Former President Jimmy Carter stirred a media-frenzy this week when he said in an interview with NBC News that much of the most strenuous opposition to President Obama stems from the color of his skin. “I think an overwhelming portion of the intensely demonstrated animosity toward President Barack Obama is based on the fact that he is a black man, that he’s African-American,” he said.
RNC Chairman Michael Steele has since been all over the airwaves complaining, calling Carter’s comments “out of line.” And in an op-ed in Politico today, Steele argued that there is no racism whatsoever in opposition to Obama:
Proud Americans, black and white, fought for too long and too hard to have the claim of racism be used in such a cavalier fashion. Blind charges of racism, where none exist, not only are an affront to those who have suffered the effects of racism, but it weakens our efforts to address true acts of racism and makes them more difficult to overcome.
Yet this morning on CBS, host Maggie Rodriguez got Steele to admit that some right-wing opposition is racially-charged:
RODRIGUEZ: I wanted to make time to ask you about these allegations on behalf of former President Carter and others that all of this criticism towards President Obama is motivated by racism. … When we have protests like we saw in Washington last week, when we see Confederate flags and pictures of the president in white face and signs that say he needs to go back to Africa, can you afford to ignore that?
STEELE: No you don’t ignore it but you don’t paint such a broad brush with it.
Watch it:
Yesterday on Fox News, Steele criticized Carter and other Democrats for playing the race card. “We cannot go to a point in this country,” he said, “if every time we find ourselves in disagreement with [Obama], his sycophants and others out there are running to his side and rushing in with charges of racism.”
Yet earlier on CNN, Steele accused Democrats in Congress who represent African-American sections of the country of being racist:
STEELE: You know, I’m looking at cities around the country where black folk live. Now, you showed me the Congress with all these wonderful black Democrats and white Democrats. But I go to black neighborhoods that are run by those same Democrats. And you tell me where racism really exists.
This isn’t the first time Steele has played the race card. Hosting a radio show in May, Steele said the media didn’t vet Obama during the 2008 presidential campaign because they “fell in love with the black man running for the office.”
Apparently Steele himself has no problem playing the race card when it suits his interests.
NOBODY wins when somebody–ANYBODY–plays the race card.
The Republicans don’t have a SINGLE AFRICAN AMERICAN in elected office at the Federal level. There’s a damn good reason for that.
They don’t WANT any.

September 17th, 2009 at 12:42 pmUm… it probably exists where the victims of racism live.
I mean, how many racial tensions are you gonna have when your gated community is 100& white? Apparently Steele thinks that proves that white folks aren’t racist.
September 17th, 2009 at 12:43 pmwhat’s an uncle tom going to do?
September 17th, 2009 at 12:46 pmUh-oh! A whole new thread for the right-whiners to hijack!

Hypocrisy in action:
Statement #1 – STEELE: No you don’t ignore it (racism) but you don’t paint such a broad brush with it.
Statement #2 – STEELE: You know, I’m looking at cities around the country where black folk live. Now, you showed me the Congress with all these wonderful black Democrats and white Democrats. But I go to black neighborhoods that are run by those same Democrats. And you tell me where racism really exists.
So, I guess Steele DOES paint such a broad brush with racism. Go figure.
September 17th, 2009 at 12:48 pmPlaying the race card? You mean like Rush played “Barack, the Magic Negro”? Or is “In Obama’s America, black kids can beat up white kids”? Or Beck saying plainly that Obama is a racist who has a problem with the white culture? Or the Obama/Kenyan connection? Or the monkey pictures? Witch doctor photos? Or the postcards with the watermelons on the White House lawn.
September 17th, 2009 at 12:50 pmThis BS has got to stop…
I mean, how many racial tensions are you gonna have when your gated community is 100& white?
You trying being the only Methodist family in a neighborhood of Congregationalist and you see how you like it!

September 17th, 2009 at 12:50 pmI wonder if Steele makes any sense to Steele. Nobody else knows what he’s talking about.
September 17th, 2009 at 12:50 pmNotice when ever this kind of thing comes up, they trot out Steele? They are USING him. When Steele was elected, a lot of members grumbled. It was between him and a known bigot. At first a lot of memebers wanted him out. Especially since he embarasses himself on a daily basis. But he comes in handy at times like this. I can hear the Repugs say, “Better bring out the black guy.” I would have to much pride to be used in this fashion.
September 17th, 2009 at 12:53 pmI wonder what Steele’s explanation is for the fact that nobody in the party he’s supposed to be running will follow his lead, and they even tried to strip his powers as soon as he got the job.
.
Democrat Soldier says:
So, I guess Steele DOES paint such a broad brush with racism. Go figure.
That brush is much broader than Carter’s. Carter only referred to “an overwhelming portion of the intensely demonstrated animosity toward President Barack Obama.” He wasn’t referring to legitimate political disagreement at all.
September 17th, 2009 at 12:53 pmHe doesn’t have to make ANY sense to be the leader of the GOP because they hear what they want to hear and believe what they want to believe…still they have faux news to vent their rantings…

“we’ll appoint Gee Dubya Bush to prove we don’t discriminate against the retarded (and then we’ll use his retardation to manipulate him into letting us raid the treasury)”

Which is hilarious, because “wartime Presidential powers” and “unitary executive theory,” both of which they put forward during the Bush administration, constitute advocating fascism quite explicitly.

Exactly. They’re complaining that we’re unfairly bigoted against racist bigots.

shoe@36, LOL1 You’re right! The stupider you are, the more likely you are a Repug!
September 17th, 2009 at 1:35 pmHow ignorant do the repugs have to be as to accuse a man who was borne from his white mother and raised by his white grandparents when his mother died? Does that concept escape you teabaggers? What did y’all conclude? Did President Obama piss you off, because he trumped your racism? Irrational as hell.
The world is better because President Obama was raised in a loving family and not by teabaggers. In Kansas no less.
teabaggers can’t figure this out. It’s funny as hell because it’s so weird.
September 17th, 2009 at 1:37 pmMichael Steele doesn’t understand the difference between bigotry and racism. Per a comment of mine on the Lumpy Pudge Limpdiddler thread, if he understood that the nut of racism is that it is bigotry expressed by the dominant ethnic community in it’s political and social stucture, then he’d understand why bigotry in the black community is NOT racism and bigotry in the white community is. But Michael “Waldo” Steele (where’s Waldo this week? he’s been all over the political map, as usual and where’d he come to rest?) doesn’t have to worry. If his worst fears are realized and Marster loses his grip on power and majority status, all Waldo has to do is turn his coat and say, “I was working for you guys all the time. Inside man and all that, ya know?”
Some such silly arse thing seems to be his take on it. Play both sides of the fence. Never mind that most anyone with sense wants to dismantle that fence and they’re getting resistance from the very folks Waldo is supporting.
September 17th, 2009 at 1:38 pmmax, I think he means Progressives, well-known for being accurate, would be backwards if they called right wingers accurate
just as Steele is backwards, being a racist himself, by claiming that progressives are racist

September 17th, 2009 at 1:47 pmagainst the advice of his aids.
In 1965, Carter was the only one stand up in favor of admission
of blacks to his church.
I’m sure Nobel Peace Prize recipient Jimmy Carter of Georgia has no problem recognizing the “brushstrokes” of racism.
Of course, I get (and agree) that Steele (who I have little to no respect for) tried to play the Texas 2-step and say he was doing one thing while doing another.
But there is one thing I haven’t heard in the assaults on President Carter. I haven’t heard anyone offer an alternate explanation for the level of vitriol against President Obama.
One thing I have not understood has been the inflamed passion against Obama / Healthcare Reform / etc. People go to town halls and are broken down to tears under the impression that if there is a healthcare reform that America will cease to exist (or as many cried, the America I know has disappeared in the last 6 months). It isn’t just a political disagreement or thought that things are bad. It is something that seems to tear to the center of their soul.
So what would explain it ? Not that Obama is a dem (even W. Clinton didn’t get this level of vitriol; I couldn’t see H. Clinton getting this even though the repubs have had 12 years to learn to villify the name).

September 17th, 2009 at 2:03 pm@ 48, Old Uncle Dave says: o/t – Racism and facism should rhyme. September 17th, 2009 at 1:58 pm
Maybe it would if it weren’t fascism, rather than facism; fascism derives from the Roman or Latin fasces, which literally means bundle, and is depicted as a bundle of wood sticks or rods with an ax-head protruding from one side. See;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fasces
September 17th, 2009 at 2:18 pmThe Republicans don’t have a SINGLE AFRICAN AMERICAN in elected office at the Federal level. There’s a damn good reason for that.
White supremacists hate nothing more than an “uppity negro”.
They’re so used to “keeping him in his place” that the mere thought of an African American as POTUS makes their blood boil.
These idiots should soon discover why their ilk used to wear white hoods and robes.
September 17th, 2009 at 2:20 pm@ 52. More OT. “face-ism” might rhyme, but that’s just a sub-bigotry of ‘lookism’ according to the politically correct crowd. Fakism doesn’t quite cut it without the syllibant preceding the -ism part, does it?
September 17th, 2009 at 2:22 pm@ 43. To clarify a bit for the trolls and Lumpy, bigotry becomes racism not simply when it’s present in the dominant or majority community, but when it becomes the public policy, de jure or de facto, of that dominant group. Bigotry becomes racism when it’s spread enough through a dominant group in a culture that it is a coherent force in law or social norms, or when it’s going that way. Working to revive racism is, ipso facto, an expression of bigotry and racism.
September 17th, 2009 at 2:36 pm@ 55. Oops. That’s for the trolls and Waldo, not Lumpy Limpdiddler, although Lumpy could use a little knowledge too. Enforced by the steel ruler rap on the knuckles method.
September 17th, 2009 at 2:38 pmI have often wanted to “play the race card” but I have no cards! This has always put me at a great disadvantage when the game starts. Because of my color and looks I’m told…NO CARDS FOR YOU!
September 17th, 2009 at 2:49 pm#47 I think most of the inflamed passion comes from fear. Of course there are racists who will hate the President regardless of what he does. But remember, this is an unusual recession in that it’s hit older, higher paid workers harder than the young. Many of these people saw their life’s savings implode last year. Now if they’re not out of a job, they’re either worried about losing their job, having to take a pay-cut or being forced to take unpaid leave. Their plans of an early/comfortable retirement are gone.
Then a massive health care bill is proposed that no one understands. This allows groups that are opposed to it to cherry-pick/infer points (i.e. some of it will be paid for by cutting back on Medicare expenditures, illegal aliens will have full coverage, etc.) and spin them to make it seem as though the middle class and elderly are going to get whacked again.
Then along comes the town hall meetings and all of this pent up frustration comes boiling out…
September 17th, 2009 at 2:53 pmOf course it’s not racist!
September 17th, 2009 at 3:01 pmTake it from me, Michael Steele is an UNCLE TOM! I’m a black man and I know an Uncle Tom when I see one. He is standing on the shoulders and graves of a lot of great black men, but he thinks that he has to kiss ass by acting as if racism doesn’t exist to get anywhere in life. I’ve got news Michael, you don’t have to act like a “house slave” to please anyone, if you’ve got talent it should carry you through life just fine. People like you make my stomach turn when I see you “stepin and fetchin” like uncle Reamis, saying “Yesss Surrrr Bosssss.
September 17th, 2009 at 3:18 pmMost racists that I’ve run across in my life are so oblivious that they cannot understand why they are racist.
And then there’s the extreme zealots who know they are racist but defend the racism because black people (or brown, or yellow, or red….) were not created by Gawd but are descendants of Cain.
I was “discussing” evolution with a fundamentalist who asked me quite smugly, “Well, if you think evolution really happened, tell me this. Where do black people come from?”
And this dipshit was serious as a heart attack.
Sad but true. These dumbfcks exist, they vote and they throw teabag parties.
September 17th, 2009 at 3:30 pmLet me ask everyone one this site a question. How many blacks elected Republicans are there in Washington? That’s right: ZERO! NADA! NONE! Then ask yourself why. Is it because there is no racism in America? Or is it because blacks Republicans haven’t ran for elective office. Answer: Yes they have, but the same people the stand up for and claim aren’t racist, won’t vote for them. I wonder why?

September 17th, 2009 at 4:48 pmMr Steele shold spend more of his time recruiting African American Candidates to the GOP.
September 17th, 2009 at 4:48 pmCurrently there are no black Congressmen,Senators or Governors in the GOP.
It is harder to pander to bigots when there are more minorities in the room.
If Republicans resent being called racists, they need to police their own.
Regardless of how prevalent racist signs and sentiment are at rallies, the examples are there.
What we don’t see, is any indication of conservatives or republicans confronting the racists.
Why?
Either the other attendees share the racist views or they ignore the racism, because the two share a common foe. President Obama.
They either share the racist views or condone the views because it’s politically expedient.
Either way, it’s unacceptable.
My mind has been changed on this. If those who protest the administration, refuse to confront the examples of overt racism at the rallies, it’s tantamount to condoning the racist sentiment.
And worthy of the implications of racism.
September 17th, 2009 at 5:02 pmAlthough Mr. Steele admires Stepin’ Fetchit, he insists his resemblance to him is strictly coincidental.

September 17th, 2009 at 5:56 pmnanlichi. It’s taken me a while to get there, but it doesn’t really matter why they aren’t doing it.
It’s unacceptable for conservatives or republicans to tolerate the racists that gravitate to their rallies.
By ignoring the racists (or enabling them), they cede legitimacy to the charges of racism leveled against them as a whole.
September 17th, 2009 at 6:04 pm@ 66. conservative guy says: Poor old Jimmy Cater brings up the race card. It seems funny coming from a Jew hater.
September 17th, 2009 at 4:45 pm
Really? Would you care to support that argument, Mr. Confederate Flag on RELs B’day?
Jimmy Carter isn’t a hater, but he does see fairly clearly where the government of Israel is taking its people and the Palestinians. The G. of Israel has an opportunity to do the right thing, and has had for over 40 years (which seems Biblical enough to me) and they haven’t done it and don’t seem to have any inclination to do the right thing.
They’ve had a lot of time to work toward self-governance and self-determination for the Palestinians. They were dragged kicking and screaming every inch of the way that they’ve come so far, which is a pretty damned minimal distance compared to where they could have been had they made a good faith effort at the outset. Which they have not. There have been some good faith efforts, but they were derailed by people like Sharon and Netanyahu. And don’t get me started on Israel’s religious factions; a pack of witless armed provocateurs.
September 17th, 2009 at 6:58 pmOf course it matters.
Unless you think people’s motivations are irrelevant in understanding their behavior.
My opinion? I think they just recognize how powerful are the emotions that drive a substantial portion of their base, and they don’t want to f uck with that. I think they’re short-sighted, but c’mon, when isn’t the G-NO-P short-sighted? For evidence just check out their most recent trick, invading foreign lands and borrowing the money to do it.

Say what? Who is it we’re supposed to be defending? Michael Steele, who seems to want it both ways? That’s the topic, ya know. Steele wants to call Jimmy Carter out because of the racism charge, but admits that there may be some racism in the anti-Obama movement. Granted, he says the charge is overdrawn, too broad, which may or may not be the case.
I don’t think that dragging the OJ deal into this is helpful, even as an analogy, unless you think that Michael Steele is a murderer.
I also don’t think anyone rational would deny that there is racism in some of the opposition to President Obama. Our great nation still has an ample supply of race bigots and zealots who are more than willing to do anything to thwart either President Obama himself or any policy initiative his administration might take on. Even if he were a “white” Democrat, he’d be drawing fire from the conservatives and Republicans on what he’s already done or proposed, and the fact that he isn’t Almighty Whitey just predisposes some people to be even worse or greater in the viciousness of their behavior. What else is new?
What is your problem, baker56? Can you state it a little more clearly, or are you just here to express an opinion that would get you applause elsewhere?
