DeMint: Obama ‘Puts Our Troops At Risk’ By Working On Health Reform

The Washington Post reported this week that Gen. Stanley McChyrstal, the top commander in Afghanistan, has recommended that more U.S. troops be sent there or the conflict will “likely result in failure.” However, the Obama administration is currently reviewing its overall Afghanistan strategy before anymore troops are deployed.

On ABC’s Top Line today, Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) attacked Obama. “A lot of us are concerned that the President is putting off listening to the recommendations from his generals because he’s getting so much pressure from the left,” DeMint complained. When host David Chalian noted that Obama simply “wants to make sure that the resources are there to fit the strategy,” DeMint accused Obama of abandoning Afghanistan to focus on health care, which DeMint suggested is not a priority for the country:

DEMINT: The problem is, the war in Afghanistan and our economy are our two biggest issues. But he’s working on other issues such as health care and he’s putting off the decision on Afghanistan which I think puts our troops at risk. So he needs to focus on priorities right now and not try to ram so many things down our throat here in Congress. He needs to address the issue of Afghanistan quickly.

Watch it:

DeMint’s belief that reforming health care is not a priority puts him out of step with the rest of the country. In fact, numerous polls conducted recently show health care (next to the economy) as a top priority for most Americans.

But also, the Obama administration is focused on Afghanistan. “I think that what we have to do is get the right strategy,” Obama said on Sunday. The “strategy” for war hawks like DeMint is easy because the answer is always to simply send more troops. However, the Obama administration appears to be taking a more thoughtful approach. The New York Times reports today that Obama and his top defense advisers have been “chewing over the problem”:

The sweeping reassessment has been prompted by deteriorating conditions on the ground, the messy and still unsettled outcome of the Afghan elections and a dire report by Mr. Obama’s new commander, Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal. Aides said the president wanted to examine whether the strategy he unveiled in March was still the best approach and whether it could work with the extra combat forces General McChrystal wants.

“President Obama has made it clear that the Afghanistan theater should be our top military priority,” said Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who takes the lead on the administration’s defense issues (while other administration officials, like Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebilius, tackle health care).

Apparently to DeMint, taking the time to get the strategy right means abandoning the problem.

Unlike yourself, the president has not only the reputation but the obvious ability to chew gum, speak and walk all at the same time as well as keeping a number of issues in mind!! Go and crawl back under your repuglian rock and stop lying about every thing. On the other hand, keep lying we are wise to you.

He’s right. Healthcare needs to take a backseat to the war and the economy. Does obama care about a few people who can’t afford health insurance more than our troops and the massive number of unemployed?

As noted above, Presidents are expected to be able to focus on more than one issue at a time. There is never one single issue that should preoccupy a President–unlike the last one with his obsession with The Global War on Terra.

President Obama is acting, uh, presidential.

As a wise man once said, “a President should be able to do more than one thing at a time.” Ours can. Nobody said he doesn’t take some time each day to deal with war issues. Congress is the only one with most of their time tied up with health care right now. So what specific things do you think Congress should be doing regarding Afghanistan?

Also, fixing health care will have a huge positive impact on the economy.

You know what would help the troops? Stop paying Halliburton to rip them off, charging exorbitant amounts of money for services the military can do itself. Those little chores are a great way to beat boredom and bind the troops socially in a shared living arrangement. Poisoning and electrocuting the troops doesn’t help, either. That money could be spent on armor, faster troop rotations, and more leave time.

And stop paying mercenaries to offend the local populations, bringing blowback to the troops.

1 million troops ( served) who have government ‘health care’ = ?
Do you think the 39 million people who now draw Food Stamps can afford health insurance? (UP by about 8 million since 2000).

Here we go again with the textbook neoconservative strategy. When Obama doesn’t make the decisions which they want him to make and think he should he make when they want him to make them, it’s not enough for them to accuse him of having poor judgment (never mind simply disagreeing with him in a respectful manner) — they refuse to be content with anything less than the utmost possible extreme of claiming that Obama is attacking/betraying/destroying/endangering this country. Make no mistake — this is being done deliberately and for no reason other than malice for the sake of political gain.

  53. Oval12345678 aka James K. Sayre says:

If you are my age (67 years), and you have paid close attention to American history and international politics for the last half century, you have probably noticed that Imperial America, with military troops and military bases currently in over one hundred countries around the world, always seems to have “enemies” and reasons to be killing foreigners, overthrowing democracies, supporting right-wing dictators, torturing, and stopping social progress in third world countries. Is this a trend, do you think?

Actually, we have been intervening in a hostile way in third world countries for over a century now; President William McKinley formally launched American overseas colonialism in 1898 in the “Spanish-American War.” The Filipinos probably had another name for it, something akin to the “Changing Colonial Masters War.” The Philippines were switched from being a Spanish colony to being an American colony. And we have been pulling this imperial intervene crap, off and on, ever since in the Caribbean, Central America, South America, Africa, and Asia.

It is time to end the American Imperial Empire. Get out of Afghanistan and Iraq for starters…

Ooh, good catch! That angle hadn’t occurred to me, but I guess I should have known. I bet there are plenty of things DeMint has done that endangers troops.

Not to mention the rest of us…

In early March 2007, the Senate began debate on a security bill (S.4) similar to the one passed by the House. The Senate legislation would drop House-passed provisions that would require that all containers on U.S.-bound vessels be screened in foreign ports for radiation, and all cargo loaded onto U.S. airliners be screened for explosives.

Why would he allow us to be potentially dirty-bombed by terrorists? Because otherwise airport screeners might be allowed to unionize. And Republicans don’t like unions. Think about that the next time he bloviates about who’s putting who at risk and why.

We don’t have any good paying jobs, yet we whine to the blue states that support us about free-murkets and low taxes. None of those platitudes have ever worked much for us, but we expect you do abide by it. He’s right. Healthcare needs to take a backseat to the war and the economy. Does obama care about a few people who can’t afford health insurance more than our troops and the massive number of unemployed?

I’m glad you brought that up. We’ve gone to such bizarre lengths as party, massively screwing everything up and then laying out an unrealistic timetable on those brought in to clean it up. It’s not as if we care to see anything cleaned up – if we deny the resources, nominees and treat the severity of the mess as a quick-fixer, we can can slow this thing down long enough to turn around and claim they aren’t moving fast enough. So far, it seems to be working.

We can pass ourselves off as recovery experts, and maybe people will forget we bombed everything in the first place and vote us back to power. The power … is tastaaay!

  104. OutstandingInMyField says:

Kenneth, I’m thinking I’m tired of presidents, and other politicians, who make decisions solely to save their butts. What is it the GOPers say as the equivocate about health reform? We need it right more than we need it right now. While failure to act on either Afghanistan or health care costs lives, and one could legitimately argue for caution in both cases, the conservative sector has long since lost all credability on Afghanistan, a war they neglected for nearly eight years. Even now, you can’t decide between “it’s Obama’s Vietnam, look you liberals, he’s still in this war”, and “we need to throw more money and materiel at this war so that no defense contractor will be left behind”. Give it up already, we will support more troops to Afghanistan if we believe it supports our national interest, and we applaud a president thoughtful enough to ask questions and consider the overall strategy.

@ 53. Oval12345678 aka James K. Is this a trend, do you think?

Actually, we have been intervening in a hostile way in third world countries for over a century now; President William McKinley formally launched American overseas colonialism in 1898 in the “Spanish-American War.” …. September 23rd, 2009 at 9:26 pm

Pretty good point, Mr. Sayre. The process of extraterritorial imperialism and colonialism may have started in 1898 due to the closing of the ‘frontier’ and the end of internal imperialism, aka, the Indian Wars of the 1870s and 1880s.

  140. mari2RR says:

I would feel a bit better about DeMint’s comment if my own party had any credibility about Iraq after the dismal stupidity of President Bush. The people or more particularly the leader of the group that brought us the 9/11 bombing was in Afghanistan. If Bush had concentrated on Afghanistan instead of pulling so many troops from there to fight in Iraq (that had nothing to do with the crime of 9/11) the probability of success would have been good. But alas, for some psychological game he had going to try to outshine his father, this mess goes on and on. And the perps have not been apprehended and then tried in the correct court venue and no sentence has been carried out. As a Republican myself, one of the thing that shames me about our party is that Bush has gotten a pass from Republicans for this horrible un-American behavior. I for one want a thoughtful and systematic review of the war in Afghanistan with a clearer goal and then send enough troops to carry out this new, thoughtful mission. Only then can Republicans ever feel like we did our job regarding the terrible errors of judgment we allowed G. W. Bush to push for so many years.

  143. Perry logan says:

Behind all of this is the fact that American-style conservatism is inimical to public health.

The Right are in fatal denial of our mutual interconnectedness–especially in a hi-tech, densely-populated society. They want to pretend the Indistrial Revolution never happened. To these folks (mostly white males), the bell tolls for ME.

This is why conservative governance is so catastrophic to public health. Mark my words–we are going to start hearing some seriously bad news on the public-health front.

Recent example: our infant mortality rate–which is nothing to brag about–reached an all-time low under Bill Clinton. But when the Republicans got into control, the infant mortality rate started to go up for the first time inb 40 years.

So it’s literally true: when Republicans get in power, the babies start to die.

I think this matter is quite simple. Regardless of the issue, the Republicans will claim that some other issue takes priority. Regardless of the alacrity with which an issue is being addressed, the Republicans will say that the issue should be dealt with faster or slower, and then say that something else is more important. It’s simple parliamentry obstructionism, sabotage, and misdirection. The only tool they have is stirring the shit and hoping some of it rises up and hits the fan; they don’t have the votes to loft it on their own.

And I still thing JDemento and fern nado should hie off to A’stan if they’re so fracking concerned. They didn’t seem to much give a rat’s arse until they had to rummage around for a distractive talking point.

  159. Virtual Pebble says:

Not that he has his troops under control, anyway, as demonstrated by their pronounced lack of civility and competence; they seem to do well with disruption and screwing the pooch but that doesn’t do much for advancing our great nation’s interest, or the interests of her citizens.

  163. mari2RR says:

So what. Senator DeMint. We already know that you are a far right ideologue and that anyth8ing that the President suggests is not acceptable. As a Republican, I only wish you would have been so vocal during the long, disgusting GW Bush years. nly then would you have been credible now. Bush has ruined our party’s brand and all the cover up by Republicans like you only makes the matter far worse. If you are such a party ideologue, I cannot trust you to insist on what is best for our nation. Also now, one has to wonder if all your bleating is tinged by a large dose of racism. Who knows? Hmmm could be just party first and the good of our country be darned!

  164. mari2RR says:

As a retired RN who was a supervisor in a huge Sate of Texas hospital, I can tell this politician that if the House and Senate do not pass this health care reform, our most vulnerable children and some adults will continue to use services for preventable problems at the late stage of their illnesses by presenting themselves at a hospital emergency room. This is the most expensive treatment entry level that exists in the medical field and may be more expensive due to a highly developed illness or medical problem. Not only is this a fact, but outcomes are far more likely to be much less effective due to the later intervention dates. This plan is a false savings idea and it simply increases costs of treating diseases, including increased time off if the person is employed. This sort of late intervention drastically increases the cost of intervention and the cost of lost work time for the patient. Besides, Obama is so bright and his intelligence so remarkable he can do both things simultaneously, unlike G W Bush.

@ 176. mari2RR says: … Obama is so bright and his intelligence so remarkable he can do both things simultaneously, unlike G W Bush. September 25th, 2009 at 2:24 am

Yes, isn’t it great that we’ve elected someone who can walk and chew gum, or walk and twiddle the forbidden BlackBerry, or walk and think, at the same time. I haven’t figured out why the guys that can do that are mostly Democrats while the Republicans seem to put people forward who have trouble with velcro closures, but all that isn’t exactly to the point, is it?

Per a previous comment of mine, Senator Demento is just trying to stop any forward movement on anything. Yes, the health care insurance reform bill is important, as are a number of other issues. President Obama is capable of balancing all of those; that’s why he has a Cabinet with Departmental Secretaries and all those ‘czars’. We can be absolutely certain that the Repubs and reactionaries will disagree heartily and nastily with whatever time and interest President Obama uses to address any of our great nation’s issues.
