Secret Service investigating Facebook poll asking ‘Should Obama be killed?’

Obama Facebook Poll On Saturday, a user on Facebook posted a poll asking, “Should Obama be killed?” The blogger GottaLaff spotted the poll yesterday and called the Secret Service, which has now launched an investigation. “We are aware of [the poll], and we will take the appropriate investigative steps,” said Darrin Blackford, a Secret Service spokesman. “We take these things seriously.” Facebook has taken down the offensive poll and disabled the third-party application that was used to create it. Barry Schnitt, Facebook’s spokesman for policy, also told ThinkProgress that the company was following up with the developer to make sure that the application has “better procedures in place going forward to monitor their user-generated content.”

This Facebook poll was first brought to the attention of the Secret Service by the Twitter user @GottLaff who sent out tweets about it and posted it on her blog http://thepoliticalcarnival.blogspot.com/ Laffy was first made aware of this by Twitter user @Gr8RDH. Despite being labeled an alarmist Laffy followed through, and the Secret Service called her today to thank her for her efforts on behalf of the President of the United States of America. Every patriotic American needs to realize that what these two people did is exactly what all of us need to do when we see someone threatening the POTUS. With the Oklahoma City bombing in our not so distant past, all threats made against President Obama should be taken seriously. The Right Wing Nutjobs are not making idle threats. They are serious about tearing our great country apart.

Of much greater interest is the third party developer who set up and is running the polls. I have been suspicious for some time that they are either phony from the start, or hooked in to RW websites to skew the results.

I have noticed that many polls are 30-40% more skewed RW than can be seen in standard polling of the same questions, so if it is not Winger Crazy from the start, then it has been hijacked.

In any case given the tenor and slant of the rest of the polling in that product, I am only surprised that most answers were against killing.

If you use Facebook you should know that they do not use the https/SSL (Secure Socket Layer) protocol to protect your login information from traveling in clear text over the Internet “tubes.” This is unacceptable but will help trace back all of the posters who participated on this page.

It is alleged and there is a lawsuit accusing the CEO of stealing the source code to start Facebook while a student at Harvard. The CEO has been accused of hacking the Harvard university student databases to retaliate against a female who rejected him.

    From the wiki:

The advent of Facebook came about as a spin-off of a Harvard University version of Hot or Not called Facemash.[12] Mark Zuckerberg, while attending Harvard as a sophomore, concocted Facemash on October 28, 2003. That night, Zuckerberg was blogging about a girl who had dumped him and trying to think of something to do to get her off his mind:[13][14][15]

    First post from Zuckerberg:
I’m a little intoxicated, not gonna lie. So what if it’s not even 10 p.m. and it’s a Tuesday night? What? The Kirkland [dorm] facebook is open on my desktop and some of these people have pretty horrendous facebook pics. I almost want to put some of these faces next to pictures of farm animals and have people vote on which is more attractive.9:48 pm

Yea, it’s on. I’m not exactly sure how the farm animals are going to fit into this whole thing (you can’t really ever be sure with farm animals . . .), but I like the idea of comparing two people together.—11:09 pm

    Let the hacking begin.—12:58 pm

    Also from the wiki:

In 2004 ConnectU, a company founded by classmates of Zuckerberg, filed a lawsuit against Facebook, claiming that Zuckerberg had broken an oral contract for them to build the Facebook site, copied their idea,[175] and used source code that belonged to them.[176][177][178][179] The parties reached a confidential settlement agreement in February 2008.[180] In 2008 they attempted unsuccessfully to rescind the settlement, claiming that Facebook had understated its valuation in connection with its settlement negotiations.[181][182][183][184][185] Despite the confidentiality agreement, a law firm that represented ConnectU inadvertently disclosed the $65 million settlement amount.[186]

IMHO Facebook is stupid and may have been built by a hateful CEO with ripped off software. The settlement I think is an admission of guilt for stealing software.

Do you want to put your info on this site? I will not.

The Secret Service needs to do their job, which they ARE doing by investigating this incident (and probably many more that we are not aware of). The Secret Service does NOT stand for the “SS.” If you want to start advocating shutting down websites due to political content, then you open to the door to the opposition saying the exact same thing about TP or any of the other left-leaning blogs. Anyone that advocates shutting down Fox News (which is a travesty of a “news” organization) also advocates a government capable of shutting down Keith Olbermann or Rachel Maddow on MSNBC.

I’ve always been clear in my condemnation of violent rhetoric, b-kup. That’s not the issue.

The issue is that the drive is comming from the leading voices of Conservative America. They are openly telling the sheeple to take up arms and wait for further orders. And thousands of them are taking it to heart. They are sending death threats, carrying guns to protests, and running polls about killing the President.

A conspiracy theorist would jump to the conclusion that the Reichwhiners have already decided that the only way to “get their country back” (from that guy) is by bloody revolution. It MUST STOP! I think the threats against President Obama are serious. There is no reason for them.

But backup, my friend, there is a reason for these threats. The reason is the steady stream of vitriol from the right wing.

During the election and ever since, irresponsible conservatives have been trying to paint President Obama as a dangerous extremist who hates America, wants white children to be beaten up by black children, won’t wear a flag pin, etc.

Forgive me for always going back to this, but…

As a conservative, what are you doing to reel in the violent rhetoric of the right? Instead of chastising the left for what you perceive as unfair treatment of President Bush, how about seeking out those who are demonizing President Obama and standing up to them before the situation spins further out of control?

Frankly, I can’t think of anyone left who hasn’t bought into the move to the extreme right. I don’t know if it was a brilliant plan or just fate but that month of teabagging really revealed the true nature of the GOP. Even the professed “moderates” jumped on the bandwagon to crazy town.

    to Buttcup the Apology Troll.

    Dear Buttcup,

You really are an ignorant twerp, aren’t you? People have been using overheated rhetoric regarding Presidents from very early in our history. Sometimes it’s serious and sometimes it’s just hot air. Bush drew a lot of hot air. 30 or 40 serious threats? Obama is drawing more than that every day. Each and every day. Day in and day out. Bush was probably drawing ten times less, or even fewer.

A lot of people on this site would have happily kicked Bush’s butt around the block, and more than once. They’d still be happy to give him a piece of their mind. Can’t speak for them, but I never threatened the man’s life, nor did I find it commendable when the subject was broached.

OTOH, when Shrub was in office, you didn’t see folks from the left standing around outside a Presidential venue loaded for bear or varmint; if there was a whiff of dissent about you, you couldn’t get within a half mile of Bush. There seem to be a lot more arseholes of the right around who ought to be kept away from this President, but unlike the last one, he hasn’t confused himself with the king and he’s still a democrat, in the proper sense of the word. The people on the right ought to fracking back off before they do something truly stupid.

And you ought to STFU and go play somewhere else.

People vote for liberals because the idea of helping their neighbor through liberal social programs sounds good. But instead of helping them, these government programs create huge groups of people who will not be responsible for their own well-being.
Today, more than half of the people in the United States receive some kind of money from the government, and they are supported by the tax dollars of the minority. Financially, this cannot work in the long run.

    holy crap…

“johnny, can you say corporate welfare?”

how can any of that do anyone any good…?

Dang, politically supercilious, after about the fourth or fifth month of our occupation of Iraq, I recall some perfectly ordinary folks I knew, people who had been apolitical, saying MEAN things about poor ol’ Shrub. Boo fracking hoo.

Grow up. Getting booed for your stupid mistakes goes with the turf when you’re President. You get credit when you do right and yelled at when you do wrong.

You can screw up and get yelled at all the time. That happened at the end of the Clinton presidency, but he wasn’t yelled at all the time to start with. Ditto for Bush I; he didn’t just get yelled at, he got fracking thrown out in favor of a different liar. The Sainted Ronnie was getting on a lot of people’s nerves by the time he left, but they managed to contain it. So why is the right making such a hoo rah over this President; he hadn’t even gotten into office before they started blaming him for crap that was on someone else’s plate.

Most guys that make it to President are actually not that thin skinned; they can stand the gaff. Shrub is probably much thinner skinned than Obama. Obama can handle the hecklers and slanging; Shrub couldn’t. What is not tolerable are the public threats and imputations of threats

  209. Max Anax junius -1 says:

    Pebbles,
Remember when people were thrown out of Bush’s SOTU for wearing inappropriate T. Shirt that had a number on it?

Ask Cindi. She’ll tell you all about it. She’s been arrested for far less than carrying a loaded assault riffle to a venue where the president was to speak. She’s been arrested for just showing up!

Anyone who dares say that Bush stood against worse of even the same is a LIAR. You know why? Because they prefer to defend the actions of today based on an assumption that “NORMAL” people behave this way when in reality they.do.NOT!

I still don’t hear the chiming Right Wing denounce the inappropriate behavior displayed during G(no)P events. I still don’t see the outrage from people in the G(no)P directed AT people within the G(no)P who propagate this disconnect and vitriol. Instead, all I hear is a resounding defense…
… An obvious character flaw inherent in more than JUST the leadership of the G(no)P, but also their flock!

Seriously people, it was a user-generated poll app, and some idiot made a poll that too many people are taking way too seriously. I’d like to say that Facebook did the appropriate thing in disabling it as soon as they found out, but now I’m starting to think that them disabling it is what made it turn into such a ruckus to begin with.

People say ridiculous and inflammatory things on the Internet. Yes, it’s true. Take a moment and compose yourself. Perhaps you should lay on your fainting couch and sniff some smelling salts before moving on…

  214. Virtual Pebble says:

@ 221 & 223, Max Anax. Indeed, I do remember that and remember that they tightened up the event screening after that from damned tight to damned near impossible. I also remeber quite clearly that people weren’t peeved at him until after the Iraq debacle; hell, even I cut him slack on that one to begin with – never thought that all the bs about the intel was just bs. It clicked with me that we’d been seriously had a couple of weeks into the march on Baghdad when the Marines stopped at alTuwaitha, the main nuclear research center, checked it out, and then left it unguarded to be looted by the locals and any groupies of the Iranians. That was a pretty serious indicator that we weren’t really there with any concern for certain strategic issues that had been used as an excuse for being there, yanno…

And I’m aware of the issues with PS. I enjoy preaching at him and backup; they’re good targets for arguments – when they respond it isn’t with exactly the same stupid repetition as outlaw or Iain’t(myselftodaysoI’mheretoannoy)you.

There’ve been a few people here presenting us with double standards regarding President Bush and blaming some of us here for not speaking out against cases where President Bush was threatened.

Perhaps people ought to know their opponents before pointing fingers. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were progressives here who denounce ANY form of threats towards politicians. These are people that we vote into office, and we should not be bitter enough to threaten ANY standing politician’s life just because we do not believe in the policies he or she stands for.

Before you point the finger at the group we represent and blame us for shining the same example on President Bush in the past, perhaps you ought to know us better and not jump to conclusions.
