Beck Refuses To Define What He Meant By The Phrase ‘White Culture’: ‘Ummmmm, I Don’t Know’

In July, Fox News’ radical host Glenn Beck called President Obama a “racist,” saying that he “has a deap-seated hatred for white people, or white culture” — a comment that sparked a successful advertising boycott of his Fox News program. This week in an interview with CBS News’ Katie Couric, Beck said he was “sorry” for the way he “phrased” the claim, but still contended that it’s a “serious question” as to whether Obama is a racist.

During the interview, Couric posed a question from a Twitter user who wanted to know what Beck meant by “white culture” in his attack on Obama. Beck responded by stuttering: “Ummmmm, I don’t know.” He then suggested that he had already answered the criticism on his website, and therefore didn’t want to “make news” by responding to Couric.

“Can you explain what you mean by the white culture?” Couric insisted, “because some people say that sounds kind of racist.” Beck complained that he shouldn’t be the “target” for “asking” if Obama is a racist. Then he turned snarky as Couric persisted with her line of questioning:

COURIC: People just want to know. What is white culture?

BECK: I’m going to see if I can play your game. People just want to know.

COURIC: You know, well, [Twitter questioner] Adrian wants to know.

BECK: That’s good for Adrian.

When Beck said that he’s “not going to get into your soundbite gotcha game,” Couric noted that the interview would be “completely unedited so if you felt like you wanted to explain it, you have all the time in the world.” But Beck still wouldn’t give an answer. Couric gave Beck a final opportunity to disavow his view that Obama is a “racist,” but Beck just dug in:

COURIC: But basically, you stand behind your assertion that in your view, President Obama is a racist.

BECK: I believe that Americans should ask themselves tough questions. Americans should turn over all the rocks and make their own decisions.

Watch it:

So what did Beck mean by “white culture”? A Google search of his website and a Lexis/Nexis search of the transcripts from his Fox News program found no evidence that Beck addressed its meaning.

Transcript:

COURIC: A twitter question is, adrianinflorida: what do you mean by white culture?

BECK: Um, I, I don’t…

COURIC: You said he had a deep-seated hatred for the white culture, what is that? What is the white culture?

BECK: I guess it’s…gosh. I’m so tempted to make news here today.

COURIC: No no, I’m just curious, this was actually adrianinflorida.

BECK: What to do? What to do? Adrian, Go to glennbeck.com. Listen to it. You can hear all of it.

COURIC: No, but you didn’t really address white culture, I think, in your explanation about President Obama, I haven’t seen the whole show, but can you? Just for our purposes?

BECK: Just for your purposes? So this will be a little secret between us?

COURIC: No, for this show, can you explain what you mean by the white culture? Because some people say that sounds kind of racist.

BECK: Really? It’s amazing to me that, for the first time, I think in history somebody can ask a question and say, “Don’t you think that maybe we have several pieces here?” We have several pieces; George Bush says my grandmother was a typical African-American that had, that had her views bred into her. You don’t think maybe we would ask questions about that comment? How is it that the first time I think in history, you should check on it, somebody says, “Hey. There’s some red flags here maybe we should look at?” … How am I? How am I the target for asking questions?

COURIC: People just want to know. What is white culture?

BECK: I’m going to see if I can play your game. People just want to know.

COURIC: You know, well, Adrian wants to know.

BECK: That’s good for Adrian.

COURIC: No but I mean it’s fine if you make a statement though, shouldn’t you be able to defend exactly what you mean by it. I’m not –

BECK: Katie, how many times have you said, how many times have you said something where you’re like, “I didn’t think. What’s white culture? I don’t know. What’s the white culture?”

What? What is the white culture? I don’t know how to answer that that’s not a trap.

COURIC: Mhmm.

BECK: You know what I mean?

COURIC: Yeah I’m not, I’m just, I’m not trying to trap you, I’m just, I think people wanted to know what that meant exactly.

BECK: Well we know Adrian does.

COURIC: Yeah, and you’re not going to answer her?

BECK: I’m not going to get into your sound bite gotcha game which we already are. We already are.

COURIC: No we’re actually, this is completely unedited so if you felt like you wanted to explain it, you have all the time in the world.

BECK: Mhmm.

COURIC: No? Don’t want to go there?

BECK: Nope.

COURIC: But basically, you stand behind your assertion that in your view, President Obama is a racist.

BECK: I believe that Americans should ask themselves tough questions. Americans should turn over all the rocks and make their own decisions.

I mean, the last thing we’d want is any tie to that nasty freedom-hating French culture, or that colonializing imperialist British culture, or that genocidal culture out of Germany, or any of those other ‘roll over and loose’ cultures from the ‘old country’, right?

But he refused to answer Couric’s question.

So there’s a “right to ask,” but no no “right” for an answer?

There’s an old legal expression to the effect that “there is no right without a remedy:” Ubi jus ibi remedium.

Thus, it appears to me that Beck claims a right for himself but refuses to grant that right to others.

  58. ElBruce says:

BECK: I believe that Americans should ask themselves tough questions. Americans should turn over all the rocks and make their own decisions.

Classic ditch ‘n dive maneuver when you’ve been called out in impossible BS.

The thing is, it would have been possible to answer the question in terms of normative culture, the American “melting pot” concept, etc. He could have said that what is today commonly referred to as “white culture” might have been called “English culture” a century ago, when immigration was primarily coming from other European countries. He could have gone on to say that he looks forward to the day when that term is no longer commonly in use because African-Americans will be fully viewed as culturally integrated, but since the phrase “white culture” is still used by many of his viewers he uses it to communicate clearly. He could have thrown in that he’s against multiculturalism and believes in an ongoing process of integration into the American normative culture. That is, he could have said those things if he actually knew anything about race in America, history, multiculturalism, or sociology in general.

There is simply no point in putting such ignorant people on TV at all. There are plenty of hobos living under bridges who you could shave, put into a suit, put ‘em on the air, and they’d be able to give more educated and informed analysis than the current crop of people working at FAUX.

    .

    TedKennedysGhost says:

If White culture is a not easily definable phrase, then the same must go for Black culture.

Not necessarily. If you really look at what they call “white culture,” the only thing that holds up is historical roots in specific regions of Europe, as divided by millenia of linguistic, religous, political and cultural differences. There’s celtic culture, germanic culture, frankish culture, etc. African-Americans don’t really carry over regional African differences nearly as much. The history of slavery in America has basically melted them together and forged a new culture, one which never before existed. So I think one could say that there is a “black culture.” However, what we call “white” is really a loose amalgam of many cultures throughout the world.

I can’t believe the media did not accurately cover the 1.5 million man tax protest in Washington a few weeks back.

Here is an explanation of how the crowd count given by the D.C. Fire Department of 60,000 – 70,000 people was inflated by liars to 1,000,000 – 1,500,000 people, and then to 2,000,000 people (wingnut rounding error). One of the organizers lied about what ABC reported the DCFD’s count as. That’s how we know it is a lie; if they just wanted a big number, they could have done their own estimate. But they literally claimed that was the DCFD’s count. Which was a lie. A lie you have repeated just now.

Regarding the notion that the media did not cover the 9/12 march, FAUX News took out a full page ad to make the same claim. Here is the response by Rick Sanchez where he clearly documents the extensive coverage that all of the televised news organizations gave to the event. The claim that the media did not cover it was a lie. A lie you have repeated just now.

Do you see a pattern forming here?

The exact same should be said about Micheal Moore. Do you not agree?

Not really. I could picture a world in which Moore had lots of rabid followers who were afraid of mainstream America while pretending to love it. It’s not a big stretch of imagination. But generally, people don’t get as fired up about what he says as he might like them to. Have you seen any of his movies? Of course you haven’t. They’re more informative than rabble-rousing. The emotive connotation is only enough to possibly change your perspective on the facts presented. But not nearly enough to arouse one to any form of action.

The thing is, there really isn’t any comparison on the left to the extremism on the right. It was not always so. During the very late 60’s to early 70’s, the left wing in America was every bit as kooky as the right wing is becoming today, and it was the right wing’s job to keep their heads and try to maintain order and reason. You had the Weather Underground, the Symbionese Liberation Army, and the “scary” era of the Black Panthers running around. Leftists were bombing things, robbing banks and yelling about violent overthrow of the government all the time. But that was a long, long time ago. Today we’re the rational ones, and now it’s yall’s turns to take a joyride on the crazy train.

So, if he is coddling up to these crazies, he is not better then them. Scary thought that he has a TV program where he can express his “tendencies” to supporting such elements.

There is NO Black culture, or White culture or Ethnic Culture in the US. There is a melding of many different life ways and cultural adaptations which make up the American Culture. Every new immigrant, every immigrant community melts into our melting pot each adding their own flavor and style to the broader American Culture.

So, Mr. Beck, if you want to be a white supremacist, that is fine and your are entitled to your ways and beliefs. Just don’t try to foist them off on the rest of us as being mainstream or even “normal”.

  164. Bluestocking says:

So let’s see if I’ve got this right…

First, Beck tried to claim that he doesn’t understand what the words he himself chose to use mean or why he said them. That’s crap, pure and simple. Make no mistake…Beck knows very well that answering Couric’s questions publicly and truthfully could be very damaging both to himself and the network which employs him.

Beck clearly doesn’t regret or see anything wrong what he said, which means that the only thing he’s “sorry” about is the fact that he’s being asked to face the consequences for what he chose to say…but aren’t people like him the ones who are always pontificating on the importance of “taking personal responsibility”?? He might not want to acknowledge (possibly not even to himself) precisely what he meant when he chose to use the words “white culture” — but people never use words without having at least some idea of what they’re trying to convey by them, even if their definition of those words is incorrect. The only reason why Beck got snarky with Couric is because he knew that she had him backed into a corner. While there might not have been any way that she could have forced him to answer honestly on camera, his only other option was to be blatantly evasive.

Oh, and just for the record…am I the only one who sees it as unbelievably ironic that Beck should use the phrase “white culture” while accusing Obama of racism. In my opinion and experience, many of the people who make a habit of using that phrase in that particular context are white supremacists — who are not only racists, but frequently intolerant of other religions and ethnic groups as well. In that context, “white culture” usually doesn’t simply mean Caucasians — while this may have changed somewhat with the times, it has historically usually been used to refer very specifically to Caucasians of Protestant Northern European descent.

The problem with that theory is that everyone knows that conservatives don’t get humor. It’s why so many of you thought that Colbert was real.

  203. Fred says:

Oh but yes they do have the tools! And they are not violent people. Didnt you see the signs at Becks 9/12 rally? “We came unarmed. This time.” See? Unarmed = peaceful
    /snark

  205. pbeeg says:

There’s no such thing as white culture because ‘white’ is not an ethnic group–it’s defined by what it’s not-black.
You can talk about Italian culture, or Irish culture, or Russianculture, or Spanish culture–but white culture? A feast of lutefisk and borscht and dolmades and corned beef in a béchamel sauce?
No European would sit still for a characterization that lumps all those traditions together, and would assume–correctly–that the only folks who would use that caegory is someone who know nothing about any of the real traditions.
It’s the same people who invoke the triumph of White European culture who squeal at being exposed to Spanish–the language of Cervanted, Lope de Vega and Calderón.
Our religions are Semitic–our classical civilization was preserved for us by the Arabs–and the most important Christian theologian was an Afrocan. And myfather’s cultural traditiion, Pushkin and Tchaikovsky and Tolstoy–was not considered ‘white.’
And in America, our foodstuffs–good old fashioned potatoes and tomatoes and corn on the cob–are not European. Cowboy culture is Mexican culture–what’s more American than a rodeo? And of course now we have a new generation of bigots who still want their rock and roll.
If there is a white culture, most Americans are pig-ignorant of it. They only take it out of the attic when it’s time to how how much better they are than brown people. But they wouldn’t know Marlowe from Wordsworth, or Scarlatti from Scriabin, and would bolt in a sweat from a performance of Giselle and run for a place where white folks are dancing like Africans. Or Maybe a movie where Marion Michael Morrison drawls, “All right compadre…”

White culture? They don’t know what the first word means, and sneer at the second.

But we’re better than them because of it!

  208. Hoodathunk says:

Maybe what aaronk is trying to tell us is that Republicans and their supporters find violence funny. That they have taken the idea of slapstick humor to the next level and that it is a pity normal people can’t find death and dismemberment and poisoning humorous.

Jesus, how does this guy get on tv. I bust my ass every day and have to live paycheck to paycheck, but this idiot can just make up complete nonsensible BS and get paid a fortune? Seriously what qualifications does he have that deserve his paycheck or prominant position within the “media”?

Meanwhile, Beck wants to “see if he can play her game?” Uhm, seems like every single time someone on Fox News opens their mouth, Beck included, the first words out are “some people say”. So Beck isn’t playing Kouric’s game because Fox news INVENTED that game.

And the complete condescension he offers in response to every question is disgusting. He does the same thing on his show on a regular basis. He asks his loaded questions and when somebody answers it reasonably, Beck returns with mockery, condescension, and/or insane screaming.

“Good for Adrian?” That is his response to someone asking a question? ANd yet he follows up by not only NOT answering or taking responsibility for his own words, but to then say HIS questions deserve to be asked and if politicians have nothing to hide they should be answered.

Then again, Beck also believes that people confronting him with his own words is some unfair “trap”. Right…if quoting him and asking what he means is a trap, then what does Beck think his daily TV antics are which include the incredible “oligarh” conspiracy theory?

I guess this is modern republicanism in a nutshell. Anything they do or say is fair game, or a “serious question” that should be responded to…but they should never be held accountable for anything, least of all their own words.

Well, the thing is, aaronk, this Skousen fellow is a racist:

Toward the end of Reagan’s second term, Skousen became the center of a minor controversy when state legislators in California approved the official use of another of his books, the 1982 history text “The Making of America.” Besides bursting with factual errors, Skousen’s book characterized African-American children as “pickaninnies” and described American slave owners as the “worst victims” of the slavery system. Quoting the historian Fred Albert Shannon, “The Making of America” explained that “[slave] gangs in transit were usually a cheerful lot, though the presence of a number of the more vicious type sometimes made it necessary for them all to go in chains.”

“BECK: I believe that Americans should ask themselves tough questions. Americans should turn over all the rocks and make their own decisions.”

Ahhhh, now I get it! Someone turned over a rock and the comedian Glen Beck popped up. I could never decide if he wasn’t just flushed from somewhere or if he had popped out from underneath a rock.

Comedian…I’m still waiting to see your head explode live on air. Don’t disappoint me boy.

Nobody has shown Beck to be a racist.

Scarborough went on to say that he was starting an “honor roll” of conservatives willing to come out against Beck. He made multiple references to Beck’s “race-baiting,” and “wallow[ing] in conspiracy theories.” Scarborough concluded: “Not only is Glenn Beck responsible, but conservatives who don’t call him out are responsible.

  298. Hoodathunk says:

Did you forget what thread you are on, bonehead?

  299. Fred says:

glen beck admits he is a racist

Glen Beck racist comment has led 36 advertisers to pull out of his show

I think that number is up considerably by now.

ABC airs Beck “racist” comment as example of how “dialogue” on Gates arrest “hasn’t always been polite or pretty”

You ever going to admit you are wrong about anything. See that’s why you will never be taken seriously.

You are a true sock puppet.

is calling someone a “racist” mean that you are a racist?

what exactly does that mean? Please, answer the question since you brought it up originally. Does calling someone a racist IN ANY WORLD mean that you are a racist?

  309. Fred says:

    aaronk says:
Fred, I don’t think white people are oppressed.

Oppression is at the heart of racism. Where is the supposed oppression? Is Obama going to round up all the whities? Is that your interpretation?

  310. Hoodathunk says:

Crayon time. When someone brings up race where race is not an issue it means they are focused on it. Declaring the President of the US has a ‘race issue’ because he is doing his job and doing it better than his predecessor and saying it is somehow linked to race, makes him a racist.

    Ok, pumpkin?

    aaronk says:

yes, by classifying someone as the “typical (plug in any race)” is racist. If someone said that OJ Simpson was just the typical black person, or that Bernie Madoff is the typical Jew, would that be OK to you? Certainly not to me.

  312. Hoodathunk says:

Oh, I missed the part that when confronted with a question about what he meant in regard to white culture said racist shucked and jived his way to commercial.

  313. belaccifer lacca says:

I see your spin, but you know for darn sure if GW called Obama a “typical black person”, you would call it racist….tell me I am wrong?

    Okay, you are wrong.

I would wonder why GW would be telling a story about his mythical black grandmother but if he told the exact same story about challenging and overcoming pre-conceived notions it would not be racist.

    You are wrong.

  314. belaccifer lacca says:

If someone said that OJ Simpson was just the typical black person, or that Bernie Madoff is the typical Jew, would that be OK to you? Certainly not to me.

Once again, I will point out that much worse things were said by beck and you defended them as humor.

You are as transparent as saran wrap.

  316. Hoodathunk says:

and, yes, aaronk, I said shucked and jived. You see, I have this strange idea that every ethnic group in America has brought something to the melting pot. Slang, music, attitude and most especially food. Yes, they bring things to our table that can make our country all the better. Burritos, Dirty Rice, Sushi, Chitlins, you name it, it makes us a more colorful, more inclusive place to live.

CCL/S’Marm. I apologize for that error. It’s not one I usually make. Perhaps I’m simply losing in my wrestling match with my own geezerhood today. Or maybe it’s just the distraction of a wealth of stupidity coming from our friends on the right. And the confusion! The bouquet on uncorking that is almost overwhelming. So many idiot trolls to whack and so little time.

So, somehow, in erron’s view, Obama was comparing his grandmother to a murderer and to a swindler.

    Gotcha.

  319. belaccifer lacca says:

it also seems that, by aaron’s own definition of ‘racism’ Beck’s statement that Obama has a ‘deep-seated hatred of white people or white culture’ would PROVE that Beck is racist… after all if there is a white culture that applies to all white people Beck is racist!

Therefore, Aaronk has defended A RACIST!

    aaronk says:

I believe it is all that should be seen by any color of person. My daughter is 2, and I can tell you for sure that she sees no major difference between the black kids and the white kids at church. That is the way it should be.

I certainly won’t disagree with you there.

I would like to inform you that there is a difference between ignoring the race of individuals in determining how you behave towards them, and also intentionally ignoring the history of race and racism in America and its pervasive effects that continue today.

    .

    aaronk says:

How about a closer comparison, Randi Rhodes, left wing, progressive talk show host, thinks it’s funny to MURDER the president of the United States.
    http://www.frontpagemag.com/readArticle.aspx?ARTID=8778

Are you ready to defend this?

Absolutely not, that was indefensible. So while you’re defending Beck’s remarks, nobody here is denfeding Rhodes’ remarks. She was promoting violence, and she got called on it. Then she apologized. Beck has not. So, there’s your comparison: you defend violent rhetoric, we do not. Your pundit refuses to apologize, ours did.

    .

    aaronk says:

I am the furthest thing from a racist

Using “color blindness” to ignore the effects of racism is hardly far from being a racist. Jim Crow laws were supported for a century by people who weren’t personally racist, but acted as if the opinions of racists and racial minorities were of equal weight. So while one might not ban black people from their lunch counter because they didn’t like black people, they would do so because they wanted to keep the business of those who did. And just like you, they’d claim not to be personally racist. Yet they supported the perpetuation of racially unjust systems.

    Who’s GW?

Do you mean George W. Bush?

Well, for that comparison to work, first of all, Obama would have had to have called George W. Bush a typical white person, wouldn’t he? But he didn’t.

You’re a very dishonest person, aaronk.

Most white people of her generation were racist. Stating such doesn’t make him a racist, but truthful. Your accusations and justification of white racism is nothing more than excuses for your own personal racism towards Obama and anyone not like you. You are a hypocrite, a liar and a racist and unworthy of citizenship in our country let alone posting privileges on this blog. You are the definition of lunatic fringe.

  325. just the bleepn facts says:

aaronk doesn’t realize Obama described his grandmother as someone typical of her era and where and how she grew up. That’s not racist, that factual. But the lunatic fringe never tires of twisting words and fabricating accusations, because the truth has a liberal bias.

  326. Shayne says:

The trolls forgot what their talking point for today is: Federal Reserve. They apparently believe Bernanke is a czar of President Obama.

  327. livelongandprosper says:

Racism is deep in America, and Beck and aaronk are two examples of why.

  328. piniella says:

A Google search of his website and a Lexis/Nexis search of the transcripts from his Fox News program found no evidence that Beck addressed its meaning.

Beck says a lot of goofy things, like claiming that a university looked at a picture of the 9-12 DC crowd and said there were 1.7 million people in attendance.

  329. John Warner says:

wow, everyone seems to be really excited about Glen Beck. As long as I’ve tracked reader comments, no other think progress post has ever received the more than 300+ comments currently up.
Besides all the idiot comments — you know who you are — I again refer everyone back to ElBruce #59 and galmud #62 for a rational and informed take on the current debate. The rest of you, if you can’t wrap yourselves around this, no hope for the stupid.

  330. bluesunflower says:

Yes, it was pointing out a negative characteristic of his white grandmother and then put her into a category with all wihte people.

  333. EugeneDebs says:

    aaronk says:

Your argument is so stupid it is just pathetic. It shows how seriously brainwashed you are since you are regurgitating it when it makes no sense at all. First it makes no sense to just change black for white. The difference in the context makes that meaningless. For decades at LEAST the argument HAD been made and is still being made in some areas that blacks are inferior by virtue of being black. The argument that whites are inferior because they are white is an argument that no one could possibly be taken seriously in this culture. Second he was talking about the preconceptions OF white people prevalent during this time. This really isnt in dispute. IT would be more like McCain saying if Jamaal saw me in my 4,000$ suit he might think I am a typical white powerbroker. It isnt about the being less than morally or intellectually because she was right it was about the cultural assumptions among white America at that time. Nothing anywhere NEAR racist. You are brainwashed you heard this and repeated it without thinking about it or you are seriously stupid. It doesnt come NEAR making sense to claim that was a racist statement

  334. EugeneDebs says:

    aaronk says:

It was pointing out a cultural preconception among whites OF THAT DAY. One no serious person would dispute. It cant possibly be taken as an argument that whites are inferior because they aer white. Your argument is simplistic and basically stupid
