On Saturday, a user on Facebook posted a poll asking, “Should Obama be killed?” The blogger GottaLaff spotted the poll yesterday and called the Secret Service, which has now launched an investigation. “We are aware of [the poll], and we will take the appropriate investigative steps,” said Darrin Blackford, a Secret Service spokesman. “We take these things seriously.” Facebook has taken down the offensive poll and disabled the third-party application that was used to create it. Barry Schnitt, Facebook’s spokesman for policy, also told ThinkProgress that the company was following up with the developer to make sure that the application has “better procedures in place going forward to monitor their user-generated content.”

September 28th, 2009 at 6:29 pmThis Facebook poll was first brought to the attention of the Secret Service by the Twitter user @GottLaff who sent out tweets about it and posted it on her blog http://thepoliticalcarnival.blogspot.com/ Laffy was first made aware of this by Twitter user @Gr8RDH. Despite being labeled an alarmist Laffy followed through, and the Secret Service called her today to thank her for her efforts on behalf of the President of the United States of America. Every patriotic American needs to realize that what these two people did is exactly what all of us need to do when we see someone threatening the POTUS. With the Oklahoma City bombing in our not so distant past, all threats made against President Obama should be taken seriously. The Right Wing Nutjobs are not making idle threats. They are serious about tearing our great country apart.

September 28th, 2009 at 6:44 pmOf much greater interest is the third party developer who set up and is running the polls. I have been suspicious for some time that they are either phony from the start, or hooked in to RW websites to skew the results.
I have noticed that many polls are 30-40% more skewed RW than can be seen in standard polling of the same questions, so if it is not Winger Crazy from the start, then it has been hijacked.
In any case given the tenor and slant of the rest of the polling in that product, I am only surprised that most answers were against killing.

Because we don’t live in China or Iran, to name just a few countries that might do just what you asked. The Secret Service needs to do their job, which they ARE doing by investigating this incident (and probably many more that we are not aware of). The Secret Service does NOT stand for the “SS.” If you want to start advocating shutting down websites due to political content, then you open to the door to the opposition saying the exact same thing about TP or any of the other left-leaning blogs. Anyone that advocates shutting down Fox News (which is a travesty of a “news” organization) also advocates a government capable of shutting down Keith Olbermann or Rachel Maddow on MSNBC.

Yep. There were dozens of violent messages about Chimpy but? I must point out two things.
1. Those messages postdate the realization that he invaded, at least, one country without just cause.
2. There have been many thousands of violent messages aimed at President Obama. The Secret Service has reported a 400% increase in death threats aimed at Obama compared to Chimpy. From the filth that gets posted at Reichwing blogs I would guess that number is an understatement.

I’ve always been clear in my condemnation of violent rhetoric, b-kup. That’s not the issue.
The issue is that the drive is comming from the leading voices of Conservative America. They are openly telling the sheeple to take up arms and wait for further orders. And thousands of them are taking it to heart. They are sending death threats, carrying guns to protests, and running polls about killing the President.
A conspiracy theorist would jump to the conclusion that the Reichwhiners have already decided that the only way to “get their country back” (from that guy) is by bloody revolution. It MUST STOP! September 28th, 2009 at 8:22 pmBut backup, my friend, there is a reason for these threats. The reason is the steady stream of vitriol from the right wing.
During the election and ever since, irresponsible conservatives have been trying to paint President Obama as a dangerous extremist who hates America, wants white children to be beaten up by black children, won’t wear a flag pin, etc.
Forgive me for always going back to this, but…
As a conservative, what are you doing to reel in the violent rhetoric of the right? September 28th, 2009 at 8:49 pmTons of time mostly spend trying to explain away the obvious…
Today: “I’m gonna kill Obama, but you can’t criticize me unless you criticize someone who threatened to kill Bush!”
Tomorrow: “I tried to kill Obama, but you can’t criticize me unless you criticize the guy who tried to kill Reagan!”
Soon: “I killed Obama, but you can’t criticize me unless you criticize the guy who killed Lincoln!”
September 28th, 2009 at 8:52 pmeven_flow, believe it or not, b-cup is one of our more reasonable conservatives posting regularly here.
Unfortunately, about a third of the time that reasonableness manifests itself in serious concern trolling and another third of the time it becomes just out-and-out trolling.
The thing that scares me is that, somewhere out there, conservatives who talk to b-cup think the progressive position is a flimsy straw man with a goofy expression on its face.
September 28th, 2009 at 8:53 pmBut still Iran shouldn’t have a nuclear deterrent… Weird how the strange explain away behavior is relative to the shit the explain awayer wishes to explain away…

Because there isn’t any rhetoric here other than your own and your fellow wingnuts?
Why aren’t you spending your time reeling in the rhetoric of your fellow wingnuts in this thread – if that were your goal?
Criticizing extremist calls the president’s murder isn’t rhetoric?
Take your pick.
backup says:
I like this site. There are plenty of issues that I agree with here. I don’t spend time on other political sites.
We don’t like you. You never agree to anything, other than repeating your idiotic claims that extremist right wingers you belong to are misunderstood. How could you spend time on other sites, you’re here all of the time concern trolling away like a good little extremist patsy.
backup says:
In my daily life, when I talk with conservatives, I often give the progressive position as I understand it from this site.
Don’t speak for us, you don’t have a clue about our positions!
backup says:
I think it would probably be more productive if the rhetoric were toned down all around.
You first? Accusing others of rhetoric that are standing up to death threats – is a rhetorical response. You are the worst kind of hypocrite enabler. The wingnut behaviors only exist because people like you enable and support this extremism! You are no different from an extremist that stands by and permits attacks in the name of Islam as being the result of not being understood, and the other side is radical too. Good luck with that stale old headless fish.
September 28th, 2009 at 9:44 pmOutlaw:
Since you brought up the arrests at the G20, now is a good time to ask you once again, what crime did you commit that resulted in your being sent to prison?
Why do you assume it was liberals protesting at the G20?
Last time I checked it wasn’t liberals complaining about New World Order and One World Government.
In fact those anarchists sound a lot like Paulbots and members of the John Birch Society, as well as Glen Beck and his BBF, Crazy Michelle Bachmann.

September 28th, 2009 at 10:34 pmSo, STORMfront, youhaven’t said anything about this poll and how approrpiate or inappropriate it is.
All you said was that violence against the President “isn’t your way”. Yet you’re trying to smear all of us for death threats against Bush that none of us made.
I would hope it would at least work both ways; if you can get away with simply saying “wanting to kill the President isn’t your way” then you should be satisfied with any of us saying the same thing.
Or is a common standard “not your way” either?
September 28th, 2009 at 10:35 pmIt’s almost like you think Democrats refused to condemn that movie.
Weird.
“I think it’s despicable,” [Hillary] Clinton said of “Death of a President,” a fictional film that features a staged assassination of the president in 2007. “I think it’s absolutely outrageous. That anyone would even attempt to profit on such a horrible scenario makes me sick.”

September 28th, 2009 at 10:37 pmHow the h*ll can this question even be brought up in any forum? Yes, Obama isnt the first president to have his life threatend. It is a fact that there is alot of venom being spewed by the rightwing talkingheads. It makes alot of people think that some wingnut will take limpo and beck seriously and try to harm our president. I think the secret service should be investigating limpo and beck. I for one will be celebrating the day when limpo and beck die. I would not incite anyone to kill them though. to Buttcup the Apology Troll.
Dear Buttcup,
You really are an ignorant twerp, aren’t you? People have been using overheated rhetoric regarding Presidents from very early in our history. Sometimes it’s serious and sometimes it’s just hot air. Bush drew a lot of hot air. 30 or 40 serious threats? Obama is drawing more than that every day. Each and every day. Day in and day out. Bush was probably drawing ten times less, or even fewer.
A lot of people on this site would have happily kicked Bush’s butt around the block, and more than once. They’d still be happy to give him a piece of their mind. Can’t speak for them, but I never threatened the man’s life, nor did I find it commendable when the subject was broached.
OTOH, when Shrub was in office, you didn’t see folks from the left standing around outside a Presidential venue loaded for bear or varmint; if there was a whiff of dissent about you, you couldn’t get within a half mile of Bush. There seem to be a lot more arseholes of the right around who ought to be kept away from this President, but unlike the last one, he hasn’t confused himself with the king and he’s still a democrat, in the proper sense of the word. The people on the right ought to fracking back off before they do something truly stupid.
And you ought to STFU and go play somewhere else.
September 29th, 2009 at 1:08 ampete… conservakids… o m g …
the projection and transference is amazing… no wonder…
near the end:
People vote for liberals because the idea of helping their neighbor through liberal social programs sounds good. But instead of helping them, these government programs create huge groups of people who will not be responsible for their own well-being.
Today, more than half of the people in the United States receive some kind of money from the government, and they are supported by the tax dollars of the minority. Financially, this cannot work in the long run.

Dang, politically supercilious, after about the fourth or fifth month of our occupation of Iraq, I recall some perfectly ordinary folks I knew, people who had been apolitical, saying MEAN things about poor ol’ Shrub. Boo fracking hoo.
Grow up. Getting booed for your stupid mistakes goes with the turf when you’re President. You get credit when you do right and yelled at when you do wrong.
You can screw up and get yelled at all the time. That happened at the end of the Clinton presidency, but he wasn’t yelled at all the time to start with. Ditto for Bush I; he didn’t just get yelled at, he got fracking thrown out in favor of a different liar. The Sainted Ronnie was getting on a lot of people’s nerves by the time he left, but they managed to contain it. So why is the right making such a hoo rah over this President; he hadn’t even gotten into office before they started blaming him for crap that was on someone else’s plate.
Most guys that make it to President are actually not that thin skinned; they can stand the gaff. Shrub is probably much thinner skinned than Obama. Obama can handle the hecklers and slanging; Shrub couldn’t. What is not tolerable are the public threats and imputations of threats
September 29th, 2009 at 1:28 amPebbles,
Remember when people were thrown out of Bush’s SOTU for wearing inappropriate T. Shirt that had a number on it?
Ask Cindi. She’ll tell you all about it. She’s been arrested for far less than carrying a loaded assault riffle to a venue where the president was to speak. She’s been arrested for just showing up!
Anyone who dares say that Bush stood against worse of even the same is a LIAR. You know why? Because they prefer to defend the actions of today based on an assumption that “NORMAL” people behave this way when in reality they.do.NOT!
I still don’t hear the chiming Right Wing denounce the inappropriate behavior displayed during G(no)P events. I still don’t see the outrage from people in the G(no)P directed AT people within the G(no)P who propagate this disconnect and vitriol. Instead, all I hear is a resounding defense…

I’d like to say that Facebook did the appropriate thing in disabling it as soon as they found out, but now I’m starting to think that them disabling it is what made it turn into such a ruckus to begin with.

September 29th, 2009 at 2:01 am@ 221 & 223, Max Anax. Indeed, I do remember that and remember that they tightened up the event screening after that from damned tight to damned near impossible. I also remeber quite clearly that people weren’t peeved at him until after the Iraq debacle; hell, even I cut him slack on that one to begin with – never thought that all the bs about the intel was just bs. It clicked with me that we’d been seriously had a couple of weeks into the march on Baghdad when the Marines stopped at alTuwaitha, the main nuclear research center, checked it out, and then left it unguarded to be looted by the locals and any groupies of the Iranians. That was a pretty serious indicator that we weren’t really there with any concern for certain strategic issues that had been used as an excuse for being there, yanno…
And I’m aware of the issues with PS. I enjoy preaching at him and backup; they’re good targets for arguments – when they respond it isn’t with exactly the same stupid repetition as outlaw or Iain’t(myselftodaysoI’mheretoannoy)you.

September 29th, 2009 at 5:04 amA huge hat tip to Gottalaff for once again paying attention and going after these violent idiots!
September 29th, 2009 at 6:26 amIn both their policies and their behavior, the political Right pose a massive public-health problem which threatens to destroy America. People of the future will wonder how we ever tolerated them.
September 29th, 2009 at 7:06 amMore evidence that the right will do anything to regain power.
They are a party that loves them some violence. They have killed before and they are definatly capable of doing it now.
Can’t wait for the roundup to begin.
September 29th, 2009 at 7:25 amThere’ve been a few people here presenting us with double standards regarding President Bush and blaming some of us here for not speaking out against cases where President Bush was threatened.
Perhaps people ought to know their opponents before pointing fingers. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were progressives here who denounce ANY form of threats towards politicians. These are people that we vote into office, and we should not be bitter enough to threaten ANY standing politician’s life just because we do not believe in the policies he or she stands for.
Before you point the finger at the group we represent and blame us for shining the same example on President Bush in the past, perhaps you ought to know us better and not jump to conclusions.

“Saw this mentioned on Kos yesterday.
Why wasn’t Facebook immediately shut down ?
The Secret Service needs to send a strong message.”
Because that wouldn’t make any sense considering facebook didn’t make the poll?
One of the millions of members did and FB shut down the poll once aware of its existence.
I mean, come on now.
And amanbehindthebush, please disconnect your internet if you’re going to continue your tinfoil hattery.

The problem is that you make false claims. Nothing you say can be put into a legitimate argument. You can’t name specifics that verify your claims.
Wild speculation is just that. Why don’t you just admit that you lost and you hate it and you hate having a black president?
These are the reasons you are still losing. You don’t learn from your mistakes.

I don’t recall any of you saying a word about the movie Death of a President.
September 28th, 2009 at 10:28 pm
______________
And I don’t recall any of you condemning the movie Air Force One, which came out during the Clinton administration and depicted the hijacking of the President’s airplane.
Why so silent, hmm? That was a fictional scenario too… Shall I go ahead and assume that you wanted Clinton’s 747 hijacked by terrorists?
Cause I already have. Prove me wrong.

Yeah, but Bush is out of office now, so it’s a non-issue. Except for making sure those criminals face justice in the courts for what they have done.
September 29th, 2009 at 10:51 amClinton came close, but Obama has done it, driven the wing-nuts insane. The wing-nuts are so frustrated by this guy, they are grasping at anything no matter how absurd in order to attack him.

Wingnuts don’t understand the difference. All they know is that their are magical pixies inside the typewriter attached to the TV screen that make words appear on it.

I say when a sad pathetic human being like you, assuming you ARE human, becomes SO stupid and SO brainwashed he poses the incredibly stupid LIES you posted as if they were actual questions. It is time for you to go kill yourself. You are far too stupid to ever be anything but a burden on decent normal humans. Go. Flee and do the right thing MORON
