Uninsured 22-Year-Old Boehner Constituent Dies From Swine Flu

hjnyoungkimberly09-_568332bA 22-year-old woman from Oxford, Ohio, died from swine flu on Wednesday. Kimberly Young graduated from Miami University in December and continued to live in Oxford, Ohio, within Minority Leader John Boehner’s congressional distrct. Reports now indicate that after initially getting sick, Young put off treatment because she was uninsured:

Young became ill about two weeks ago, but didn’t seek care initially because she didn’t have health insurance and was worried about the cost, according to Brent Mowery, her friend and former roommate. […]

On Tuesday, Sept. 22, Young’s condition suddenly worsened and her roommate drove her to McCullough Hyde Memorial Hospital in Oxford, where she was flown in critical condition to University Hospital in Cincinnati.

“That’s the most tragic part about it. If she had insurance, she would have gone to the doctor,” Mowery said.

According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, 30 percent of 19-24 year olds are uninsured, more than any other group. Despite the conservative argument that young people are voluntarily refusing health coverage in favor of extra spending money, the reality is that high costs on the individual market put coverage out of reach. As Suzy Khimm notes at Campus Progress, young people “are far more likely to be working part-time or lower-paying jobs for employers who don’t offer coverage”:

In its 2008 study, the Commonwealth Fund found that 66 percent of young adults aged 19 to 29 who experienced a time without coverage in the past year said they had gone without it because of the cost. [...]

Young people might have a better chance of accessing comprehensive coverage if there were a public plan, which could lower the cost of insurance, particularly for those without good employer benefits. Young people may also have a better chance at coverage if there were generous subsidies for lower-income individuals, as many take lower-paying jobs when they first enter the workforce.

Even though Boehner represents a large university, he has been an outspoken opponent of a public option that would make insurance cheaper and more accessible to recent graduates like Young. On Meet the Press last week, the Minority Leader continued to stick to the obstructionist Frank Luntz-endorsed talking points, dismissing the public option as “big government” while defending a watered-down plan.

Update TPM writes, "Still, if Young's lack of insurance did contribute to her not seeking treatment sooner, it would be hard to find a starker or more compelling example of the need to fix our broken health insurance system. And the fact that she was a constituent of the man who's leading House Republicans' in their effort to block reform only underlines the point."

Boehner is a supporter of insurance industry death panels. He probably thinks that college students either don’t vote or voted for Obama and therefore they are meaningless to him. Republicans are always about money, especially when the money is heading their way.

How do you define “propaganda”? I guess the kind of propaganda you have to catapult is the kind you prefer.

A young, healthy female died in our county last week of swine flu. A lot of people are saying, “hey, it’s just the flu, no big deal”, but I work as a transcriptionist and I’m seeing entire families coming into the ERs for treatment of H1N1 on a scale I have NEVER seen in 25 years of typing medical reports. And it’s only September. This one is so contagious, it’s a little scary.

That’s right, Pat. This is not about alarming the nation. This is about the fact that young American woman died because of our broken health care system. Obama is working on that. Your people were in charge for quite a while and I never heard anyone mention anything about it.

  31. What the GOP REALLY means ... says:

Uh, Patty, our beloved Dick Armey didn’t want Swine mentioned at all and claimed it would be used as a “ploy” to pass health reform. If you think the attention to swine is understated (simple political swerving on your part), take it up with him.

  32. barfly says:

Oh, but I forgot: Obama’s been in office for 8 whole months. Yup, he should have just bugged out of Iraq, and ignored the soldiers who were killed during the instantaneous pullout.

And, I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but American war dead in Afganistan are rightly all over the news, and to a much greater extent than they ever were during the Bush administration.

  132. nomodubya says:

and another thing… which I don’t understand why it doesn’t get brought up more often: if she had H1N1 and insurance she would have gone to the hospital, gotten some antivirals and other minor treatment, paid the copay the (privately held) insurance company would have paid the rest.

Instead she got *really* sick, needed a life flight helicopter ride and whatever other treatment they gave her to try to keep her alive… guess who pays for all of that when she’s uninsured? Yep the taxpayer, that’s who. So, in summary, for you slow rethuglican trolls out there:

    1) Insurance companies already have their “death panels” in place. Just look at all the stories of people who can’t get insurance or get dropped for unrelated conditions. For example, I can’t currently get health insurance on an individual plan because my WIFE is pregnant. I mean wtf?

    2) Taxpayers pay more under the current system because they have to pay for emergency care instead of preventative care which is always cheaper, and with private insurance, doesn’t cost the taxpayer anything

    3) My gut feeling is that if we had single-payer our overall tax burden would be less.. no more need for medicare, no more need for emergency medicare, and people would be getting preventative care instead of emergency care. If we follow the french system, we have single payer and then you can buy private insurance to supplement that. There, you have a single payer, and a private insurance industry. That wasn’t so hard now, was it?

    4) Why is it that our good friends Glenn Beck and pals don’t seem to be interested in the govt waste due to military contracts and other items that are orders of magnitude of orders of magnitude (yes i mean that twice) larger than the amounts we are talking about for healthcare? It’s because lack of healthcare promotes the divide between the upper class and the rest of the world, just like the bush tax cuts did. (and in a side note, the general aviation complaints from Mr. Beck and friends are simply to fuel class warfare, because again, it helps make sure that the lower/middle class fights against the govt and doesn’t help themselves up.

    5) in an almost unrelated note, you can thank General aviation for making that life flight possible. So quit listening to the airlines BS about ticket taxes (airport improvements come from the FUEL TAX on aviation fuel which all pilots pay when they buy gas, not the ticket tax as the airlines would have you believe)

Anyway, I’ve got a million other reasons why insurance/health care reform is a good idea, I’m just trying to frame this in terms of their own insipid arguments :P

That’s why we republicans don’t quite get it right when it comes to solutions- it’s not a systemic issue in our minds, it’s a matter of “personal responsibility.” Well, where is the is the responsbility of the private death panels, and why is your party projecting that reality onto the government?

Remember, in the great republican party, it’s the individuals who are wronged who don’t follow the tenets of “personal responsibility.” Corporations, however, are a different kind of people and can be as free as they like.

Oopsie you pathetic jerk. We have the best health care system in the world and she died. As will many others who can’t afford to see a doctor. In seeing other countries with socialized health care, I notice a much lower mortality rate for everything than we have here in good old 37th ranked US. I’m not sick, I can read.

You really believe that nonsense? I keep posting this link, among others, and none of our “conservatives” bother to read it. Pretty much everything you seem to believe about health care in other countries is just wrong. Wrong.

Just scroll up a little on this page and read Shayne’s comment about her daughter.

    From the link:

There are delays — there are delays — but to be honest I have experienced delays just as bad here in the US. In the UK, I might have to wait weeks or months to see a specialist if my case was not urgent, and that was frustrating. Here in the US, when I was in excruciating pain last year (so bad that I lost control of my bodily functions when the pain hit), I was referred to a breast surgeon by the ER doctor (7 hour wait in ER) — but the trouble is that we had to call five medical centers before we could find a surgeon who could see me any sooner six weeks, and even then it was only because they had a surprise cancellation. And the last time I needed to take E2 to the allergist here in the US, the earliest they could fit me in was two months later. There are delays in both systems. And by contrast, you can get very speedy service in the US… and you can get it in the UK too. When I needed to see my GP in the UK, I rarely had to wait until even the next day. When I thought I’d found a lump in my breast, I saw the doctor the next day and was sent to a specialist within the week.

The sad thing is that the only health care system that can seriously prevent this sort of thing is a single payer system. As it stands, it looks like the public option will be so watered down it will be irrelevant in the marketplace.

As an American who lived in Canada let me tell you how it would have worked there. She would have gotten sick, called a doctor and seen them that day or maybe the next, then gone to the pharmacy and paid next to nothing for the meds she needed. That is how it always was for me there. I never waited, and it was cheap with the Dr. visit being free. If she decided to buy a pair of blue jeans along the way should would have paid 15% sales tax, which is much more than the US, but what she got was a bargain for the money.

In the US it would have gone like this if she HAD insruance: She would have called her HMO or PPO, found someone in network. Would have had to wait to see the proper in network Dr., then would have had to pay anywhere from 20-100% of the cost depending on her deductible or co-pay. Then she would have had to pay 10 times the price for her meds at the pharmacy than a Canadian would.

I am speaking from personal experience. I lived in Canada four years, this is how it goes. Sure, in Canada there are higher taxes but you know what I WOULD GLADLY STOP PAYING MY HEALTH INSURANCE COMPANY MONEY AND PAY HIGHER TAXES IF I WAS GETTING THE KIND OF HEALTH CARE IN THE US THAT I GOT IN CANADA. IT WAS A BARGAIN.

All these idiot trolls clearly have not been following this epidemic from the beginning, and aren’t following it now.

But, unlike seasonal strains, which badly affect the elderly and people with weak immune systems, the swine flu is infecting and killing healthy young people.

This has been noticed and remarked on by virologists since this was limited to Mexico. Also, the fact that it was so active and devastating in such particularly warm weather. This is not your average flu, though

The cough, fever and headache symptoms are identical to seasonal flus.

    link

If a person went to the emergency room and paid uninsured prices every time they had flu-like symptoms, they would be broke in no time. Hmmm. Rent or the emergency room? (where if I don’t have the flu now, I will certainly be more likely to have it after five or six hours in an emergency room). Food? Or the emergency room?

Young, otherwise healthy people are being debilitated with H1N1. It’s remarkable.

For the idiots asking what could “Obamacare” would do—you mouth-breathing, knuckle-dragging, anti-social POS—it would have gotten her an affordable vaccination. It would have given her the assurance that she could take herself to the hospital as soon as she became ill, instead of having to be taken there. It would have insured that she would not be put into penury or made homeless by an ER bill for a false alarm.

You pathologically selfish individuals also fail to realize that a vaccination would have made it less likely that she would infect YOU or anyone else. GET CANCER.

On Tuesday two of my friends were married. Recent college graduates, they were planning to marry next January. But just as the last semester ended, the woman’s excruciating headaches required brain surgery, and she rushed to have the operation before she lost her coverage under her parents’ plan. And post-op, as she lost her insurance, she tried to pay the massive premiums on an individual insurance plan that were marked up because of her ‘pre-existing condition’.

Unable to work because of her symptoms, they finally chose to get married right away so she could have coverage under her husband’s employer’s group plan. Thank God he has coverage in a large enough group that she will not be denied care for her ‘pre-existing’ condition.

Kind of OT but still (and I didn’t read the other comments so forgive me if I’m duplicating) but…I just talked to my parents who live in Arizona. Apparently, they are now one of 3 or 4 states that require a doctor’s prescription in order for folks to get a flu shot. The reason is that a few people had received two flu shots last year therefore, all people seeking the shot need to be run through a data base.

So, we’re telling uninsured people to see a MD to get a flu shot that can prevent their getting a somewhat preventible illness thus increasing the probability of an ER visit. It will be very interesting to see if Arizona and the other states have higher instances of full blown flu. Gotta love those red states……….

Doctor visits alone are at least $120 each, and a single prescription can cost $100. What if the poor girl had needed a *gasp* blood test too???

It shouldn’t be about how much it costs, it should be about making lives better for everyone by giving them access to medical care that they can pay for in a reasonable way. Life is not about who can pay for it or not, it’s about the people around you who value and cherish you.

And in return the stock holders all get THE SAME return on their money for each of the types of RISK associated with the different stock types.

Yes, the E.R. is required to treat you if it is a life threatening situation. A private hospital that has not received Hill-Burton funds need only stabilize you before transfering (dumping) you on a public facility. In any event, nothing precludes either hospital from billing you. Upon receipt of the bill you can make your case for charity care to the hospital, and if truely needy you may be successful with the public facility. I can’t believe I’m addressing a troll but here goes, Outlaw @ 460, yes, no one can be denied care from an emergency room however, that ER will hound you for payment for the rest of your life (unless of course you declare bankruptcy).

Just for a moment, imagine that you and your employer have been paying for your health insurance for many years. Suddenly, you are laid off and no longer have the benefit of employer subsidized health insurance. You also can not afford to pay the premium on your own. The next month, you are diagnosed with a horrible illness that requires intensive treatment. Since you can no longer afford to pay the premiums (even though you and your employer have paid the insurer tens of thousands of dollars over the years) you now have no coverage for services not provided by an emergency room. Who is going to see you? Who is going to treat you? Unless of course you are able to suddently liquidate every asset you have to cover the cost of your treatment.

Why not have these funds you and your employer pay deposited into a common fund where ALL people are covered when they need the coverage. Insurance shouldn’t end when you change providers or when you can’t pay the premiums. It’s like conservatives like to say…”use some common sense”….geez.

450 posts, but I think a couple of points have to be made.
    1) There’s an awful lot of talk about disease as if it’s sin. A lot of it can be thought that way–by the left just as much as the right. (I’ve read enough ‘fat american car fast food diatribes’ by liberals to fill up my dance card for a few decades.) And there’s all that talk about ‘young, healthy’ people who are considered immune in some way.
Young, healthy people can die from the flu. Very easily.
    2) When you’re dealing with a contagious disease, your neighbor’s health care matters. If your neighbor doesn’t have health insurance, he or she will put off going to the doctor or getting that flu shot, and the probability goes up substantially that you’ll get it too. Public health is important.
In the case of a contagious disease, , the ’socialist’ idea of making sure everyone is covered is simply the intelligent attitude, and the I’ve got mine attitude is suicidal.
    3) If we had a public option run by the government, how much do you want to bet that the government wouldn’t waive the co-pay in order to deal with a public health crisis? How much easier than trying to wrestle and negotiate with private insurers to do the same thing?
    4) PS, if you look at that young lady’s picture and see dreadlocks, you’re blind as well as devoid of decency.

What the repugs fail to say is if you go to the ER and are diagnosed with a condition that requires a follow up or a specialist then you are on your own. Walking into a specialists office for the first time will cost you at least 175 dollars. If you dont have insurance then the specialist will not see you. So where does someone who is uninsured go for help? Also if you go to the ER theres a good chance you will be given prescriptions to fill. Who is going to pay for that? The bottom line is people in our country need affordable health insurance. Why the fck would anyone deny the citizens of our country the help that they deserve?

Leaving aside the whole ignorant “Illegals use the er room as a personal dr” crap, let’s take a good look at what Pee Pee is actually saying…

Pee is as much as acknowledging that regressives think that the ER should be used as a primary care facility by people who have no other option.

They must really believe that the system works just fine that way. Otherwise, why would they suggest it as a valid course of action?

We, on the other hand, recognize that such a system degrades the ability of doctors to actually treat emergencies efficiently, it’s a much much more expensive way to deliver medical care, and it costs taxpayers as well as hospitals.

But it seems fine with the tighty-righties.

I’ll break this down for Outlaw as simply as I can. I have worked for five major employers throughout my career. Each employer had a different insurance carrier. Each employer and myself paid a premium each month for my health care. I have been lucky and have consumed very little health care (aka “losses” to the insurance company) in my life. Do these health care dollars follow me? No. If I should suddenly find myself uninsured, will any of these insurers cover my illness? No.

I’m going to take a wild guess that you already have employer subsidized insurance. You and your employer are already paying for care on behalf of other insureds. It’s a pool. A pool that insures that those who, God forbid, face asset s*cking illnesses & don’t lose everything they’ve worked for. Unless of couse, they have their insurance recinded…but that’s another thread.

Pool the money. That’s what self-insured companies already do (I used to work for one). If this were the norm, each State (or the U.S.A.) would be self-insured. Whether a person works part-time or full-time, they would be covered. It would also prevent large corporations from skirting around providing benefits to part-time employees (Wal-Mart, are you listening??). If we don’t move toward this model, we’re just continuing to pour money into a for-profit insurance system that may never be able to help you, especially when you need it most. Clear? Or are you going to selectively pick out a sentence from my argument and run with it?

So the private pools are more efficient. We print our customers’ policies with colorful and stylish logos on durable print paper. We print nice letters for recisions, too.

I read it. You just don’t make any sense. The whole point is that if she was seeing a doctor regularly as we all should then this would not have happened.

How do you know she had a job? Lot’s of people with degrees out of work right now.

If she thought she was going to die of course she would have gone to the doctor. Since she was young she had no reason to believe she was in danger of dying.

A simple inexpensive doctors visit could have saved her life and as you pointed out, it’s not inexpensive.

Your implication that you can go to the clinic and not pay a dime and let them bill you tells me just how little you actually know about what you feel so free to give advice about.

So many of the scoundrels that claim to know all about the French system have never even left the U.S., let alone having had any experience with the French health care system.

No one in France has to declare bankruptcy due to medical costs.

Our system is stupid and utterly absurd, as are the morons on this blog who continue to defend it.

That would mean 98% of students don’t have to pay for car insurance.

Another 80% would have had to repay some time of student loan, then there’s rent, utilities, clothing and food.

So she looks for a job and can’t find one (there’s not many around if you didn’t notice). So she doesn’t buy new clothes but she still has to repay her student loans. What to do? Maybe eats Ramen all the time like I did when I was in school, and had the utilities shut off once in a while.

Acording to your logic she should have either gone homeless or quit eating in order to pay for her healthcare.

Your truely are a moron. The thing I said about statistical probabilities is true. Yet you continue to defend the indefensible.

The others, obviously, have a right to their opinion.I agree with all of your points, except this one. The progressives don’t think we are entitled to our opinion. If they had their way we wouldn’t be allowed to post here. TP went half the way to silencing differing opinions by incorporating the “vote down” button which they use w/out even reading the post.

I agree that down-voting is being overused. Some wingnuts actually present and defend their political opinions, rather than try to divert the thread into nothing but personal exchanges. Or what’s worse, posting completely irrelevant “news” items to try to change the topic of discussion, as you did above.

But enough discussions have been ruined that some system was necessary. Prior to that, a lot of regulars were using mass-flagging to go after the derailers, which probably made life difficult for the moderation staff. Get rid of flagging? Then the ad-spammers take over. Now all we have to worry about is getting people to shut up about discussing their votes instead of the topic at hand, as you are doing here.

    .

    Outlaw284 says:

Now is it the fed job to take care of the states because they were to stupid to listen to the repeated warnings that they got that the levee’s would hold in a cat. 5 storm. No that was the job of the state.

Yes, the federal government has agencies in place which are mandated to help various states in disaster situations. Also, each state’s National Guard should be available for that purpose, but unfortunately the majority of them had been deployed to Iraq. Finally, maintenance of the levees was supposed to be handled by the Army Corps of Engineers.

All of these agencies were tasked to do this job, and they all failed. Now, you could argue that maybe the federal government shouldn’t be involved in disaster prevention and assistance, and we could debate that in Congress to change the law. But at the time that Katrina hit, the law mandated that the federal government should help. During a disaster isn’t the time that you get to change your mind.

    .

    Outlaw284 says:

They have already shown that it was the State governments fault in La that caused the majority of the deaths from Katrina.

Karl Rove “showed” this, and it turned out to be a lie. The Bush Administration explicitly lied and pretended that the request for assistance hadn’t been filed in order specifically to smear the Governor and legislature during the disaster. Apparently those smears stuck with some people.

    .

    Outlaw284 says:

They had buses that were ready to move people out and the governor told them to wait.

Please cite your source. I was looking for an item on this claim, and everything I could find said that Blanco had quickly gotten city and state buses moving, but that FEMA simply failed to send theirs. If you have a factual reference of any kind, I’d love to see it.

But in any case, what you seem to be doing is called “shifting blame.” Somehow you seem to believe that anything that could have been done better in hindsight at the local level actually reduces the responsibility at the federal level for the agencies involved to actually fulfill their job descriptions. This is false, and patently ridiculous.

    .

    Outlaw284 says:

You people claim that it is the Republicans that are the ones that have all the hate and do all the violance and yet it is your own party that is being arrested and gased and distroying things in Pa.

No it’s not. There are as many Ron Paul’ers there as anybody else. And those people are way too liberal to get behind the current Democratic agenda, or they wouldn’t be protesting anyways.

    .

How predictable, a wingnut racist bigot!

    .

    Outlaw284 says:

So you are telling me is that I should have to pay for someone that refuses to pay their share of the cost.

No, that’s what you’re telling me! By refusing to pay your fair share of taxes and to support universal health care, you leave loopholes open for the uninsured and underinsured to either not receive coverage and/or have the costs of their care passed along to me in the least efficient manner possible, increasing my costs.

Even though that girl died, she incurred far more costs to the hospital than an earlier doctor’s visit would have. Should I need to go to that hospital, the costs she incurred there are going to be shifted to everything they charge me for. It would be much cheaper to me to give her health insurance through the government. But you want me to pay more so you can have the “right” to be uninsured.

Just another wingnut leech trying to ride on my economic coat-tails…

    .

    aaronk says:

    /snark

    Idiot.

    .

    PaulMorphy says:

Why on earth did she need medical insurance, she could have paid cash. In fact, she didn’t even need cash — the ER would treat her anyway and then send her a bill.

Have you seen howbig an ER bill is? I’ve known people who’ve gone there for very simple things and then get with five-figure bills for a simple outpatient visit.

    .

    PaulMorphy says:

But as I said, this poor girl didn’t seem to think it was worth it to borrow a couple hundred bucks to save her own life…tragic.

Really? If you catch the flue do you automaticaly assume it’s life-threatening? Most people suffer through it, and most people survive it. In most cases, you don’t know whether you have a terminal condition unless you visit a doctor first. And if you can’t afford a regular doctor’s visit, you stay in bed and hope to get through it before Monday. I don’t know what planet you live on, but I’m assuming it’s one that provides you with pretty good health insurance.

  606. ElBruce says:

Communism? WTF? Please higlight the reference to communism in the news post, because I can’t see it.

And it looks to me like you’re advocating completely covering up everything bad that happens as a result of right-wing policies, is that correct? How is that supposed to help America? Or is it just supposed to help wingnuts? Are you admitting that what’s good for America and what’s good for the right wing are completely at odds with each other?

You know, one of the main problems with the functioning of the Soviet Union was that it was illegal to criticize the state of affairs. Nobody could say that they were too poor, or that the quality of goods was bad, or that there were insufficient goods to meet the demand. By law, pointing out that things weren’t going well was a criminal offense, because it constuted “blaming” the country for its own woes. As a result of making it a crime to identify their problems, there was no way to fix their problems, and they ultimately failed as a nation. It sounds to me like you would have been pretty happy with a system like that, huh?

The cruelty and inhumanity of a person putting a wager on someone’s life is just too much for words. And Aaron and his ilk trying to use her death for political gain…how dare you?!

  616. USCKitty says:

Let me clarify aaron, the whole using the deaths of others in Canada to mock the idea of universal health care, the whole callousness your side portrays, it doesn’t say much about your morals eh?

  617. USCKitty says:

Mowery said Young eventually went to an urgent care facility in Hamilton where she was given pain medication and then sent home.
On Tuesday, Sept. 22, Young’s condition suddenly worsened and her roommate drove her to McCullough Hyde Memorial Hospital in Oxford, where she was flown in critical condition to University Hospital in Cincinnati.

Guys, we can’t assume things like you guys did here. She did went when it became serious.

  618. ron418 says:

What is more important for a young 22 year old girl..more spending money or health insurance that she might never need?
When I was that age I didn’t even think of it. You don’t need it until you need it. She won’t need the insurance or the extra spending money anymore. If nothing else I would think her parents would either pay for the insurance or help her with it.

Now on the other hand you can bet Boehner has the best health insurance money can buy. Maybe he really believes in what he says and maybe he believe that young people make foolish choices. He might react differently if he had a son or daughter in college the same age. But then again he is a Republican.

This country has a big problem. The people who can afford to have good insurance don’t want any changes. The people who don’t have good insurance or any at all need the changes. The entire system needs to be evaluated and changed by a non-partisan body of the govt.

It is so sad that this girl chose not to get treated.

She did get treated, but only after it became an emergency, because emergency care is how the uninsured get taken care of. I believe a Republican was recently pointing out that emergency rooms mean we already have universal coverage. The fact that she died exemplifies that this system of coverage is not only inordinately expensive, but ineffectual as well.

It’s Pelosicare because she and her beady-eyed cabana boy Waxman created HR3200. Mr. Hopey-changiness didn’t have the huevos to submit his own bill.

It’s been well documented that much of the reason Bill and Hillary’s 1993 effort at health care reform failed was because they submitted a completed bill to Congress in advance. Many Congresspersons voted against it because they weren’t given the opportunity to help write it. I’m going to go out on a limb here and guess that you were critical of the 1993 health care proposal, yes? So doing it differently would be a laudable idea, more inclusive and in line with principles of democracy.

Either you’re for a President submitting a detailed bill to Congress to rubber-stamp, or you’re for a President pushing Congress to write the bill themselves. Or you’re a wingnut playing the “IOKIYAR” game and trying to have it both ways.

All I know, is if he had submitted a complete bill to Congress, you’d be complaining about that right now, instead of complaining about the fact that he didn’t.

Possibly. I wouldn’t argue if some of my taxes went towards fixing what’s wrong with you.

    .

    random electron says:

Move to Somalia??? WTF does that mean?

Quite simple. You want government out of peoples’ lives? Somalia has no government whatsoever. According to your stated preference of a perfect socisty, Somalia qualifies as a right-wing/libertarian paradise. If you believe in what you purport to believe in, you should have a flight scheduled to move there by now.

Oh, never mind the fact that it’s horrifically dangerous there; government intrusion in the form of police protection is superfluous. Never mind that most folks there are starving; at least they aren’t getting government handouts on your tax dollar, huh? And never mind that there’s no legal economy there to speak of; government regulation is what holds economies back. So you move there, become rich, and then tell me all about how useless government is. Until you do, I’ve got no reason to listen to you.

(warning: there are black people there)

    .

    random electron says:

Hmmm. Had money to pay for tuition to Miami of Ohio for at least 4 years, but wouldn’t buy any insurance or pay cash for a visit to the local urgent care???

I’m guessing you’ve never heard of scholarships and student loans, Paul.

And FWIW, the three times I have gone to urgent care, they’ve pretty much blackmailed me to go the ER. One doctor even told me I had to go because he “didn’t want to read about me in the obituaries the next day.” This BTW was for a charlie horse, mind you – but the ‘good doc’ was convinced I was about to have an embollism, even though I had absolutely NO symptoms of an embollism, and both the ER docs and the tech (who they had to call in from home) were all WTF? All I’ve got is a damn cramp.

  637. bluesunflower says:

    PaulMorphy says:

Addressing your point about assumptions — I was able to find numerous FREE health clinics in her area and I even posted the links, with address/phone info.

Oh, and at the “free clinic”, the doctor there pretty much prescribed Sudafed and Dimetapp for everything. Both of which, I found out, I am highly allergic too. And of course, this isn’t mentioning the time they *did* prescribe me something…which turned out to have a seriously potential fatal interaction with another prescription I was on at the time. I got lucky with that.

So yeah, please don’t tell me how ERs, urgent cares, and free clinics are my saving grace over having a reliable, CONSISTENT doctor who knows me and my medical history – and whom I can afford.

  638. bluesunflower says:

    PaulMorphy says:

No, They can’t put you in jail for an outstanding medical bill….yet.

I’m guessing you don’t realize that your credit score doesn’t just impact whether or not you can make major purchases, but also whether or not you get a job, a place to live, etc. etc. And it hinders you for years, not just a month or two. So a $2000 bill for a cramp that won’t uncramp and all I need is a simply prescription for a day or two of muscle relaxants at a cost of about $20? Uh no. That’s just not fair.

  639. Fred says:

  646. LeslieBurton says:

Reading these stories just break my heart. How anybody can be against health care reform is beyond me.

  647. Denice says:

Are any of you listening to your health department and the Health organizations? The ages for the most deaths are the 20 something’s. They also say to say home if you have the flu and only go to the Doctor if you have sever symptoms or have a pre-existing condition. Our county has two schools with large segments of children out sick and the health department is not testing for swine flu because they are sure that is what they have.

My son and daughter went to college and then lived on their own until they found a job that provided health insurance. They paid for their own health insurance once they were no longer be on mine. $66-99 a month for people in their teens and twenties from Blue Cross and Kaiser is what it cost. $20 co-pay and yes a high Deductable but they were responsible for themselves. They worked themselves though college and made the choice of health insurance over another party. Rely on yourself not the government people.

When my children were young we had no insurance so I budgeted each month, money not used for my daughters chronic ear infections not used was saved for the next doctor trip and medication. Then we made monthly payment to hospitals if we had an emergency. No we were not rich we were eligible to Food Stamps but did not take them because we lived within our needs and ate very well.

Yes, some people will die from the Swine Flu but don’t blame it on no insurance. People make choices and emergency rooms will never refuse treatment, it’s the law. Set up payment plans.

  648. PaulMorphy says:

    More “assumptions” for you …

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1198613/Swine-flu-deaths-UK-double-country-highest-number-cases-world.html

“As the shocking figures were released a leaked internal memo warned last night that the NHS is not ready to deal with a swine flu epidemic because of ‘muddled’ emergency plans and time-wasting bureaucracy.”

And most of you idiots would prefer it this way and never lament another unecessary death under a system like this…

“However, Sir Liam admitted it was unknown how many in the UK were suffering from the virus as many would be treating themselves at home rather than contacting their GP.”

There’s a lot more very good info in this article — and it illustrates what is TRULY a tragedy — Not dying because you chose not to seek care, but dying under a government controlled health beauracracy, because there are no other alternatives….other than “caring for yourself”…

  649. ElBruce says:

    clan4irish says:

Would this girl have been ‘less dead’ if she were a Nancy Pelosi constituent??

Nope, Boehner opposes universal coverage across the entire country, placing people at risk everywhere, not only in his home district.

    .

    clan4irish says:

30% of the 19-24 year olds are not insured?? That means 70% are insured.

70%? Way to go, America! Give yourself a pat on the back. You totally won the Special Olympics of Nationhood!

    .

    clan4irish says:

Where was her family during this time??

Apparently having fingers pointed at them by ignorant commenters on the Internet who prefer to blame the victim rather than to make anything better.

    .

    Denice says:

People make choices and emergency rooms will never refuse treatment, it’s the law.

As we have pointed out over and over and over again since the top of this thread, by the time something is an emergency, it’s often life threatening. That’s kind of the definition of “emergency.”

People shouldn’t have the choice not to be covered. There’s no possibility under which that’s a good idea. Now you can launch from that to victim blaming, but a better solution to the problem (you know, the stuff we Progressives do) is to make that “choice” a non-issue by implementing universal coverage.

    .

    PaulMorphy says:

it illustrates what is TRULY a tragedy — Not dying because you chose not to seek care, but dying under a government controlled health beauracracy, because there are no other alternatives….other than “caring for yourself”…

I bet the wingnuts would point out that the dead people always had the option of not getting sick in the first place, and that if they were going to be so irresponsible as to catch diseases, it’s nobody else’s fault but their own if they die.

  650. military mom says:

Alot of you on here need to WAKE THE HELL UP! As a former resident of Ohio I can confirm the young woman could have been seen at ANY emergency room she visited, without insurance. There are also thousands of free clinics for the poor and uninsured in Ohio she could have went to. And while smearing Boehner, are you also smearing pro- public option leaders for the deaths in their regions? Thought not. For those on here crying about the deaths of people from illness and war, where are your tears for the asisted suicide deaths in Washington and Oregon? Where are your tears for the 50 million babies aborted? Seems as if you hadn’t killed off 50 million babies, they’d be paying taxes now to support S.S. and medicare and medicaid etc. to keep them solvent instead of 11 trillion in unfunded mandates. Can’t have it both ways. If it is so immoral for people to die from illness or war, it is just as immoral for people to die from abortion and assisted suicide

  651. Denice says:

    ElBruce says,

Well, I can guess your next step is that no one should be able to state their opinion. There will be less stress and murder, if everyone is a government robot. Doing what the government says.

My choice to not listen to someone that tells me, it is good for me so I have to do it.

Give it over to the government and it becomes like fannie or freddie…Broke. Or social security…..going broke. Or medicare….almost broke. The tresury……9 trillion in debt and skyroketing. Sounds to me that public healthcare doesnt need to go down that same government road to

Forth, I work in an industry that is so regulated by the Feds that it has all but gone by the way of the doe doe bird. If one regulation doesn’t work, just fix it with another regulation and so on and so on.

Fifth, why do I have to pay for dead beat losers like you when you don’t want to pay for yourselves?

Sixth, I have in the past tried to get help from the government and was turned away, so I ask you why should I believe they want to “help” me now?

    675. which is why we need universal health care, not this faux reform bill pushed by Baucus doing the bidding of the health insurance company…

Very classy…apparently her death doesn’t mean anything to you but political points…very classy of you…

It seems to me that you libs are the ones using this as a political wedge to get your national health care rammed down my neck, it is sad that she died needlessly so you can get your gain

  674. hezcap says:

Thanks for the accurate report joebo. Anyways, many people die who have appropriate health care, too. I’m sure there are many facts left out of this story to make her the poster child for political reasons. Perhaps national health care will work. Look at the government health care models in place now (i.e. VA hospitals, Medicare, Medicaid). How happy are the people enrolled in these programs? Is the level of care acceptable? Just ask them.

  675. CraigBerger says:

Kimi actually did not die of the swine flu, but pneumonia.

Doesn’t change the point this is trying to make, but I wanted to make sure the facts were correct.
