Rep. Jean Schmidt Tells Birther: ‘I Agree With You’

Rep. Jean Schmidt (R-OH) spoke at the Voice of America tea party this Labor Day weekend outside of Cincinnati, OH. Following a tense Q&A session — during which, the congresswoman was booed for acknowledging that the Constitution is a living document — Schmidt engaged in a heated conversation with a birther off-stage. At the conclusion of their exchange, Schmidt whispered to the birther, “I agree with you, but the courts don’t.”

Think Progress attended the event and captured exclusive video of the exchange. Watch it:

As Schmidt spoke to the birther, one of her staffers spotted the ThinkProgress camera and used his body to push the cameraman out of view of the congresswoman. ThinkProgress continued to film Schmidt from a respectful distance, but was again stopped by another staffer who grabbed the cameraman by the arm and ordered him to “go away.”

Schmidt was among the members of Congress featured in Firedoglake’s Know Your Birthers video. In the FDL video, Schmidt can be seen running away from blogger-activist Mike Stark when he asked whether or not she has any questions about President Obama’s citizenship status.

In July, following her 15 minutes of YouTube fame, Schmidt’s office issued a statement to Ohio’s Loveland Magazine to clarify her views:

The President is indeed a Citizen of this country. I voted as a Member of the House to certify the vote of the Electoral College electing him as our President. I may not agree with his politics but there is no doubt he is our President and has my full respect as such.

Schmidt’s exchange with the birther this weekend directly contradicts her July statement. The footage appears to indicate that Schmidt is a closet birther who questions the citizenship of the President.

I don’t think that she is a closet birther.

I think that she is a slimebag who will do and say anything to stay in office.

She is emblematic of the repiggie disconnect with any trace of honesty.

Screw her, screw the repiggies, and screw the teabagger trash.

Actually it is great question to ask the members of Congress who go along with the birthers: “If you believed Obama was not a Citizen why did Dick Cheney stand up at a joint session of Congress announce the results of the electoral college? Do you believe that Dick Cheney is part of a conspiricy to install a non-citizen as President?” Or how about “Why did you attend the session of Congress announcing that Obama was elected if you believed he was not a citizen?”

I’m not so sure, muzz. If the GOoPers were making logical arguments then the Dems would have to respond in kind. However, the fantastic batscat comming from the Reichwhiners doesn’t really deserve to be dignified with a response. There is a danger that the crazy conspiracies would take more hold if the Dems answered them as though they had any particular merit.

And, frankly, I’m still enjoying watching the Reichwhiners descend into complete madness in their attempts to vilify our President and, incidentally, the majority of the electorate. Their calling us all “socialist, fascist, communist, satanist, traitors” doesn’t seem to be gaining them much ground with thinking people. I say let ‘em rave on.

Your going to have to forget what some words mean. One, for instance is liberal, we all know what it doesnt mean. Poor, welfare, hollywood, hippies etc etc etc.

So lets go back to the more original intent of the word in that it means individual. So, in that definition Obama Bot thinking cannot exist. Now, if your one of those hive brainers that want everyone to follow the same Lord, God, religion and core values, thats just cookie cutter thought.

  67. belaccifer lacca says:

Everyone has been programmed to some degree. Why do you vote for Democrats?

    I’ll answer for myself, Storm.

I vote for Democrats in the hopes that enough will be elected to enact real change in this country so that we have better healthcare, a better educational system and a more robust economy.

Democratic policies would benefit both myself and the majority of Americans.

Why people continue to vote AGAINST their interests and support a Republican party that caters to the extremely wealthy at the EXPENSE of both our citizens and economy is beyond me…

…perhaps you have some insight. I doubt it, but perhaps…

  68. pete says:

The problem, muzz, is that they don’t obey logic as we do. I read an article about the Reichwing mind that has some interesting findings.

They found that 34% of GOoPers who were told that Saddam had WMD continue to believe it without question. However, among the group who was then shown the data that proved Saddam didn’t have WMD that number spiked to 74%. Refuting the lie actually reinforced it in what the author termed the “backfire effect”.

That’s why I think that the best tactic is to simply ignore them. It’s impossible to educate them so engaging them just doesn’t have an upside.

  79. kasinca says:

    STORM says:

Everyone has been programmed to some degree. Why do you vote for Democrats?
    =============================================================

Simple: Republicans have been failures for the past thirty years. They are liars. They live off dirty tricks. They stand for nothing that is good for the masses of citizens. They are too silly to understand they are carrying water for corporations. The main reason today is that the GOP has been overtaken by the right wing fringe lunatics that William F. Buckley fought so hard to keep out of the fold for so many years. The GOP is being run by lunatics.

  80. pete says:

I voted “straight tickets” in the last two elections because the GOP is now populated by greedy, moronic, parodies of humanity. While it gives me no particular satisfaction, the plain fact is that there’s only one viable party in this country. And it sure as Hell ain’t the GOP.

Heck! The average GOoPer is so delusional that they can’t recognize fact from fiction. That, to me, disqualifies them from public service.

  81. Xisithrus says:

I go with the people who identify themselves because they treat other people better than most self identified republicans do.

They are more compassionate, more forgiving, realize that we all march to our own beat, they listen to many viewpoints and dont denigrate those that dont follow their ideology verbatim.

Look at the democratic party, its a very loose knit group, hardly communist, and not in any way wanting to create a communist society, all the talk of Marxism is complete BS. Marxism is crap to me. Its psychological BS meant to empower a few over the many. Religion, I like religion for the most part but I dont like people telling me that my soul needs to be saved, that I will burn in hell if I dont listen to them, become them. That kind of prosyletizing I dont care for,

  82. barfly says:

Everyone has been programmed to some degree. Why do you vote for Democrats?

  83. Leftside Annie says:

    STORM says:

Everyone has been programmed to some degree. Why do you vote for Democrats?

I choose for myself, those who have MY best interests and the best interests of AMERICA at heart – not their fat wallets or their vile bigotry. If they are Democrats, I’ll vote for them.

Party does NOT come first with me.

  84. Xisithrus says:

So, No, the unlected democrats, my POV, are not Marxists [outdated crap] are not in any way communal, nor do they want government to tell people where to work, what they are best suited for, what their pay will be, where they will live.

If you listen to some demonizing pundit they will tell you what they dont know but believe to be true. Forget them.

  85. NinerFan says:

The only reason party ever comes first for me is pragmatism. The Greens better represent my opinions, but they have no chance at wielding any political muscle until they take the time to grow from the town, to the county, to the state and so on. In fact, at this point, they’re a detriment to progress. If it were not for the Greens, a million Iraqis and thousands of Americans wouldn’t be staring up at us from the ground.

  86. pete says:

I might add that, while making my decision about who to vote for, I did consider criminal records and education history. If any of the local Dems had been convicted criminals or had been educated at a religious “college”, I would have had to go to third party, or independent, candidates.

    > Because most of my friends have been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, and it is tough to hear of any more soldiers dying, and me being afraid one of my friends is next. There is no reason for any of them to be where they are currently.

    > Because in a few years I will fall into a donut hole where I will not have a unionized teacher job yet, but I will be too old for my parents health insurance. If I get sick or hurt, I’d basically be bankrupt and my life ruined before it got started.

    > Because Dubya decided to fritter away budget surpluses on frivolous tax cuts and unnecessary wars instead of maintaining the sensible course we were charted on. We might not have all of our debt paid off by now, but if we maintained that course the credit card lender (in this case China) wouldn’t eventually balk at us being a perpetual debtor nation.

    > Because Republican deregulation, voodoo, yellow trickle-down, laissez-faire economic policy led to this current deep recession. Foxes don’t guard henhouses very well, and since Reagan the foxes see no farmers in sight.

Package the lies, use a lot of subliminal messaging, make it simple-stupid, and too many people will fall for it hook, line and sinker. A few minutes ago I received a call from Colonel Danny Bubp, Ohio Representative from the 88th district in the House of Representatives. He asked me to send Congress a message: Stay the course. He also asked me to send Congressman Murtha a message, that cowards cut and run, Marines never do. Danny and the rest of America and the world want the assurance from this body — that we will see this through.[29]
Schmidt’s remarks threw the House into an uproar and earned her the sobriquet “Mean Jean”. Many Democrats saw it an attack against Murtha, a 38-year Marine Corps veteran. After she said “cowards cut and run, Marines never do,” angry Democrats nearly drowned out her words. Victor F. Snyder, a former Marine, of Arkansas demanded that Schmidt’s remarks be “taken down.” Under this disciplinary procedure, the House clerk would have re-read Schmidt’s words and the presiding officer (at the time, Michael K. Simpson of Idaho) would have ruled whether they were parliamentary.[30]
After 10 minutes, Schmidt asked for and received permission to withdraw her remarks and apologized to Murtha.[31]
A spokeswoman for Bubp said that the state representative “did not mention Congressman Murtha by name nor did he mean to disparage Congressman Murtha” and that he felt “the words that Congresswoman Schmidt chose did not represent their conversation.” The Cincinnati Enquirer reported Bubp said “he never mentioned. . . Murtha . . . by name when talking with Schmidt, and he would never call a fellow Marine a coward.”

Jean Schmidt-for-brains is the ultimate political whore, she will do or say anything a voter wants to hear.

I sense that you take Rep. Schmidt’s batscat personally, cowboyneok. If it’s any conciliation? I live just two blocks outside Shelly Bachmann’s (InsaneR-Mn.) District.

Jean may be as mean as Crazy Shelly but, she can’t quite match the level of mental dysfunction and sheer wackiness.

Schmidt v. Krikorian Hearing Offers ‘High Drama’
‘High drama at the otherwise sleepy Ohio Elections Commission’…
LATE UPDATE: HEARING CONTINUED TO OCT. 1, SIBEL EDMONDS COULD TESTIFY; MORE: SUGGESTS FBI TESTIMONY AS WELL…

  111. Big Dan says:

Krikorian says that Schmidt, co-chair of the Congressional Turkish Committee, accepted more money from Turkish interests during last year’s campaign than any other member of Congress, despite few, if any, ethnic Turks among her local constituency. He has suggested she may have been instrumental in helping to hold off a Congressional vote on a long-proposed, much-disputed resolution declaring the deaths of 1.5 million Armenians during WWI as a “genocide” by the Turks.

It’s a major difference between Dems and Republicans. Van Jones resigned because of a petition he signed. Republicans resist resigning even when they’ve broken the law. lazer epilasyon
