Gibbs reacts to Steele’s Olympics criticism: ‘Who’s he rooting for?’

As ThinkProgress reported earlier today, RNC Chairman Michael Steele held a conference call to criticize President Obama’s Copenhagen trip later this week, where he will make a pitch for Chicago to host the 2016 Olympics. “If the priority is the Olympics in seven years, okay, then tell the nation that’s the priority and that’s what we should be focused on because we’ll create jobs then and we won’t worry about it between now and 2016,” Steele said. Today in the White House press briefing, Press Secretary Robert Gibbs explained that Obama wanted to “talk directly with voting members of the IOC and make the strong case for the American side.” Asked about Steele’s criticism, Gibbs took a jab at the RNC Chairman:

QUESTION: Your response to Chairman Steele’s criticism about the President going to Copenhagen?

GIBBS:  Who’s he rooting for?  (Laughter.)  Is he hoping to hop a plane to Brazil and catch the Olympics in Rio?  (Laughter.)  Maybe it’s Madrid.

Watch it:

Obama is taking only 18 hours out of his schedule to travel to Copenhagen to make a pitch for an event that could generate $22.5 billion in economic activity and the equivalent of 315,000 new full-time jobs in America. Regardless of how explicitly Obama is acting in America’s best interests, Republicans are anxious to take a political shot at him.

The story of “The Boy Who Cried Wolf” came to mind when I read this article. Steele and the RNC are bringing that story to life. Won’t they be surprised the day no one pays attention to them?

Maybe the Republicans would be better off reading fairytales, instead of trying to make them up!

White House takes patriotic line on Olympic trip

Some Republicans, including RNC leader Michael Steele, criticize President Obama’s trip to Copenhagen to support Chicago’s 2016 bid. The administration fires back at their patriotism.

    By Peter Nicholas

    September 29, 2009 | 6:33 p.m.

Reporting from Washington – For those arguing that President Obama is neglecting important work by flying to Denmark in support of Chicago’s Olympics bid, the White House has settled on an answer:

You don’t think America should host the Olympics?

A White House aide trotted out that argument against Republican Sen. Christopher S. Bond of Missouri, who said this week that the president should stay put and consult his generals about the state of the war in Afghanistan.

“What does Sen. Bond have against the Olympics coming to America?” spokesman Tommy Vietor asked.

  46. pete says:

    just the bleepn facts says:
    Why do Conservatives Hate America?

I’ve been working on that problem and I’m forming a hypothesis. I think that the conservatives (Although I prefer “right-wingers” since there’s nothing conservative about the reckless radicals who drive the movement.) hate America because, historically and with many exceptions, America has operated with a certain amount of reason, logic, and intelligence. Usually we have a relatively enlightened society.

Then the dumbshits got a chance and screwed up and now they’re in a panic because they can’t understand how it all went so horribly wrong and don’t have a clue what to do. This has resulted in a paralyzing fear that has caused them to fear any government action because, being stupid people, they are confused and outraged by any actions by smart people who’s motives they can’t comprehend.

Of course, they do this under a banner of xenophobia that they mislabel “patriotism”. Just like they miscast the Founding Fathers as theocratic Christian Warriors and don’t want their schools associated with the theory of evolution. They simply don’t even know most of the best things about our country and have managed to pervert the few they can glimpse into jingoistic slogans of hate. Which is extra ironic because, while they try to rewrite history equating modern American Democratic ideals with Nazis because of a loose grammatical relation to “socialism”, they fail to see that they display the trait that made the Nazis so dangerous; rabid nationalism.

They never seem to notice that it’s National Socialist Party and they missed the history that shows that economic theories don’t matter when a society believes it has an inherent right to rule, or destroy, another..

Sorry about the long rant. That’s my hypothesis. It’s nowhere near a theory but most of the available facts seem to support it.

Obama Risks a Domestic Military ‘Intervention’
    Tuesday, September 29, 2009
    By: John L. Perry
    http://www.newsmax.com/john_perry/obama_military_coup/2009/09/29/266012.html

There is a remote, although gaining, possibility America’s military will intervene as a last resort to resolve the “Obama problem.” Don’t dismiss it as unrealistic.

America isn’t the Third World. If a military coup does occur here it will be civilized. That it has never happened doesn’t mean it wont. Describing what may be afoot is not to advocate it. So, view the following through military eyes:

Officers swear to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.” Unlike enlisted personnel, they do not swear to “obey the orders of the president of the United States.”

Top military officers can see the Constitution they are sworn to defend being trampled as American institutions and enterprises are nationalized.

They can see that Americans are increasingly alarmed that this nation, under President Barack Obama, may not even be recognizable as America by the 2012 election, in which he will surely seek continuation in office.

They can see that the economy — ravaged by deficits, taxes, unemployment, and impending inflation — is financially reliant on foreign lender governments.

They can see this president waging undeclared war on the intelligence community, without whose rigorous and independent functions the armed services are rendered blind in an ever-more hostile world overseas and at home.

They can see the dismantling of defenses against missiles targeted at this nation by avowed enemies, even as America’s troop strength is allowed to sag.

They can see the horror of major warfare erupting simultaneously in two, and possibly three, far-flung theaters before America can react in time.

They can see the nation’s safety and their own military establishments and honor placed in jeopardy as never before.
    (continued)

    The CRAZY don’t stop!
    Well…
… If Newt Gingrich doesn’t get his terrorist attack on America and Obama’s Policies succeed…
… a Coup is the next best thing, YES?

    .

    .

    #120 Don,

    I CALL B.S. on YOUR B.S.

OBAMA WASN’T A CONGRESS MEMBER WHEN BUSH LIED OUR TROOPS TO THEIR DEATHS!

    .

  105. ElBruce says:

    Max Anax junius -1 says:

… a Coup is the next best thing, YES?

I’m thinking “bring it on.” On the one hand, I’d think that attempting insurrection against a President known to model himself after Lincoln could be a real bad idea.

But that just looks like pure fantasy to me. From someone who hates America and wants to destroy it, natch.

  106. Ape-Man says:

the pissants teflon/robowhatever/i don’t care are still pissed off because they followed Bush into hell with no way out then followed McCain and crazy woman with no chance in hell of winning and now they salivate to the likes of Hannity, beck and limbaugh frothing at the mouth. Getting all worked up, never looking at the miserable failures the GOP has been

    That’s it! ding! ding! ding!
They have invested so much emotional baggage that they refuse to let it go.

  107. Max Anax junius -1 says:

    .

… But vacationing during a natural disaster is fine if you’re an (R) in Office?

    Eh, Don?

    .

  108. bluesunflower says:

Nice out-of-context quote trying to defame Robert Gibbs there at #33, Teflon Don. For one, you’re actually quoting from an article where Pat Buchanen of all people says he likes our current Press Secretary.

For those of you wondering, the original article is here:

    http://newsbusters.org/blogs/mike-sargent/2009/03/17/msnbcs-brzezinski-defends-gibbs-gaffe

Off-topic, my favorite part is this:

REPORTER: How do you respond to those kinds of allegations from the former Vice President?

ROBERT GIBBS (WHITE HOUSE PRESS SECRETARY): Well, I guess Rush Limbaugh was busy. So they trotted out the next most popular member of the Republican cabal.

Snerk. I heart Robert Gibbs. :D

  109. okie dokie says:

    You’re too forgiving, ElBruce.

Bush ignored warnings of the attacks of 9/11.
He was indifferent to the flooding of New Orleans.
    1700 people died there.

Of course, both happened to evolve into great financial opportunities for Halliburton.

So, all was always good in bushworld.

  110. Max Anax junius -1 says:

    .

    Dear Don,
An Officer in the Military is an enlisted member OF the military. If you think the article is spot on, then are you agreeing that the military and their Officers should stage a coup?

    Anything to …
    … TAKE YOUR COUNTRY BACK?

    .

  111. Max Anax junius -1 says:

    .

    Dear Don,
Does the President of the USA take his orders from the Generals on the ground?

    .

  112. Max Anax junius -1 says:

    .

    But of course…
… Facts don’t stick to teflon, either.

    .

  113. ElBruce says:

    Teflon Don says:

“Crazy” to you is “spot on” to me.:)

Yep. That’s the problem. However, I hope you understand why the rest of America doesn’t take the opinions of a crazy person seriously. As it turns out, handing the reins of the most powerful country in the world over to the clinically insane didn’t work very well. Now the sane people are going to fix the things that you broke. You don’t now get to tell us we can’t because broken is better. At least, you can, but don’t expect us to listen to the crazy people any more.

  114. ElBruce says:

    Teflon Don says:

I didn’t see any footage of obama out in the tsunami saving any people today.

    You didn’t?

President Obama has declared the Territory of American Samoa a major disaster after an undersea earthquake caused a tsunami and massive flooding, according to the White House.

With communications down, not much is known about how much damage was done.

This action makes Federal funding available to affected individuals in the Territory of American Samoa.

That’s while he’s flying off to score us another Olympics, mind you. As in, at the same time.

  115. bluesunflower says:

At this point, Teflon Don is clearly off-topic and trolling. He’s merely posting to get people to respond. I’d recommend ignoring him and flagging his comments, otherwise we’re gonna get another thread that’s got 80 bajillion comments, where only 10 of them are actually on topic.

  116. Ape-Man says:

handing the reins of the most powerful country in the world over to the clinically insane didn’t work very well

    you can say that again!
    Bush ruined everything.

  117. Ape-Man says:

Cheney ruined the rest of it.

  118. johnny dol1ar says:

    Bovine

    So you remember clucker?

Do you remember those two times clucker made you weep and you promised you were never coming back?

But you did come back. To take more abuse.
That was pathetic, Bovine. And another sign of your illness.

How about the time Mike also beat you into a pulp and you also promised not to come back. But you did.

There is a medical term for such behavior, but I cannot remember it – Oh, OK.

It is called “castrati” or “you don’t have any balls to stand by your word”

  119. Max Anax junius -1 says:

    .

    But Don,
    When you say @#120:

LOL! When Bush was president every death was directly attributed to him…LOL! Now? Not so much with a (d) in the house. LOL!

Can you provide your proof that Bush’s cronyism and mismanagement of human services and their assignments didn’t contribute to the heavy loss of life under his leadership(?)?

For you to “ASSERT” that one was better than the other, it does “REQUIRE” a comprehension ability to retain FACTS and cite them. Something you have an aversion too, NO?

    p.s.
At this stage in the “GAME”…
… As of September 29, 2009 – there have been NO TERRORIST attacks on America equal to or rivaling 9/11
… As of September 29, 2009 – Fewer Americans have died due to a successful TERRORIST ATTACK.

    F A C T S! My dear Don…
… Something that still eludes you!

    .

  120. Max Anax junius -1 says:

    ElBruce,
That’s called “walking and chewing gum”.

    But alas…
… We’re still crippled with a population that thinks a president can’t even walk and eat a pretzel successfully.

    .

  121. ElBruce says:

This one’s getting too easy. It’s manager should have thrown in the towel a while ago. Night, all.

  122. Max Anax junius -1 says:

    But I thought BillDoh O’Liely drew a larger audience…?

  123. AaronQ of Maine says:

So instead of coming up with an idea to help the economy or solve the middle east problems Michael Steele whines and moans about obama? When will republicans stop shooting themselves in the hooves?

  124. Max Anax junius -1 says:

    Sorry, O.T… Again(sigh)

The (R)epublicans are at it, still. But worse!

Rep. Trent Franks Declares President Obama an “Enemy of Humanity”
Submitted by Kyle on September 29, 2009
    http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/rep-trent-franks-declares-president-obama-enemy-humanity

Speaking at the recent How To Take Back America Conference, Rep. Trent Franks declared that nobody should be shocked that President Obama does all sorts of “insane things” because he is an “enemy of humanity”: (VIDEO AT LINK)

Obama’s first act as president of any consequence, in the middle of a financial meltdown, was to send taxpayers’ money overseas to pay for the killing of unborn children in other countries…there’s almost nothing that you should be surprised at after that. We shouldn’t be shocked that he does all these other insane things. A president that has lost his way that badly, that has no ability to see the image of God in these little fellow human beings, if he can’t do that right, then he has no place in any station of government and we need to realize that he is an enemy of humanity.

… And allocation BILLIONS OF US TAXPAER MONEY for war isn’t about seeing the image of God in fellow human beings, either. Now is it?

    .

  125. Max Anax junius -1 says:

    AaronQ,
What else are they good at, anyway?

    LIE-CHEAT-STEELE
    The “NEW” G(no)P

  126. Max Anax junius -1 says:

    .

    Dear Mr. Steele,
You missed one from your arsenal.

Guess who else hosted the Olympics?
    … Hitler!

The Southern white males are restless tonight.

  128. Rab says:

What a shame that the President would try to bring the Olympics to the U.S. Jobs created, goodwill….stuff like that

  129. Wiz says:

The whole discussion about what the President should or should not do related to the Olympics has nothing to do with the Olympics, it has to do with Republicans taking another political jab. Just like the health care debate, Republicans look at it as a chance to get in a political hit.

  130. Reggie says:

Did olbermann make any mention of that happening?

It would be difficult to know what Olbermann has mentioned to anyone, since he has been on vacation for two weeks.

What’s with the Olbermann obsession? I understand that you are only doing what the ugly old closet queen Mark Koldys (aka Johnny Dollar) sent you here to do, but it’s still creepy.
Did you know that your boss Koldys is a long time supporter of Ron Paul and that Koldys supported Mr. Paul over G. H. Bush for president way back in 1988?

Mark Koldys, the Wayne County prosecutor who led Ronald Reagan’s campaigns in Detroit in 1980 and 1984, endorsed Mr. Paul last week. Mr. Koldys is chairman of the Michigan Conservative Union, the largest conservative organization in the state.

  131. Purple State says:

You seem pretty against Chicago getting the 2016 Olympics bid, Dan. Perhaps even upset. Care to tell us where you’d like to have the Olympics?

Tokyo, Madrid, Chicago, and Rio de Janiero are the cities that are up for the Olympics. Can you tell us which city you think would be best?

And “not Chicago” isn’t a real answer.

  137. flag@whitehouse.gov says:

Olympics in Chicago sounds awesome considering 8% of city dwellers want the Olympics there. The games would “protect the current corrupt structure” and paper over Chicago/Illinois’s myriad woes, including: “Governor after Governor going to jail. Pay to play schemes. Crumbling and outdated infrastructure. Deteriorating public housing. Failing, dumbing-down schools. Hospital cutbacks. Sanctuary city. Never-ending gang wars (outbursts every Spring requiring massive police presence, police outmanned at the Taste of Chicago, innocents shot in the crossfire weekly, current beating video out now). Cemetery scandal (bodies removed and graves resold)…Acorn, Bill Ayers, Rezko, Blago, Wright. Univ. of Illinois “clout” scandal. Illegal preferential city hiring. City inspectors on the take (Operation Crooked Code). Voter fraud. The unemployment rate. Taxes through the roof. Mayor Daley attempting to extend city taxes to the suburbs.

    flag@whitehouse.gov says:

Olympics in Chicago sounds awesome considering 8% of city dwellers want the Olympics there.

Citation, please? Oh wait, you’re a wingnut. Never mind.

  139. flag@whitehouse.gov says:

It is a Chicago political machine boondoggle that will leave Chicago’s tax payers on the hook.

When it comes to the Olympics, host cities around the world typically spend billions on venues, infrastructure, security and other assorted necessities for the privilege of bringing in tens of thousands of guests for 17 days.

Beijing smashed the spending record for the 2008 games by budgeting $23 billion, nearly twice what Athens laid out.

For many host cities, the curse has overshadowed the blessing. At least four (Sydney, Montreal, Barcelona and Athens) are still paying off debt taken on to finance the games, due mainly to splurging on sports venues that don’t have much after life. While Atlanta’s Turner Field is now home to baseball’s Braves, Sydney’s SuperDome, has plunged into receivership.

Sydney taxpayers shell out $100 million annually for upkeep on a new rail system that hasn’t been heavily used since the 2000 Olympics, while Barcelona is populated with a host of arenas left over from 1992 that now sit mostly empty. Athens, meanwhile, laid out $12 billion to bring the Games “back to their roots” in 2004, a whopping 5% of Greece’s GDP. Upkeep on venues built for baseball, basketball and other sports carries a $100 million annual price tag, and a $144 million sailing facility now goes mostly unused.

The problem even goes 30 years back to Montreal, which despite turning an operating profit on the 1976 Summer Games is just now paying off the last of its debt on Olympic Stadium – two years after the stadium’s baseball occupants, the Expos, split for Washington, D.C. A 17-cents-per-pack cigarette tax still pays off the stadium.

    flag@whitehouse.gov says:

It is a Chicago political machine boondoggle that will leave Chicago’s tax payers on the hook.

When it comes to the Olympics, host cities around the world typically spend billions…

I already posted a lnik pointing out how Utah was repaid in full for their investment. Click it before you start making up stupid crap. They also get the ongoing benefit of the infrastructure built going forward, including a stipend from the Olympic Committee to pay future property taxes. Not to mention the benefit of all of the tourist spending.

The Olympics, like the World Fair, is a great opportunity to get an ecomomic boost and development in a local area, which is why so many cities worldwide compete to host it.

Everything you’re saying is the opposite of the facts, not to mention the opposite of what’s obvious. Seriously. I have never in my life heard “anti-Olympic” sentiment before. Never, not anywhere, not from anyone. But Obama takes a quick plane trip, and suddenly everything that everybody has always agreed to be true about the Olympics, you wingnuts are suddenly opposed to out of the blue. In order to discredit Obama you have to now claim that the Olympics is a money-drainer from the cities and nations that host it? What’s next, you going to repeal the law of gravity and hope that Obama floats away in the sky?

You wingnuts don’t believe in anything. Anything you claim to believe to be true today, no matter how obvious, can be flipped on a whim tomorrow if you think it might get you a temporary political advantage. But all it does is make you look dishonest and stupid.
