ThinkProgress Interviews O’Reilly Hit Man Jesse Watters

Members of ThinkProgress attended the Values Voters Summit in Washington, DC today. While we were there, we happened to see Fox News producer Jesse Watters and decided to try to interview him about why he stalked and ambushed ThinkProgress Managing Editor Amanda Terkel in March while she was on vacation in rural Virginia.

At first, Watters tried to walk away from us, but we were able to chat with him as he waited for the elevator. When we said we were from ThinkProgress.org, he replied, “I don’t know that organization.” But as soon as we mentioned the ambush of Amanda, he turned to his cameraman and said, “Oh, shoot this. Shoot this. Shoot this.”

We pointed out to Watters that O’Reilly has said he always contacts people to give them a chance to respond before ambushing them. Watters attempted to stall several times before answering the question, but eventually responded:

WATTERS: We called her office.

Q: She said she got no call.

WATTERS: Yeah, no — I called her office twice.

Q: Who in the office did you call?

WATTERS: I called the main number.

Q: The main number?

WATTERS: Yeah, I called the main number and asked if Amanda Terkel was there.

Watters then began to say that he contacted Amanda Terkel “before we went after –” but stopped himself before finishing the sentence and instead said, “Yeah, before we went there.”

Watters is lying, just like he did when he claimed he contacted Hendrick Hertzberg before accosting him in New York City. No one at the Center for American Progress ever received a call from Jesse Watters or anyone else at Fox News about having Amanda appear on the show. (Of course, O’Reilly’s producers had no trouble finding CAP’s media booker a few days later when they then wanted John Podesta to appear on the show.)

Watters also tried to play off staking out Amanda’s apartment, following her on vacation, and ambushing her on the street as a friendly interview. “Amanda Terkel is a very nice person, and she sat down with me, and we did an interview. She was very gracious to take my questions and I really appreciate that. … Tell her I said hello.” He then looked into the camera and said, “Hey Amanda, how are you doing?” (As we pointed out to him, Amanda never “sat down” with Watters; she had to stop on the street while on vacation and talk to Watters because he and his cameraman had followed her for two hours.)

As Watters walked away from us into the elevator, we asked Watters why he refused to comment to the New York Times about his ambush tactics. “I didn’t refuse to comment to the New York Times,” he replied. “Don’t believe everything you read in the New York Times.” Watch it:

Update New York Times reporter Brian Stelter, who wrote the story on Watters' ambush tactics, responds on Twitter: "I called Mr. Watters repeatedly at his office #, and he referred my calls to Fox's PR people. He refused to comment."
Update Watters posted the interview from the Fox News point of view on the Fox Nation.

“ThinkProgress Interviews O’Reilly Hit Man Jesse Watters”

I see the word “BS” planted on Watters’ forehead. Pretty low and disgusting to stalk and ambush ThinkProgress Managing Editor Amanda Terkel on vacation. But, then again Fox News is low and disgusting that will scrape to the bottom for some dirt news. But, it was a smart move by Thinkprogress to corner BillO’s stooge in a corner that made him sound like a village idiot. Gave him a dose of his own medicine. I had to laugh when the stooge Watters said that he didn’t know Thinkprogress yet the woman that he stalked happens to work for the organization that he can’t seem to recall.

    Stay classy, Jesse.

  21. WillowOrchid says:

I daresay Watters thinks he is a bona fide HE MAN 60 Minutes type investigative reporter. The fact that he does not research his “stories” ahead of time, or request an interview with the Subject ahead of time, or even ask sensible questions in his ambush-interviews, well- he obviously has rationalized his behavior internally, but knows it won’t convince anyone but himself.

  22. tokin librul says:

    Dear Jesse Watters,
Here’s some “REAL” journalism. Pay close attention.

Bill Moyers: Tea Party Organizer Is Epitome Of Privilege
    (VIDEO at link)

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/09/18/bill-moyers-tea-party-org_n_291625.html

This exclusive clip is from the latest episode of “Bill Moyers Journal,” which airs tonight. In the episode, Moyers goes after FreedomWorks Chairman Dick Armey — one of the key figures using large industry donations to fund “Tea Party” rallies around the country, such as the the 9/12 march in Washington DC last week.

“Here’s the catch,” Moyers says after showing video clips with protesters decrying “the lies” coming from the Obama administration. “Something these marchers who came to Washington at Armey’s urging could hardly be expected to know. For most of his adult life, their leader has benefited from just the kind of government tax-supported health care he’s fighting to keep them from having too.”

It’s a fascinating run down of Armey’s adult life working in universities and for the government, made comfortable and secure by state-funded health care — “the Cadillac of coverage.” A privilege, Moyers reveals, Armey sued to keep rather than switching over to Medicare after he retired.

“Dick Armey is the epitome of those people with power and privilege who are insured against the vicissitudes of life and want no government assistance for any suffering except their own,” Moyers says.

    WOW! Just WOW!
Hard hitting, factual, insightful and eye opening.

Exactly! I wish some rich liberal would do us a favour and give Murdoch a run for his money. There has to be one out there.

  32. Max Anax junius -1 says:

    .

Speaking of people who like to voice their values at summits…

Play the ball where the monkey throws it
    http://www.salon.com/politics/war_room/2009/09/18/monkeys/

Former House Republican whip Roy Blunt was a featured speaker Friday afternoon at the Values Voter Summit, and he had a little parable to share with the crowd.

Almost from the day the first ball was hit on this golf course something happened they didn’t anticipate: monkeys would come running out of the jungle and then grab the golf balls. And if it was in the fairway, they might throw it in the rough. And if it was in the rough, they might throw it — they might throw it back at you! And I can point to great and long detail about how many things they tried to eliminate the monkey problem, but they never got it done.

So finally for this golf course and this golf course only, they passed a rule and the rule was, you have to play the ball where the monkey throws it. And that is the rule in Washington all the time.

Yes, you read that right: the point of the story was that like British golfers, conservatives in Washington have to play the ball where the monkey throws it.
    (continued)

Now, of course it’s not (R)acist when Roy Blunt does it. YES?

Lets see, the only time Jesus lost his temper was over the money changers in the temple who were trying to profit from people wanting to worship.

Then there is all of things about loving thy neighbor, helping others. You know, I don’t think there is one word in the New Testament that says, go out and make money. And the only references in the New Testament about making money is that it isn’t something to worry about.

    Care to try again?

We can care for the sick, give them more financial capital, allow companies to create a profit, and allow tax revenues to increase to decrease our debt

I’ve been trying real hard to figure out what this means. As best I can tell, we can care for the sick. That’s a great idea, that’s what we want to accomplish with health reform. “give them more financial capial”…Hmmm, while I applaud your desire to literally give the sick money, I’m not sure we can afford that. How about if we just make sure they receive the health care they need and hope they’ll be able to return to making money when they’re well? As to “allow companies to create a profit”, no one wants to deny companies an honest profit. If you’re speaking of insurance companies, those that can compete with a public plan deserve to make a profit. Finally, as to the increasing tax revenues to decrease our debt, are you advocating the immediate repeal of the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy. I am, as the kids say, so down with that. Great, we agree, now let’s work together to reform our evil greed driven system.

In any case, the Taliban who were in charge of Afghanistan were sheltering Al-Qaeda, who planned and executed those attacks. With the approval of the entire world community and the U.N, we invaded them.

(boy, this debate stuff sure would be easier if we didn’t have to first teach the wingnuts all the basic facts first)

Unfortunately instead of committing to keeping our focus on the people who had attacked us, President George W. Bush launched a second war in Iraq, which drained manpower and attention away from Afghanistan – which was the nation sheltering the terrorist group who planned and executed a massive attack on U.S. soil. I mention this again in case you forgot since the last paragraph.

    http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2009/07/27/new-cbo-study-public-health-care-option-wont-dominate-system/

CBO says 1 trillion dollars over 10 years.

    http://www.reuters.com/article/topNews/idUSTRE4BE6LN20081215

Reuters reflect both wars could cost us 1.7 trillion dollars by 2018 (16 years).

Yes, and in that same 10-yr period, the same amount of money was PULLED from the system thanks to the Bush tax cuts. If those tax cuts had never occurred, the money to cover the entire country with reasonable health care wouldn’t even need to dip into any other area. With the bloated military budget, setting a tiny portion of said budget, and transferring those funds to health care would keep the system viable forever, without any noticeable affect whatsoever on the state of our military, which already spends more than the rest of the world’s military budget…combined.

In that same 10-yr period, when you compare the administrative costs of the existing government run health care (2-3% of the total cost) to private insurance (15-30% of the total), the savings on administrative costs alone…all alone…is $3.5 trillion in that same 10-yr period if switched over to single payer.

You think private insurance companies are spending $1.4 million per DAY (of money that they received from those they insure, mind you) to lobby and advertise to allow them to keep those administrative costs through the roof is accidental? No, they are scared to death of a viable, universal health care system in America that they can never compete with, in either cost or service. You think it’s coincidence that the highest satisfaction rates for health care in this country are through government run services like Medicare? By a significant margin, to boot.

You think it’s accidental that here in America, the hospital staff that processes claims takes up an entire FLOOR of a hospital, while countries like Japan, et al, have a single, small room, often with one person, processing the same volume of claims? How much money do hospitals waste on that alone?

That is before accounting for the savings a preventative health care approach provides. Emergency care costs everyone more than if the entire populace were covered and actively engaging in preventative care.

That is before accounting for the lower costs of medicines if the government were allowed to negotiate for prices like every other buyer, especially massive buyers such as said government program, can and do.

That is before accounting for the complete elimination of subsidies to private insurance that come from Medicare, et al. Those subsidies, and the inability to negotiate for drug prices, are the reason why Medicare, et al, are struggling. That, and the many little cuts the Republicans and other corporate-owned politicians have inflicted over the decades. Death of a thousand cuts, when it is utterly unnecessary.

That is before accounting for the increased productivity of a healthier citizenry. We are already a productive society, yet health care costs continue to drive the prices down.

And before you pull some bullshit canard like tort reform out of your arse, know that a mere 0.4% of all medical procedures result in a frivolous lawsuit. 4% of all medical procedures result in damages significant enough to warrant a lawsuit. Of that 4%, 90% of those lawsuits are justified due to negligence on the part of a doctor. In other words, only 10% of all such lawsuits are frivolous, while the others are in fact justified.

Note that a mere 2% of the entire cost of health care is due to lawsuits…all lawsuits. A $250,000 cap only hurts those who legitimately deserve to get paid for a screw-up by their doctor. Eliminate the entirety of lawsuits, and you only save 2%. Remember that 90% number above? You just saved 2% while eliminating 1.8% that were actually justifiable payouts to plaintiffs.

Meanwhile, 60%+ of all bankruptcies in the country are due to medical bills. Over SIXTY PERCENT. Do you get that? Do you understand it? The costs, across the board, need to be brought down. A profit motive ain’t gonna cut it, when the only recourse for such companies to secure increasing profits each quarter is by either raising prices, or denying claims.

And why does it take asking the same question several times for this “person” to understand basic English? Maybe you should write out your questions as a picture book since Mr. Watters can understand what you are asking. What a moron.

    Pat Pomery says:

Do you believe in Jesus, or not? You’re all over the map. First, you claim he didn’t exist then you claim to know what he thought.

How do you figure that these concepts are at odds with one another? One can easily claim Yeshua ben Yosef never existed, what with the complete lack of writings contemporary of his time actually existing, including the highly detailed Roman census information. The earliest writings mentioning the man known as Jesus come 20+ years after his supposed death.

On the other hand, we have a sizable volume of thoughts and beliefs attributed to Jesus. Therefore, IF he were real, and IF said thoughts and beliefs actually did come from that man, and one has studied said words extensively (something that many who do not believe in his existence, or at a minimum his divinity, have done; In fact, such studies are one of the major reasons FOR the lack of belief, not in spite of), one can garner a quite clear view of his likely feelings with regards to a given subject.

Being Christian in no way, shape or form gives anyone access to information above and beyond that which non-Christians can likewise access. Anyone can read the Sermon on the Mount, and the other words and actions attributed to the man, and gleam the same depth of insight into the feelings and thoughts of such a man.

Therefore, Hoodathunk is not remotely “all over the place”, as you assert.

There needs to be a “super vote up” option so I can make this my catch phrase everwhere I go on the Interwebz.

Simple fact: those who most believe that Jesus saves them least believe in what Jesus said. Or at least, the American political sphere is awash in those who are trying to misrepresent the word of Christ as being the opposite of what he actually said.

Some approaches to Christianity believe that we are currently in an “end times” situation brough about by the presence of and “anti-Christ.” Jesus himself warned that evil bastards would someday come in his name to try to pervert his message. His prescription? “You shall judge them by their fruits.” What are the causal outcomes of wingut/neocon propaganda? Nothing more or less than the end of the world in foreign policy, and massive destruction of the middle class (aka. soon-to-be-poor) in domestic policy. Then they want all the poor dead. Talk about an obvious “anti-Christ.”

I hereby call upon all Christians to divorce themselves immediately from the right-wing “rich mans’s agenda” approach and to honestly look at which political “side” more closely represents the teachings of Jesus. Who wants less war? Who wants to heal the sick? Who wants us to do unto others as we would have them do unto us?

When it’s boiled down to such simple Christian principles, it becomes clear that the GOP is nothing less than the arm of Satan in the political sphere today. Their attempts to subvert the “Christian right” are well known. It is well past time for the true “Christian majority” to rise up against these liars and to vote for true social justice for once, as Jesus would.
