Lieberman jokes about running in 2012 as a Republican.

This morning, Politico reported on how some Democratic senators are already preparing for their reelection efforts in 2012, “boosting their campaign coffers, raising millions for an election that is still 37 months away.” In an interview, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) joked that he could potentially run as a Republican:

liebSeveral Senate Democrats up in 2012 have already joined the million-dollar club, including Kent Conrad of North Dakota, Bill Nelson of Florida, Dianne Feinstein of California and Sherrod Brown of Ohio, as well as independent Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut, who caucuses with Senate Democrats. Several more are expected to surpass the million-dollar mark when the latest round of campaign finance reports is released Oct. 15.

Lieberman, who had $1.4 million through June 30, said he was unsure whether he would run in 2012 as a Democrat or an independent.

“Or a Republican,” Lieberman jokingly added. “I have all sorts of options.”

Some Democrats might not find Lieberman’s joke very funny. After Lieberman bucked his party and supported Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) for president — even delivering a speech at the Republican National Convention — some of his Senate colleagues wanted him to be punished, with some suggesting that he should lose his chairmanship of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. Instead, they let him off with slap on the wrist.

Joke LIEberman is about as funny as a double dose of the SWINE flu. And I don’t he likes SWINE.

  2. misscoleopteramolly says:

I think that at this point, the people of Connecticut would be serving their best interests if they just vote Joe out of office, regardless of how he runs.

First, vote against him in whichever party’s primary he runs in, then vote against him when he runs as an independent.

    Just get him out.

What he is saying is that it doesn’t really matter whether he’s a Democrat, Inedependent or Republican, Joe can represent Israel from any party.

  7. fergus says:

DroopyDog is the perfect Republican. Fickle, untrustworthy, backstabbing POS. Why does he even bother to be coy about his affiliation. Typical GOPig, all he needs is the lipstick.

  8. eyeswideopen1 says:

Liberman needs to have ALL his Democratic seniority positions revoked NOW!!!!

  9. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

Joe, you are so funny. Since Mr. Franken gave up his comedy gig, maybe you should give up your “representative” job and try for Al’s old job. Good luck.

Oh, and watch out for that swinging door on the way out.

  11. peterjkraus says:

Every day that goes by, I am more relieved that I did NOT vote for Gore in 2000 because of Lieberman — my thinking was, as was the thinking of countless others of my progressive persuasion, that Lieberman is totally for sale. And beholden to interests contrary to what I believe to be best for the country. So I – we – voted for Ralph Nader.

Sorry, Al, but I’d do it again in a heartbeat. Bush was a catastrophe, but a (possible) President Lieberman is beyond imagination. Which he reinforces every day.

  12. Zooey says:

    Knock yourself out, Joe.

And the first four are simply fluous.

  14. Marie says:

Traitor Joe continues to mock his supporters no matter from which camp.
Nothing makes people more angry than to have been played a fool and Traitor Joe has done that nationwide to Dems and repugs. I hope that the Connecticut voters run him out of office next time – I’d like to see him go down in ignominy.

  15. Anonymouse says:

Lieberman is waiting to see the results of the midterms – if the Republicans take back the Senate, my bet is that he’ll jump on their backs. He’s certainly no more liberal than Senator Snowe.

  16. Jackie says:

Liberman is more corrupt the the most Law Makers. Now if Liberman does get Karl Rove to fix the 2012 election and he wins we will be renaming the USA to read The United States of Israel. At which time President Liberman will be invading Iran, Syria, Egypt, Joran and even the Saudis to take all of the Middle East land and oil. Yes Israel will be able to use not only the US money but all the weapons to in George W. Bush’s words TAKE OVER THE WORLD AS ISRAEL IS THE CHOSEN PEOPLE. More then likley we’ll hear it was God’s wish and we should all be greatful and hail Israel. No need for a United Nations. It could happen as the US Christians believed Bush when he said God said he wanted him to be President and gave him directions to illegally invade Iraq and kill 1 million Iraq people as they slept and displaced millions by lying about WMD and the famous Mushroom Cloud story.

  17. texasrick says:

Good riddance you “Mousey little man”.
Most of us never really trusted you anyhow!

I hope we have a replacement candidate lined up to unseat him.

  18. Xisithrus says:

There should be a law that campaign donations can be made only when they candidate is up for relection. This 24/7/365 campaign donating is corrosive to democracy.

  19. Fred says:

I’m with misscoleopteramolly, give him options, just not the ones he’s counting on.

  20. RationalRadioJett says:

Joe will be lucky if he can get the gig of cleaning up the horse shit from the touring production of Fiddler On The Roof.

  21. mary lacewing says:

I was hoping the Joe would retire (how old is he anyway?) but it doesn’t sound like it.

Hopefully the Democratic Party will support whoever his opponent is this time, unlike during the last election.

  22. tombaker says:

The more the merrier, droopy. Knock yourself out.

The R ticket’s going to be split more ways than a banana peel, and I can not wait to see the fur fly when their “frontrunners” square off against one another.

  23. frankdolce says:

Its frickin’ joke for Pete’s sake – I’m no fan of Lieberman but must we throw brickbats at every thing?

Think Progress is getting to be neither – lets make it about Thinking and Progress again instead of stooping to play “gotcha” on every little thing. Let’s concentrate on the big issues like globalization, corporate welfare, health care, and exposing the military-industrial complex and the apartheid regime in Israel etc. instead of what the lunatic fringe is saying. Jeez Louise guys. This is why the center has tuned us out because we’re too busy playing the inside game instead of debating the real issues.

  24. MapleStreet says:

What is the sentiment in Connecticut regarding Lieberman ?

Have they had it with him ?

  25. House of Roberts says:

Assuming The Dems could still control the Senate after 2012, Joe could win as a Republican and Harry Reid would STILL let him chair his committees. Harry is the problem, Joe is just being Joe. He sold out to the Bush Admin. to keep New London off the BRAC

  26. aquarius2 says:

Isn’t it about time to kick this “it” person out of office? He is nothing, neither Dem or Repub, just a greedy politician that couldn’t make a living without his perks of office.

  27. Fred says:

actually, joe might sound “fairly” reasonable compared to the other leaders of the gop these days. He might actually have a chance if the party survives.

  28. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

It’s a frickin’ light-weight thread for Pete’s sake. Do we have to be deadly serious on every post on every thread every day? How about we enjoy the journey a little bit while we tackly the big issues? I think we are capable of multitasking.

  29. tombaker says:

    Joe’s the joke, Frank.

    No one’s misunderstanding his quote.

Why is Joe joking around, rather than earning his paycheck in the Senate?

  30. ralph the wonder llama says:

    Thanks for your concern, frankdolce.

We’ll give your thoughts the consideration they deserve.

  31. Rich H says:

I like your options too Joe. Now be a good boy and go pursue them.

  32. A Patriot Acting says:

frankdolce you are welcome to leave and never come back if you like. Me, I find it important to keep track of turncoats like Joe Lieberman. He does not help progressive interests and more often than not can be a roadblock to legislation. I am glad that TP brings these stories to our attention and don’t see postings like this as a problem. Lieberman should be ashamed of himself for the way he behaved during the Presidential elections last year. He has and always will be a self-serving hack and I will not miss him when and if he loses his re-election.

  33. mary lacewing says:

    Sept. 17th:

Do you approve or disapprove of the way Joe Lieberman is handling his job as United States Senator?

    Disapprove—-45—–26——60——42

Hope my little technique to try to line things up didn’t just look like a mess.

My point is that the Democrats need to support whoever is running against Joe Lieberman!!

  34. ElBruce says:

Lieberman is an Independent, not a Democrat. After Ned Lamont beat him in the primary, and the Democrats of Connecticut completely rejected him, he slipped in as an Independent before the general electorate of Connecticut realized the extent of his betrayal.

There’s simply no way he could run as a Democrat next time, and running as an Independent would only split the vote for him between him and whoever was trying to run as a Republican. He’d actually be much better off running as a Republican. And it would be more honest anyways. Mind you, he’s going to lose no matter what he does, but we might as well have some truth in advertising before then.

My wife was listening to the radion this morning – a chinese station in L.A. – which are all horribly right wing by the way.

She heard a story about some highest level democrat being sentenced to prison this morning for defrauding some banks out of tens of millions of dollars.

Is this station worse than fox news, or is it possible something happened I heard nothing about?

  36. LiberalLinebacker says:

Nothing funny here. McCain was going to be Kerry’s running mate and backed out at the last minute. Yet we are supposed to believe big government Dems are any different from big government Repubs. They dance to the song of the same master and are traitors to the American people.

There are so few liberals left in the Democratic Party, the so called Progressives are the same type of infestation that the Republican party witnessed with the Neocons.

  37. mary lacewing says:

A lot can happen between now and 2012. If Israel attacks Iran (which would be with Joe’s blessing I am sure) for example, that could change things dramatically. Because the U.S. would probably be

Ed Lamont ran on an anti-war platform at a time when ‘patriotism’ was still running high and he had no name recognition. Plus, Joe used some dirty tricks and in fact pulled one out on the day of the primary saying that Lamont’s supporters had pulled his web site down. They had done no such thing of course.

Between all of that AND the millions that Republicans poured into Joe’s campaign after deserting their own candidate it was surprising that Ned came in as close as he did to Joe L.

It’s official. Joe Lieberman and his 2006 campaign staff were either incompetent, dishonest, or both. link

  38. ralph the wonder llama says:

Rich H, I think what you’re hearing about is a top fundraiser for democrats, not a Democratic official, being charged in a multimillion-dollar ponzi scheme.

    TPM is all over it.

  39. LiberalLinebacker says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if Israel attacked Syria fist.

  40. Rich H says:

Thanks Ralph, I hadn’t hear anything and I’m going to read you link now.

  41. ralph the wonder llama says:

LiberalLinebacker, given that your, shall we say, idiosyncratic definition of “liberal” is somewhat at odds with the current conventional definition of the term, your pejorative assessment of the “Progressives” might be easily dismissed as the partisan ramblings of an undercover conservative.

  43. lefty says:

I can only tell you what he’s NOT going to run as: his actual self.

  44. Virtual Pebble says:

Joe’s a joke, all right, but not a funny one, and this proposed punch line ought to get his ticket punched and his very own self thrown off the train. He’s not a Republican though, he’s a shitbird opportunist.

  45. Xisithrus says:

I dunno, seems to me D 34% approve is a higher number than R 64% approve.

One poll claimed that 23% of Americans IDed with being a R [maybe it was conservative] anyway thats about 69 million people.

The other 77%, or about 321 million, IDed with other groups.

So the 23% group is quite a bit smaller at 69 million

    I know, I know not all 300mil vote… =P

It may seem like more R’s approve of Joe than D’s approve of him, but I dont think thats the case here.

Ennyhoot, I think Joes hedging his bet.

IF he decides to run as a Republican then all I can tell you is that Reetthuggs do not win Senate seats in CT.

You know, I can’t stand Lieberman as much as the next guy, but I’m guessing that there are about a million Iraqis and more than 4,000 American soldiers staring up from the ground who would have an argument with you about that. But, this is the most creative excuse I’ve ever heard a clueless lefty make for voting Nader.

Green Morons: nothing will ever change the fact that you allowed yourselves to be duped into believing there were no differences between war criminal GW Bush and Nobel Prize winner Al Gore! Nothing!

The joke part is not that Lieberman is a Republican. That fact is obvious. The fact that he is idiotic enough to be a Republican presidential candidate cannot be denied.

ctcadguy, as another registered Democrat in CT, does your comment mean that you voted for Joe in 2006? I hope you weren’t seduced by Joe’s statements made during the campaign. I saw Joe weasel his way around questions put to him when he visited the Windsor DTC in early 2006. I wasn’t able to work on Lamont’s primary effort, but once he was running in the general election I expended time and treasure on his campaign. I just wish Obama had had the courage to come to CT to block Lieberman’s charges against Lamont and to energize voters in the downstate cities, where turnout was particularly sad in 2006.
