Mt. Vernon city council distances itself from mayor’s ‘Glenn Beck Day.’
On September 26, Bud Norris, the mayor of Mt. Vernon, WA, will award the ceremonial key to the city to Glenn Beck, who grew up there. Norris’ decision to declare “Glenn Beck Day” has led to demonstrations “on the streets and in city council meetings over the conservative commentator’s visit.” Last night, the city council voted unanimously to distance itself from honoring Beck:
On Wednesday night, the City Council of this town of 32,000 distanced itself from Mayor Bud Norris, who plans to give the keys to the city to talk-show personality Glenn Beck on Saturday.
The seven-member council unanimously passed a resolution proposed by member Dale Ragan that stated, “Mount Vernon City Council is in no way sponsoring the Mayor’s event on September 26, 2009 and is not connected to the Glenn Beck event in any manner.”
The resolution came after two dozen people who had signed up for the public-comment part of the session spoke in often emotional language to oppose honoring the controversial talk-show host.

and beck grew up there – just like that intern guy who used to be on jay leno.
on balance, the honor is proportional to beck’s significance.
i’m sure the overwhelming majority of folks from up that way will be on hand to let him know how they really feel about his visit.

The impression he gave was most of the people from Mt. Vernon were pretty pissed off.

The ratings of “FOX News” shows compared to actual news shows are immaterial because “FOX News” doesn’t do news. You might as well compare them to any other entertainment show. Compared to other non-news entertainment shows, their ratings aren’t that good.
Actual news has never had great ratings. And shows that adhere to actual news don’t today.
For example, Sept 14-20, “NCIS” on CBS had 12.44 million viewers. That’s way more than any show on FAUX News. What does my comparison prove? Nothing. What do Pat Pomery’s ratings citations prove? Nothing.

If you look at the long term forecast in the second box, you will see that O’Reilly is on the decline while Olbermann is trending up. The weekly or monthly ratings don’t really give the big picture until you chart them over a long period of time.

Clearly, our winger friends believe the presumed popularity of Glenn, Rush, Ann, Michelle, and company proves that America is a right-wing country which wants nothing more than to hear liberals and Democrats bashed day and night. But it just ain’t so.
Ignornig the fact that a vast majority of human beings disagree with Glenn Beck on everything, we shjould keep in mind the airwaves are not inundated with right-wing swill because the people are clamoring for it, but because the bad guys own the radio stations. It’s as simple as that.
Secondly, polls show that less than half of the audiences for these shows identify themselves as conservatives.
This is truly funny. It means the hate jocks are performing to an audience, most of whom disagree with them.
Hate radio hosts are not spewing to a vast nation of the converted. They are dancing bears.

The shows on “FOX News” are not news. Comparing them to news shows is meaningless. It wouldn’t matter if MSNBC consistently scored much higher than “FOX News” shows, because they’re not both cable TV news channels, only MSNBC is one.

Sorry, but Glenn Beck does dominate the five PM slot and has a much larger viewership share than Keith Olbermann. However, anyone who says he is the number one-watched cable news show – or the number one show on cable – is either a bonafide liar. Heck, Spongebob Squarepants averages more viewers than Glenn Beck does.
