Census report: Number of uninsured Americans grows to 46.3 million.

bushcareA new Census report finds that, in 2008, the number of people without health insurance increased from from 45.7 million to 46.3 million (the number of uninsured has increased by 7.3 million since 2000). The report suggests that a weakened economy and rising health care costs are pushing more Americans towards so-called safety-net coverage. According to the data, “the percentage of people covered by government health insurance programs increased to 29.0 percent in 2008,” up from from 27.8 percent in 2007. The uninsured rate declined significantly for Americans under 18 and over 65 — the two groups who are eligible for government-sponsored coverage. The Wonk Room has more on the importance of public programs.

Update Pat Garofalo highlights the new poverty data: The poverty rate has risen to an eleven-year high of 13.2 percent, with 39.8 million people in poverty (an additional 8.3 million people fall below the poverty line under Bush).

These numbers are just the tip of the iceburg. There MILLIONS under-insured. Those so-called ‘Polls’ where everyone says they are satisfied with thier insurance are bogus. Who are they polling? Young people? Unemployed? Or the people they usually poll. The mostly elderly who are satified with their ‘Medicare’? Remember in 2008 and in 2006? MSM said in 2006, The Repugs would hold onto the House and Senate. And in 2008 The race between Obama and McCain was to close to call. Yeah Right! Obama kicked his but with 365 electoral votes compared with McCain’s measly 160 something. Score another one for the ‘Liberal’ MSM!

As we see more people lose their jobs and have to down size we learn the Insurance Companies are increasing the Primiums as they have already gone up 22 per cent. Now if Republicans are successful in blocking the Obama Health Care Plan the Primiums will go up 40 per cent more. Yes Rep. Wilson knows this as all the other GOP/Dems on the Insurance payrolls. Those who have insurance will blame Obama for their insurance going up and Republicans will say if McCain/Palin were in office this would never have happen. Bush/Cheney programed American Citizens to believe what their told and don’t read or use your brain and it has worked very well for 8 years so the GOP is just continuing the formular. Rep. Wilson has already gotten 260,000 dollars from the Insurance Companies for his vote and with his preformance he will get another big check. Look for other Law Makers who aren’t yet on the take to join in to get their free money for a vote.

Fear of Terrorism, fera of Immigrants, fear of ‘Socialism’, fear of Change and now fear that the ‘Government’ will pull the plug on Granma. Maybe they should try a new game plan.

  34. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

It’s going to grow much bigger starting early next year when the federal subsidy for COBRA for all those who have been laid off due to our wrecked economy can no longer afford to pay their premiums. I will be one of those uninsured. If I don’t find a job by January (looking doubtful it’s going to happen), I will have to take early retirement. There’s no way I will be able to afford the $550 monthly premium for just me when I am living on Social Security. And then there will be those who can afford the unsubsidized COBRA payments by COBRA finally runs out for them, after 18 months.

This is why I am appalled when I read that the reform they want to take place won’t happen until 3 years from now. We need it NOW, not 3 years from now. The quickest and most efficient way to do it is to allow all those without health insurance to enroll in Medicare. I’m fairly sure that can be done quickly. It’s the only solution that makes sense.

does anybody know how many of those 46 million are illegal aliens?

    September 10th, 2009 at 11:48 am
    ______________

Out of the 301 million people estimated for the population, 36.7 million are foreign-born. Of these, 15 million are naturalized and and 21 million are non-citizens. This does not mean that the 21 million non-citizens are here illegally – just that they are not yet naturalized.

Of the uninsured, 34 million are native born, eaning that about 12.9% of native-born Americans are uninsured. 12 million are foreign-born – meaning that 33% of immigrants are uninsured. Naturalized citizens fare pretty well – 2.7 million of them (18%) are uninsured. Whereas 9.5 million non-naturalized immigrants are uninsured – 44% of the total.

None of these numbers indicate legal status – only naturalization status. One could simply assume that “all illegals are uninsured,” in which case the maximum possible number of uninsured illegal immigrants is 9.5 million, but this is unlikely to be true. It’s entirely possible that some illegal immigrants using fake indentification to be hired are also covered by their company’s health plans or have purchased insurance on their own. It’s likely that the true number you seek is well below 9.5 million.

The real question is – why does it matter? Who does it hurt? Do you think private insurance companies would prefer not to accept money from 9 million potential customers? Do you think emergency department physicians would prefer not to spend their time on routine non-emergencies and easily-prevented ailments? Do you think public health professionals would prefer not to know what infectious diseases, say – swine flu – might be spreading rapidly among immigrant populations?

Ensuring that all people within our borders – citizens, noncitizens, legal immigrants, tourists, people visiting on business, and non-legal immigrants – have equal access to health care benefits all of us.

    ______________

Yes. Of people who do not qualify for current government programs and make less than $50,000/year. That roughly lines up with the census stats – there are 14.9 million in households with incomes between $25-50,000/year who are unininsured. There are another 13.6 million who earn less than $25,000, but many may qualify for government programs (I’m not sure where the cutoff is). There are also 8 million who earn $50-75,000 who are uninsured, and another 9.7 million uninsured in the $75,000 and up category.

Add ‘em all up and you get 46 million.

I think I’ll go with Factcheck for the “real number.”

    Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

    ——————————————————————————–

aaronk and STORM – I have a question for you.

As of January I will join the ranks of the uninsured. I lost my job in March and for the first time in my adult life I have been on extended unemployment. I lost my job because the non-profit I worked for couldn’t make payroll due to the slow payments they were getting from the State. It was not through any fault of mine.

So, do you really think that in the richest country in the world I should have to go without access to health care? Do you really think that health care should be a privilege and not a right for all Americans? If so, please tell us why.

Good question, and I am sorry to hear about your misfortune. 1st of all, it is false to say that you “don’t have access to healthcare”. Nobody is preventing you from going to the doctor just because you don’t have insurance. Yes, you would have to pay for it, and perhaps due to your misfortune, you can’t afford it, but to say that u don’t have “access” is misdirection.

On that same note, all Americans also have “access” to healthcare, and obviously have a RIGHT to healthcare. There are no laws that prevent people from going to the doctor.

Where the dissention comes in is when we talk about who should pay for it. I assume that you feel that you’re “right” to healthcare includes the assumption that that right extends to the “right” to force others to pay for your care. You care certainly entitled to that opinion, but I would ask that you also see that when I or anyone else is forced to provide a service for you or someone else, our rights are being violated in some form.

That also being said, I have spoken on several threads at this site about my idea of an NFP to provide care for people in your situation, funded by private donations, with government legislated tax incentives for doing so. I believe an idea like this fulfills the goals of the left by making sure all Americans are covered, but meets the needs of the right by not installing a “government takeover” of healthcare.

Most bases have ample room for growing corps, raising cattle and hogs for patient food. Children of the city could go on field trips to the medical facility’s, pet the animals and receive updated vaccine, shots and other care all in the same day. This plan is much more logical and cost effective than anything congress has done or will do…WATCH!

Yes, the military has a great capacity to bring health care to those who need it especially during natural disasters. The needy, who live mostly in the inner city’s like Chicago, which for all intents and proposes is a battle zone as more humans die from gun fire in Chicago than in Iraq, can be accessed with a Stryker Brigade much more safely than with ambulances private or city owned. In East LA where gangs run the city and police do not patrol the Abrams tank could be a very useful device to “hold the line” while the sick or injured could be safely medevaced with the Blackhawks in the US inventory ……….the closer you look the more this military angle makes sense

    STORM says:
    Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:
    Go buy an insurance policy.

OK, perhaps you can tell me how I can do that. My Social Security will be $1,100 a month. I am over 60 so if I can find someone to sell me an insurance policy the cost will be well over $1,000 a month.

Even if Blue Cross kept my rate at $550 a month, how could I afford that when my income is $1,100 and my mortgage payment is $650?

  157. NinerFan says:

Bilbo, I feel for you, but I’m a liberal. You’re asking a guy like Storm to have something called “empathy.” That’s a bridge too far.

  158. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

    aaronk says:
That’s great….I have seen the video, and Acorn has already acknowledged that it was there representative, but I guess that won’t stop you from denying it huh?

So, since ACORN had one bad apple in the barrel, that means that all of ACORN is a bad apple.

How many bad apples do you think there are in the major corporations you seem to be so in love with? How many bad apples do you think there are in the for-profit health care industry?

  159. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

    aaronk says:
So are you saying that the problem is high medical costs in the healthcare industry or the insurance industry?

All of the above. I’m still paying off an emergency room bill I incurred when I was temporarily unemployed two years ago. It’s either that or ruin my credit rating. Because the hospital could care less that I can’t afford to pay the bill and it doesn’t bother them in the least that they charged me the equivalent of over $1,800 an hour for the use of their emergency room. And the reason why emergency rooms charge such exorbitant rates? Because they need to make up for all the money they lose for treating the uninsured.

  160. NinerFan says:

I’ve posted this before, but one of my old friends has had to declare bankruptcy because his wife was struck in a hit-and-run. They were insured, but the out-of-pocket expenses were in the thousands and they didn’t have it. At least they’re not homeless, but they live in fear now because they’ve been dropped by their insurance company and can’t get an affordable new policy because he’s 59 years old and she has a pre-existing condition. What conservatives don’t seem to understand, or worse, understand, but don’t care about, is that this happens every single day in America. Every day.

ACORN had 11 more people arrested a few days ago. Yeah, 1 bad apple.

  162. NinerFan says:

AaronK: “ACORN had 11 more people arrested a few days ago.”

Look, you’ve already demonstrated over and over that your “facts” are usually not facts at all, but the result of some distortion you’ve been fed by right-wing sites.

Why should anyone believe what you post if you’re not going to give a citation. Where did you read that 11 ACORN employees were arrested a few days ago? I’m not saying I don’t believe that could happen. But, with your track record around here, I’m skeptical.

  163. NinerFan says:

OK, aaronk, this is a perfect example.

From Fox News: “Fernandez-Rundle said ACORN alerted her office after it reviewed hundreds of voter registration cards it suspected were fraudulent. She said that none of the names in question actually voted.

“While they were attempting to steal from ACORN, they were stealing from our electoral process and we just will not tolerate that,” she said.”

ACORN alerted the Florida Sec. of State because ACORN found that people were defrauding them. Those are the facts. I want you to remember the facts when you go read conservative opinion makers who are going to tell you that ACORN is a fraudulent organization.

  164. SlappyBastinado says:

Bilbo Hussein Baggins whines: about not enough income….do what everyone else does….shackup, marry, rent to, live with, camp out at someone elses place that can take care of you. Sheeeesh! How do you think millions of Americans live?????? You need to purchase a couple of rental units OR manage a few and poor people in action…..get some education.

  165. conservative guy says:

In Obama’s speech he claimed there are only 30 million uninsured.

    aaronk says:

and btw, please tell me how “my party” has nurtured illegal aliens?

They hire them as illegal nannies, and undocumented field workers in their businesses.

And on a secondary note, common sense tells us that the party of the Rich-Folks-And-Business-Owners is more likely to be the main party of the Rich-Folks-And-Business-Owners-Who-Hire-Cheap-Folks-So-That-They-Can-Stay-More-Rich.

  168. bluesunflower says:

Y’know, I work 2 jobs at usually 14 hour days. It’s nice to know there are people who believe I’m not worthy to get health insurance because my contributions to society as a Driver Education instructor and substitute teacher are somehow more lacking than the contributions of someone like aaronk.

Whatever dude. Grow up and get a conscience. I feel sorry for your employees and the comtempt in which you so clearly hold them.

  169. NinerFan says:

Bluesunflower: “I feel sorry for your employees and the comtempt in which you so clearly hold them.”

Blue, you don’t really believe someone like that poster has employees do you? Forgetaboutit! If that guy’s a boss, I’m Elvis Presley. Remember, the vast majority of the American people believe that you should have affordable healthcare, and many of us, myself included, believe you should have the same kind of plan we give to our seniors; Medicare for everyone. Hang in there. I think we’re going to get some real progress.

  170. EdgeOnIt says:

The Bureau of the Census, an agency of the United States Department of Commerce, was formerly an agency within the United States Department of the Interior; and that department was formerly a part of the U.S. State Department, but existed so until the year 1849. That year, Secretary of the Treasury, Robert J. Walker, under eleventh U.S. President James Polk, began the first of a series of needed changes to the structure of agencies. By this time in our history, many immigrants had begun to settle in America, many new and different territories had been added to the United States, and a Mexican-American war had been fought and concluded, as if a ‘wake up buzzer’ had sounded to Secretary Walker, who might have thought then, that times had changed and bureuacratic change could benefit certain agencies of government! For example, according to Secretary Walker, the General Land Office was, strangely, written in the Department of the Treasury!

Walker had argued that several agencies were not practically serving their departments, and some agencies were moved, such as the Indian Affairs department, out of the Department of War, and the Patent Office, out of the Department of State; also, the independent central office of the census (est. 1840) became part of the new Department of the Interior! One of the very first federal departments established had been the Department of Foreign Affairs (est. 1789, by 1st U.S. President George Washington) and was actually established by two pieces of legislation, however, the second of two Congressional acts merely renamed that important department, as The State Department; in 1849 Secretary Walker had prioritized his changes with the establishment of a new Interior Department, with previously, State Department responsibilites!

After all the dust had settled, in 1849, and along with needed departments and agencies, the United States was ready, more than ever, to take on any new challenges, of the mid-nineteenth century!

Obama is a politician who wants the votes of the wealthy insurance company executives, bank executives, and the auto company execs. When HR 3200 passes it will “force” all the citizens of the U.S. to pay for health insurance. botoks
