Right-Wing Panel Agrees Obama Is The ‘First Muslim American President’

At the How to Take Back America conference last weekend, attended by several Republican lawmakers, former Reagan official and prominent neoconservative Frank Gaffney, right-wing historian Bill Federer, and Christian activist Walid Shoebat hosted a panel on “How to understand Islam.” An attendee of the panel asked the three speakers if they would consider President Obama a Christian or a Muslim, given his “roots.” While Gaffney gave a now familiar response linking Obama to the Muslim Brotherhood, Federer and Shoebat provided new theories, which elicited praise from the crowd:

GAFFNEY: If Bill Clinton, on the basis of special interest pandering and identity politics, was properly called the first Black American President, on that same basis, Barack Obama should be called the first Muslim American President. […] But there is evidence that a lot of Muslims think he is Muslim. But whether he is or whether he isn’t, the key to me, is is he pursuing that is indistinguishable in important respects from that of the Muslim Brotherhood, whose mission ladies and gentlemen, we know from a trial in Dallas last year, is to quote to destroy Western civilization from within by its own miserable hand. That’s what we need to keep our eye on.

FEDERER: In Islam, if your father is a Muslim, you’re automatically a Muslim. Since Barack’s father, stepfather, and grandfather were all Muslim, the Muslim world views him as Muslim. Mohammad allowed his warriors to say they’re not Muslim to gain advantage and um, but he’s uh, Islam permits you to lie to advance Islam, Saul Alinsky allows you to lie to advance your communist agenda, you can put them together.

SHOEBAT: I came from an American mother, Obama came from an American mother. I came from a Muslim father, Obama came from a Muslim father. […] Did you know that your President knows how to do the call to the prayer in eloquent classical Arabic? […] No one can do this in classical Arabic language unless he grew up and was raised as a Muslim.

Watch it:

During the panel, Shoebat advocated entering Arab countries and converting Muslims to Christianity. He also went on a rant about how Muslims in meat packaging plants are contaminating America’s food supply because their hands are unclean.

Gaffney has a record of comparing Obama to Hitlera major theme of the conference — and spreading other absurd reasons for why he thinks Obama is Muslim. As Matt Duss has noted, although it may be difficult to take Gaffney as a serious analyst, his “transparently bigoted” attacks are given a platform on major media outlets. This reason alone is why Gaffney’s smears shouldn’t be ignored.

In the past week alone, Gaffney has appeared as a pundit on Fox News and MSNBC, has been featured in an article in NewsMax, and wrote an opinion column for the Washington Times.

Not surprisingly, that “IF” is usually a crock of shit, as in this case.

Blacker than any actual black person who could ever be elected in our children’s lifetime. After all, Clinton displays almost every trope of blackness: single-parent household, born poor, working-class, saxophone-playing, McDonald’s-and-junk-food-loving boy from Arkansas.[

I believe that there are many good Muslims world wide. They need to get off this particular kick. Maybe the President is really from Krypton and his father was Jor-El, but he is still POTUS.

Bull. Anybody who has the desire to learn this can learn it. It’s not like a Masonic secret where you have to “belong” to be privy to it.

I’m not a Muslim, and I’m certainly not a native Arabic speaker, but I am familiar with the call to prayer and the salaat because I have friends who are Muslim and I’ve seen them at prayer many times. And when I asked what the words were and what they meant, they were happy to explain.

Barack Obama didn’t get a whole lot of Muslim influence from his father — in the first place, his father wasn’t really an observant Muslim, and in the second, his father didn’t stick around long enough to be much of an influence about anything. However, Obama did spend time in a predominately Muslim country when he was a child, where I’m sure that knowledge of the call to prayer (regardless of whether you were Muslim or not) was about as common as knowledge of the song “Happy Birthday to You” is here.

My ‘Catholic’ kids attended a Jewish summer sleepaway camp and they prayed before each meal. My kids are now adults and they can STILL recite prayers in HEBREW. Does this make my kids Jewish?

The Republicans cannot stand the fact that Obama is extremely smart. I would venture his IQ is probably the largest of a president in the last century. He got through Harvard on his own merits, rather than affirmative action. Obama was on law review which is open only to the top 3% of the class. On the other hand we have GWB whose family bought his degrees and his businesses after he graduated. There is no contest between Obama and Bush.

Unfortunately, the Republican Party has lost contact with regular people and their main emphasis is maintaining power by whatever type of disgusting Nixonian election fraud they must use, sad to say. The rational Republican era is over and the vast wasteland of racism now lives comfortably inside the Republican Party. And that, my friend, is a sad commentary on the demise of our party.

They aren’t for anybody because they don’t recognize the same reality as the rest of us.

I would be delighted if there were, at least, two healthy vibrant parties in our country and I think it’s dangerous to give a monopoly to any single group. But? The fact remains that the GOP is no longer a viable political party and those who still claim membership can’t be trusted to make rational decisions.

    ********************************************************

Typical self-justifying, conveniently twisted neoconservative logic — which pretty much means that it’s full of more holes than a block of Swiss cheese.

If my understanding is correct, any biological child of a woman who practices the Jewish faith is similarly considered Jewish automatically and will be accepted as such by other Jews. However, this by itself does not automatically mean that the child in question will view and identify himself or herself as Jewish — and in the same vein, the mere fact that Obama is the son of a Muslim man and may be perceived as a Muslim by some members of that community does not by itself mean that Obama chooses to view and identify himself as Muslim Federer’s argument implies that only other people have the right to decide and determine who we are — that how a person chooses to identify himself or herself is completely irrelevant and meaningless, when nothing could be further from the truth. If I decide that Federer is an egotistical, intolerant, narrow-minded, self-serving, and intellectually deficient buffoon, does that by itself automatically make him one? No, of course not — because I know that my opinions and perceptions of him do not by themselves define who he is in any meaningful way other than in my own mind.

This is where Federer’s so-called logic falls down and shows itself to be circular — it’s clear that his own preconceived ideas regarding who Obama is, regardless of whether these do or do not reflect some degree of subconscious racism, are already fixed to such an extent that facts are meaningless to him. This is why Federer has erroneously assumed that Obama is unquestionably lying when he denies being a Muslim, simply because certain individuals advocating religious or political beliefs which Federer opposes have condoned deception in the past — but this by itself does not automatically prove that Obama is a liar. Nevertheless, in typical neoconservative fashion, Federer wants this to be true and therefore believes that this by itself means it must be true — because the possibility that he might not be correct is one which he completely refuses to accept.

This is nothing more than a variation of the same so-called logic which neoconservatives used regarding Saddam Hussein’s alleged cache of WMD in Iraq. The reason why we didn’t find them, they say, is simply because we didn’t dig deep enough or in enough places — and everything was probably secretly transported to Syria anyway! The likely possibility — that there never were any such caches in the first place — is one which they simply refuse to believe could be true. This is why neoconservatives are to say the very least emotionally stunted and incredibly juvenile (if not completely out of touch with reality). Not only do many (if not most) of them have grossly overinflated sense of their own capability, they are quite clearly utterly convinced that the world is under some sort of unwritten obligation to meet their standards and fulfill their every expectation. Nice work if you can get it, of course…but nearly every human being who’s capable of thinking objectively realizes fairly early on that this is quite simply not true and that real life doesn’t always (indeed, doesn’t usually) turn out exactly how we want it to be or think it should be.

I find myself reminded of a quote from Mahatma Gandhi which he made in response to a question concerning his experiences and observations of Christianity as embodied by the British. I’m having difficulty finding the exact words of the quote — but what he said in essence was that had a majority of the British truly lived up to the Christian principles which so many of them claimed to espouse, Hinduism would eventually have ceased to exist because all the Hindus would have chosen to convert.

Food for thought, considering that Gandhi was himself very Christlike in many ways — and also considering the fact that he and his followers achieved a nonviolent victory over what was at that time considered to be one of the world’s most formidable superpowers.

    This must be exception that proves your point, Bluestocking. If you describe Gaffney as you did above, you’d be correct; it’s just that your description is not what makes him an arsehole. He was all of that, and had other obnoxious attributes before you took notice of him. Of course, no one’s allegations about another make the recipient of the praise or canards the description, but it certainly may color everyone else’s perception. So how about this;

At one point, Grover Norquist called Gaffney a racist and a bigot. They’ve since made up, but if Grover Norquist was pushed by this bozo to that point, there may very well have been a whole load of frackin’ truth to the allegation.

Gaffney seems to be unaware that being born the son of a Muslim has very little to do with Obama’s religious persuasion at this time. Perhaps Gaffney is unfamiliar with the process called conversion??? Or maybe he is just intent on spewing misinformation. Now that sounds like the more reasonable explanation of his lack of being factual. Obviously, particularly in America, one’s religion is a matter of one’s own choice. President Obama attended the Punahoe Christian School in Hawaii. Punahoe is a very fine Christian school operated by the Congregational Church. It has a reputation for very high academic standards. So Mr. Gaffney, if you ask me who knows best the religious persuasion of anyone, I always defer to the person in question. That is, unless I would want to just rabble-rouse and not even be concerned with making prejudicial assumptions or even being factual. Of course with Gaffney, one nay correctly presume the latter two explanations are distinct possibilities. It is the old racial mumbo jumbo to try to make someone into a “not like us” sort of person
