Poised For Progress At The U.N. Climate Summit In Copenhagen

AP090709019310-1 While Mother Jones’ David Corn is an excellent reporter, he is a lousy tealeaf reader. Mr. Corn misread a recent article by Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, the chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and Nobel Peace Prize winner, and myself in advance of the G20 summit, incorrectly concluding our purpose was to downplay expectations on behalf of the Administration. Mr. Corn’s interpretation of our piece is inaccurate. Dr. Pachauri, one of the world’s foremost advocates for strong global action on climate change, and I both recognize that significant challenges remain in advance of the U.N. summit in December. But we are confident that the international community is poised to make substantial progress on climate change in Copenhagen, and that the U.S. is now in a position to exercise renewed leadership in pursuit of a best-case climate scenario.

The purpose of our September 23 piece was to emphasize the importance of climate change in advance of the G20 meetings and encourage the world’s top emitters to seize an important opportunity to take concrete steps to move forward in advance of December’s summit. It is not news that the divide between the unwieldy groups of developed and developing countries have stalled climate talks in the past and that they are drifting again. It is, however, noteworthy that major emitters have recently utilized new channels — the Administration’s Major Economies Forum, for example, as well as the U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue — to lay the groundwork for a new climate agreement in Copenhagen. We think this is an important development and should be pursued whenever opportunities, like this week’s summit, arise. Our piece urged leaders at the G20 to pursue concrete actions prior to Copenhagen on issues such as financing arrangements, technology cooperation, and deforestation prevention to increase the chances of success in December.

Even in the midst of global economic crisis, climate change has remained at the top of the agenda both in the United States and in key countries around the world. There is broad consensus that the effects of climate change are not only real, but will be devastating to developed and developing countries alike if the international community fails to agree on a global emissions reduction strategy soon. The road ahead is not without obstacles, which our piece pointed out. But the fate of Copenhagen is far from sealed — and it is my strong belief that the Obama Administration is committed to doing all it can to lead the world into a low-carbon, clean energy future.

The world’s ocean surface temperature was the warmest for any August on record, and the warmest on record averaged for any June-August (Northern Hemisphere summer/Southern Hemisphere winter) season according to NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C. The preliminary analysis is based on records dating back to 1880.

NCDC scientists also reported that the combined average global land and ocean surface temperature for August was second warmest on record, behind 1998. For the June-August 2009 season, the combined global land and ocean surface temperature was third warmest on record.

We have been terrorizing parts of the third world since 1898, when we imperially slaughtered some two hundred thousand Filipinos who had the gall to resist our Imperial Designs on their Lands.

Washington/Nairobi, 24 September 2009 -The pace and scale of climate change may now be outstripping even the most sobering predictions of the last report of the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change (IPCC).

An analysis of the very latest, peer-reviewed science indicates that many predictions at the upper end of the IPCC’s forecasts are becoming ever more likely.

Meanwhile, the newly emerging science points to some events thought likely to occur in longer-term time horizons, as already happening or set to happen far sooner than had previously been thought.

Our engines were smaller, lighter, and more fuel efficient because of our monopoly on high grade fuel.

The fact is that the oil will eventually run out. Greenhouse emissions aside, we WILL need a replacement. Personally I think it just makes sense to find renewable fuels before the oil runs out so we can make all the other stuff we love. Living without gas will be a small adjustment compared to trying to live without plastic.

That’s not entirely accurate. True, we have not matched ‘98, pending results on ‘09, but its inaccurate to say that there has been no warming since then. Eight of the years since then have been hotter than any previous year since 1936. When one starts in ‘99, and draws a graph of temperatures since then, the “hockey stick” continues from 1997 right up to this past August which was, pending full evaluation of the data, the third hottest August ever recorded.

In short, the aberrant high of 1998 fell above the plot but didn’t change the long term trend either way.

  103. pete says:

That one’s not far off, zooks. The rational course of action would seem to be; eliminate the current tax structure for the energy industry, then impose a new “R&D tax” (a stiff one!) that goes, as it’s name implies, into building greener industries. That way our own consumption would finance the changes needed.

But we all know that won’t happen any time soon.

  113. ElBruce says:

    baker56 says:

Gee, Those pesky ice caps are still melting…OH..on MARS

What you’re implying is that if humans aren’t responsible for 100% of a temperature change that they must be responsible for 0% of temperature change. That is, if it’s possible for planetary temperatures to change independent of human activity then that means human activity has completely nothing to do with it.

Without getting into any of the relevant particular facts involved, that kind of thinking is fallacious from the start. Nobody ever claimed that human activity was a 100% determining factor of temperature, only that it’s a potentially significant contributing factor. So your “Mars” argument refutes only a straw man.

    .

    kwsventures says:

So, you believe everyone will get together and get a climate agreement? I bet against that ever happening.

Your argument here is that due in part to the opposition of people like you, those who want to make the planet a better place are doomed to failure. You are literally expressing pride in your predicted success in destroying the planet. However, you fail to take into account how rapidly you are being made irrelevant.

    .

    zooks says:

I’m trying to understand what the “end-game” is for all of the Global Warming people. Is it to lower the Earth’s temperature? If so, to what, 1950’s ’60’s levels? What temperature is cold enough?

Is it to control what industries can exist and how much they can produce? When will you say you’ve achieved success?

It’s to prevent runaway warming that could destroy massive quantities of the biosphere and massively alter the hability of various areas on the planet. Al Gore’s flick gives a good explanation of what’s been going on and how much of a massive negative impact that can have on our ability to live and thrive in the areas that we do. Or to put it in terms you might care about, how many dollars it’s going to cost us.

    .

    zooks says:

Now, if I was going to question whether CO2 was THE major factor in the planet’s warming, I could point out that the highest global annual temperature occurred in 1997-98. So with an entire decade of uncontrolled CO2 released, no temparature increase occurred.

It spikes up and down; you might also mention that 2008 was the lowest average global temperature since 2000. But the five year average consistently goes up. In something that bounces around, comparing individual years is cherry-picking. 1977-78 was an outlier, as was 2008. However, the trend is clear to anyone with eyes.

If you’ve got a stat that consistently trends upwards but which bounces up and down around that trend, you can always compare an old high-spike with a new low-spike to make a claim that’s completely counter to the mathematical trend that actually exists. But that’s obviously a misrepresentation of the data. You are misrepresenting the data.

    .

    zooks says:

By the way, I do agree that it’s crazy that America doesn’t lead the world in alternative energy research. We need to develop energy sources here in this country for our own national security.

Not only that, if we got the expertise in alternative and clean energy sources early, then we could make money exporting that expertise to other countries such as India or China, who will be wanting to look into how to meet their massive energy demands without completely destroying their environments as well. That means jobs and positive exports.

  114. pete says:

The facade of reason never lasts long.

  115. zooks says:

What has me confused about this: Why doesn’t President Obama just challenge America to lead the world in alternative energy? He could invoke Kennedy and his challenge for space exploration and Reagan to invoke a strong and independent America.

  117. pete says:

No new data? That’s utterly ridiculous. We have comprehensive, accurate data for every day of the last 30 years plus. We have accurate but less comprehensive data going back to the perfection of the thermometer and gas analysis, lets say another 150 years.

Before that we have less accurate data and anecdotes that are fairly reliable at least back to the Dark Ages. Then another 5,000 years of anecdotal data. Another 10,000 or so in tree rings. Another 300,000 or so in ice cores. And various chemical anomalies going back to the age of the surface of the Earth in any given locality.

Now, one can conclude different things from that data. And some choose to deny the facts the data establishes. But?

To claim that there’s been no new supporting data in the last 30 years is such an utterly moronic statement that it demands a full debunking and a healthy serving of scorn.

Nice try aaronk but those numbers are meaningless.

They are for January, which makes them useless for measuring ice in the northern hemisphere where the warming is 2.5 times as great as in the southern hemisphere.
Do you have any data from summer in the Arctic to support your assertion?

Secondly, these numbers are not a measurement of total ice mass and tell nothing about thickness in ice.

Arctic sea ice appears to have reached its minimum extent for the year, the third-lowest extent since the start of satellite measurements in 1979. While this year’s minimum extent is above the record and near-record minimums of the last two years, it further reinforces the strong negative trend in summertime ice extent observed over the past thirty years.

Therefore, global sea ice levels are 1.34 million sq. km less in February 2009 than in February 1979. This decrease in sea ice area is roughly equal to the area of Texas, California, and Oklahoma combined.

It is disturbing that the Washington Post would publish such information without first checking the facts.

Furthermore, no real scientist is going to cherry pick one specific month and two specific years.

What should be done is to take moving averages and doing so will show that since ice extent has been measured by satellite, starting in 1979, there has been a steady decline.

The 2009 minimum is 1.61 million square kilometers (620,000 square miles) below the 1979 to 2000 average minimum and 1.28 million square kilometers (490,000 square miles) below the thirty-year 1979 to 2008

From Tom Friedman’s column in today’s NY times:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/27/opinion/27friedman.html

“…China’s leaders have decided to go green — out of necessity because too many of their people can’t breathe, can’t swim, can’t fish, can’t farm and can’t drink thanks to pollution from its coal- and oil-based manufacturing growth engine. And, therefore, unless China powers its development with cleaner energy systems, and more knowledge-intensive businesses without smokestacks, China will die of its own development.”

“And when China decides it has to go green out of necessity, watch out. You will not just be buying your toys from China. You will buy your next electric car, solar panels, batteries and energy-efficiency software from China.”

“China’s leaders, mostly engineers, wasted little time debating global warming. They know the Tibetan glaciers that feed their major rivers are melting. But they also know that even if climate change were a hoax, the demand for clean, renewable power is going to soar as we add an estimated 2.5 billion people to the planet by 2050, many of whom will want to live high-energy lifestyles. In that world, E.T. — or energy technology — will be as big as I.T., and China intends to be a big E.T. player.”

This is GOOD NEWS for the Planet. It could be Good news for America and its Economy…if we have the Political Will to Move into 21st Century thinking.

Uh, yeah. I have one, teach.

Where is this “Earth” you speak about that freezes in December?

In December, the Northern Hemisphere experiences winter. The Southern H. does not. In June, just the opposite happens. Can’t argue with science about that.

And this is where your narrow mind fails. Stop thinking locally about global climate change.

But, eh, I’m arguing with a dining room table.

  234. Purple State says:

What the whole “climate change” study is telling us, aaronk, is that the prospective global climate is in doubt. We’re talking about years and decades down the line. Yes, we can probably endure some of the current weather patterns, mainly since year-to-year changes are not as noticeable.

However, we should consider the future when weighing climate change. Just how long can we go pushing carbon emissions into the atmosphere without some sort of control? At what point would it require you to rethink the climate’s changes?

And let’s not forget that this isn’t only a question of climate, but a question of supply. The oil reserves have a finite cap to them. The earth won’t have fossil fuels forever, so we need to seek out alternatives, no matter how the oil companies may massage the numbers.

I’m willing to pay more for energy and conserve my own usage in order to guarantee we have energy in the future and a cleaner environment. Why are some people so much against that?

    Playing stupid again?

First of all, if you are admitting the existence of “ice ages” you are admitting the earth is not “6,000 years old”

You have not made that claim yet. I am pointing this fact out so you can share it with your wingnut “Dog is still up there” xto morons and “jeebuz rode around on dinosaurs” crowd. (See a couple of threads below)

The reason why such claim is worth mentioning is because it underlies the fallacy of “well, it is nature at work. Hot, cold, hot, cold. As dog intended”

    No, you dumba$$es.

We, mankind, are AFFECTING and HARMING nature and our planet at a rate never seen before. No other species has had such ability. Not the dinosaurs, not the mammoths, not the fish.
We, mankind, have the ability to destroy what nature took hundreds and thousands of years to build.

For the moronic deniers, like yourself, it is not a big deal.
Sht. Anyone reading this post, at this time, will be dead within the next hundred years. We won’t be around to SUFFER the conditions YOUR progeny will experience, so YOU STUPID f ks dismiss the urgency of the problem because you believe you won’t see it within your sorry life. At least that is what you morons think.

We have at least 100 years of experience dealing with toxic sht deemed “safe” at first. From tobacco smoking, through lead based paint and nuclear waste to plastic bags and detergents. Including CO2 emissions in specific areas.

Why do you think air quality reports and smog checks are REQUIRED in many parts OF THE WORLD, you MORON!

Anyway, there are just as many scientific communities that feel that the progressive idea of global warming is a hoax…

    No, there aren’t. You lie.

There’s no such term as “scientific communities.” It’s not a plural concept. “The scientific community” refers to all scientists as an aggegrate. Creating seperate “communities” is what you would do to oppose science itself. Which is your intention.

    .

    aaronk says:

It’s your problem that you only look at the liberal one-world governmetn perspective.

I find it interesting that you decided to throw “one-world government” into the middle of your rant. The science has nothing to do with nationalism vs. internationalism whatsoever. You just think that’s a bad term, so you tossed it in the middle of your sentence like a swear word. Again proving that wingnuts can’t understand the meanings of words, only the emotive connotation. You might as well just bark at us for all the amount of sense you’re making, or information you’re imparting.

    aaronk says:

theft and dependency is the primary motivator of the left

Our “primary motivator” is to reverse the rampant destruction of America and everything that it stands for that is the primary agenda of the right. What motivates you people to do that, I couldn’t say.

Now as to that crap that there are just as many recognized thinking groups that think global climate is crap, I would ask that you support this thesis with evidences. Even the Bush administration which I hardly think left agree in the end. Do you think the US military leans left? Again feel free to beleive what youwish but don’t pretend it is supported by any majority. By the way can you make any argument in support of your ideas.See the thing is I have multiple degrees in the sciences. What are yours in?

  275. just the bleepn facts says:

What’s wrong aaronk, still don’t have the courage to admit you lied about the global ice sheet shrinking? Were you always a coward? Is that why you fear going to hell and are so susceptible to superstitious nonsense like “one world government” before the “rapture”? You should let lunatic stories destroy your present existence. That’s the mark of a fool.

  276. pete says:

I fail to see any logic in simply lying to make a point, as our pet stupid trolls do. I think it might have to do with the fact that they are ruled by dogmatic conformity. They never apply reason to their own beliefs because they can’t stand the light that an objective examination of reality shines on their real motivations.

Fidel Castro praises Obama on climate change

By PAUL HAVEN (AP) – 4 days ago

HAVANA — Barack Obama’s call for action on climate change and his admission that rich nations have a particular responsibility to lead has received strong praise from an unusual source — U.S. nemesis Fidel Castro.

The former Cuban leader on Wednesday called the American president’s speech at the United Nations “brave” and said no other American head of state would have had the courage to make similar remarks.

In a speech at the United Nations on Tuesday, Obama acknowledged that the United States had been slow to act on climate change, but said Washington was now prepared to be a full partner as the world confronts the threat.

He said developed nations that have caused much of the climate change the planet has suffered have a “responsibility to lead,” but added that rapidly growing nations must do their part as well.

That admission of America’s past errors “was without a doubt a brave gesture,” Castro wrote in comments published by Cuban state-media Wednesday.

“It would only be fair to recognize that no other United States president would have had the courage to say what he said,” the former Cuban leader continued.

Castro, 83, handed over power to his brother Raul in February 2008, but has continued to release frequent essays on current events which are published in state media under the title “Reflections of Comrade Fidel.”

In Wednesday’s edition, the former Cuban leader quoted extensively from Obama’s speech, though he also criticized what he called America’s aggressive military and economic foreign policy.

“Its hundreds of military bases installed in dozens of countries on all the continents, its aircraft carriers and naval fleet, its thousands of nuclear arms, its wars of conquest, its military industrial complex and its arms trading are not compatible with the survival of our species,” he wrote.

US-Cuban relations have thawed somewhat since Obama took office in January. The U.S. leader has loosened financial and travel restrictions on Americans with relatives on the island, and the two countries last week held talks on restarting direct mail service suspended since 1963.

Raul Castro has said he is open to meeting face-to-face with the U.S. leader on neutral ground, and that all subjects could be on the table, and Fidel has praised Obama as a smart and sincere man. That is quite a difference from Cuba’s attitude toward former President George W. Bush, who was depicted on Havana billboards as a vampire.

But the warm words have so far failed to bring about concrete change on core issues.

Obama has left intact the 47-year trade embargo on the island, and U.S. officials have said for months that they would like to see the single-party, communist state accept some political, economic or social changes.

Cuba has repeatedly ruled out making any concessions in return for the lifting of the embargo.

  278. dbadass says:

So really did you jack that FLA business name or didn’t you?

  279. pete says:

Whatever one thinks of the Castro Brothers’ politics, they ain’t stupid. Like the rest of the World, aside from a few tycoons and religious fanatics, they realized that we were being ruled by greedy/stupid people. Thankfully, President Obama has given rational people everywhere hope that responsible, rational, people are now in charge.

  280. pete says:

Of course, anyone who actually follows news from around the world realizes that about 5 billion people heaved a sigh of relief that Bushco handed over the reins without some sort of mad coup. President Obama has restored a bit of the shine to the office Bush shat on.

  281. pete says:

On the other hand, one can make the case that women have gone to work because they have the time, not by abandoning child rearing, but because modern civilized life doesn’t demand that moms spend 16 hours a day at hard labor just to keep the household functioning.

  282. pete says:

    Sorry about #332. Wrong thread.

  283. ElBruce says:

I hear Castro also believes in the theory of gravity, so we therefore have to oppose that as well, huh? Allowing your enemies to define you as what they are not gives them power over you.

    .

    kwsventures says:

Cuba has repeatedly ruled out making any concessions in return for the lifting of the embargo.

What sorts of concessions could there possibly be? They aren’t doing anything to us.

You should really broaden your horizons a little bit. The global warming hoax is a tool of the left winged “one world government” advocates to create an international tax and a widespread transfer of wealth from prosperous countries, such as the US, to less fortunate countries. Of course, all funds must 1st pass through and be filtered by the U.N.

Last March, more than 700 international scientists went on record dissenting over man-made global warming claims

About 31,500 American scientists, including 9,029 with Ph.D. degrees, have signed a petition, that in part reads, ‘There is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of carbon dioxide, methane or other greenhouse gases is causing or will, in the foreseeable future, cause catastrophic heating of the Earth’s atmosphere and disruption of the Earth’s climate

    31,500 scientists…would that constitute a community?

Allen is a weatherman at the FOX-affiliated TV station in Bowling Green, Ky.

How many more of these “Christian” scientists are in your list?

Now back in the real world, the climate scientists and actual research and methodology prove you’re wrong. On one side is a preponderance of published research proving climate change which is backed by ever scientific body in the world. On the other side is a bunch of local religious zealots that work as local weather men and can’t predict tomorrow’s weather let alone climate change. well, I had to google the term “birchers” to see what you were talking about, but no I am not a member of the John Birch society.

That being said, however, I did read about them after I googled it, and learned that the society says is anti-totalitarian, particularly anti-socialist and anti-communist, and leans to right-libertarian. It seeks to limit the powers of government and defends what it sees as the original intention of the U.S. Constitution, based on Judeo-Christian principles. It opposes collectivism, including wealth redistribution, economic interventionism, socialism, communism, and fascism.

That doesn’t sound too bad to me.

It looks like they opposed aspects of the Civil Rights Act, which I assume is where you draw the racist conclusion from. I’m not really sure what their case is against it, but with the exception of affirmative action, I am a big fan of the entire civil rights movement and wish I would have been alive in the sixties to witness more of it 1st hand.

I just debunked that. People who don’t have college degrees in or that use religion as the basis of their opinions aren’t scientists. They’re lunatics like you and Chris Allen.

    aaronk says:
So….I guess anyone who disagrees with you is just a crack pot?

How passive aggressive of you. When confronted with the fact that crack pots like Chris Allen think the bible means there can’t be global warming – you make a deflecting and dishonest response that “disagreement” is the basis for someone being a crack pot! LOL!

No being a crack pot, is why they/you are a crack pot. Understanding science and what the scientific consensus happens to be is why I’m not one, and you are!

I’m not surprised that your response to the fact that these scientists in your list are crack pots is met with an entrenched and insane response. It’s what I predicted and it just goes to show that most conservatives face an incurable mental illness that facts cannot penetrate.

Meanwhile in the real world, there is a world wide scientific consensus that the earth is a globe, and that globe is undergoing climate change. What you flat earth crack pots believe just prove you’re all nuts – nothing more!
