In his speech last night, President Obama addressed some of the various myths and misrepresentations that have been spread about his health care reform efforts. When Obama called claims that he would “set up panels of bureaucrats with the power to kill of senior citizens” a “lie, plain and simple,” he received a standing ovation from the Democrats in Congress. Republicans, on the other hand, largely sat on their hands. Watch it:
According to The Hill’s Walter Alarkon, the only Republican senators seen standing and applauding Obama’s dismissal of the “death panel” myth were Sens. Olympia Snowe (R-ME), Susan Collins (R-ME), Bob Bennett (R-UT) and Judd Gregg (R-NH). “Four or five House Republicans also appeared to stand and applaud Obama’s remark, but it’s unclear which ones they were,” writes Alarkon.
Of course they couldn’t stand and acknowledge this, the whole house of cards that they’ve built around that lie would have come tumbling down.

September 10th, 2009 at 1:33 pmThe compassion exhibited by the compassionate conservative party simply overwhelms me at times.
September 10th, 2009 at 1:33 pm‘no one should go broke because they get sick.’
Because republicans only know how to do 2 things; hold out one hand for a check and hold their pocket open with the other hand.
September 10th, 2009 at 1:35 pmI noticed the same thing about the lack of Republican applause on the “no one should go broke” line in the comments of last nights thread.
If last night doesn’t finally expose exactly who these people are to the rest of the country and resign them to the dustbin of obscurity for the next decade, nothing will.
September 10th, 2009 at 1:39 pmThey should cut that portion Nate pointed out with a few other sympathetic moments showing how compassionate the GOP are regarding every day American’s health and store it away for some time when they need it.
September 10th, 2009 at 1:44 pmRepublicans wouldn’t applause the denouncing of their #1 talking point against healthcare reform.
September 10th, 2009 at 1:44 pm#1 Raynman- My thought exactly!!! That’s their best lie, they can’t acknowledge it.
September 10th, 2009 at 1:44 pmWell said Mugsy. the GOP have shown there true colors.
September 10th, 2009 at 1:44 pmMost of these Republicans depend on keeping these myths alive (it’s all they’ve got) and plan to go on perpetuating them after President Obama’s speech. They’re making the assumption that their kool-aid drinkers upon whom they depend for campaign funds didn’t watch the speech anyway.
But just to make sure, the last thing they want is a YouTube floating around showing them demonstrating any support whatsoever for the man they want to fail.
I just hope that President Obama was serious when he said he would call people out when they deliberately lie about health care reform.
September 10th, 2009 at 1:47 pmWell, props to those that applauded then.
September 10th, 2009 at 1:49 pmMeanwhile , these same jackasses applauded wildly like retarded wind-up monkeys whenever Chimpy McFlightsuit gave one of his unintelligible , English-butchering speeches……
September 10th, 2009 at 1:50 pmTheir whole demeanor was rigid spine defiance. Just as it has been since the 5th of Nov. and accelerating on Jan 20th to a full head of hate and unreasonableness. They have demonstrated that Americans best interest is the last thing on their minds such as they are
September 10th, 2009 at 1:53 pmThe death panel talking point is a two-fer. It’s a solid talking point that is impossible to refute in any meaningful way. All you can say is that it’s a lie; and then it’s just a “he says she says” situation where either could be right. It’s a brilliant strawman argument that address fear, uncertainty, and doubt in a way that is just beyond intellectual reason.
Then of course it conjures up the totalitarian government imagery that conservatives invested so heavily in with the current generation of seniors. Decades ago the notion that governments would put their unfit citizens to death in the interest of a perfect race or in the interest of saving money was commonplace. The up and coming generation of voters have not been exposed to any McCarthyism, in fact it is denounced. “Death panels” builds up fear of a cold government that would kill anyone who stands in its way of a perfect socialistic society for any reason.
So I don’t think this meme will die any time soon. We can probably expect it to exist until the day healthcare reform passes and throughout its implementation.
September 10th, 2009 at 1:55 pmI would think that a couple more GOP sens DID applaud. Lugar, in particular. The guy’s a class act; my guess is that the cameras never focused on him.
That said, I doubt he’d vote for the final bill…but you never know.
September 10th, 2009 at 1:57 pmBoo Hoo. The poor Repugs. Acting like defiant, spoiled children ready to stamp their feet when they hear something they don’t like. Even if it’s true. The fact is INSURANCE companies are the ones with ‘Death Panels’. But that’s OK with them. They will let average Americans die needlessly because they are beholden to Insurance Companies and a tired old idealogy that believes all ‘Government’ is a bad, evil entity that must be quashed at all costs. Ironic how they think Government is evil, yet they it doesn’t stop them from obtaining the power to run it at all costs.

Bob Bennett?
The conservative to the bone Utah Mormon?
I guess the question is did he applaud because he agrees with Obama or because Bennett’s parents taught him manners unlike the dogs that raised Joe Wilson.
September 10th, 2009 at 2:10 pmMy..my… I was wondering when the trolls would show up. By the way. I never mentioned how much money any politician received from insurance companies. In fact. I didn’t mention any particular politicain at all.

Reid
Look, it thinks Progressives like Harry Reid. That’s adorable.
September 10th, 2009 at 2:13 pmToo many Republics repeated the death panel lie to dare applaud its denunciation. As for the failure to applaud a pledge to protect citizens from medical bill bankruptcy, some are too lacking in empathy to care, some are too frightened of the far right to be seen supporting anything the scary black man says and some recognize that if Obama pulls this off and puts together a successful administration the Republic Party may not see power again for decades.

Did we miss all those Republicans applauding while we were drinking that Kool-Aid?
Or do you have nothing really to say except nonsense?
September 10th, 2009 at 2:23 pmKenneth says:
We don’t need Healthcare Reform!
Well, most of America disagrees with you, Kenneth… who’s been drinking what now?
September 10th, 2009 at 2:24 pmmr jones seems to qualify. ha
September 10th, 2009 at 2:25 pmIt will by the time the lobbyists water it dowm with subsidies.
September 10th, 2009 at 2:26 pmWe’re working on that, getting rid of one republican at a time……the work goes on.
September 10th, 2009 at 2:27 pmcorruption and fiscal responsibility reform. Good call Kenneth. That’s exactly what the President described lastnight on how much of his program will be paid for. Glad to hear you are on board with this.
September 10th, 2009 at 2:27 pm“No one should go broke because they get sick.” The Repugs couldn’t even be bothered to stand and clap for that?? Are they that callous? Yes, they are.
September 10th, 2009 at 2:28 pmNotice that republicans also did not applaud when obama made comments on upholding medicare and not cutting the program or trying to privatize it. Wish democrats would run with this and go after republicans for wanting to cut medicare. would be a great way to get more senior citizens on board.

Townhalls..pfft, that just manufactured opposition to make it seem much larger than it is by the very people that are causing a good part of the debt.
But hey, if you want to keep working against your own interests for a few food and drink vouchers, go ahead.
September 10th, 2009 at 2:32 pmNo Kenny, they don’t.
September 10th, 2009 at 2:33 pmwith a system (American Medical System) that is the best in the world.
September 10th, 2009 at 2:33 pm—
I suppose you can support this thesis?
Who says it’s one or the other?
I’d say we need BOTH health care reform AND fiscal responsibility reform in Congress. Although I gotta say, based on results, Democrats have a better record on fiscal responsibility than Republicans over the last, say, fifty years.
September 10th, 2009 at 2:34 pmBeen offered, Kenny.
catch up on the topic before jumping in with both your little cap-guns blazing, wouldja?
September 10th, 2009 at 2:34 pmWe are rated number 37. But I will say America leads in technical expertise what with the CAT scans etc etc. But regular health care doesnt require all that expensive equipment and thats why we get a rating of 37.
September 10th, 2009 at 2:35 pmNational polls say what Kenneth? Like these polls?
September 10th, 2009 at 2:35 pmHow about a little Tort reforms first before playing with a system (American Medical System) that is the best in the world.
Two problems:
1) Tort Reform has done nothing to address rising costs in Texas or Missouri. http://www.cleveland.com/nation/index.ssf/2009/09/would_tort_reform_make_much_di.html
2) We rank well below #1 in any reasonable analysis of Health Care systems…

September 10th, 2009 at 2:37 pmWho knew Kenneth the Intern was a right-winger?

September 10th, 2009 at 2:38 pmBest in the world?
Perhaps, Ken, but only if you can pay to play.
September 10th, 2009 at 2:39 pmWell of course, kenny.
Everything in “America” is the best in the world.
And if somebody has something better than us,
we’ll steal it, bomb it, or just deny that it exists.
Isn’t that how it works?
More kool-aid?
September 10th, 2009 at 2:39 pmWe do rank #1 in spending, Kenny… by a good bit.
So I can see how you could be confused.
September 10th, 2009 at 2:39 pmKoch [big oil chemical co] supports alot of these astroturf movements and is NOT small business, but one of the largest private businesses. Kock says he lobbys against subsidies but then says he profits off them greatly [on ethanol]
He also says he lobbys in his companies interests [IE not yours]
They are just using people for their gain IE false flag opposition.
September 10th, 2009 at 2:40 pmHow come all these self made small business owners usually end up out of business in short order?
September 10th, 2009 at 2:42 pmDid you know, Kenny, that the abolishment of alcohol [prohibition] grass roots movement was co-opted by lobbyists?
If it werent for them prohibition, which lead to a major increase in organized crime, would never have happened.

As a real, independent, small business guy, I can tell you that the 1 thing that would do me the most good would be for lots and lots of average people to have more $ in their pockets to spend. Cutting Donald Trump’s taxes didn’t do a damned thing to address that, and neither will anything else the R’s stand for.

September 10th, 2009 at 3:01 pm‘Just four GOP senators applaud when Obama calls ‘death panels’ a ‘lie.’”
The House of GOP cards are falling if only 4 GOP Senators applauded Obama for calling out the lie concerning death panels in the healthcare reform bill. Real sad.
Here some interesting news about Rep. Wilson. Hat tip Raw Story:
Whether because of his outspokenness or in spite of it, Wilson is a major recipient of contributions from the health care industry.
In fact, over his entire congressional career, health professionals represent Wilson’s top industry contributors, donating a total of $244,196 to his campaign, according to the Center for Responsive Politics OpenSecrets.org database.
He received another $86,150 from pharmaceutical companies, $73,050 from insurance companies and $68,000 from hospitals and nursing homes.

September 10th, 2009 at 3:02 pmYou know, its funny that thats what many religions want to do. Have everyone believe in their GOD, in their ways, think like them, act like them, dress like them. Quite a communal way of life. Yet these are they very first to accuse others of being socialist.
But, I guess the question is are we like one huge ant colony? I recall that in the bible that GOD destroyed the tower of Babel because the people all spoke one language and then made it to where they couldnt understand one another.
GOD then, wanted his children to be indivuals and independent of a hive mind mentality.
And, yanno, I know of GOD, but he doesnt want me like everyone else, nor do I want everyone like me.
GODs lesson, I think then, is this. You had better learn to get along whatever your differences are. A lesson humanity has yet to learn.
September 10th, 2009 at 3:02 pmLatest poll. 78% favor the Preisdent’s Healthcare Plan — 18% oppose the plan.

September 10th, 2009 at 3:04 pmKenneth: “More than likely some small businesses failed because of mis-management, mistakes, inexperience, or an overburden of government taxes and regulations. But, they rebounded because of the entrepreneurial spirit and freedoms this Country offers.”
And everyone lived happily ever after! That’s a beautiful, story, Ken.

September 10th, 2009 at 3:12 pmWhen the Dems taxed the crap out of Luxury boats in my state years ago it put hundreds of people out of work in the boat building business. i.e. Tax the Rich and put the common worker out of a job. Great Liberal policy!—-NOT!
September 10th, 2009 at 3:12 pmKenneth, you are proving to be a typical follower of fear. I’m guessing you stood right behind the Bush administration even after no WMD’s were found in Iraq. You were probably silent when a covert agent’s identity was released by the Bush administration. I’d venture to say you still believe that Sadam was secretly working with Al Qiada.
You followed the emperor with no clothes and can’t bring yourself to realize you were wrong so you keep digging that hole.

Put money in Donald Trumps pocket and buildings get built and workers get work. — Carpenters, plumbers, Electricians, brick-layers, cement contractors, etc, etc, etc. Then the average construction worker has money in his pocket to buy a beer and spend money on other things. Economics 101!

It came back and boomed after the boat tax was rescinded!
September 10th, 2009 at 3:18 pmAccording to David MacFarlane, president of Alden Yachts, Dockery’s order brought the company back from the brink of collapse. MacFarlane thinks back to November 1990, when President Bush and the Democratic majority in Congress agreed to levy the luxury tax. He says he still can’t believe they did it.
Yes, Kenneth, it was only the dems.

Send me all the graphs and websites you want. I was there in the trenches when the economy shifted for the POSITIVE in the 80s and watched it work in my industry and in other businesses and with other business friends. SO, don’t tell me reducing taxes doesn’t work.
September 10th, 2009 at 3:22 pmIt took a relentless grassroots lobbying campaign by the boat builders, but Congress finally did repeal the federal luxury tax on boats in August of 1993.
Gee, when did the republicans take the senate back?
1994
September 10th, 2009 at 3:23 pmReally? The recession began in dec 2007. And did you know how many jobs were crested after GWBs tax cuts of 1.5 trillion?
Only eight million in eight years.
But go ahead and ignore graphs and facts, you have obviusly decided that your alternate reality is truth and thus you dont need to be here debating things you dont want to debate.
September 10th, 2009 at 3:25 pmOlympic Boat Centers – a giant west coast boat dealer,
went out of business just last year. Bankrupt after decades in business.
Not because of their taxes, and not due to mismanagement, and not because they didn’t pray enough or dress professionally, either…
but because their sales dried up.
No businessperson in their right mind would give up a critical percent of their sales, to save a trivial amount in taxes.
That’s Real Life Business, 101.
September 10th, 2009 at 3:25 pmBut the boat tax wasnt until the 90s…your memory is off a decade,

That was followed by Rep. Maxine Waters telling him that the public now knows what they are having to deal with in the Republican side of Congress.

September 10th, 2009 at 3:42 pmokie, Reagan wasn’t president in 1990. That was George H.W. Bush. Unless he managed to get it done by remote control?
September 10th, 2009 at 3:43 pmOT (from Raw Story)
U.S. Capitol Police have arrested a Virginia man they say tried to get into a secure area near the Capitol with a gun in his car as the president gave his health care address to Congress.
Police spokeswoman Sgt. Kimberly Schneider said Thursday that 28-year-old Joshua Bowman of Falls Church, Va., was arrested around 8 p.m. Wednesday. Bowman’s intentions were unclear, police said.
September 10th, 2009 at 3:50 pmYou’re right, Purple State.
I know that. My search directed me to an interview with a car dealer named Regan…..
I’ve owned a small business for over 25 years, and remember the luxury tax enactment. But, for us business was much better under Clinton than either Bush or Bush Lite…
September 10th, 2009 at 3:51 pmExactly. My father’s business thrived in the 90s, but now it is struggling to stay afloat. That’s more due to the recession than anything, and recessions do not necessarily have a party affiliation affixed to them.
September 10th, 2009 at 3:55 pmNo luxury taxes levied in 2008 but RV manufacturers crashed and burned. Go figure.
September 10th, 2009 at 3:57 pmBush Jr.’s relentless taxes on small business, the diminishing amount of liquid income with inflation, and increasing overhead and fees….
September 10th, 2009 at 4:02 pmnot a good time for our health insurance premiums to double.
Even with the inevitable passage of the health reform package, it will be a long time before it is fully implemented. An interim program was noted last night for the urgently needy.
September 10th, 2009 at 4:15 pmThe repugs efforts to stymie or stall this package is pretty transparent — they anticipate having control of congress in the near future and they will bury any reform at that time.
89.
Anyone else find it hilarious…and pitiful…that rabid right-wingers and the assorted trolls on this site, “educated” is supposedly an insult?
September 10th, 2009 at 4:23 pmWell have you all notice that there seems to be only like two trolls per thread?
I mean we can really start to use only one name for all our misguided trolls you could use Kenny name in place with tundra or kvs or storm.
September 10th, 2009 at 4:43 pmpicture them all in the same basement pounding away(smiles insert thoughts) on there keyboards.
Troll Rationing!!??
Is that even Constitutional??
September 10th, 2009 at 4:51 pmI felt like kicking that imbecile in the neck. How dare he yell his racist slant on his bald-face lie. He had nothing to back up his claim, he’s an idiot and is right in line with the rest of the rude, uneducated teabaggers.
You get out now you liar. RESIGN and go study Robert’s Rules you teabagger.
Another thing you stupid tables.
Don’t go around looking more ignorant than you actually are by comparing this looney’s rudeness to our calling out chimpy on his lies. It’s not the same and I really believe you teabaggers don’t know the difference.
This is why the repugs will never be in the WH EVER again.
President Obama handled you like the rotten repug you are.
September 10th, 2009 at 5:07 pmOlympia Snowe and Susan Collins are RINOS so it doesn’t really matter.
September 10th, 2009 at 5:13 pmcg, I think it’s just the “R” part that doesn’t matter.

September 10th, 2009 at 5:24 pmWhy does the World Health Organization rank the US system 37 if we have the best in the world?

Tombaker,
What about when Reagan reduced the top tax rates and the economy turned around and the common folk had money to spend. I was there when it happened. Were you born yet?
Uhhhh….Voodoo Economics doesn’t work. Even George Bush Sr. was against it, and it certainly didn’t work for George Bush Jr. when he tried it during *his* presidency.
And I actually recall Reaganomics *not* working, since the recession lasted ALL throughout his presidency. The only thing that ended it was when Bush Sr. ordered Desert Shield and Desert Storm, because history *does* tell us that the one thing that’s almost certain to end a depression is unfortunately a war.
