time to reorganize.

  83. Virtual Pebble says:

Broun has a pretty good point, although he’s pointing his charge in the wrong direction.

I think we came very close to a dictatorship under Bush/Cheney, and if the Cheneyites manage their fearmongering correctly, we could see an allegedly “conservative” authoritarian dictatorship yet. It wouldn’t be the first time the radical right in a country decided that the only way to enforce their notion of correctness is some combination of police state and martial law, and then carried through with it.

After Dick’s master plan of 911 was a roaring success, it was easy to take over, a little war distraction here, a terror alert there, super easy, only those commie unamerican libs saw thru our game plan, my base is blind to corruption, they are part of it, one be crime family. Why when those pallets of cash disappeared in Iraq, where the hell do you think they really went? Let me inform you..S..W…I…S…S….er….ah….Bank, hehe no one even thought of looking into that. Why we own the corporate media, they regularly send over virgins for Dick to…you know…cut the heart out of…what you think Dick?

Dick says – I need fresh blood from cute kittens and puppies.

  85. RUCerious says:

    Projection, much?

  86. RUCerious says:

Yeah, Obama’s going to take over FauxSnooze.
    BWAHAHAH!!!

    Dolt.

  87. WillWrite4Food says:

Yea, darn that gun control; giving criminals, terrorists and the mentally ill easy access to assault weapons makes us all more free.

Constitutional amendments banning flag burning, abortion and gay marriage? Not fascist. Forcing civilian guns on private property owners? Not fascist. Detaining an American citizen captured on U.S. soil indefinitely in a military brig without counsel or charges? Not fascist. Suspending habeas corpus without pretext of invasion or rebellion? Not fascist.

  88. Cal Malenky says:

    Pop quiz for Mr Broun:
Who said “Dictatorship would be easier as long as I’m the dictator.”
    Bush or Obama?

  89. Cal Malenky says:

    Question 2 for Mr Broun:
Who said “The constitution’s just a goddam piece of paper!”
    Bush or Obama?

  90. freeman says:

    from greenwald @ salon
Section 1076 of the John Warner National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2007 changed the name of the key provision in the statute book from “Insurrection Act” to “Enforcement of the Laws to Restore Public Order Act.” The Insurrection Act of 1807 stated that the president could deploy troops within the United States only “to suppress, in a State, any insurrection, domestic violence, unlawful combination, or conspiracy.” The new law expands the list to include “natural disaster, epidemic, or other serious public health emergency, terrorist attack or incident, or other condition” — and such “condition” is not defined or limited. . . .

The story of how Section 1076 became law vivifies how expanding government power is almost always the correct answer in Washington. Some people have claimed the provision was slipped into the bill in the middle of the night. In reality, the administration clearly signaled its intent and almost no one in the media or Congress tried to stop it . . . .

Section 1076 was supported by both conservatives and liberals. Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.), the ranking Democratic member on the Senate Armed Services Committee, co-wrote the provision along with committee chairman Sen. John Warner (R-Va.). Sen. Ted Kennedy openly endorsed it, and Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.), then-chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, was an avid proponent. . . .

Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), the ranking Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, warned on Sept. 19 that “we certainly do not need to make it easier for Presidents to declare martial law,” but his alarm got no response. Ten days later, he commented in the Congressional Record: “Using the military for law enforcement goes against one of the founding tenets of our democracy.” Leahy further condemned the process, declaring that it “was just slipped in the defense bill as a rider with little study. Other congressional committees with jurisdiction over these matters had no chance to comment, let alone hold hearings on, these proposals.”

Question 3 for Cal Malenky :
Who said my administration is considering an executive order to allow for indefinite detention without trial or charges while speaking in front of the US constitution ?

Uh “dicatatorial government” run by “socialistic elite” ?

Athens GA, home of the University of GA. (OK, I admit that I went to GA Tech).

But also demonstrates the old adages that Georgia is actually 2 states: the State of Atlanta (and possibly Savannah) and the State of the rest of GA.

  93. Ape-Man says:

This is all because Bush was a totalitarian.

  94. 4httr says:

” Well I wish I was in the land of cotton, old times there are not forgotten, look away, look away, look away Dixie land.”
I’m sure Mr Broun knows the tune by heart.

  95. ukeman123 says:

I hope we DO declare martial law on all wing nuts!

  96. Wiz says:

If Obama was everything Republicans say he is, they would be sitting in jail waiting trial.

Is that his wife looking over his shoulder in the picture? Quite a handsome lass. Looks like the outdoorsy type.
