Right-wing group sponsoring Republican doctors rally supports privatizing Medicare.

The Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, a right-wing group that filed an amicus brief supporting Rush Limbaugh in his fight to keep his medical records private amid charges of doctor-shopping to obtain pain medication, was present with a booth at the FreedomWorks rally on Capitol Hill today. AAPS is sponsoring another event this afternoon with Republican leaders, including Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) and Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-GA). ThinkProgress caught up with an AAPS staffer, who explained that the group not only opposes health reform, but also supports privatizing Medicare:

Q: So you prefer a privatization of Medicare?

AAPS: Of Medicare? [...] Yes. We don’t think it’s very efficient at all.

Watch it:

The AAPS booth was busy making “homemade” protest signs and passing out invitations to a National Republican Campaign Committee reception at the NRCC’s fundraising offices in DC. View the invitation the AAPS handed out here.

Did anyone else notice that the Republicans were silent when Obama promised to never privatize Medicare as long as he is in office? They have been wanting to privatize Medicare for almost 40 years. It would be one more money grab from the American taxpayers.

Surgeons… now there’s a group that can be trusted to give patients options. The only option a surgeon offers is surgery. These people want to steal the taxpayers money just like Wall Street did.

And “tort reform” to cover their incompetent brethren.

Flesh mechanics, who could care less if the patient dies afterword, so long as they get paid.

Remember “the operation was a success – but the patient died” is their worldview.

  6. Spencer's mom says:

Interesting. There is a segment of Medicare that is privatized today. Well, not exactly privatized because it’s paid for in full by We the People, but it’s run privately. It’s callled Medicare Advantage, and it’s a boondoggle for BigInsurance. Costs us taxpayers tens of billions of dollars more per year than covering these same seniors under traditional Medicare, and Obama vowed to do away with the excess payments should he win, but hey, why start holding BigInsurance accountable now?

    PEACE

  7. lefturn says:

That’s what Health Care Reform would do, eliminate wasteful spending in some areas of Medicare.

Sheesh! Where have this A**holes been all this time?

  8. What the GOP REALLY means ... says:

If you privatize it that means you don’t need to care what happens to it. I’m onto it; it sounds fun. A few social security recipients will become rich and the rest will become road kill. Hands-off sounds great. By the way, did you know that Obama wants to cut social security?

When my son was 5 months old, he had extensive neurosurgery to correct his craniosynistosis (premature fusion of the cranial sutures). I was concerned about how much my AT&T coverage would cover at the time, but was willing to sell my soul to provide my son a normal future. The neurosurgeon told me not to worry about cost; whatever the insurance paid would be payment in full. There are not too many of these doctors and/or surgeons left.

You’ve got to wonder about the sanity of the right wing. I think they’ve completely lost their marbles. Their only two legitimate demographics are racist morons and old fools. If they keep on talking about privatizing Medicare and how Social Security and Medicare are unconstitutional I’m guessing they’ll even lose some of their old fools.

I am very happy for you and your son. And that neurosurgeon is a noble example of the medical profession. Why are any doctors opposed to a public option anyway? What do they care, they didn’t get into the profession to whine about a payment system, did they? It’s nothing in the way of contributing their skills to humanity. Presently, the private insurance system leaves a lot of paper work in the way; they should complain about that.

May the tough times your son faced lead to a strengthened lifetime bond between the two of you.

  18. whirlaway says:

This is what the progressive TV talk show hosts like Ed, Rachel and others should do :

    1. Show the interview again and again, and say repeatedly that the Regressives want to privatize Medicare

    2. In any interview with a Regressive guest, ask them the reason why their party wants to privatize Medicare

    3. Keep beating the drums – Ed reporting what Rachel said, Rachel repeating what Ed said, other radio hosts echoing what those two said, and on and on. Keep the issue going.

However, they won’t do that! So the issue dies a natural death within a few hours! :-(

Therein lies the reason why the progressives keep on failing!

AAPS believes Medicare, with it’s 3% overhead is inefficient. They’d rather we have a private insurance-based system with it’s much more efficient 15 to 30% overhead.

Would it be too much to expect conservative seniors to listen to this little a-hole AAPS staffer and think about how much they’d love losing their Medicare if these people had their way?

  22. blue53 says:

Not only do they want to privatize Medicare-they want to get rid of unions, social security, unemployment insurance, food stamps, every social program. #14, What the GOP Really means… that surgeon was more than noble. Dr. Robert Fraser, Director of Neurosurgery at Cornell Medical Center, NY was a truly caring human being. He was a gifted surgeon who gave his gift, without pretense or want of return, freely. I walked my infant son to the doors of the operating room and handed him over to Dr. Fraser’s care. Dr. Fraser hugged me, while cradling my young son, and said that he’d take care of him as if he was his own son. I owe that man more than anyone can know. My son, today, is a stapping, normal 16YO boy with no neurological damage (just a few lumps on his head). Today’s doctors need to take lessons from this unselfish man, who is now retired.

  24. Bozo The Neoclown says:

AAPS is a group of licensed professionals; the second, out of many of their possible purposes, may be an opinion of healthy private (medical) practices!?

  44. GG says:

If you want your doctor to spend more time with you, which is a good idea; do what one of my doctors does-he doesn’t take insurance of any kind, indpendent or medicare. You read that right, you pay him and if you have insurance, you have to file it. You would be amazed at how much time he can spend with you, doing it this way. Of course, you have to do all the paper work and deal with the insurance agencies-fun; but hey, this is free enterprise at it’s best, if you don’t like it, go elsewhere. He also doesn’t charge as much because he doesn’t have a hugh staff dealing with insurance.

    Hummer anyone….

  89. Wiz says:

A friend of mine called me last night crying. She is a 7th grade social studies teacher. One of the kids in her class called out “you lie” everytime she tried to teach in the class. She had just gotten off of the phone with the kid’s parent, and the parent said that she did lie, that social studies was just liberal indoctination. She is beside herself, heartsick about what to do with this intolerable situation.

simple: inform the kid that his/her parent is a moron and he/she would be better off being raised by her rice crispies

Did no one else notice that the AAPS screwed up their logo in this PDF…? “Association of American of American Physicians and Surgeons”

While you and I know this is obvious, telling the kid the truth about his parents probably won’t make much positive impact.

Most teachers in this situation would just send the kid to the principal’s office to get the disruption out of the way. And this makes some sense — why allow one kid to derail the entire class?

Unfortunately, this does nothing to help the kid, who, without some kind of intervention, will just grow up to be a parroting dittohead — incapable of independent thought.

A good teacher will realize that the best thing you can teach a kid is how to think. Any cry of “you lie!” should immediately be met with a challenge to present a coherent argument to the contrary — just like we do with the trolls here. If it’s a historical fact that’s challenged (such as what date Abraham Lincoln was assassinated), the kid would be shot down rather quickly. If it’s something a bit more subjective, like the effects of African colonialism, it could lead to a great class discussion — particularly if it’s a diverse class. Either way, the kid will have to come up with something more than slogans and soundbites he got from his parents and radio talk show hosts.

The best social studies teacher I ever had was one who never allowed a student to state a position with only bumper sticker sayings.

Medicare’s deficit will get larger and larger.

Unless Obama hires more fraud investigators. Wanna bet that’s also in the works, to help bring the cost down?

As I remember, Bush was decidedly lackadaisical about such investigations of his campaign contributers.

  94. christopher wiwi says:

This all we need now, doctors who put their political ideology before their hypocratic oath……….This is a very sad commentary on far right America today.

  95. bsober says:

Thank you for making me aware that the AAPS actually exists. It would be a good thing when choosing a new doctor to find out if they belong to such an organization. We cant eliminate the right-wing but if we made a strong effort we could starve them out!

  96. Mark701 says:

Oh yes, yes, yes, privatize Medicare by all means! I mean lets face it, sick people are a pain in the ass for any medical insurance company because they cut into profits. I’m sure the private sector can get it to run more efficiently by increasing overhead costs to 30%, paying their investors and CEO’s ungodly profits and booting all those slacker sick people off the plan. GO CAPITALISM!

  97. galmud says:

The AAPS booth was busy making “homemade” protest signs

Man these teabaggers are as lazy as they are stupid. How hard is it to make your own damn teaparty sign? Print a photo of Obama draw a Hitler mustache and you’re done!

  98. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

Oh yeah… Just go out there and ask Seniors if they want to turn their health care over to the for-profit health care industry. I seriously doubt you will get many takers.

  99. lvdragonlady says:

WHY would America want to turn over control of Medicare to the private sector? The private sector would treat seniors JUST like they do the rest of us, with NO coverage for this, NO coverage for that, they WOULD have death panels and the bottom line, they would cheat the American people and OUR moms, dads and grandparents out of their tax dollars and medication, to support their lavish life styles……….WTF???

  100. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

Another thought. Do they really think that the for-profit health care industry is going to welcome seniors with welcome arms and give them all good policies? This while charging 4x the rate they give to a 25 year old for someone over 60. Talk about breaking the bank. The vouchers given to seniors so that they can get the same coverage they now get under Medicare would have to be astronomical in the amount for it to have a prayer of working.

  101. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

I heard something interesting of Big Ed’s show yesterday. He thinks that Obama is brilliant with his insistence that it must be against the law for an insurer to refuse someone due to pre-existing condition or to cancel a policy once it is written. His thinking is that if these provisions are in a health care reform bill, that will take away the industry’s objection to a public option because they don’t want to insure anyone who might cost them money. I think that Ed just might be right.

  102. mimiga says:

Have some of you people lost your minds? The group of physicians who went to Washingon yesterday were not there to privatize Medicare. They were there to try and stop the government from instituting a public insurance plan that would eventually make us all subject to a Medicare type plan. This type of plan would prevent us from seeing our own doctors. The plans being bandied about in Washington now are not about health care reform or health care period. Are they the ones who will take care of you when you are sick? No. Are they the ones who will tell you what medical care you will receive? Yes.

  103. barfly says:

    mimiga says:

That’s a bunch of lies. I find it hilarious that you teabaggers said nothing about Bush running up the debt, but suddenly you’re all fiscal watchdogs. The plan does none of the things you fear, but your simpleminded authoritarian mindset constructs things that will never happen. And death panels? Get real.

  104. belaccifer lacca says:

This is bull, mimiga. And you need to stop distorting what we are talking about, sorry.

We are talking about making sure everyone has insurance.

And mimi, if you’re from GA, your gov. is planning on opting out, so quit hyperventilating.
