Ivan Marte, the ex-chairman of the Rhode Island Republican Hispanic Assembly, has announced that he’s quitting the Republican Party because he was embarrassed by Rep. Joe Wilson’s “you lie” outburst at President Obama:
“I do not want to continue being a member of a party in which the members of the party express themselves in that way,” said Marte, 59, of Cranston. In a phone interview, he called Wilson’s behavior “shameful” and “uncivilized.”
But Marte said Wilson’s outburst was the last straw in a series of disappointments that led him to break with his party.
In a letter to GOP chairman Giovanni Cicione, Marte wrote, “I do hope that my resignation served as a sign, that the Republican Party in this Nation need to reevaluate their position” on reaching out to minority groups.
Perhaps Michael Steele should follow his example, but he probably won’t
September 21st, 2009 at 3:43 pmThat’s one.
September 21st, 2009 at 3:44 pmI’m guessing this guy was 100% of the membership of the Rhode Island Republican Hispanic Assembly.
September 21st, 2009 at 3:44 pm….on reaching out to minority groups.
Oh but they do reach out, with a broom or a rake or a pair of handcuffs.
Tent is just a little smaller today….and will be even smaller tomorrow.
September 21st, 2009 at 3:45 pmRepublics have really backed themselves into a corner. It’s gonna become even MORE fun to watch.
September 21st, 2009 at 3:47 pma republican hispanic. that’s goddamn hilarious and i don’t know why.
September 21st, 2009 at 3:47 pmJust like Linc Chafee.
September 21st, 2009 at 3:49 pmIvan Marte,
Thank you.
Can you get another 100 million racist, fascist, RePugniScums to join in?
September 21st, 2009 at 3:50 pmFrankly I’m surprised there haven’t been more defections. The GOP is spoiling it’s brand so badly that the Edsel is starting to look like a good idea in comparison to being identified as a Republican.
September 21st, 2009 at 3:51 pmEither Marte is a man of convictions or a grandstanding fraud with big ambitions.
September 21st, 2009 at 3:51 pmCongratulations to Mr. Marte for taking a principled stand.
September 21st, 2009 at 3:52 pmThis man deserves a medal for what he did. He is truly an outstanding American and I’m very proud of him. I called the RNC just the other day about this exact issue. I told them that I could never join their party because they have too many people who appear to have racist views, like Rush Limbaugh, Glen Beck, Joe Wilson, Trent Lott, and numerous other elected official. Do you guys realize that there are ZERO black elected Republicans in Washington, not one. Why do you think that is? Is is because they don’t run or because the white people who vote Republican won’t vote for them.
September 21st, 2009 at 3:53 pm***
there are decent people in this world.
:)
September 21st, 2009 at 3:53 pmThere goes the last Republican with principles.
September 21st, 2009 at 3:55 pm“Rhode Island GOP assemblyman quits party following embarrassment of Wilson’s ‘you lie’ screed.”
Wow, what a shocker. How many more lawmakers in the Republican party will bail out of the USS GOP party? Republican party is now a mental illness. Will be interesting to hear Mike Steele’s response.
September 21st, 2009 at 3:55 pmWonderful, This is what it’s going to take to get the Republicans back from the dark side. They need to speak up and take the not-so-easy steps to get the “GOP” back. They’ve really made a mess of things. Ivan Marte is not a major player but he was a GOP chairman… hopefully it will make a small difference… maybe.
September 21st, 2009 at 3:55 pmI think it’s hopeful.
Better to be a minority Republican than a Republican minority.
Welcome to the side of light, Mr. Marte.
September 21st, 2009 at 3:56 pmPhotons tempting growth
September 21st, 2009 at 3:56 pmIdeas flourish anew
Another man born
Walt you are right about Michael Steele, but you don’t realize that he is an UNCLE TOM. Yes UNCLE TOM, and I’m black so I can say that about him. This man uses racism to his advantage, he enjoys being the token black. It makes him feel special because he’s the only one. I called the RNC the other day and asked why they didn’t have any black elected officials in Washington. They said: “What about Michael Steele”, and I said: But he’s not elected by voters, you guys chose him. Then the person on the other end of the phone was silent. I said: Now do you see my point, that’s why I could never be a Republican. They just pay lip service to diversity, they really want to be a party made up of northern whites who moved away from blacks and southern white who feel the same or worst about minorities. My brother in law is a white Doctor and he told me that he would move his practice to an all white area so he doesn’t have to deal with poor blacks. I told him that he was going to burn in hell for feeling like that, but he’s a Catholic so of course he thinks it’s ok to think like that and he can still go to heaven.
September 21st, 2009 at 4:00 pmRead the link to the letter…
Grammatically speaking, Mr. Marte has some issues.

September 21st, 2009 at 4:04 pmI’m surprised the last straw wasn’t the treatment of Justice Sotomayor, but better late than never. For all we know, that may be why Mel Martinez resigned in Florida, but he kept it to himself.

Also, how many other party leaders does this influence? I’d be willing to bet that there are a few who are sitting on the fence, just waiting for one person to make a stand.
September 21st, 2009 at 4:05 pm21, Crappy,
Anyone with time on their hands to watch Jerry Springer most likely won’t be taken very seriously here, or anywhere else…
Do your parents have Fox blocked?
September 21st, 2009 at 4:06 pmI’m glad that the fog has lifted from Ivan Marte’s mind. He must be a Democrat, he got guts, and guts is enough.
September 21st, 2009 at 4:08 pmGood for him…we can only hope that others will wake up and smell the coffee.
September 21st, 2009 at 4:09 pmWell done!! Unfortunately it is people like him that could have helped bring change from the inside. But, it takes a lot of moral courage to do what he did. I don’t blame him.
I also quit the Repuglian party because of their unabashed hate speech, it does not belong in American public life. Not any more.
September 21st, 2009 at 4:12 pm2.5 seconds before the RNC starts sending out talking points against this guy. He was some kind of liberal un-american muslim domestic terrorist.

Regrettably, you’ll be proven wrong next year. It’s likely that when Hutchison resigns her Senate seat to run for the Governorship full-time, Perry will appoint Michael L. Williams who, in addition to being black, is also so heinously conservative that he’d be entrenched in the Senate for years to come.
Also, way to go, Mr. Marte. Following in the proud footsteps of Lincoln Chaffee: Leaving the party you once loved because it’s become a haven of psychotics and racists.
September 21st, 2009 at 4:28 pmI don’t get why minorities could even be in the Republican party. Republicans are generally hostle to them. Of course there have been a number of black and hispanic Republicans. But I always got the feeling that the only reason they were “allowed” to be Republicans was they were needed as window dressing, so the Repubs didn’t seem so racist. For those black and hispanic Republicans I aways thought it was just a career move, that they would have a better chance in a political career as Republicans rather than as Democrats, and in that sense I can understand it.

So, your mom made it to Maury’s “crack whores who leave 21 yr. old retarded kids to watch Fox News all day” show?
September 21st, 2009 at 4:30 pmOh, I understand now. Cranston isn’t a “who” it’s a “where”. It should have read “…of Cranston, RI,” to avoid ambiguity. I thought they were saying that Marte was saying that about someone named Cranston.
Sorry. I see ambiguity where it isn’t necessarily intended.

September 21st, 2009 at 4:36 pmSlappy,
The first sentence of post 21 is a run on sentence that should be broken up into at least three separate sentences.
Try reading what you have written and break it down into smaller chunks. Then, if you feel it is necessary, you can expand on one of the chunks later.
Basically, you need to proofread your posts, because you type like you think, and you type a chaotic jumble of unrelated thoughts.

September 21st, 2009 at 4:47 pmThis just more people leaving the party because of its composition and leaders. So long as the party leaders embrace the radical right, you can expect to see more Republicans to leave. The radical right thinks the rest of the party that does not share their views are not real Republicans. The party has lost too much in the East, Midwest and West and they are not showing any interest in digging themselves out of this hole.
September 21st, 2009 at 4:49 pmGood for him. Better late than never.
September 21st, 2009 at 5:02 pmThe fall out begins as many have spoken now many will follow. All it takes is one person to stand up as others will follow. I wondered how long Republicans would get away with showing such racism and hate toward Hispanics and Latinos before the fall out came. Now since most Americans don’t speak Spanish you can bet many will be spreading the word as no one will know what their talking about.
September 21st, 2009 at 5:05 pmI always thought white southerners were the stupidest people in the nation – and then you come across a minority republican. Go figure.

September 21st, 2009 at 5:52 pmThe rats are going to start abandoning the sinking ship. Even the wackiest Republicans are now online posting as Independents or Libertarians.
Throughout my entire life, American politics has been stuck with a rigid, two-party system, so I celebrate the disintegration of the Republican Party and look forward to seeing what new party or parties arise from the ashes.
I will even go out on a limb and predict that after the Republicans Party is functionally defunct, the Democratic Party will fracture into Progressive Democrats and Moderate Democrats. I won’t hazzard guess what they might end up calling themselves.

Actually, Rhode Island has quite a few Hispanic people, as well as a large contingent of Portugese (sp?-too lazy to use my spellcheck, sorry!) who might be part of the Hispanic Assembly, as I’ve not heard of a separate one. The fishing and boat construction industries have many ethnic employees.

That would be an interesting development because that would result in 3 parties. Dems, Mod Dems, and the Republican crazies. The Mod Dems would have to sway a lot of independent voters and some of the crazies to be major party. It would certainly make for interesting elections. In fact, the Senate and House would be more like a parliamentary government.

We here can make fun of everyone dumber and less fortunate than us. When did all those people switch to the Republican party?????? Damn they ugly! I can’t even stand thinking about them any more.
