Jindal blocks non-existent state funding for ACORN.

JindalWebLouisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) is trying to shore up his anti-ACORN bona fides. The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports today that Jindal issued an executive order barring state funds from going to the community organizing group. However, there’s one small kink in Jindal’s plan:

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal issued an executive order to keep any state money from going to the controversy-wracked Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, which has its national headquarters in New Orleans.

According to the state’s Division of Administration, no state agencies have existing contracts with ACORN.

Since recently released videos showing ACORN staff engaging in inappropriate and potentially unlawful activity, the group’s president said ACORN will conduct a “thorough review” of the organization’s operation. (HT: TPM)

ACORN is one of the right’s favorite punching bags. Progressives need a common response to the accusations against these ACORN staff members. Two Congress members from my area – one a full throated right winger and one a Blue Dog Dem – have said they are pushing to federally defund ACORN.

Part of my response to all this is: why the overkill?
Should we destroy an organization because a few people acted outside that organization’s rules, without a thorough investigation of the incident and if the actions were sanctioned higher up? The right sure didn’t act that way with the CIA torture, the Abu Ghraib abuses, Blackwater’s actions. It was AUTOMATICALLY “a few bad actors” rather than the organization as a whole – no investigation needed, thank you very much. But with ACORN, it’s “an evil organization” at the core.

‘You lie’ Wilson shows two faces on illegal immigration
    By Kathleen Miller
    Published: September 18, 2009

    http://rawstory.com/08/news/2009/09/18/you-lie-wilson-shows-two-faces-on-illegal-immigration/

Wilson may have a conflict of interest, however. Two months before he heckled Obama, he introduced legislation to keep Sainey Fatty, an illegal immigrant from Gambia, in the country. Fatty came to the U.S. for school in the early ’90s and lived here for seven years while under a deportation order, according to his friend Bill Cook’s blog.

In his bill, Wilson asks Congress to forgive Fatty’s immigration woes, drop the deportation order against Fatty and allow him to remain in the country legally.

Wilson’s communications director Ryan Murphy told Raw Story in an e-mail that “Congressman Wilson does not support illegal immigrants getting access to a government taxpayer funded health insurance program.” He did not respond to questions about what motivated Wilson to keep Fatty in the country or whether Wilson supports Fatty’s ability to receive medical care in the U.S.
    (continued)

Maybe Bobby can direct Wilson to the nearest ACORN office to find a corrupt agent to house the illegal immigrant supported by Wilson. Maybe if Wilson pretends to be a pimp? I’m sure he and Bobby can shop around.

I really like the symmetry of Bobby Jindal’s public corruption mission. First, he hands out money that came from a program he denounced, but tries to make it look like it’s coming from his offices. Now he’s stopping money from going out through a program that he’s more than willing to denounce, but neglects to mention that there isn’t any such money. Talk about being right on top of being the weasel*-of-the-day. I stand in awe. The shitbird is an inspiration and an exemplar for weasels everywhere.

Can I say that I wouldn’t be surprised if Jindal thought Congress’ reprimand of Joe Wilson was a waste of time and taxpayer money because “Wilson already apologized and the President accepted”?

And geez is this guy a moron. I am *still* reeling over his statements that volcano watching is a complete waste of money. It’s nice to know he doesn’t think Alaska, Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Montana, Hawaii, and California deserve Safety First. Particularly since at least 4 of those states have *active* volcanic emissions in the last 5 years.

    ************************************************

I hear ya, PLC — but unfortunately, I think you know as well as I do why the Republicans were so willing to minimize the abuses at Abu Ghraib and elsewhere by the military and its contractors yet so eager to crucify ACORN in its entirety over the actions of a few individuals. It has nowhere nearly as much to do with the safety of our nation as it does with politics. The fact is that historically and traditionally, the military and its contractors support and/or contribute to the Republican Party — and Republicans know that it’s not only discourteous and ungrateful to bite the hand which helps feed you, the people whose hands you’ve bitten usually don’t take it well. They have no such restrictions or reservations when it comes to ACORN, since ACORN has historically been an advocate for people who tend to vote Democrat — which, let’s face it, is enough to make them the enemy as far as Republicans are concerned. Since ACORN technically isn’t part of the federal government in the way that the CIA and the military are, there’s less reason for concern that an investigation into their affairs could end up implicating high-ranking governmental officials. Even if they can, the right wing would certainly have no objection if officials from the Obama administration were implicated whereas they adamantly refused to even consider the possibility of Bush administration involvement in what happened at Abu Ghraib and attempted at every turn to excuse and justify it. Denial ain’t just a river in Egypt!

Not only that, but if the words which they frequently choose to use in reference to these people is any indication, many of today’s Republicans and their supporters are Social Darwinists who apparently regard the population which ACORN serves — minorities and the economically disadvantaged — with little more than contempt. This is evident from the fact that some of them have voiced objection to virtually any and all governmentally-funded programs which serve this population.

  57. jwmuiyaai says:

It’s not like ACORN workers haven’t been convicted of criminal activity before. Besides, they claimed that government money is only a small part of their funding anyway, so it shouldn’t be a big problem.

If one believes that, P.T. Barnum was right: there’s a sucker born every minute.

Let’s do something out of the ordinary, and look at this rationally: ACORN National’s address is 1024 Elysian Fields Ave. New Orleans, LA 70117. That’s the national HQs which submits 501c3 filings to the IRS.

It’s also the same address of the local 100 chapter of the SEIU. Not that there’s any connection, or anything (*wink, wink).

If ACORN Nat’l HQ is located in La., it might stand to reason that this community organization – DEEPLY involved in politics – just might have state gub’mint connections and contracts.

This is simply pre-emptive action. Those possible connections and contracts may prove to be an embarrassment to Louisiana’s high profile republican governor.

I just loves me sume rational, LOCO, so I fact checked you, and all I have to say is, so what?

    I looked on ACORNs web page and found the following statement;

“ACORN is a non-profit, non-partisan social justice organization with national headquarters in New York, New Orleans and Washington, D.C.”

So, why did you leave out the other national office addresses. And what does SEIU have to do with this? I wouldn’t be surprised if one organization or the other owns the building or has the lease on it, and either leases or sublets office space to the other. Might even be that SEIU owns/leases and provides space to ACORN National pro-bono. Did ACORN have a national office in NOLA before Katrina? And if they did, what’s your point? Anyway?
