At Values Voter Summit, YAF spokesman defends conservatism: ‘Our women are hot.’
At the Values Voter Summit on Friday, former Miss California Carrie Prejean said that conservatives needed to be “an example” of “tolerance, respect and just how to be civil.” But her advice was ignored the next day when Young America’s Foundation spokesman Jason Mattera addressed a breakout session called “Turning The Tide In Your Generation.” In his comments, Mattera evoked the battle of David against Goliath as a metaphor for conservative college students who are ‘persecuted’ by the big bad liberals who control academia.” While discussing that theme, Mattera took the opportunity to argue for the supremacy of conservatism by saying, “our women are hot“:
During the panel, Mattera took the David and Goliath metaphor another perverse step: If conservatives (David) smite liberals (Goliath), they will be rewarded with the hot conservative women, just like King Saul promised his daughter to the warrior who slew the evil giant. “You know his daughter must have been beautiful because there’s no guy whose gonna die for an ugly girl,” Mattera chortled. “Our women are hot. We have Michelle Malkin. Who does the left have, Rachel Maddow? Sorry, I prefer that my women not look like dudes.”
Reporting for CampusProgress, Sarah Posner points out that Mattera had even more problems with his David and Goliath metaphor: “‘David has the righteous answer,’ Mattera said, ‘because he is taking pride in his Christian beliefs.’ No matter that Mattera didn’t accurately grasp David’s biography or the biblical timeline. In conserva-land, David, a character from the Old Testament, was a Christian even before Christ was born.”

Generally speaking, for there are always individual exceptions, liberals tend to be curious about the world around them. They seek to understand it better and they ask questions to learn why things are the way they are. They enjoy learning things, so it is only natural that liberals are drawn to academia.
Conservatives, generally speaking, are not usually as curious about the world around them. They have no interest in understanding it better and prefer to just be told how it all works. And while it is not impossible that a conservative might seek a career in academia, it is unusual (though there are conservative econmics and law professors.)
Does Mattera not understand this? Does he really think he should be able to go to any college campus and find an equal balance of liberal and conservative professors? Does he really think that colleges should teach both the true aspects of the real world (which would be accused of being liberally biased) and the false interpretations of life, the universe, and everything (which tends to more accurately describe the conservative view of things), and pretend that these two views have equal validity?
It sounds to me like Mattera is upset because reality does not match his view of “The Way Things Ought To Be” (which was ghost written for Rush Limbaugh by John Fund, I believe.)

Wayne, I think another factor is that conservatives tend to be more concerned with income when they are choosing a career, and academia doesn’t really promise the kind of riches for mediocre performance as does, say, Wall Street.
This, I think accounts for much of the conservative bent of the financial trades and the liberal leanings of professions in the arts (and, incidentally, in journalism — real journalism).

September 22nd, 2009 at 9:07 amIt’s difficult to put my feelings into words regarding Jason Mattera. I would say that Jason is a better representative of the evil Goliath than any Liberal I’ve meet. Jason has the qualifications to fill the Goliath role: big, dumb, ugly, and insensitive.
How can one organization have so much stupidity? Aside from the obvious error of thinking David was a Christian, there’s the thorny issue of whether or not David’s arranged wife was physically attractive. Who can tell? If David was as shallow as Jason is, his shallowness would explain Bathsheba. I have always understood his straying was due to be consumed with power.

September 22nd, 2009 at 9:10 amDavid fell in love with Bathsheba when he saw her bathing on her roof, and he so desired her that he “made her pregnant.” It does not say whether she was a willing participant or not. Since she was married, and David was king, it is reasonable to assume that he simply took what he wanted from her.
David was ashamed of what he had done, and when he could not get her husband to come back from war so he would lie with her and would then think that the child was his, he instead arranged for him to be killed in battle so he could have Bathsheba all to himself. David was punished for this action by the death of his and Bathsheba’s child days after birth, and through a curse placed on David’s line.
If this is righteousness in the eyes of conservatives, then a whole slew of questions are answered before they are even asked.
