A new Public Policy Polling survey of New Jersey voters has some shocking results: 21 percent either believe or aren’t sure that President Obama is the Anti-Christ. Twenty-nine percent of Republicans and 35 percent of “conservative” voters also either believe he is or aren’t sure.

Not surprisingly, this meme has also been pushed by Fox News host Glenn Beck, who brought on controversial pastor John Hagee last year and asked, “There are people– they say this about Bill Clinton — he might be the Antichrist. Odds that Barack Obama is the Antichrist?”
Of course, they may be feigning madness to win our sympathy.
September 16th, 2009 at 4:15 pmIf you could have 5 minutes of “quality time” (you decide what this means) with any of the following, who would you pick?
September 16th, 2009 at 4:15 pmA Beck
B Limpball
C Bachmann
D Baucus
Is there no end to this madness? When it seems it can’t get any worse, they hit a new low.
September 16th, 2009 at 4:17 pmBye the way, I would have to go with Limpball because he thinks he’s a bad man!!!!
September 16th, 2009 at 4:17 pmRE: Texas Rick @ 2:

September 16th, 2009 at 4:20 pmI always thought it was supposed to be Ronald Wilson Reagan, you know, 6-6-6?
Now I’m confused.
September 16th, 2009 at 4:20 pmI still think GWB is Anti-Christ.
September 16th, 2009 at 4:21 pmWith Uncle Rubbi$h as his Anti-John the Baptist.
September 16th, 2009 at 4:21 pmThis is so stupid.
Everyone knows KKKarl Rove is the anti-christ.
Just ask Dick(Satan)Cheney.
September 16th, 2009 at 4:21 pmThese are Beck’s acolytes, who expected anything more of them?
September 16th, 2009 at 4:22 pmWow. That’s a lotta really stoopid people.

You mean the world’s gonna end again, the way it did in 2000!?
Just my luck.
September 16th, 2009 at 4:27 pmThirty-five percent of New Jersey conservative voters think Obama may be the Anti-Christ.
– - Yeah, but they also think Tony Soprano runs Joisey.
September 16th, 2009 at 4:28 pmThese people don’t need to worry about being sent to “re-education camps” because they’ve never been educated in the first place.

Anyone else see Linda McMahon (WWE) is going to run against Chris Dodd in CT for his senate seat?
She’s a republican (of course) – and she sure has enough money to win. What will the good people of CT do?
September 16th, 2009 at 4:29 pmSo, the Anti-Christ is supposedly to usher in a one-world government and an era of peace, particularly in the Middle East.
We could only hope that they were right in that regard.
But back here on Earth, in a little place I like to call “reality,” these people are retarded. And I’m sorry for using that word, I mean no disrespect to the mentally challenged. I mean loads of disrespect to these idiots, though.
@texasrick
September 16th, 2009 at 4:30 pmBachmann all the way. I’d tell her lots of scary stories of “socialism” that already exist in this country, greatly exaggerate the potential end result, and watch her panic. You know, simple stuff like tax-payer funded indoctrination camps for children starting as early as 4 years old where they brainwash kids with such pinko ideas like “sharing.”
Obviously, the anti-Christ would be a right winger. They’re the ones who advocate evil, particularly championing the behaviors that Jesus complained the most about – greed and war.
September 16th, 2009 at 4:30 pmDARN YOU DOGLESS LBURLS!
We’ve been outed!
2000 years of hard work down the drain!

September 16th, 2009 at 4:32 pmrachel had some really good comments on her show last night -
this first one relates to the general topic of “the crazy”…
the second one i posted on the baucus thread…
from transcript:
But first, it‘s time for a couple holy mackerel stories in today‘s news. While the 9/12 marchers were in D.C. this weekend, the president was in Minneapolis to give a speech about health reform.
And while the president spoke to the crowd inside the Target Center arena, outside was a man carrying two concealed guns, one on his hip under his shirt, the other in his back pocket.
His name is Josh Hendrickson and we interviewed him today. He told us that he was not outside the arena to protest, but he said, quote, “The Second Amendment isn‘t suspended just because the president‘s in town.”
In Minneapolis, a police officer spotted the outline of one of Mr. Hendrickson‘s weapons at the event and asked him to see his ID and his conceal-and-carry permit. Mr. Hendrickson provided both and he stayed at the president‘s event with both of his loaded weapons, not protesting.
A little later the secret service followed up with a similar chat. The Minnesota state representative who sponsored the state‘s conceal-and-carry law said that Mr. Hendrickson‘s actions were, quote, “silly.”
Also, they‘re now part of a pattern of people opposed to the president‘s policies bringing guns to his public appearances. Anyone with leadership cred with these folks maybe want to stand up and say this is a bad idea? Anyone?
No, seriously, anyone?
September 16th, 2009 at 4:33 pmI thought 35% of New Jersey residents were MAFIA members.
September 16th, 2009 at 4:34 pmPerhaps it’s something in the water supply that causes paranoia for these folks. New Jersey is just one big chemical dump and the water combined with stupidity and in-breeding pushes these folks over the edge. Pizza anyone? No questions about the ingredients.
September 16th, 2009 at 4:42 pm@15, pete says: These people don’t need to worry about being sent to “re-education camps” because they’ve never been educated in the first place. September 16th, 2009 at 4:28 pm
Well, almost, pete. While they haven’t been educated in the proper sense, the reThuglicans having done their damnedest to help destroy the public educations system, these people have spent way too much time in the wrong churches’ Sunday School, so they do need some serious de-programming.
@14, Badmoodman says: – – Yeah, but they also think Tony Soprano runs Joisey. September 16th, 2009 at 4:28 pm
Are you implying he doesn’t? oh no… I thought that was a documentary (megasnark)
@ 11. Leftside Annie says: Wow. That’s a lotta really stoopid people. September 16th, 2009 at 4:24 pm
Indeed it is, Annie; see my initial comment to pete.
I want to see more of the poll and some of the background and sampling criteria before insulting the entire state. I’d be surprised if there are actually that many people, percentage-wise, who are all jumped up about the anti-Christ.
OTOH, in my opinion, “Pastor” Hagee and some of his peers are surrogates for the anti-Christ. They’re certainly doing their damnedest to make life some sort of hellish theocratic dictatorship for everyone.
September 16th, 2009 at 4:43 pmThe idea that Obama is the Anti-Christ is ridiculous.
Everyone knows Barack Obama is Muhammeds flying white horse who Muhammed will ride again at the end of days. Thats why Obama held his acceptance speech at Invesco Field Mile High Stadium home of Denver Broncos whose mascot is Miles the white horse! See? It all makes much more sense!
http://todayperhaps.com/2009/07/28/mohammeds-flying-white-horse/
September 16th, 2009 at 4:44 pmNew Jersey isn’t that bad. My guess that there is a solid bunch of idiots anywhere who will vote negatively on anything Obama. It makes them feel powerful, instead of the pathetic things they are.
September 16th, 2009 at 4:44 pmAnyone who asks the quesiton if he is Anti…sorry I just can’t type that. I think asking the question qualifies for consideration. Answering yes definitely qualifies.
September 16th, 2009 at 4:44 pmWeird. I’m from Jersey and most of the conservatives we get are hardcore anti-tax Paulites…not religious zealots.
Ah well.
September 16th, 2009 at 4:46 pmI’d like to point out that counting “don’t know” responses as evidence of anything is very bad research; the question does not include a “refused to answer” option. Therefore, that total includes anybody who didn’t want to answer the question for any reason, such as those who just thought it’s a stupid question and wanted to move on.
September 16th, 2009 at 4:47 pmIf anyone is the anti-Christ, it’s Beck. He bears false witness (lies), promotes hatred, attacks others` with malicious & dishonest smears, does not promote love & caring (except maybe for his sister, as revealed in that incest fantasy of his),incites violence towards others, demeans his own listeners by calling them “idiots”, & lines his pockets on the misfortune of others & his daily lies & racist hysterics. Everything Jesus was for, Beck is against. Insn’t that what “anti” means?
September 16th, 2009 at 4:49 pmHOLY FKING COW! I wonder if I click my magic slippers if I will awake from this nightmare.
September 16th, 2009 at 4:50 pmSomebody left the door to the insane asylum open. The whackos have escaped are taking over the GOP.
September 16th, 2009 at 4:50 pmI thought Jesus was going to take care of this anti-Christ fella Personally.
These Rapture ready teabaggers better be careful that Nothing happens to Obama.
No Antichrist= no end of times= no rapture= no escaping this world on the cheap= better take care of it then.
September 16th, 2009 at 4:50 pmA whole lot of the “don’t know” answers might have been from people who, if offered the option, might have chosen “there’s no such thing.”
September 16th, 2009 at 4:51 pmIt’s a sad sign that 35% of people even believe in an Anti-Christ. Or Christ.
Silly theists.
September 16th, 2009 at 4:51 pmNo wonder I ignore every 1 out of 5 of the people here…….
September 16th, 2009 at 4:52 pmWell, here’s a little entertainment; further information on the poll from the WaInd link;
“- Twelve percent of McCain voters think Obama is the Anti-Christ. Twenty-one percent are not sure.
“- Fourteen percent of Republicans think Obama is the Anti-Christ. Fifteen percent are not sure.
“- Eighteen percent of “conservative” voters think Obama is the Anti-Christ. Seventeen percent are not sure.
“The big surprise here–the group of voters most likely to think Obama is the Anti-Christ are … Hispanics, who solidly backed Obama in 2008. Only 58 percent of them say, for sure, that their president is not Satan come to wreak havoc here on earth.”
September 16th, 2009 at 4:53 pmIt’s easy to write these people off as incomprehensibly stupid. But, that would be missing the point.
Yes. They are stupid. But their brand of stupid is also angry, armed and exceedingly dangerous.
Backed by extreme Christian-right zealotry and the hideous designs of Beck, Rush, Murdoch and Clear Channel these people are uniting for something different. They want to “win”. What ever that means to them. Mostly, it means they hate and they want to make it safe, even acceptable for them to hate.
Folks, the GOP in Washington and its rabid, racist followers are very clearly demonstrating that they’re no longer want to participate in our democratic processes as the current minority party.
They are the party of NO becoming instead a “movement” and that spells trouble for us all. Failure by the rest of us to realize and deal with that is our failing.
September 16th, 2009 at 4:53 pmYou mean only 35% of conservatives in New Jersey are batsh!t crazy? That’s not bad. I’m sure the number is far higher in places like Texas, South Carolina, Alaska, Idaho, ect.
September 16th, 2009 at 4:54 pmBachman is way too scary. I wouldn’t go near her. I would take Limbaugh, because Beck is going off himself pretty soon.

September 16th, 2009 at 5:11 pmThere is something very wrong with a poll that would ask a question that was that stupid.
September 16th, 2009 at 5:12 pmWith an overwhelming majority, a Democratic President was elected and both houses of Congress are in Democratic hands, Why oh why do these people and these views get a platform?
All this bipartisan nonsense with the healthcare debate, the teabaggers, birthers etc. I just don’t get it.
And, to be honest, watching Keith and Rachel is getting to be the “FOX said this and Glenn Beck said that” shows.
The corporate media wants us divided and at each others throats. It takes away from the fact that our entire political system has been bought and paid for by the rich and powerful.
I’m so tired.
September 16th, 2009 at 5:14 pmHad a look at some of the cross-tabulated date on the survey and it’s interesting – well, it is if you’re a hapless quant and gearhead. Anyway, here’s the location of the public data.
http://www.publicpolicypolling.com/pdf/PPP_Release_NJ_916.pdf
I haven’t checked the credibility of the poll. It isn’t exactly random, so there may be some selection bias, and the sample size is 500. There may be some other information on the sample that would make it more or less interesting, but that’s not something I’m going to chase at the moment.
September 16th, 2009 at 5:18 pmThe same 35% thought Michael Jackson was the Messiah.

___________
42% of people ages 18-29 think our President may be the Anti-Christ. Far higher than any other age group. That’s gotta be some sort of sampling bias…
September 16th, 2009 at 5:27 pm1 out of 4 people think the other 3 are idiots.
September 16th, 2009 at 5:28 pm@ 44, shoeless asks: Does the Bible say that the anti-Christ will be born in Kenya? September 16th, 2009 at 5:11 pm
Of course it does. Haven’t you been watching the Reverend Dumbfrack’s Bible Exigesis Pick’n'Choose Hour as you were instructed? (gigasnark)
Actually, the anti-Christ business comes primarily out of the Book of Revelation. The scholarly (academic) “higher criticism”, which has applied linguistics and philological techniques to the Bible, including some of the earlier texts as available, asserts that the entire book was a jeremiad written against the Romans, with references to Babylon being blasts against Rome, the Anti-Christ being either the Emperor himself or his representative, the pro-consul, in Judea, etc, etc. That is, Revelation started out as an anti-Roman propaganda piece that could be bootlegged around the Empire to Christian and Messianistic Jewish groups, with the message ‘hidden’ as an anti-Babylonian preachment. If it had been written explicitly against Rome and the Emperor and a carrier of the screed was caught, well, some of the Romans had no particular qualms about crucifying rebels and insurrectionists, and a lot of the others knew of nice dank dungeons where dissenters could be put up for a few years.
September 16th, 2009 at 5:32 pm95 % of NY Giants fans think Michael Vick is the anti-Christ.
Soon He will decent on Giants stadium scoring many touchdowns whilst simultaneously causing all of the stadium toilets to overflow giving douchbag Giant fans no place to hide from the scoring.
September 16th, 2009 at 5:36 pmAre they talking about that person that sometimes quotes here under the handle “The Antichrist”?
That can’t be the potus.

September 16th, 2009 at 5:40 pmpete I suspect that despitelarge numbers of goofballs in this country these data are somewhat the result of the offense people took to such an asinine question. September 16th, 2009 at 5:45 pmWell NJ is a microcosm of the nation. This means that 35% of the people in the US are just about as stupid as they come. The Bible speaks of deceivers being aligned with Satin. The Repuglicans are being the deceivers, lying left and right. These poor schmuks are being taken in but their palaver hook line and sinker. I feel sorry for them since they have aligned with the beast and will go to hell for it.
September 16th, 2009 at 5:45 pmHuh. So for the anti-christ to be here doesnt that mean that Christ must also be here and that Armegeddon already happened?
September 16th, 2009 at 5:46 pmAnd, lol, I didnt see any fundamentalists float off into heaven…weird.
September 16th, 2009 at 5:47 pmThe more of this insanity I see, the more convinced I am that the Mayan Calendar, which I believe predicts the end of the world around 2012 with precedeing calamities, may be right.
September 16th, 2009 at 5:50 pmWill the repugs actually start the battle of Armegeddon in New Jersey?
September 16th, 2009 at 5:52 pmWhile we are on the subject of polls; here’s a report on a poll with more positive results. According to this poll most people are able to see through the batscat from the Reichwing. Perhaps we are, collectively, less stupid than we fear?

September 16th, 2009 at 5:58 pmThese people are not only stupid, but they’re even stupid on their own terms. If any of them would take the time to read the little yarns upon which all this “end times” hokum is based, they might discover that the “anti-Christ” isn’t supposed to show up until after the “rapture.” When you wake up one morning and find a bunch of free jewelry and clothes laying around in the street and at the office and every born-again Christian you know has disappeared, THEN you can start looking for the “anti-Christ”, but not until then. Read your own book, you lazy morons.

Having said that, I’m more bummed to learn there are people who actually take it seriously. Dang.

September 17th, 2009 at 12:43 amI have a funny story about this.
When I was canvassing during the primaries in a white suburb of Philadelphia for Obama, I was exhausted, and had had many doors slammed in my face.
This very nice woman invited me into her house and gave me tea and cookies. I asked her who she was planning to vote for, and she told me she wasn’t sure.
She really liked Obama, but she was afraid he might be the Anti-Christ, because he was Muslim, in his 40’s, adulated, etc. In the end, she decided to vote for him, because she really like him and his policies, and if he was the Anti-Christ, she figured there was nothing she could do to stop him, so she might as well take the risk!
She was the nicest wacko I’ve ever met!
September 17th, 2009 at 1:25 amHey, I live in New Jersey- these people must live in the Vinelands where everyone are cousins.
September 17th, 2009 at 8:51 amThe earliest Christians believed Nero to be the “anti-christ”. So who ya’ gonna’ trust- folks who were one generation removed from Jesus or today’s full mooners?
September 17th, 2009 at 9:42 amThis is nothing but hype. No listing of how many people were polled, what demographic they came from, how many demographics were used. Also, a very low number actually believe President Obama is the anti-Christ.
No Conservative Christian who knows and believes the Bible believes that President Obama is the anti-Christ, being defined as the “Beast” in the book of the Revelation. These prophecies are way too specific to be able to make such a claim against the President.
Do not get me wrong. I disagree with his socialist policies greatly. There are some who will call anyone they disagree with the anti-Christ, but there are also some who will hype such to make Conservative Christians look like fools, even though incorrect facts are used.
The most that can be said from the stats stated in this poll is that there are some (a very few) who belive that the President is the anti-Christ, a few more are unsure, and the majority say he is not.
This politically motivated poll is not a scientific poll, and the editorial comments are bogus.
