Speaking At 9/12 Rally, FreedomWorks Lies, Inflates Attendance By Over 2,000 Percent

Last Saturday, FreedomWorks, a corporate-funded right-wing advocacy group headed by former Republican Majority Leader Dick Armey (R-TX), hosted an anti-Obama rally in Washington DC. The event was attended and paid for by various conservative organizations, from Parental Rights associations, to “birthers,” to the Rural Landowners, a militant faction that has referenced Waco and Ruby Ridge to call for violence against the government.

Standing proudly on-stage during the rally, FreedomWorks leader Matt Kibbe proclaimed that ABC News was reporting that 1 million to 1.5 million people were in attendance. However, ABC News quickly called Kibbe out for his lies:

At no time did ABC News, or its affiliates, report a number anywhere near as large. ABCNews.com reported an approximate figure of 60,000 to 70,000 protesters, attributed to the Washington, D.C., fire department. In its reports, ABC News Radio described the crowd as “tens of thousands.”

Kibbe also lied and said that the crowd stretched back to the Washington Monument, even though the crowd barely got past 3rd Street (the Washington Monument is at 15th Street). Kibbe’s lies were echoed by much of the right-wing community. Michelle Malkin dutifully enlarged the number of attendees even more, claiming 2,000,000 people were there. As Nate Silver has noted, “That’s not a twofold or threefold exaggeration — it’s roughly a thirtyfold exaggeration.” Conservatives on twitter distributed a fake picture of the rally showing the entire mall filled with people:

Fakerally

The problem? The picture is over ten years old, from another rally.

Update Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC), who now competes with Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) as the most popular South Carolina politician of the tea party crowd, took to the stage to endorse Kibbe's celebratory attitude. Even though polls have been showing public opinion swinging towards increased public approval for the President's health reforms, DeMint proclaimed victory in defeating health reform. As Politico reported, DeMint announced to the crowd, "Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Waterloo!" ThinkProgress recorded DeMint's statements at the rally. Watch it:

Update Here is video of Kibbe's bogus claim that the crowd stretches to the Washington Monument. Watch it:

    – - Ahem, Attendance.

  2. Badmoodman says:

Matt Kibbe proclaimed that ABC News was reporting that 1 million to 1.5 million people were in attendance

    – - Seeing as how ABC had gone on the record saying 60,000-70,000 people, you’d think Kibbe would have quoted FOX News. He’d have gotten some cover from them.

  15. misscoleopteramolly says:

Lemme get this straight. The wingnuts make advertisements against health care reform by tricking citizens of other countries into bad-mouthing their health systems or misrepresenting what they say about them.

They lie about the “grassroots” quality of their events.

And now they lie about how many people attend.

If their position is truly the correct one, why do they have to lie to sell their message?

  16. P.D. says:

Notice how MSM has dropped this story? MSM gives these people a platform. Which is totally underseved. Back in April, the Daily Show’s Jon Stewart offered some sound advice for frothing at the mouth Tea Baggers, “I think you might be confusing tyranny with losing.” Now five months after their Tax Day outburst, thousands of vein-popping Obama opponents descended Saturday on Washington for Tea Party II in an even larger display of confusion.

Here, then, are 10 Lessons for Tea Baggers:

    1. President Obama Cut Your Taxes
    2. The Stimulus is Working
    3. First Ronald Reagan Tripled the National Debt…
    4. …Then George W. Bush Doubled It Again
    5. Republican States Have the Worst Health Care
    6. Medicare is a Government Program
    7. Barack Obama is Not a Muslim
    8. Barack Obama was Born in the United States
    9. 70,000 Does Not Equal 2,000,000
    10. The Economy Almost Always Does Better Under Democrats

For the details and data behind each, see:

NPR has an article specifically on the question of whose numbers are accurate.

One item in the NPR piece mentions that there were actually two events going on at the same time, which may have given some people the idea that more people were participating in the rally than were there.

Nate Silver may be the most telling: If there had in fact been 2 million protesters in Washington yesterday, there would have been no need to lie about it — the magnitude of the protests would have been self-evident.

Uh, there also was something else going on at the Mall Saturday — the Black Family Celebration Reunion — so wondering how any accurate count could be generated —

There had to be 5 things going on. All I know is that there were so many people, I couldn’t do anything. I couldn’t park anywhere or get into anywhere. I couldn’t even get a slice of pizza. I just gave up and went home.

In fact, they left the place just like they found it. Somethings just not right here…..

And that, my friends is what’s known as making lemonade when life hands you a basket of lemons.

  125. politication says:

To Alejandro @117: What country are those pictures from? If you wanted us to think they were from the U.S., you should have only posted the second link. I assume you were trying to make some point about Bush having been compared to Hitler, whereas you just indicated that the whole world didn’t like Bush. But then we all knew that.

I just LOVE to laugh at morons as stupid and brainwashed as you are. Just put on the red rubber nose and size 18 shoes because you are a free clown show about 400,000 showed up and it was reported that about 400,000 showed up which was pretty good. Now the Anti War rally at Washington DC about 200,000 showed up and the liberal media called it tens of thousands. Do you even get how STUPID you are? Dont you realize that only the most brainwashed sheeple imaginable take the whole liberal media thing seriously? My GOD you are stupid

  146. sacomment says:

Biased blogs! Why do you refuse to accept the FACT that the American Citizens that were there to stand up for their Constitutional Rights disassembled the National Museum of the American Indian shortly before that photo was taken, and then reassembled it before they left at the end of the day? Hmmmm? You can’t explain that can you?

enough is enough! i’m tired of all the misinformation about the 9/12 attendance numbers. if a comprehensive university of indiana, peer reviewed, study isn’t good enough for you naysayers. and, if a highly regarded british media report is as equally dismissed. then, as a last resort i offer from the most highly recognized seekers of truth the undisputed, most accurate figure that is available. now i know you left-wingers are going to bash me for bringing out the truth, but i have only two words to say to you….bring it on!
