GOP Lawmakers Treat President Obama’s Joint Address To Congress Like A Town Hall Protest

Tonight during his joint address to Congress, President Obama attempted to set the record straight on some of the “key controversies” surrounding the health care debate. While it’s normal for members of the opposition party to occasionally not clap at statements with which they disagree, congressional Republicans went further tonight, being outright rude at times.

At one point, President Obama addressed the myth that his health care proposals would insure undocumented immigrants: “This, too, is false – the reforms I’m proposing would not apply to those who are here illegally.”

In response, Republicans not only began booing him, but Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) shouted out, “LIE!” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) shot an angry look in his direction, and Vice President Biden shook his head. The rudeness shocked even veteran political observers such as NBC’s Chuck Todd, who wrote on Twitter, “Wow. What’s next a duel?” MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough also wrote, “Whoever shouted out that the president was lying is a dumbass who should show the President respect.” On MSNBC after the speech, Newsweek reporter Howard Fineman said, “The Republicans were mostly stage props in this speech tonight and they behaved like it.”

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) could also be seen wearing holding a homemade sign — similar to the ones seen at town hall protests — around his neck, which read, “What bill?” Watch it:

Various Republican lawmakers were also holding up draft GOP bills during the speech:

Transcript:

Still, given all the misinformation that’s been spread over the past few months, I realize that many Americans have grown nervous about reform. So tonight I’d like to address some of the key controversies that are still out there.

Some of people’s concerns have grown out of bogus claims spread by those whose only agenda is to kill reform at any cost. The best example is the claim, made not just by radio and cable talk show hosts, but prominent politicians, that we plan to set up panels of bureaucrats with the power to kill off senior citizens. Such a charge would be laughable if it weren’t so cynical and irresponsible. It is a lie, plain and simple.

There are also those who claim that our reform effort will insure illegal immigrants. This, too, is false – the reforms I’m proposing would not apply to those who are here illegally. And one more misunderstanding I want to clear up – under our plan, no federal dollars will be used to fund abortions, and federal conscience laws will remain in place.

My health care proposal has also been attacked by some who oppose reform as a “government takeover” of the entire health care system. As proof, critics point to a provision in our plan that allows the uninsured and small businesses to choose a publicly-sponsored insurance option, administered by the government just like Medicaid or Medicare.

Update Republicans are now coming out and condemning their colleague. On CNN, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said that Wilson's outburst was "totally disrespectful": "He should apologize immediately." Rep. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) said, "I thought that was unfortunate. [Obama's] the president. He deserves more respect than that."
Update CNN has posted a picture of Wilson's heckling:

hecklerjoewi

Update On Fox Business News, Karl Rove and host Neil Cavuto thought Wilson shouting at the President was hilarious. "Joe Wilson, good guy," said Rove. "Lovely," agreed Cavuto.
Update Wilson apologizes:

“This evening I let my emotions get the best of me when listening to the President’s remarks regarding the coverage of illegal immigrants in the health care bill. While I disagree with the President’s statement, my comments were inappropriate and regrettable. I extend sincere apologies to the President for this lack of civility.”
Update After Obama's speech, chief of staff Rahm Emanuel reportedly "approached two Republican House leaders, Roy Blunt and Paul Ryan and said, 'No president has ever had that happen,' and urged them to have the lawmaker 'apologize immediately.'"

Why is it that the opposition has no voice, no leaders,no ideas? Is no all they have? Whatever happen to that little tween kid?

This is the person that we voted for to fill the office of President of the United States. Rep. Joe Wilson is a disgrace to himself and to the district that he represents. No one ever shouted at George W Bush when stood in front of Congress and lied about WMD’s in Iraq.

  7. Wayne A. Schneider says:

I thought his inclusion of Ted Kennedy’s thoughts was brilliant. Health care is a moral imperative. And the idea that it’s perfectly okay to hold a treatment away from somebody just because they can’t pay for it is inhuman.

  8. dbadass says:

    Somebody needs a backrub…

  9. pete says:

The sad fact is that the same GOoPers will continue telling the same lies and the “librul media” will give them a pass. Yet, I’m overjoyed that the President dismissed the lies so thoroughly.

  11. Mugsy says:

What GOP’ers were holding up was barely what you’d call “a draft”. I’ve seen it. It barely qualifies as an “outline”.

My response to them: “What bill?”

  14. Spencer's mom says:

Sorry, not good enough. As I mentioned this morning, this Congress only has 16 months left to enact real healthcare legislation. If there is a waiting period before a public option is rolled out, the Dems will have lost, or at least dramatically decreased, their majorities, and the public option will never come to be.

And the ignorant GNOP dooshbag piece of shit who had the audacity to interupt a speech by the President with a shout of “LIAR!” should be publicly sanctioned by the House! Ignorance and disrespect – hallmarks of today’s GNOP.

    PEACE

  15. clif says:

Congressman Wilson of South Carolina needs to be publicly censured on the floor of the House of Representatives for verbally attacking the President of the United States during a speech to the combined congress of the United States.

NO member ever did this to the war criminal Bush …. EVER.

I guess respect for the Office of the President of the United States doesn’t include members of the republican party in congress after two historic losing elections.

I guess they can verbally attack the President of the United States while he addresses the nation in the chamber of the house, because as usual they live by special rules.

    their own.

    Not the nations

  16. Jim Wolf359 says:

I think the President made his case very well. He had more fire and passion than I have seen in a longgggg time. As to the American Taliban’s reaction:
I hope they like the hole they dug for themselves tonight. And if Rick Perry is able to pull off the secession thing for Texas, he can take South Carolina with him as far as I’m concerned.

  17. Cats r Flyfishn says:

When President Obama stated that there would be no privatizing of Medicare, none of the Republicans clapped.

  18. shawnfassett says:

it’s so cute to see the media pretend that they are shocked (SHOCKED, i tell you) at the treatment of the president, that they helped push along all summer long.

  19. Jane E. Schneider says:

Mugsy, they don’t need a draft or an outline, that one page just had “tax cuts” typed 100 times.

    – - I tried leaving a love note at the Congressman’s website. Apparently he was getting lots of attention because his site crashed.

  21. Mugsy says:

The level of disrespect was astounding!

Even Bush, atthe high of the Iraq War, didn’t receive such treatment from Democrats.

Beyond the heckling, GOP’ers didn’t stand or clap even for trifels like “no one should go broke over healthcare” (or whatever the line was).

  22. Zooey says:

    Jane,

Or “no” typed 1000 times. :-D

  23. Peashooter says:

Rude wasn’t the word. Jackasses fits better.

If they want to fight then GOOD. We can fight all the way to the midterms and instead of these bogus polls driving government lets see via ELECTION what the people REALLY want!

The President can use federal money in TWICE the amount than what business opposition uses for media ads. Republicans want to return tax money to the people, we can do it through Advertising agencies!

  28. Badmoodman says:

Lawmakers Treat President Obama’s Joint Address To Congress Like A Town Hall Protest

    – - Priceless

    Andrew Sullivan:

But there was something clarifying about a Southern good ol’ boy yelling “Liar” at the president over illegal immigration. That’s what the GOP now is: the worst aspects of the old Democratic party combined with a nihilism that is only eclipsed by its catastrophic governance for the past eight years. Defeating these morons and actually creating a discourse for reform is what we elected Obama to do.

But they still insist on doing it to themselves, don’t they? That’s the silver lining.

  29. Spencer's mom says:

Jane and Zooey, I think it was Cantor’s old 4-page bubble chart from months ago. Ya know, the one they called a press conference to present only to get laughed down.

Doubt they’ve come up with anything new. Maybe they were waving checks from insurance contributors?

    PEACE

  30. Mugsy says:

Ha, ha, ha… now that is funny.

  32. pete says:

I was just thinking the same thing, Zooey. By this time tomorrow Rep. Dipsh!t will be the GOP front runner for the Presidential nomination. At least according to FAUX.

  35. Wiz says:

I just don’t see how it could have gone better politically for the Obama speech. Details not withstanding, the speech and the Republican rude behavior will turn this thing around. Plus Obama taking them down on the lies. This very well could be the day the that will mark the death of the Republican.

Also bonus points for the great Congressman who shouted out, “it a lie”, the media can hound him for a couple of weeks, it just doesn’t get better than this. The tide has turned.

  36. evangenital says:

    Chubby pasty-faced slimebuckets…

By the way, the repiggie clown that gave the rebuttal baloney has been sued three times for medical malpractice.

  37. Wayne A. Schneider says:

The main problem the Republicans have (besides that their party is morally bankrupt) is that none of their arguments against what was floating around was coherent. Since they never had a plan of their own, and never intended to come up with one, they never had a single, solid argument against the proposals out there. They never accurately or truthfully said why something was bad, just that it was bad.

Since they have no intention of voting for any kind of reform, there is no reason to capitulate on anything! There is no reason to vote for a bill watered down by people who aren’t going to vote for the end product anyway. All you end up with is a bill that doesn’t do enough and maintains or exacerbates the problems we already have.

  38. Rich H says:

    badmoodman,

I don’t like Andrew Sullivan and I never have (probably never will). He slams the republican loons by saying it’s composed of the worst aspects of the old democratic party.
He’s a real ahole – always has been.

  39. Fred says:

I thought he hit it out of the ball park.

I loved the way he fed them their own slop in public.

    Especially that weasel mccain.

  40. Mugsy says:

For those who are wondering, the asshat that showed astounding disrespect for the President of the United States by shouting “Liar!” was “Joe Wilson” (no relation) of South Carolina.

To think he share the name of someone we all respect. :(

  41. Chessmaster says:

    bzb says:

Are they holding up their one page health care reform bill?

Yep, they typed it up that morning and made photocopies. If you look closely, you notice it’s a death warrant of the middle class.

  42. Jane E. Schneider says:

“By the way, the repiggie clown that gave the rebuttal baloney has been sued three times for medical malpractice.”

Evangenital, not to mention that he out-and-out lied about ‘government-run healthcare replacing’ people’s current private plans. He apparently didn’t bother to read the speech that he was rebutting. What a dickwad!

Dirtbag mother-frocking-wingnut snotballs. It wasn’t too long ago when simply voicing opposition to the stated policies of a president was labeled as treason, un-American, and giving aid to terrorists. So now it’s ok for flying monkeys to shout down a president addressing Congress. Joe Wilson, you are a living demonstration of what happens when a man screws his sister in a state where abortion is frowned upon.

  45. Jane E. Schneider says:

This is all the GOP can do. This is it.

The repiggie party is dominated by thugs, lunatics and crooks. Which combination is Wilson?

  49. Fred says:

Obama has fed them rope for a month now and tonight he kicked the stool out from under them.

Except for Joe Wilson (R-SC), he committed political suicide.

  50. Wayne A. Schneider says:

    lzcrmc says:

What’s the big deal? Isn’t this the same chamber where a sitting VP told a US Senator to [exlpetive deleted] himself?

No, that was on the Senate floor. This was the House chamber.

  51. Marie says:

    Great speech. Forceful. Passionate.
Too bad the repugniscum chose to continue to behave like juveniles at a school assembly.

As for Rove and Cavuto — we already knew they had no class, no respect, no integrity — they confirmed that. The classless, disrespectful morons who were watching them surely agreed.

  52. What the GOP REALLY means ... says:

I have read the proposal that my leaders were eager to turn in like giddy school children who hadn’t done their homework in a long time. I believe in it. The plan includes a McDonald’s menu, a compromise do-it-yourself surgery kit for all vital organs for every American and a health care lottery ticket for a FREE, one time consultation to a southern teabagger physician who graduated from a tier-3 medical school.

BONUS: A mock constitution with the republican amendment “No American shall be entitled to our #37-ranked health care without that dollop of green paper” is INCLUDED!

  53. Marie says:

Cantor was texting during the speech. Nice. Fitting his character.

  54. Trollspotter says:

The trollification of the Republican Party continues.

  55. jb says:

You could almost hear the Repukes thinking….if I stand and applaud will I still get my $ from the insurance lobby?

  56. evangenital says:

Actually, Cantor was searching on-line photos of Britney Spears.

    He likes those full-figured Jezebels.

  57. What the GOP REALLY means ... says:

Joe Wilson may be my new Town Hall Hero, but my party is absolutely F+UCKED!

  58. Wiz says:

Palin-Wilson 2012. The Republicans have their ticket.

  59. evangenital says:

I don’t recall Wilson objecting to the Bush lies about WMD’s in Iraq.

Come to think of it, I don’t recall any repiggies objecting to the massive amount of lying coming out of the Bush/Cheney White House.

Selective morality is like selective fundamentalism – an utter contradiction.

  60. Marie says:

Wilson must be censured or ostracized in some way for this childish outburst.
No one did this when Bush was there lying about a war.

But Cheney told another Senator to go f u c k himself and personally helped to lower the standard — which for repugniscum, is already pretty low.

  61. Badmoodman says:

Actually, Cantor was searching on-line photos of Britney Spears.

    – - I would think he was texting Mark Foley, ifyaknowwhatImean.

  62. Jim Wolf359 says:

There is no amount of damage control that can fix what ails the GOP Especially after tonight. The level of disrespect, rudeness and at times ridicul on diplay by the Rethugs tonight was sad, revolting, and emblamatic of just how banckrupt the GOP is morally and intellectually.
And Joe Wilson (Idiot-SC)? Wait till Pelosi gets done with him.

  63. tombaker says:

Bratty children at least have youth for an excuse.

Wilson should find his “office” relocated to a basement hallway for the remainder of his term, and Congressional staffers should be ordered to replenish all his desk drawers with dog poop daily.

Otherwise, I’d encourage the R’s, and Righties in general, to keep bringin’ the hissy. Just like Hillary did back in primary season, they’ll discover too late that the harder they toss tantrum, the stronger Obama gets.

  64. Whenwillthisnightmareend says:

The GOPiss in the well party is true to its principles, the party of, as Joe Scarborough puts it, dumbasses.

  65. evangenital says:

The repiggie congress critters always remind me of those 40-ish nutcases weaving in and out of interstate traffic, honking and flipping off anyone who gets in the way of their monster SUV’s.

  66. What the GOP REALLY means ... says:

Now that we’ve really f’d ourselves over tonight, with Boustany not helping matters much, my party intends to shout the same 1994 talking points EXTRA hard. Teabagging dynamite. Town halls on acid.

You see, when we are confronted with facts and logic we don’t change our ways, we ratched up our antics. This president is now back on a roll and we have to scream even louder. Our alternative reality is the most beautiful thing since those great whites spotted in Massachusetts.

  67. evangenital says:

Shouldn’t Karl Rove and Neil Cavuto, two very prominent repiggie chubsters, have been commenting on FoxNews’ exciting “reality” show which they aired during Obama’s speech?

At least that sort of “entertainment” is within the intellectual grasp of those two dingalings.

  68. clif says:

The repiggies knew they couldn’t get caught on camera applauding the president cause the right wing insanity radio shows would call them out, then they would have to go kiss one very fat ass in Florida.

Putting aside the fact that Obama’s speech was perfect in content and tone and passion, I think we should appreciate the repugniscum, especially Rep. Joe Wilson.
They, in their juvenile and disrespectful behavior, demonstrated for all who were watching that they are the problem. They are the ones responsible for the miserable state of our health care. They are the ones who will object and obstruct Obama just because they can, and the public be damned.
America could see tonight that the president is passionate about his advocacy for the average American; he is determined to make their lives better; and America could also see that the repugniscum are a scourge on the nation, that it is the repugniscum party at the core of the problem in health care and in Congress.

Beg it of all Americans and specifically beg it of President Obama.

For the next few weeks this fool, his disrespectful attitude and his lie will be disected by the media and the truth will be heard. He and his bellligerent colleagues will be unmasked for the corporate shills, charlatans and liars that they are. Maybe not on a grand scale but at least Americans with an IQ over 75. Thank you Mr. Wilson and now kindly go Cheney yourself with a stick and don’t come back until you learn to play nice with the adults. Anyone know if this @sshat is up for election next year?

Sorry, GOP, but a few circles filled with slogans and stock photos of happy families isn’t a plan.

Well, it’s a PR plan, but it sure as hell ain’t a health care plan.

So please either come up with a serious, thoughtful, workable, helps-most-Americans plan, or just … well, STFU and go away.

You can even be mad if you want to. We really don’t care.

  110. jondor says:

    http://www.factcheck.org/2009/08/seven-falsehoods-about-health-care/

False: Illegal Immigrants Will Be Covered

One Republican congressman issued a press release claiming that “5,600,000 Illegal Aliens May Be Covered Under Obamacare,” and we’ve been peppered with queries about similar claims. They’re not true. In fact, the House bill (the only bill to be formally introduced in its entirety) specifically says that no federal money would be spent on giving illegal immigrants health coverage:

H.R. 3200: Sec 246 — NO FEDERAL PAYMENT FOR UNDOCUMENTED ALIENS

Nothing in this subtitle shall allow Federal payments for affordability credits on behalf of individuals who are not lawfully present in the United States.

Also, under current law, those in the country illegally don’t qualify for federal health programs. Of interest: About half of illegal immigrants have health insurance now, according to the nonpartisan Pew Hispanic Center, which says those who lack insurance do so principally because their employers don’t offer it.

  111. livelongandprosper says:

Joe Wilson was picked by the GOP to help change the message from whatever Obama tried to change it too. Wilson is a good story for progressives to hammer the conservatives with, but the REAL story is what Obama has said.

    Dear sir,

Your behavior during the the president’s speech this evening was outrageous and disgusting. You should apologize to President Obama, to the congress and to the American people. Not since Joseph McCarthy has the nation’s capital witnessed such boorish and indecent manners. I want you to know that I will support all efforts and petitions for congressional censure against you. You are a disgrace.

    Wilson apologizes:
“This evening I let my emotions get the best of me when listening to the President’s remarks regarding the coverage of illegal immigrants in the health care bill. While I disagree with the President’s statement, my comments were inappropriate and regrettable. I extend sincere apologies to the President for this lack of civility.”

    Dear Mr. President,

Thank you so much for your great speech this evening, and for staying classy in the midst of outrageous behavior on the part of certain of your audience.

Please, sir, don’t back off from an at least acceptable public option. Too many of us are 1 paycheck or pinkslip away from healthcare disaster.

Also, sir, thank you for not dignifying the media “pundits” calling you all sorts of things (although I, personally, would not consider “socialist” an insult, as much of our public sector is and needs to be socialized!). Keep your head up, Mr. President, and know that this skinny 52-year-old white dude in Los Angeles has your back, at any and all opportunities. (and I work for a pretty conservative company… although privately, more and more people I know across the country in my firm support you each day.)

Thank you, and God Bless You, Sir!

I did something I have never done before tonight: I wrote and sent an e-mail to a government official, in this case Rep. Joe Wilson R-SC. If I had any money to spare (college textbooks and tuition wiped out the spare money), I would be contributing to whomever the Democratic opposition is in 2010.

His outburst was the cherry on top of a pathetic performance by the Republican opposition tonight. It was also disgraceful and probably planned in advance. Just like every other charade this summer by an increasingly desperate Republican party.

Unfortunately, the fascist rank and file probably lapped it all up. They are probably all cheering for this disgrace of a Congressman and vocally agreeing with the explosive charges.

I can respect people who disagree with the President. I disagree with him on quite a few issues myself. However, I cannot respect people who poorly disagree and disrespect the President.

    Basically, the Republican fascists.

  124. Mr. Sonia Herecomestheangst says:

I’m surprised the Republicans didn’t go all South Korean Parliament and try to throw fists or furniture. Didn’t any of them Good Ole Boys think to themselves they could have blocked the doors to the chambers and had the TV cameras all to themselves?

In 2002, the SCV was criticized in the media and by a group of SCV dissenters for the SCV’s views of Civil War history and the organization’s alleged association with neo-confederate individuals and organizations.
Joe Conason, writing in Salon, and Jason Zengerle, writing in The New Republic, have argued that the SCV has morphed from an apolitical organization dedicated to Civil War history to a politicized organization dedicated to preserving the “Lost Cause” version of the history of the Civil War and the 1861-1865 era.[20] The SCV states that “[t]he preservation of liberty and freedom was the motivating factor in the South’s decision to fight the Second American Revolution”.[3]

Civil War historian James M. McPherson has associated the SCV with the neo-confederate movement and described board members of the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond, Virginia as “undoubtedly neo-Confederate.”
He further said that the SCV and their equivalent for female descendants, the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC), have “white supremacy” as their “thinly veiled agendas.” [21]

Mr. Wilson: It is a sad day when the national political well is so poisoned that a sitting member of Congress would be so lacking in respect and manners as to shout during a joint session that the democratically elected President of the United States is a liar when he is telling the truth. This kind of behavior is the reason our country is so divided and the town halls were such ridiculous and scary spectacles as they were–rude, blatent behavior by Republican elected officials just because they have not gotten their way. Suck it up, Congressman. The Democrats won the election, they have majorities in the House and Senate, and, as Cheney would say, “It is our due.”

Dear Sir (and I seriously doubt if you deserve the courtesy of being called Sir),

As a former resident of South Carolina, I am appalled at your contemptuous behavior during President Obama’s speech this evening.

You may not agree with his policies, but to act as such greatly demeans the position you hold, as well as the people of South Carolina.

Your apology was weak. You should seriously consider resigning if you cannot contain your hostilities and blatant racism. In all of my 61 years, I have never seen such rabid behavior to any President, at any time. Yet, the majority of the Republicans, including YOU, are setting all time records for divisiveness.

I sincerely hope you are publicly censured by the House of Representatives, and it would be ideal justice if you were recalled from your position by the citizens of the state.

Although I don’t normally make campaign donations, and have very little cash to spare during this economic crisis – BROUGHT ON BY REPUBLICANS – I intend to send a donation to the person opposing you in the next election.

this is a bitter battle. Republican fundamental think that there are too many people. The bottom line is that they DO NOT want people to live. that why they vote to take away doctors education funding, hospital funding, and send thousands of people to war. They want less people.

  196. pags2 says:

Wilson’s outburst is a major breach of protocol. The uncivil behavior has moved Congress further away from the civility that existed before 1994. This does not bode well for State of the Union addresses to Congress. The failure by Republicans to denounce what happened is acquiescence to the behavior. A Republican president may find himself in the same situation. It is time for both parties to back away from this sort of behavior toward the President or other members of the government. If McCain and some of the other Republican leaders do not move to stop similar behavior, the sessions of Congress may turn into barroom brawls. Any Republican who thinks that this kind of conduct is permissible will find that Republican presidents will receive similar treatment. I should think that the Republican leadership would want to stop any further breaches of protocol.

  203. SP Biloxi says:

File tonight episode of the GOP party: Republican Gomorrah

I think the real GOP lawmakers were abducted by alien because the GOP that were sitting in their seats were really from Planet Wingnuttia. Some of highlights:

    1. Boner and the crew look heavy medicated tonight.

    2. Britney Cantor was caught on teevee playing with his blackberry while Obama was speaking.

    3. The stunned look on Boner and the Party of No’s face when Obama chastized those idiots on playing politics with the healthcare reform especially on the distorted lies on the death panels was simply priceless.

Otherwise, great speech from the heart by Obama as the Obama was speaking to the Party of No children as if he was their parent. The GOP acted tonight like a bunch of adult babies that ought to be wearing rubber diapers. Glad Obama gave them upfront notice that they will be called out i they play politics with the healthcare reform bill. The late Senator Kennedy who was probably there in spirit would be proud of Obama.

This is not going to be easy but Obama let the GOP and the public know where he stands. Finally, Rep. Joe Wilson’s rude remark to Obama tonight will not go away since this is the first time that anyone will disrespect a President at a news conference especially at s joint address with Congress. Van Jones’ scandal has taken a back seat. Although Wilson was made to apologize, too little too late. He made the history books. Can’t turn back time. And Wilson had to be from South Carolina as if there is enough problems in that state with lovesick Guv Sanford.

Update from DailyKos re: Joe Wilson

As of 11:15 p.m. PDT, ActBlue has tallied $72,178 for Rob Miller, Wilson’s foe in the next election. Kossacks for Democrat Rob Miller have raised $38,474 of that total.

  206. stovob says:

Over 200+ comments and I haven’t read them all, so sorry if this sentiment was already posted.

While Wilson’s comment was stupid and disrespectful it was not so simply because he made it in the joint session speech, and to the president. I would have LOVED for someone to have stood up during Bush’s numerous speeches before congress and called him out on the lies that he was spouting.

Don’t respect power, respect the truth. Apparently the democrats respect power, and the republicans (Wilson included) respect the eerie voices in their heads that have no basis in reality.

  207. Lending Resource says:

You don’t have to like the guy but this isn’t an open forum nor is it a town hall meeting. The president… the leader of the United States was making a speech, addressing the issues. President Obama asked for ideas from everyone on this matter. Maybe the Republicans can finally come up with some instead of whining.

  208. bluesunflower says:

Damn. Why did this have to happen the same week Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are off.

And Wilson’s sorry my ass. Shame that a Senator needs to take a lesson from a Disney movie. Thumper’s dad would have thumped the hell out of him for that.

  209. SP Biloxi says:

The reactions from the South Carolina lawmaker of Wilson’s rude outburst to Obama? From CNN:

    1. House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, D-South Carolina:

“I was always taught that the first sign of a good education is good manners. I think that what we saw tonight was really bad manners,” he said. “And, having a spirited debate is one thing, exercising bad manners is another. That was beyond the pale — and I would hope that he would publicly apologize on that same floor to the president of the United States for that insult.”

    2. Lady Graham: “The president’s combative tone did not justify a member of Congress shouting out, ‘You lie,’ ” said Graham. “Our nation’s president deserves to be treated with respect. It was an inappropriate remark, and I am glad an apology has been made.”

    3. South Carolina Democratic Party Chair Carol Fowler:

“Once again a South Carolina Republican has embarrassed our state,” Fowler’s office said in a statement that referred to S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford’s extramarital affair.

“Never has any member of Congress shown such disrespect for the president during a speech,” Fowler wrote. “One would think that as a member of the military, Joe Wilson would have more respect and patriotism than he displayed tonight. When Congressman Wilson insulted President Obama, he also insulted the American public. Joe Wilson is a poor example of a statesman and an American. He owes an apology to the president and the American people.”

An embarrassment cloud over the South Carolina. Stay classy, Joe.

  213. Mike Hunt says:

The truly sad thing about Joe Wilson’s asinine remark is that the people he represents elected him and apparently approve of what he says. Remember this is South Carolina where Fux News is on in every hotel, bar, and restaurant that has electricity, and where the KKK is alive and well and that gave us Strom Thurmond. Can we expect any less? The arguments earlier in the thread about this being political suicide for Wilson are false. He was feeding red meat to the hyenas he represents. For Wilson, he just got himself re-elected last night.

  215. A Patriotic Anopheles Acting says:

When Obama stated that his door is always open for serious suggestions the crybabies held up waved their “proposals”. I know he would never go “off message” during a speech such as this but wouldn’t it have been priceless if he called them out on their theatrics?

“You there, what’ve you got there? A Republican proposal? You want me to take a look at it? How about right now, pass it up here! (GOPer reluctantly complies and sculks off) Hmm, let’s see…first page is just a doodle of me dressed as Hitler, niiiicccee(snickering from Rep side of the Chamber).(Turns page) Page three just has the word NO in bold type, repeated over the next three pages, great. What’s this part here say, “tax breaks for the wealthy”? Ha, ha now THAT’s a good one, haven’t heard that before. The next two pages are blank… (flipping through)…oh here’s something…nope, just a sketch of some boobies and bombs.
(Addressing GOP side)Well, I see you have done some hard work here. I’ll just take this proposal back to my office and go over it a bit more and one of my staffers will get back to you with any questions.

  216. Mugsy says:

    One last thought:

Sen. Wilson may have just done us all a huge favor by showing the rest of America (and notably President Obama, who was clearly taken aback by the outburst) just who these people really are. And may repel many moderate opponents not wanting to be seen as “one of them”.

The level of disrespect has been astounding, and should help ensure their minority status for the next decade.

  217. tom says:

Doctors will not turn these illegals in to be deported nor refuse them medical treatment. The latter is inconsistent with their Hippocratic oath. Anyone who shows up in the emergency room will get some care, and the only question is the extent.

  221. A Patriotic Anopheles Acting says:

Midas, first off let me say that it is NOT Obama’s plan. The Bill is written, negotiated and conceived in both the Senate and Congress (as if you didn’t know that already. “Obamacare” just sounds better to Repubs, no?)
Secondly, WHAT THE FU(K ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?

Where in any of the proposals does it discuss redistributing wealth to illegal immigrants you ignorant fool? You are aware that RIGHT NOW in America illegal aliens have access to healthcare through a bi-partisan sponsored Bill from several years ago right? Oh you didn’t know that huh? The current Bill being floated on the Hill presently clearly states that illegals WILL NOT be able to participate in the option. What don’t you idiots get about that? Is it too difficult for you to read ONE SENTENCE in a Bill that is publicly available to see before parroting lies that charlatans like Wilson feed you? You are truly ignorant (aside from your apparent racism). With a moniker like yours it’s no wonder that EVERYTHING the GOP touches turns to shit.

Remember, Jesus was a “community organizer”. Pontius Pilate was a governor. Which of these two would you hand the keys to the US Treasury?

From your proven gullibility in believing right-whiner lies, I’m sure you would rush to hand the keys to Pontius Pilate.

Pres. Obama has stated, unequivicably, that illegal aliens would not be universally covered under health care reform. What, you believe that only Republican Presidents tell the truth? You know, like how Iraq was reesponsible for Sept. 11th, and they had stockpiles of WMDs?

The problem for the conservative movement is that every time one gets into office, he quits being conservative. Nixon, Reagan, Bush jr. all ramped up the debt on useless things. Conservatism is a scam, for the easily gulled. The American people have awakened to it, and now reject it.

Because it, like Social Security, is run by people, so of course the system isn’t going to be perfect. There will always be room for improvement for Medicare, but all in all, it’s still a good program. On a side note,
Social Security is in trouble basically because there are more people drawing benefits from it that people who are putting money into it. Besides, Social Security will not be come bankrupt until 2041, which means that there’s enough time to fix it, and I think medicare is the same way, but I can’t remeber what year it’s supposed to run out of money (2040/2041?), but it can still be fixed. I know I went off on a tangent, but I kinda figued that someone would bring Social Security up as another example of “government waste”.

Sheesh, they make a huge fuss over the 2nd and 10th amendment but for some reason they don’t seem to care about the 8 amendments, because those are the ones that give us…..civil liberties? As I have not completed the slog thru it, they also have a 3 page Summary which excludes the critical ideas that should concern anyone with more than 2 children as it only allows for a $500.00 tax credit for each, limit 2.

It should be noted that it is not a complete bill but an amendment to current legislation, which makes all their “additions and changes” very difficult to evaluate.

But to be sure, it is a boom to Private Insurer’s and Physicians. Create “high risk pools” with no stated limit on the cost of premiums for those with pre-existing conditions. No mechanism to control cost of premiums. Payment to physician is based on specialty (which will continue the trend of those Family Practioners). And of course a provision to opt-out of all the government backed plans: Medicare, Medicaid, Tri-Care and VA….but of course they say they don’t want to end these programs, much like the previous administrations call to reduce funding to these programs (which would force them to insolvency), especially because they will re-institute the “trigger” mechanism that was eliminated in 2009 (which had not gone into effect – another rule courtesy of GWB).

This bill addresses the amount of $$$ for malpractice Punity Damages…max. of $250K and protects manufacturer’s of devices and drugs from malpractice if the drug/device has been approved by the FDA. It fails to address the these devices/drugs being used off-label, which is often the case in Medicare fraud…see DOJ Press released for monthly listing of cases prosecuted on exactly that!
