Sen. Lisa Murkowski proposes amendment to cripple EPA power to curb global warming.

murkowskiSen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) “wants to put the brakes on the Environmental Protection Agency’s efforts to curb climate change” by barring the EPA from “spending any funds on regulating carbon dioxide pollution from power plants, manufacturers, and other major emissions sources.” Murkowski has proposed an amendment to the Interior appropriations bill (H.R. 2996) under consideration this week by the U.S. Senate to prevent the EPA from regulating global warming pollution from stationary sources:

Effective during the 1-year period beginning on the date of enactment of this Act, none of the funds made available for the Environmental Protection Agency under this Act may be expended to regulate or control carbon dioxide from any sources other than a mobile source as described in section 202(a) of the Clean Air Act or to treat carbon dioxide as a pollutant subject to regulation under the Clean Air Act except for purposes of section 10 202(a) of that Act.

As international leaders meet in New York City to discuss a global climate deal, the EPA is moving forward with regulatory proposals. “Murkowski’s amendment would thwart the 2007 Supreme Court ruling that said EPA does have authority under the Clean Air Act to deal with climate pollution,” writes Frank O’Donnell in the Wonk Room. “By trying to block the agency through such a sneaky, back-door approach, Murkowski is bidding to become a climate outlaw.”

What is her justification for such a clearly political proposal?

oh god, you’re going to make them justify them now!!

They will of course say that you are guilty of partisanship.

  7. The Dogfather says:

Maybe this Murkowski EPA-gutting amendment should be further amended to only apply to states that begin with the letter U… Or only to states whose former governor can see Russia from her front porch…

  8. ES says:

hey that’s great we’re going to go ahead and set your super awesome amendment in the trash over there so we don’t lose it.

  9. Marie says:

Do people like her give valid reasons for impeding progress?
They just obstruct for the sake of obstruction.
What does she hope to gain? Oh wait — who has donated to her campaign?

I didn’t want to ask – but good going. aaronk will not be missed.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski proposes amendment to cripple EPA power to curb global warming.

    Good luck with that, Senator.

Say, Senator… remember how, when you guys were in the majority, you had to spend a little time and thought on the amendments you proposed?

You must be so relieved that all you have to do now to justify your salary and your taxpayer-provided health care is to pull something inane out of your butt and call it an amendment, knowing full well that when it fails you can blame it on the “democrat leadership”.

You got it made in the shade, sistah.

  17. Rich H says:

    Ralph,

You got that right when you said “little time and thought…” That about sums it up.

  18. Xisithrus says:

Why does (R)Murkowski hate (R)Nixons EPA?

  19. shoeless says:

Why does Lisa Murkowski want to kill people?

  20. Badger says:

    C’mon … Don’t blame Lisa.

You know the fossil fuel lobbyists write all their Ammendments.

    She’s just the delivery system.

  21. 5th Estate says:

“…or control carbon dioxide from any sources other than a mobile source,

So CO2 that is blown mostly horizontally is BAD, but CO2 blown vertically is GOOD?

I guess its just like the sheep farts causing earthquakes.

Wow, this science stuff is so easy!

  26. pete says:

Stupid and petty? Yep. She’s a GOoPer.

  27. Badger says:

On a more serious note…I think Sen. Murkowski’s back yard of Alaska is Ground Zero for the Climate Change Peril.

Alaskan Permafrost is melting…releasing Greenhouse Gases that have been frozen, and out of the Atmosphere, for millenia.

If this sets off a feedback loop….Game Over.

  28. rsalier says:

Another moronic Repuglican. Is Lisa Mornkowski a climatologist, even a weather girl?? No, of course not. Does she have an inkling of what real scientists are saying about global warming? No, clearly not. The climate changes are real, man made or other wise, it does not matter. If we can do anything to slow it down, then we should. But OH NO, the repuglicans don’t believe it is getting hotter. Stupid, just plain stupid, I guess we need dust bowl conditions again for them to rethink their group stupidity.

  29. Zooey says:

Why do Alaska politicians hate the environment and the Earth?

  30. Winski says:

Murkowski needs to be treated like to clown she is..The folks in Alaska have had to put up with some amazing corruption over the past few years and now one of their senators wants to sell out the state’s environment for a few oil comany checks she may reap in the future..What a scum bag.

  31. Rascalcat says:

The idea came to Sen Murkowski while shooting woves from a helicoptor.

  32. Mike Hunt says:

#27. Badger (and I assume thats from the great Badger state?) you are right on the money. We have lost more than 20,000 acres of wetlands just on Yukon Flats National Wildlife Refuge in recent years from permafrost melt. Once it goes, the water soaks into the muskeg and the wetland is gone. That is on just one small area of the state. Then there is the village of Shishmaref on the Seward Peninsula about 100 or so miles north of Nome. Shishmaref has already had to move twice in recent years because of rising sea level. A third move and the village will have to be abandoned because there is no place else for it to go.

Of course the Repignofascist noise machine could care less about inconvenient facts like this. Its their job to prop up and support big business and the hell with the rest of us who have to live in the sludge they leave behind.

  33. zuch says:

“OK, let’s vote on it. All in favour? All opposed? The nays have it. Amendment fails. Next item…..”

    Cheers,

    Kenneth says:

    Global Warming is a HOAX!

Yeah, right, Kenneth. Tell that to the drowning polar bears, or the residents of Shishmaref Alaska, or the shipping companies that are now able to traverse the Arctic Ocean from Korea to the Netherlands and not be stopped by ice.

Check with Glenn Beck to get your latest talking points, ok?

  36. belaccifer lacca says:

    Kenneth says:
    Global Warming is a HOAX!

Even the EPA has their doubts.

One person at the EPA has doubts, idiot… the report wasn’t ‘quashed’ it just doesn’t speak for the MAJORITY of those who are examining the evidence at the EPA, get it?

  37. belaccifer lacca says:

What’s more Alin Carlin is an analyst with the financial side of the EPA- not a climatologist… I wonder why I take his interpretation with a grain of salt?

  38. pete says:

Go away stupid troll. Once you throw out “HOAX” your credibility is gone beyond redemption.

  40. ralph the wonder llama says:

Belac, why is it that almost without exception, global warming deniers or skeptics turn out to be politically conservative?

I mean, it’s not like science really has a partisan bias (however much we like to joke about it).

I guess it’s because right-wingers are naturally skeptical of anyone who pursues a career in any field that doesn’t seek to maximize profit. Plus, they have a difficult time processing information that contradicts what they already believe.

  41. belaccifer lacca says:

I know, ralph… and as I’ve pointed out before, it’s not like grad. students or unknown climatologists would suppress any data they could uncover that would expose the prevailing scientific thought on this as incorrect…

In fact, if they could do it it would make their careers… like Robert Bakker who argued that most theories about Dinosaur behavior and biology were flawed.

Why can’t deniers see that, I wonder?

  42. pete says:

There are periods of time where the best minds of the World are ignored or condemned. Such periods are called “Dark Ages”. Thankfully it looks like the American Dark Age of the late Twentieth Century is comming to an end. Of course, that frightens the stupid trolls even more.

  43. pete says:

It must really sting that only 6% of scientists polled, including the 35% who call themselves “conservative”, identify themselves as Republicans. That pitiful number is within the margin that could be considered mentally ill.

Smart people are rejecting the Reichwing movement in droves and they can’t handle that truth. They’ll get louder, and more dangerous, for a time but the GOP has been sacrificed to serve as a pen for the most primitive minds in the country.

I don’t pretend to predict the future but, the civilized world is already talking about our country’s fall from the pinnacle of innovation to a hatchery for dolts. But, at least, they are talking about it in the past tense since Chimpy went back to Texas. Heck! There’s even evidence that, outside Oklahoma, our kids is learnin’ again.

  44. nellre says:

We need the ability to sue for malpractice any government official acting in blatant disregard for the the health and wellbeing of the people.

This particular action could result in the the deaths of thousands. Criminal charges should be brought! Negligent homicide … something.

  45. Hoodathunk says:

Oh come on, people. The Republicans have been gutting the government for at least 30 years. Its part of their ‘gubmint is evil and inept’ schtick. Since da gubmint is the only entity that can curtail the rabid profit motive of unregulated capitalism, they hate it and will do whatever it takes to let their corporate buddies have a free shot at things.

  52. Madashellx says:

This is the exactly the kind of crap that I’m sick and tired of hearing and reading about. How is it that people continue to believe that global warming is not happening and that we can continue down the path of ignorance and self indulgence. To completely ignore the signs of the environmental destruction felt world wide is simply moronic. We’ll see how these people change their tune when global economies and governments come crashing down due to the lack of being able to produce the most basic of human needs. Only when money is worthless and social positions mean nothing will people like this look back and say “damn, guess we were wrong…

  53. EugeneDebs says:

    Kenneth

YOU are a stupid brainwashed moron. It must suck to be as stupid as you. You dont know ANYTHING except what you were told to think and ignorant propaganda parrot you are you just regurgitate it as you were programmed to do. Just STFU. You are too stupid to contribute to an adult education

  54. crackbaby says:

Perhaps Ms. Murkowski should also submit an amendment to provide her some food….she’s getting the cobra-haired, anorexic look that afflicts so many of the republican “women”. She should also worry about global warming because it could bake the makeup onto her face like a kiln does to pottery.

She’s a lying POS who doesn’t deserve to be senator. Let’s all hope that this genetic anomaly does not breed; the last thing we need on Earth is another one of these right-wing freak’s spawn.

Why do the good people of Alaska vote for these parasites?

  55. eyesopen says:

From the look of it, the EPA had better do something about that Alaskan water, or whatever it is that the deep thinkers like Murkowski and Palin imbibe.

  56. gunter says:
