At the Family Research Council’s Values Voters Summit today, FRC Senior Fellow Pat Fagan, Heritage Foundation scholar Matthew Spalding and Michael Schwartz, the chief of staff for Sen. Tom Coburn, held a discussion on “The New Masculinity.” Schwartz, who was the final speaker, said that Fagan wanted him to discuss “how men, who already are good husbands and fathers,” can “change the culture.”
A few minutes into his speech, Schwartz moved to the topic of pornography, calling it a “blight” and a “disease” that parents’ “sons” would encounter. Noting that he was about to get “politically incorrect,” Schwartz said that it is his “observation that boys at that age have less tolerance for homosexuality than just about any other class of people”:
SCHWARTZ: But it is my observation that boys at that age have less tolerance for homosexuality than just about any other class of people. They speak badly about homosexuality. And that’s because they don’t want to be that way. They don’t want to fall into it. And that’s a good instinct. After all, homosexuality, we know, studies have been done by the National Institute of Health to try to prove that its genetic and all those studies have proved its not genetic. Homosexuality is inflicted on people.
Schwartz then recalled “a very good friend” of his “who was in the homosexual lifestyle for a long time,” saying that he “had good conversations about, about the malady that he suffered.” He then relayed “an astonishingly insightful remark” his friend had made about the relationship between pornography and being gay:
SCHWARTZ: And one of the things that he said to me, that I think is an astonishingly insightful remark. He said, “all pornography is homosexual pornography because all pornography turns your sexual drive inwards. Now think about that. And if you, if you tell an 11-year-old boy about that, do you think he’s going to want to go out and get a copy of Playboy? I’m pretty sure he’ll lose interest. That’s the last thing he wants.” You know, that’s a, that’s a good comment. It’s a good point and it’s a good thing to teach young people.
Schwartz then added a slight caveat, saying, “if it doesn’t turn you homosexual, it at least renders you less capable of loving your wife. And it’s something you need to be healed of.” Watch it:
Schwartz is no stranger to extreme rhetoric about the gay community. In 2005, he denounced the Supreme Court for giving Americans “the right to commit buggery.” Later, he told Max Blumenthal, “”I’m a radical! I’m a real extremist. I don’t want to impeach judges. I want to impale them!” In 1987, Schwartz co-wrote Gays, AIDS, and You, which according to Blumenthal, alleged that the gay community was “using the AIDS crisis to pursue [their] political agenda.”
Transcript:
FAGAN: Mike Schwartz is an old friend. I first met Mike when we were both at Family Research Council, or, Free Congress Foundation under Paul Weyrich, who is one of the great architects of the modern social conservative movement. And both of us learned a huge amount from Paul, with Paul and owe a huge debt to him as I think probably everybody here in the room does. Mike then went on to do great things on the Hill, great things on television, and truncating stuff here, he was first of the staff of then-Congressman Coburn, who then retired. Then thought of coming back to the Senate, chose Mike as his campaign manager and I remember somebody in the Senate saying, “my goodness, the Republicans are really afraid of Tom Coburn coming back, but they’re ten times more afraid of Mike Schwartz being with him.” With that — and everybody who knows Mike knew exactly what they meant. He is very effective behind the scenes, mainly. Occasionally, he gets the liberal press all riled up by dissing Mike to do that. Most effective, I give you now, Mike Schwartz.SCHWARTZ: One thing Pat, one thing Pat was kind enough to do was to omit what I was doing between Dr. Coburn’s tenure in the House and Dr. Coburn’s tenure in the Senate. And in light of the topic of this panel, it’s most ironic because for those four years I was a Concerned Woman for America. And I used to tell people, if you looked like me, you’d be a concerned woman too. Now, now I’m totally unconcerned, so much so that I’m not even a woman. Pat’s given me a difficult assignment because he said — you know, I could do this policy stuff, that’s what I do — but he said, “no no no, I don’t want you to talk about policy. I want you to talk about how men, who already are good husbands and fathers — we take that for granted — but if you’re already a good husband and you’re already a good father, how do you change the culture?”
[...]
SCHWARTZ: You know, if you don’t have love in your life, it’s not a very complete life. And yet, we don’t want to talk about it. And we especially fail to talk about it to our sons and to our friends. They’re the ones who need to hear it the most because they’re still making up their minds about what do I want to be when the time comes. And believe me, the temptations are out there. One of the temptations that your sons are going to run into is pornography. Pornography is a blight. It is a disaster. It is, it is one of those silent diseases in our society that we haven’t been able to overcome very well. Now, I may be getting politically incorrect here. But one — It’s been a few years, not that many, since I was closely associated with pre-adolescent boys, boys who are like 10 to 12 years of age. But it is my observation that boys at that age have less tolerance for homosexuality than just about any other class of people.
I had a very good friend who was in the homosexual lifestyle for a long time and then he had a religious conversion in the eighties. And he bought a old motel and turned it into a hospice for some of his former associates who were dying of AIDS. He helped, he helped almost 300 men die. This man was a real hero. But he knew that he wasn’t as healed as he thought he was. He was able to resist temptation. He was able to resist sin. But he wasn’t healed enough to take on the responsibilities of marriage. And he was a brilliant man in the sense that he knew himself. And he knew his limits. And he and I had good conversations about, about the malady that he suffered. And one of the things that he said to me, that I think is an astonishingly insightful remark.
His name is Jim Johnson. He’s a friend of mine. He ran an organization called Beyond Rejection Ministries. And I consider him one of the most heroic men I’ve ever met. But all pornography is homosexual pornography because all pornography turns your sexual drive inwards. And that in fact is what it does. I know couples now who are struggling with the husband’s addiction to pornography. It’s a terrible thing. And that’s what happens. And, you know, if it doesn’t turn you homosexual, it at least renders you less capable of loving your wife. And it’s something you need to be healed of.
Sweeeet…
September 19th, 2009 at 8:57 pmsomebody smack that one out of the park…
god bless you, mr. schwartz, for teeing that one up that way.
September 19th, 2009 at 8:58 pmOMG! These guys are getting more and more stupid every friggin day! Just the other day, the Repug elite were worried that Michelle Bachman was making them look bad, and now we have this moron and Gov. Perry making asses out of themselves. WTF? It doesn’t get any better than this. Pure hilarity.

September 19th, 2009 at 9:08 pmHe said, “all pornography is homosexual pornography because all pornography turns your sexual drive inwards. Now think about that.”
OK, I thought about it. I still don’t see how looking at pictures of naked women would make me gay.
.
And if you, if you tell an 11-year-old boy about that, do you think he’s going to want to go out and get a copy of Playboy? I’m pretty sure he’ll lose interest.
“Why Hello there, 11-year old. Pornography turns your sexual interest inwards. Would you like this copy of Playboy?”
1. WTF? Stop offering porno to children, you freak.
2. Obviously the kid would still want the magazine regardless of what some grown-up freak babbled at him. Would you decline this just because some creepy old guy told you it “turned your sexuality inwards?” Hell no, you grab it out of his sweaty hand and run like hell.
September 19th, 2009 at 9:08 pm“And, you know, if it doesn’t turn you homosexual, it at least renders you less capable of loving your wife.”
Sex =/= love, Schwartz. Learning the difference would be a really good starting point if you’re actually going to try to claim to help married couples.

September 19th, 2009 at 9:11 pmDid this dummy see the study released last year that showed that people in red states are more into pornography than those in blue states?

At any rate keep this guy and his pseudo sexual psychology away from my kids.

September 19th, 2009 at 9:23 pmSo if its a lesbian porno flick does that make me a gay woman in mans body?
September 19th, 2009 at 9:23 pmStatistically, red states are the biggest consumers of pornography. I believe Utah is the biggest consumer per capita and correct me if I am wrong but isn’t Utah also the biggest red state per capita.
Just another Republican hypocrisy. Along with the fact child molesters are overwhelmingly Conservatives/Republicans.
September 19th, 2009 at 9:27 pmYou can’t deny that most Americans get their sex ed from porn because my party is on a crusade to outlaw the curricular stuff!
September 19th, 2009 at 9:27 pmWhat they need is some good old fashioned, Christian porn. Starring Carrie Prejean doing it with Jesus. That’ll straighten out the wayward!
September 19th, 2009 at 9:28 pmIf you’re a gay man, looking at Playboy might accentuate that for you. I cringe to think what mental gyrations any boy would have to go through to convince himself that looking at pictures of naked women is gay.
Trivia: Playboy was originally intended to sell products to a new class of male—the bachelor. The pictures of naked women were a proclamation of not being gay, because previously men being persnickety about consumer items and fashion was considered gay.
September 19th, 2009 at 9:31 pmElBruce says:
What they need is some good old fashioned, Christian porn. Starring Carrie Prejean doing it with Jesus. That’ll straighten out the wayward!
Such a flick would put Hollywood out of business. They simply would not have anything to follow what would be the viewing epic of all time. The video could be mass produced and it would still be worth thousands.
September 19th, 2009 at 9:32 pmPssst… pssst… pssst… Mr. Schwartz… psst… over here…

September 19th, 2009 at 10:02 pmcon?serv?a?tive – noun??[kuhn-sur-vuh-tiv]:
1. An ignorant, yet frightening, crazy man.
September 19th, 2009 at 10:02 pmIt has been a few decades since I’ve been 11. But as I remember it, my peers laughed hilariously at the stupid, made-up excuses that were given about drugs at the time.
Even worse and rather pernicious, the ridiculous ideas that were given (and the fact that they were stupid on the very face of it) emboldened them to discount other adult sayings that actually may have had some truth in them.
Were there valid reasons to avoid drugs ? Of course.
Are there valid arguments against pornography? Of course.
Were there valid reasons to avoid teen-sex ? Of course.
But when adults said not to do it because it would make you go blind, you learned to laugh at the silly things adults said to scare you. Then you had sex and didn’t go blind, and that emboldened you to flaunt other taboos.

September 19th, 2009 at 10:26 pmSo the pictures my ex gave me when I moved away to college actually made me gay? I never noticed any surgery scares on the ex’s and current girlfriend since her, must be a bunch of good doctors in Florida then.

September 19th, 2009 at 10:31 pmIt certainly is typical for the GOPers that complain the loudest about homosexuality or pornography to be the ones that are closet homosexuals or porn aficionados.
September 19th, 2009 at 10:34 pmColburn seems to have sex with men on his mind – go figure.
WTF is this “value voter” thing that conservatives have imbued their self with? They are “vicious voters” or “vacuous voters”, but not value voters.
September 19th, 2009 at 10:38 pmSCHWARTZ: But one — It’s been a few years, not that many, since I was closely associated with pre-adolescent boys, boys who are like 10 to 12 years of age.
Please, elaborate. Start with how many years ago?
September 19th, 2009 at 10:42 pmSo, is Schwartz proposing bigger government to keep pornography away from the kiddies?
What about those loyal “family values” parents?
September 19th, 2009 at 10:45 pmI found this from the National Institute of Health:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7560918
It doesn’t conclude that homosexuality is ‘inflicted’, it says that the studies to date fail to meet criteria to be considered determinative.
This, however, from the National Cancer Institute, seems to conclude that homosexuality is genetic:
http://www.cs.cmu.edu/afs/cs/user/scotts/bulgarians/nih-upi.html
If I have to choose between scaring kids by convincing them that porn will turn them gay or recognizing that homosexuality is genetic; I think I’ll take my chances with the National Cancer Institute.
September 19th, 2009 at 10:49 pmWT EVERLASTING F!
Tell us coburn how you know this is true? Are you speaking from past experience?
September 19th, 2009 at 10:56 pmSchwartz says that pornography turns the sexual drives inward. Does he think that people only began servicing themselves when Playboy hit the newstands? I imagine that would be a pretty long couple of million years while man waited patiently for Hugh Hefner and the invention of the camera.
Cavegirls are cool and everything, but sometimes you come back from a four day hunt and Zug Zug’s got a headache.
September 19th, 2009 at 10:58 pmSchwartz says that all porn is gay porn. And porn turns you gay.
Evidence of homosexual behavior in the animal world abounds.
Is there some sweet monkey or dolphin porn out there that I’m just not aware of?
September 19th, 2009 at 11:03 pmIf porn turns men gay, then most men would be gay.
September 19th, 2009 at 11:03 pmYou all just don’t understand. Schwartz just means that all pr0n is “dirty.” Gay is dirty. Sex is dirty. Naked people is dirty. The words become interchangeable, because anything that causes a stirring in Schwartz’s loins is “dirty.” Mom made that very clear to him years ago.
Bad boy, Mikey. Bad. Dirty boy! Just wait until your father gets home!
September 19th, 2009 at 11:06 pmSchwartz is a joke and it’s sad that he wants to use fear to get kids to do what he thinks is right.
Kids shouldn’t be afraid of being gay. They should be taught that if you’re gay, that’s how you were made and it’s okay.
Trying to teach kids that a genetic disposition to homosexuality is an infliction fuels bigotry against homosexuals.
And that’s the real sin.
September 19th, 2009 at 11:13 pmZooey. implying that ‘most’ men would be gay is a monumental understatement.

September 19th, 2009 at 11:16 pmIf porn turned men gay then why do men still rape women?

I’m so sick of these people lying to our children.
September 20th, 2009 at 1:09 am“all pornography is homosexual pornography”
Someones been looking at the wrong kind of porn……..or is that intentional?
While I don’t think it’s always the case their have been enough instances of people who could be called homophobic been busted engaging in gay activity that one has to wonder about Schwartz.
Think about it:
Mark Foley
September 20th, 2009 at 1:13 amLarry Craig
Michael Schwartz?
I’m so blind from flying solo, I can’t tell if I have hair on my palms or not.
September 20th, 2009 at 1:15 amSchwartz is probably just another (neo) Log Cabin Republican; he can be found in the closet with a few others.

September 20th, 2009 at 1:24 amP.D. says:
MapleStreet says:
It has been a few decades since I’ve been 11. But as I remember it, my peers laughed hilariously at the stupid, made-up excuses that were given about drugs at the time.
Ah, the Reagan years… Nancy and “just say no.” The infamous appointment of a “drug czar.” D.A.R.E. in every school. It was so like totally radically awesome to stick it to all the straights trying to tell us that all drugs were always “bad” no matter what. Just like playing Space Invaders with infinite quarters…
.
Zooey says:
So, is Schwartz proposing bigger government to keep pornography away from the kiddies?
Of course. All social “conservatives” support tyrannical control of the media.
.
gummble-bee-itch says:
You all just don’t understand. Schwartz just means that all pr0n is “dirty.” Gay is dirty. Sex is dirty. Naked people is dirty. The words become interchangeable, because anything that causes a stirring in Schwartz’s loins is “dirty.”
Excellent examply of wingnut terminological analysis. Bad = bad, good = good.
.
VerbalKint says:
The only thing left to discuss I suppose is whether Schwartz is secretly gay, or obsessed with porn, or both.
This does seem to be the primary topic he has brought to the public sphere for discussion.
.
Here’s the simple facts: the people running the wingnut/bible-belt “anti-gay” wing are themselves all screaming homosexuals. Or else they wouldn’t care. Ask anybody who’s come out of the closet: while in the closet, they were always at the forefront of blaming and persecuting anybody they could find for being gay, in order to avoid any suspicion of homosexuality themselves. There has never yet been an instance of someone in the “anti-gay” movement who people thought might be gay but who turned out to be straight. At the same time, there have been more and more fo them who people thought were straight but who turned out to be gay.
This is all you need to know about the evangelical Christian anti-gay movement: it is entirely run by (closeted and fcuked up) gays. If those people weren’t a part of it, then they wouldn’t care about teh gays at all.
As a result, it’s useful to keep a running checklist of right-wing freaks who concentrate on the “gay” thing, because that’s the logical equivalent of wearing a sequined dress and beehive wig to Mark Foley’s next birthday party.
Therefore, we may conclude that the following people are homosexual:
Pat Fagan
Matthew Spalding
Michael Schwartz
Tom Coburn
The “scandals” exposing this already-obvious fact will be forthcoming in the next few months.
September 20th, 2009 at 1:25 am@ 97. elBruce…
Yes, but… Tom Coburn is in a different closet in the Log Cabin than the other three. As a Senator, he rates better quarters; perhaps a walk-in, with a floor to ceiling mirror so he can check his seams when he’s in drag, and perhaps a nice niche for all the size 13 manolo blaniks…

September 20th, 2009 at 2:02 amtotally OT – joe cantwell, did you ping me on a comment about my being in NM and say something about Lifeline’s Georgia O’Keefe thing today (a recommendation)? I admit I did not watch it. Being here (about 30-40 miles south of Abiquiu and Ghost Ranch) and having a modest interest in the arts and crafts, I hear and see stuff about G. O’Keefe quite frequently – and that’s without noting the fact that my wife has a poster featuring an O’Keefe, a blue iris, that was used for a Madison Art Center O’Keefe show framed and on one of our walls.
Anyway, one of our friends has a Model T that he drove over to Las Vegas NM in order to have it appear with a bunch of other Model Ts (and probably some other antique motorcars) in one of the street scenes for the production.

I’m sure it’s all in very good taste, backup, except for coburn looking like some twice warmed over burnt out drag rodeo princess zombie.
I don’t feel any particular curiousity about the gay Rs and their Log Cabin, and I suspect they don’t even know for sure the kind of snakes and spiders they have in the closets. The Log Cabin Rs I’m acquainted with seem to have one characteristic that a fair number of other Rs don’t – they’re honest; they are willing to dispute politics and policy instead of starting the conversation with insults and lies. That may just come with the turf, though.
September 20th, 2009 at 2:26 amVirtual Pebble. If Republicans are serious about liberty, they should demand that gay people have the same rights as straight people. They’re not.
If Republicans feel compelled to judge homosexuals, they should first sort out what happened with Haggard, Craig, Foley, etc, etc, etc…
People are born gay. They don’t choose it.
The idea that an all powerful, all loving God would consider homosexuality a sin and then create someone gay so that person could live a life of torment, is as ridiculous as the idea that looking at pictures of naked ladies turns young men gay.
September 20th, 2009 at 2:46 amSometimes I really like “b-cup.” It makes the times I disagree with him that much more frustrating, forcing me to actually wrestle with his arguments rather than just bat them aside.

…it is a catastrophe for the Republicans. The old G.O.P. Southern strategy is gone with the wind. The more the party is identified with nasty name-calling, freak-show protestors, immigrant-bashing (the proximate cause of Wilson’s outburst at Obama) and, yes, racism, the faster it will commit DEMOGRAPHIC SUICIDE as America becomes ever younger and more diverse.
September 20th, 2009 at 7:13 amBut Democrats shouldn’t be cocky. Over the short term, the REAL economic grievances lurking beneath the extremism of the Beck brigades can do damage to both parties. The recession-spawned anger… could yet find a more mainstream outlet in a populist revolt from the left and center.
In case no one has noted it, Schwartz is clearly talking about HIS OWN experience…when he’s sees ANY porn, it’s gay cause he’s looking at the guy’s dick….LOL…I say this cause it takes one to know one. And he’s even queerer than I am.
September 20th, 2009 at 7:26 amDid anyone here notice the concern only for little boys becoming gay and no mention of little girls? The Repugniscums are about the little boys.
So…does lesbian porno make little boys gay too?
And if little boys watch the Miss America pagent will they become gay? Or just “kinda gay” from watching the bathing suit competion? hahhahahaaa…
Schwartz is a joke of a “human being.” And not a funny joke either.
September 20th, 2009 at 8:57 amSCHWARTZ: But it is my observation that boys at that age have less tolerance for homosexuality than just about any other class of people.
Perhaps he should enlighten us as to the extent of his gay predatory urges toward young men.
September 20th, 2009 at 9:09 amWithout porn most straight men would be rapists. Men NEED porn – women don’t put out enough. Nothing wrong with turning your lust inwards when a willing partner is not available.
Gay men, having already ‘turned gay,’ I guess are free to carry on with our porno obsession.

This is more screwed up holy roller crap.
Those folks are out to destroy this nation, scrap the Constitution, and establish an evangelical theocracy with its own form of Sharia.
Those people have taken their limited grasp of the John Galt character in ATLAS SHRUGGED, and have nailed Galt to the cross, essentially remaking the notion of Jesus into a crazed libertarian messiah. The Sermon on the Mount and the teachings of Jesus have been thrown into the trash at these churches.
Avoid the megachurches like the plague, and start laying into your friends and families that still attend and support the holy roller cult.
Those people would torture and kill you, all in the name of Jesus.
September 20th, 2009 at 9:58 amValues Voters! What a joke. I’m so sick of these lying, self-righteous, idiots! Schwartz is probably a closet homosexual. The ones that are obssessed with homosexuality usually are.

Then why are they always “ball tapping” and drawing pictures of dicks?
Schwartz is probably a secret anal sex freak.
My gay friends tell me that the guys who just can’t shut up about the evils of homosexuality are the very ones who are craving it so much.
I have heard story after story about ministers, choir directors and deacons in holy roller churches who have gay sex on the sly, usually in bathrooms, parks or
rough areas.
From what I hear, Craigs List is a goldmine for gay-hating men who are seeking sex with “straight” guys or with “married” men.

September 20th, 2009 at 11:41 amI know why the said what he did. Because Sen. Coburn and his chief of staff were: Sittin In A Tree, K I S S I N G! i have nothing against gay people, but this gay clearly needs to come out of the closet and then he won’t have to play this “hate” game anymore. Remember the Congressman from Florida who complained about child molesters and he turned out to be one? People who are afraid of “coming out” often say extreme things to hide their gay tendencies. I’m sure this man is gay, and I say more power to him, when he comes out. Please do not take my comments as gay bashing, because I believe they should have every right that I have as an American. I merely wanted to point out the fact that “closeted” people often act this way.
September 20th, 2009 at 11:46 amThese kinds of statements reveal how shallow the rhetoric of the religious zealots is. If you go into the adult section of a store, even Barnes and Noble, you will find that heterosexual pornography outnumbers homosexual pornography vastly. I would imagine that like any store they stock in rough proportion to sales.
The zealots would do better to complain about sexual deviancy which is actually harmful rather than trying to get the government to police the actions of consenting adults in their bedrooms.
It is sad that they conflate the bullying which can occur on school campuses of any minority with some kind of natural law. I’m sure those who railed against interracial marriages used similar arguments in the past.
September 20th, 2009 at 11:53 amWhen the conservatives start talking about social issues, it means they have no ideas about the real substantive issues such as the economy, health care, education, etc.
September 20th, 2009 at 11:57 amAnd ain’t it curious how the girl who had a pageant organization pay for her new boobs so she could show them to the camera was a featured speaker to the “values” voters? Even worse, she got applause when she accused liberals of being intolerant – right after she proclaimed her own “bravery” and “courage” and told them how proud of herself she was for being intolerant.
It may be trite, but truth surely is stranger than fiction.

Having known a few (out) gay Rs (and no, I’ve never understood why they stayed with the party, but that’s another matter) and having seen a few stories about the Log Cabin Republicans, I’ve wondered if the Log Cabins are a more diverse group, Republican-wise, than the smoking train wreck that seems to dominate the national not-really-very-main-stream party. If so, is it simply because, being out, they don’t feel any obligation to toe the social fascist line any more?

Virtual Pebble. I don’t know much about Log Cabin Republicans, but it would be interesting to know what they see in the Republican party.

I think this is a relatively Recent situation….since the Republicans sold their soul to the Religious Right.
Remember…It was Barry Goldwater, 1964
Republican Presidential Candidate, who defended Gays in the Military. His famous Quote..”You Don’t have to BE Straight, to SHOOT Straight.
In Years past,my District elected Steve Gunderson, an openly Gay Republican to Congress. He was a fiscal conservative and a social Liberal. Reelected several times from a Blue District.
Today, I can’t see Republicans crossing the “values voters”.
September 20th, 2009 at 2:37 pmWhy are the freaks so uptight about sexuality?
September 20th, 2009 at 3:00 pmOne of the frightening things about people like this is how anti-science these people are. I am sure he would challenge the scientific community over the discovery of homosexuals in non-humans. They are opposed to most stem cell research to fight disease. They would have us live like people did 2,000 years ago if only they could get their way. No thanks!
September 20th, 2009 at 3:01 pmI wish that’s where Republicans would go. Their invested in the religious right, but that demographic is going the wrong way. (Today’s seniors that provide a lot of the money and participate at the polls will eventually be replaced with Baby Boomers that are more socially liberal.
Republicans will have to do something or the relative irrelevance they have now, will begin to look like glory days.
Bigotry and intolerance are losing positions, the only appeal I think the party can salvage (or adopt) would be libertarian values and true fiscal conservatism.
September 20th, 2009 at 3:38 pmdbadass, I do believe they are taught from an early age that sex is dirty, disgusting and filthy. Did I mention disgusting?
That mindset is the leftover of the Puritan in some Xianatic cult covens.

Hi, good start
September 20th, 2009 at 7:48 pmSCHWARTZ: And one of the things that he said to me, that I think is an astonishingly insightful remark. He said, “all pornography is homosexual pornography because all pornography turns your sexual drive inwards.”
************************************************************
As so often happens when people use faulty logic in an attempt to make their prejudices seem rational, all Schwartz managed to do with this argument was prove how weak and flimsy it is.
For starters, while I’m not aware of any research studies that have as yet identified specific genetic markers for homosexual orientation, genes are not the only biological factors which have the potential to influence behavior — and whether Schwartz wants to acknowledge it or not (and clearly he does not), there are documented research studies which found statistically significant physiological differences between gay men and straight men. There are also documented examples of homosexual behavior across a variety of bird and animal species — and as far as I know, birds and animals don’t use pornography nor have any conscious awareness or control of their own behavior! There’s also at least one documented study which found that a group of self-professed homophobic men found homoerotic imagery significantly more sexually arousing that the control group of non-homophobic men did — suggesting that there may be something to Freud’s theory of reaction formation as a defense against what the person perceives as unacceptable feelings or thoughts.
When the man of whom Schwartz speaks claimed that pornography “turns your sexual drive inwards”, it should be fairly obvious that he was referring to masturbation (which many conservative Christian denominations, especially those which view sex as intended purely for procreation, consider a sin all by itself). However, the statistics on human sexuality indicate that the overwhelming majority of people at least occasionally masturbate — and that at least some of those who say they do not are not telling the truth. Ergo, if masturbation and/or use of heterosexual pornography were positively correlated with homosexual orientation — a theory for which, as far as I know, there is no corroborating evidence whatsoever — this would imply that there’s almost no such thing as a complete heterosexual per se because the vast majority of us turn our sexuality inward on occasion and therefore must have some degree of bisexual or homosexual leanings as a result. Ironically, Kinsey’s extensive research into human sexuality strongly suggests that there’s actually some truth to this and that orientation is not an “either/or” prospect as some people might want to believe! While it’s true that extensive use of pornography can be a symptom of sexual addiction, there’s no indication that use of pornography promotes addiction — rather, the underlying emotional issues which led to the addiction manifest as a dependence on pornography. Contrary to what Schwartz or his friend might want to believe, his friend’s orientation did not stem from using pornography nor does the fiend’s deep emotional conflict over his own orientation prove that there’s something wrong with it. Rather, the adherence to religious beliefs which encourage a distorted and dysfunctional view of sex have led to feelings of guilt and self-hatred.
September 20th, 2009 at 10:17 pm“If it doesn’t turn you homosexual, it at least renders you less capable of loving your wife”
Well, that’s about as stupid as you can get, some folks are so retarded you just know they’ll never be capable of procreating.. Is it coïncidence that it’s the same peeps that are anti-porn? Nothing but spite out of jealousy…
September 21st, 2009 at 6:00 amTrying to connect the dots (or is that a fly speck?)…
So, turning your sexual drive inwards makes you gay because…we’re all gay on the inside?
So, if pornography makes you gay, does the apparent strong correlation between homosexuality and Republicanism mean pornography causes the GOP?
Since homosexuality is a lifestyle choice, does this then mean Republicans, too, can be scared straight?
Finally, since exposure to porn has failed to make me either gay or Republican, does this make me a self-hating closet case?

Well, except for GOP “moral values” politicians. At least you can forgive 11-year-olds for not being old enough to know better.
September 21st, 2009 at 1:17 pmPeople are born gay. They don’t choose it.
The idea that an all powerful, all loving God would consider homosexuality a sin and then create someone gay so that person could live a life of torment, is as ridiculous as the idea that looking at pictures of naked ladies turns young men gay.
Are you sure that “evolution” isn’t the cause of homo sexuality?
And, aren’t you being a little judgmental in this post? You do suggests that being a homo sexual is not a “happy” choice.
Are people born gay? bit doesn’t know.
bit has read the following from
http://www.na r th.com/docs/nonFactSSAEducDale.pdf
So, it appears that your comment about about people being born gay is still up for discussion.
This remark on CSA, assuming for a moment that it is accurate, means that the reason people become sexually ir responsible, as expressed through homo sexual behavior, is because of other sexually ir responsible men: the abusers. This fits very nicely with bit’s saw about immorality breeds, so to speak, immorality.
September 21st, 2009 at 2:39 pmElsewhere bit has read that among young men who “come out” early as many as 2/3 may have been “help along the way” by an older male.
This is probably what the FRC Senior Fellow wasn’t saying: It appears that in many cases that homo sexuals are “re cruit ed.”
Were this “re cruit ment” as extensive as suggested this would argue against homo sexual ity being inborn and would support the accusation that “gays are coming after your sons.”
September 21st, 2009 at 2:51 pmIf God didn’t create gays, as bit believes, and if evolution did gen them up – why would it, then is the only alternative ideas this one: homo sexuals make other homosexuals?
Anyone remember Dr. Hansens’s studey, http://www.dr tracey hansen.com, that concluded that the children of same-same gender couples are 4 to 10 times more likely to be homo sexuals? That’s simply teaching by example.
bit notes that http://www.na r th.com has an interest in promoting rep ara tive therapy. There’s gold in them thar ills.

September 21st, 2009 at 2:53 pmBased on this absurd logic of Mr. Schwartz, one wonders if perhaps his upbringing, or the lack thereof, may have made him so hateful and wrong. Perhaps the time he spent, as a 11 or 12 year old in the Catholic Church, without a stable family life, had anything to do with this craziness. hmmmm, just a thought.
September 21st, 2009 at 4:17 pmDon’t tell this “info” to mike huckabee….his son apparently had the biggest collection of porn at his university. What pathetic morons.
September 21st, 2009 at 9:18 pmBit you disgust me. You are an ignorant hatefilled bigot.
September 22nd, 2009 at 5:00 amThis is utterly sickening on so many levels. The entire argument is based on the assumption that both homosexuality and pornography are inherently wrong, which I believe to be false, and the notion that homosexuality is a choice, which I *know* is wrong. karin estetigi
September 24th, 2009 at 10:40 amhe’s probably right, even stupidly right. i’ve turnned gay after an overdosis of madonna’s erotic pics. just one doubt: don’t you find he’s speech too much, lets say… pornographic?
September 25th, 2009 at 3:05 pmI’m gay. I knew I was gay many years before I ever looked at any porno. Oh, and by the way, I’ve never bothered looking at Playboy. I’m not interested in titties. No interest at all.
I would bet that him being typical Republican (or so it seems lateley) Schwartz had his insightful conversations with his “good friend” right before they lit up their meth pipe and buggered each other. It sure seems like the guys who preach to others how to live their lives have the fullest closets.
