John Derbyshire, a British-American conservative author and columnist for the National Review, has written a new book titled We Are Doomed: Reclaiming Conservative Pessimism. The book contains a section called “The Case Against Female Suffrage.” Yesterday on his radio show, Alan Colmes asked Derbyshire to articulate his argument.
“What is the case against female suffrage?” Colmes asked. “The conservative case against it is that women lean hard to the left,” Derbyshire responded nonsensically. “They want someone to nurture, they want someone to help raise their kids, and if men aren’t inclined to do it — and in the present days, they’re not much — then they’d like the state to do it for them.”
Colmes then pressed Derbyshire on whether women should have the right to vote. “Ah…” Derbyshire sighed, attempting to dodge the question initially. “I’m not putting forward a political program here,” he said. But then Derbyshire slowly began to open up:
DERBYSHIRE: Among the hopes that I do not realistically nurse is the hope that female suffrage will be repealed. But I’ll say this – if it were to be, I wouldn’t lose a minute’s sleep.
COLMES: We’d be a better country if women didn’t vote?
DERBYSHIRE: Probably. Don’t you think so?
COLMES: No, I do not think so whatsoever.
DERBYSHIRE: Come on Alan. Come clean here [laughing].
COLMES: We would be a better country? John Derbyshire making the statement, we would be a better country if women did not vote.
DERBYSHIRE: Yeah, probably.
Derbyshire reasoned that we “got along like that for 130 years.” Colmes countered by asking if he also wants to bring back slavery. No, Derbyshire responded, “I’m in favor of freedom personally.” Colmes noted that freedom didn’t extend to women’s right to vote, however. Derbyshire said, “Well, they didn’t and we got along ok.” Listen here:
Later in the interview, Derbyshire said there’s also a case to be made for repealing the 1964 Civil Rights Act because you “shouldn’t try to force people to be good.”
If we took away women’s right to vote, we’d never have to worry about another Democrat president. It’s kind of a pipe dream, it’s a personal fantasy of mine, but I don’t think it’s going to happen. And it is a good way of making the point that women are voting so stupidly, at least single women.
The women of this forum will just love this guy….. snark.

Re: the VA Tech Shootings –
Where was the spirit of self-defense here? Setting aside the ludicrous campus ban on licensed conceals, why didn’t anyone rush the guy? It’s not like this was Rambo, hosing the place down with automatic weapons. He had two handguns for goodness’ sake—one of them reportedly a .22. At the very least, count the shots and jump him reloading or changing hands. Better yet, just jump him. Handguns aren’t very accurate, even at close range. I shoot mine all the time at the range, and I still can’t hit squat. I doubt this guy was any better than I am. And even if hit, a .22 needs to find something important to do real damage—your chances aren’t bad.

But he wasn’t satisfied to leave it there. He basically called women lazy. See for yourself.
I don’t see any other conclusion from “they’d like the state to do it for them”. Derbyshire makes Sarah Palin look downright normal in comparison and nobody will book Palin now because she is wo weird and far out. Good grief!

You know, this is probably the dumbest thing about intelligence ever said. Especially without proof.
September 30th, 2009 at 1:41 pmWhat a surprise… our “Superior” troll espouses a claim of “fact” with no support.
Who could have predicted that?
BTW, what’s the general thought about those who proclaim themselves “Superior” as a way of self-identity? An attempt to disguise serious inadequacies or what?
September 30th, 2009 at 1:41 pmBetween these people and the ones suggesting a coup, I’m surprised we haven’t heard yet from the out and out authoritarian monarchists. Most of them would probably relish living in their model state, Saudi Arabia. Just change “King Abdullah” to “King Cheney” and they’ll take it.
September 30th, 2009 at 1:41 pmPolitically superior: “Men on average are smarter than women. It’s not sexist, it’s the facts.”
Your “facts,” stupid. Your facts. There really isn’t any legitimate un-arguable evidence to support that position, but just for the sake of argument, how about this:
College graduates are, on average, smarter than those who don’t go to college. Should we restrict voting to just college graduates? We await your politically superior prognostication.

However, the idea of one gender being more intelligent than the other is moot — eligibility to vote has nothing to do with intelligence. If it did, we’d never have a Republican holding office again.

This moron, who evidently hates women and thinks they are stupid, is also incredibly insulting to men. As a father who loves his children, I find his statement above horrendously insulting & condescending to both sexes. Modern corporate culture is the equivalent of monarchy and was set up as a new way to sustain a landed aristocracy when it was clear that monarchy, as a system of maintaining a landed aristocracy, was dying. How many multi-millionaire CEO’s or Presidents of large corporations are there because of family and not talent?
Thomas Jefferson was the first American to start worrying about this attack on our democratic system and to see it as an extension of monarchy.

September 30th, 2009 at 1:48 pmUnbelievable. The things that are coming out of the mouths of conservatives these days is becoming downright scary. Why is it that they are not concerned about the fact that only 18% of Americans call themselves Republicans today? And that percentage has dropped from over 30% after the last election. Don’t they see what they are doing to their party and this country?
September 30th, 2009 at 1:49 pmThe converse of Coulter’s idiocy would be that if ONLY women could vote we’d never have to worry about ever having another Republican president. As a male, I could live with that.

Guess who else were not considered “full” human beings.
September 30th, 2009 at 1:56 pmkwsventures says:
Women should be able to vote. But, I agree with the above statement. I have worked with dozens of women with kids and no husband or child support payments and nearly all believe in the welfare/nanny state should be for them to support their kids. Think about all the women you know. Do they feel the same way? The state/tax payers “owe” them entitlements to raise their kids. Be honest now. The women feel overwhelmed with financial burden and stress.
And the reason why these women sometimes need to rely on welfare is….. Could it be because their husbands are not paying child support? Could it be because before their husband left them for a new model they were a stay-at-home mom and have no job skills? Nah…couldn’t be anything like that.
I once worked for a social service agency interviewing potential welfare recipients. And you know what? NOT ONE OF THEM thought they were “owed” anything other than child support and a chance to find a job to help them support their children.
You are an idiot and your inherent hatred of women is coloring your views. My theory is that women will have nothing to do with you and that pisses you off. Too bad so sad for you.

2) Posterior has been frantically googling for something, anything that will back up his claim but has been unable to find it.

September 30th, 2009 at 1:59 pmkwsventures: “I have worked with dozens of women with kids and no husband or child support payments and nearly all believe in the welfare/nanny state should be for them to support their kids.”
If you really want a rational and fair society, then you’ve got two choices on this one. You either agree that we have an interest as a society to make sure women who have been left alone to take care of their children are going to survive.
Or, you must believe the state should prosecute and force men to live up to their moral duty to help take care of their own children.

We’ve got repubicans saying women shouldn’t be able to vote.
We’ve got republicans saying Social Security and Medicare are unconstitutional and should be abolished.
We’ve got republicans screaming at the president during a joint-session speech.
We’ve got republicans calling the president a fascist, racist, communist, socialist, dictator, Maoist, Stalinist along with a huge pot of steaming racial slurs.
We’ve got repubs tearing down the first Latino member of the Supreme Court.
Great election year stuff.

September 30th, 2009 at 2:18 pmPersonally, I think that the female vote is one of the few reasons that this country has not emploded, but let’s play the game. Women have been the problem since Eve tempted Adam. Funny how it is women–not religion or men that are even considered a contributing factor.
September 30th, 2009 at 2:18 pmConsider this from the Eagle Forum this weekend by Phyllis Schlafly “My analysis is that the gays are about 5% of the attack on marriage in this country, and the feminists are about 95%. [...] I’m talking about drugs, sex, illegitimacy, drop outs, poor grades, run away, suicide, you name it, every social ill comes out of the fatherless home.”
Well, that’s that. Women are responsible for all of the drug dealers, corporate crooks, warmongerers, child abusers, rapists, homosexuals, non-church going infidels, dropouts, welfare cheats, murders, insurance scammers, and tax-cheats. Oh, my god–who knew they had so much influence and power! Phyllis is right–all our fault.
So women, you should stay home, barefoot and pregnant, take the beatings and abuse–if it is dished out,and have no income or independence of our own. No need for an education–how smart do you have to be to do what you are told?
All will be well–the republican right will take care of it all. When they get to govern by biblical law, we will quickly learn our place again. Abortion and divorce will be outlawed. Beatings will be OK because it’s in the bible, pre-martial sex for women will be punished by public stoning–men–not a problem. Civil rights legislation will be overturned, all social programs, can be eliminated–there will be no need for them. Men in this counrty will step up, take charge, make us all happy and secure, provide for our common defense, and our general welfare. And all will right with America.
Guess its going to be called
the he man womans hater club
or male only white wing party

What do the absent fathers believe in, self-reliance? Try to raise some kids without help and then whine at me about people who need help raising kids. This is the sort of crap that only a man could believe in. Has it occurred to you that the perspective of people who actually have to raise the next generation might actually be more enlightened than yours? Sorry, stupid question – of course it hasn’t.
Children should not be punished by society for their parents’ situation.

September 30th, 2009 at 2:42 pmRecent studies, however, have raised questions about the validity of this claim, he said. One such study showed that men have larger brains than women, a 100 gram difference after correcting for body size. Rushton found similar results in a study of gender and brain size.

September 30th, 2009 at 2:48 pmHey PS–
http://www.usatoday.com/news/education/2005-10-19-male-college-cover_x.htm
plus this:
The U.S. Census Bureau has released information about educational attainment in the United States and the Population Reference Bureau is reporting that significantly more women than men are obtaining their four-year college degree. They report that, “About one-third of women ages 25 to 29 had a bachelor’s degree or higher in 2007, compared with 26 percent of their male peers, according to tables recently released by the U.S. Census Bureau.”
That’s 33% to 26% if you can’t do the math.
September 30th, 2009 at 2:48 pmWe see here the logical extension of the Right’s whole strategy to dealing with the pesky problem of elections and voters: disenfranchise the voters who don’t vote for us.
In practice this is done with “electoral engineering”: seeking pretexts for cutting voters from the rolls, creating artificial obstacles to voting, creating artificial obstacles fair vote counting, and maybe changing critical votes here and there were there is no audit trail. All of this done either under a variety of pretexts, or behind the scenes.
Now we get a right-winger who is foolish enough to state the strategy plain as day.
September 30th, 2009 at 2:49 pmYou know, there seem to be a lot of conservatives who really want to return to the days of the while male being in charge of everything without anyone else having a voice in family, social or personal issues. I don’t know what world they believe we live in, but this 18th century thinking will never again play in America.

And another step, if women ‘think’ on an emotional level and men don’t, does this mean the Republicans and their toadies responding to their emotionally charged fear tactics are all women at heart?
Conservative men confuse women being more “in touch” with their emotions with women being “driven” by their emotions. If women are more driven by their emotions then men, why do men more commonly get overwhelmed with their anger and fight each other? Men have far less control over their emotion and its proven out by the levels of violence (domestic and otherwise), anger and fear that Republican men in particular exhibit.
Republican men hate facts because facts have a liberal bias and their emotions have a conservative one! ;)
September 30th, 2009 at 3:12 pmSo…does this mean I’m only 3/5ths of a person – like President Obama…??
September 30th, 2009 at 3:15 pmAnother aspect of this thinking thing is that obviously the Republicans think men are superior because they don’t think with their gonads. The obvious fallacy in this is that since most of these conservative types suffer from cranial, rectal inversion the proximity of brain and gonad is directly effected.
For the trollish types who have a difficult time understanding…if a Republican’s head is up his butt, it isn’t hard for his nuts to do his thinking for him.
September 30th, 2009 at 3:32 pmJohn Derbyshire: building a bridge to the 19th Century.
September 30th, 2009 at 3:42 pmSince more men than women are in Congress and voted for keeping women below the poverty level through Welfare, stopped women from earning equal wages with men, passed laws letting men who rape children out of prison, spend more money on prisons than schools, let corporations outsource jobs unemploying Americans, illegally invade countries like Iraq where thousands of Americans in the armed forces died needlessly, let the American roads, bridges & levees crumble, allow insurance companies steal our money & then refuse to cover medical illnesses, yep they sure are smarter than women, absolutely NOT
September 30th, 2009 at 3:49 pmThe Free market/Social Darwinist Right has a problem with children. They delight in the Randian Superman refusing all help and succeeding by the sheer force of his (always his) genius and will. And, from their college dormrooms, they fantasize about the glories of a gladiatorial free market state where no mutualist help and you end up with a 300-club nation of heroes and geniuses. And they build ttheir starships and conquer the universe!
Kids, however, screw things up. We are born dependent and helpless, and we are not able to compete for a long, long time , during which we need an awful lot of stuff. Inferior beings. Complete losers–but if you throw children into the arena, you die out as a species within a century.
So their lovely talk about personal heroism, when confronted with this problematic fact, decays immediately into family social darwinism. They can lecture the deadbeat parents and say they shouldn’t have had kids in a world where misfortune can strike, and they need help! they find themselves slipping from individual heroes to powerful families, andlose much of what they like about their collegiate vision.
Because in a world where families are the power units, Powerful families throw up their idiot sons and destructive daughters, and individual heroes are squashed with regulrity. In the name of No Help, They find themselves on the side of the villains and of the bad old system we fought a revolution toget out from under.
Face it: You have to have a society that protects children or you die out. In real evolution, the ONLY criterion is number of offspring. Not how big and strong you are, or how many Frank Lloyd Wright Skyscrapers you build. Just number of offspring. And a culture that encourages childbearing, and has a strong support network for mothers will win, no matter how many Howard Roarks the other systems produce.
When you’re in college, it’s easy to sneer at the adult who compromises his principles to feed his kids. It’s even easy for some morally stunted specimens like Derbyshire to sneer at the woman expecting help for her kids.
Ae there no prisons? Are there no workhouses?
The truth is the right wing fantasy fall apart when you stop imagining a world completely constituted of unappreciated 14-year-od geniuses. It falls apart into dreadful evil–as we’ve seen.
September 30th, 2009 at 4:07 pmPoS, your experience with “inflatable” women doesn’t count… ;)

September 30th, 2009 at 4:49 pmLadies and gentlemen, I think these remarks by John Derbyshire should irrefutably prove beyond any shadow of a doubt that…
Neoconservative = Neanderthal
I mean, for the love of all that’s sacred…how misogynistic can you get?? Not only does he think that women shouldn’t be allowed to vote, he apparently doesn’t see anything terribly wrong with deadbeat dads either and doesn’t think that women should be given any support when a man decides after the fact that he doesn’t want the responsibility of fatherhood.
And, of course, let’s not forget this little gem…
Later in the interview, Derbyshire said there’s also a case to be made for repealing the 1964 Civil Rights Act because you “shouldn’t try to force people to be good.”
WTF? Why bother having any laws at all, then? What purpose does the law serve and what function does it have in society, if not compelling the people to conduct themselves in a fair and ethical manner and exacting penalties for failure to comply?
How much do you want to bet that this refugee from the Dark Ages, to top it all off, claims to be a Christian…???
September 30th, 2009 at 4:58 pmCG, you are right this voting business is highly over rated. Only people who make more than half a mil a year should get to vote. Aw, lets not be pikers, make it a cool mil.

Clearly, you aren’t aware of the research studies which have explored the relationship between parental intelligence levels and those of their children. You hardly need to be a rocket scientist to realize that genetic factors probably play some role in intelligence — people who score well on measures of intelligence are more likely to have children who similarly score well on such measures. However, while the researchers found significant positive correlations between the intelligence levels of parents and children generally, they also found that the intelligence levels of male children correlate most strongly with those of their mothers rather than those of their fathers or a parental median. The intelligence levels of female children, on the other hand, were found to correlate most strongly with a parental median — suggesting that the intelligence level of daughters is attributable to both parents in roughly equal measure.
Read it and weep, PS…since it seems fairly clear from your comments that you’re male, the fact is that you probably owe whatever kind of brains you have in your head to your momma!!
(And in case anyone’s wondering…yes, the use of quotation marks was intentional.)
September 30th, 2009 at 6:04 pmDerbyshire is one (or more) of the following:
1) gay.
September 30th, 2009 at 6:08 pm2) angry that last nights hooker not only beat him up but laughed at his dinky winky.
3) In love with sleeping on the couch.
OMG, I think the Ann Coulter quote pisses me off more, and not just because it’s a woman saying it. Did you all read it?!?
September 30th, 2009 at 6:13 pmRE: conservative guy @ 186:
So does this mean that any recipient of taxpayer-funded corporate bailouts should lose their right to vote?
I’m totally down with that. They should also be subject to assets forfeiture so they can’t buy Congress off.
September 30th, 2009 at 6:16 pmconservative guy says:
Women not allowed to vote. I like it. Another group that shouldn’t be allowed to vote is anyone on the government dole.
So you’re opposed to employees of wall street firms, banks, big oil, big coal, defense contractors like Halliburton, and Senior citizens not being able to vote? To name a few? LOL! That’ll go over great at your next teabagging session! LOL!
September 30th, 2009 at 6:18 pmActually,Conservative guy, kwsv, and PS could probably make a case for withholding the vote from anyone who disagrees with them.Ahh,how they yearn for the good old days where blacks sat in the back of the bus and store owners could refuse service because, after all this is America and as a store owner I’ll serve whom I please. Those liberals who took away the rights of store owners should not be allowed to vote.
September 30th, 2009 at 8:05 pm~they want someone to help raise their kids and if men aren’t inclined to do it — and in the present days, they’re not much~
Women. And “their” kids. So have there been a lot of virgin births that I’m unaware of?
Derbyshire seems to be saying that women have children without any assistance from men so the children belong solely to the women and men have no responsibility for their offspring.
I don’t guess I should be so surprised anymore but the overabundance of ignorance in this world nowadays just continues to astound me!
September 30th, 2009 at 8:28 pmI went to the Corner, National Review’s blog, to see it they had any comments about their colleague’s viewpoint. Nothing. They jump on the most innocent comments and blow them out of proportion, but Derbyshire makes a time bomb of a statement and you can hear crickets chirping.
Hi-larious.
I will keep saying this: National Review, the supposed hotbed of conservative intellectuals, must continually pander to the knuckle dragging tea baggers, and in doing so it makes them into…knuckle dragging tea baggers. Their readers don’t care about William F. Buckley, they want to talk about birth certificates and Acorn!
Keep up the good work!
September 30th, 2009 at 9:36 pmPerhaps Repugnican stupidity should be grounds for taking away THEIR right to vote. After all, STUPID IS FOREVER, and this is about as stupid as it gets.
September 30th, 2009 at 10:05 pmOf course, Derbyshire is the guy who said in 2005 that the only that women (girls, really) are really only “interesting to look at in the buff” between the ages of 15 and 20. A very advanced thinker indeed.
September 30th, 2009 at 11:11 pm@ 177. Virtual Pebble says: “@ 49. tombaker says: If that fop gets paid to think and say that, then we should all be getting paid for showing up to mock him. September 30th, 2009 at 1:05 pm ” Watch it, tombaker. No need to insult the fop crowd. Darbisher doesn’t qualify. To be a fop, ya gotta look like Bowie or Jagger back in their flash days, or maybe George Clinton of Parliament/Funkadelic on a down day. Darbisher don’t cut it. He looks more like a Nick Nolte mug-shot. September 30th, 2009 at 3:09 pm
It occurred to me that I wasn’t entirely accurate. Derbyshire looks like a Nick Nolte mug shot without the benefit of a nice Hawaiian shirt. Wretched arse, he is. Mouthbreather, too.
October 1st, 2009 at 1:04 amPoliticallySTUPID
Once again regurgitates what Rush told him to think. You are a moron PS. The liberals here have more logic after a week long drug binge than your weak substandard brain will ever be able to understand. You are stupider than a doorknob. You wouldnt know logic from Kung Pow pork. What an ignorant worthless punk you are.
October 1st, 2009 at 10:11 amPolitically STUPID
No it is not a fact. You are very stupid. I keep trying to tell you that the idiocy you pull out of your ass does not become a fact because you say it. All you are doing is showing everyone how staggeringly stupid you are.
October 1st, 2009 at 10:14 amWow, politically stupid, 35 vote downs at #14 !!! What’s the record? Have you broken it already?
Go up a thread to Cong. Virginia Foxx. Is that anyone’s idea of a nuturing liberal? Ann Coulter? Margaret Thatcher? Golda Mier? Laura Ingraham? Mary Matalin? Karen Hughes? Michelle Malkin? Sarah Palin? Squeeky From? Ma Barker? Lizzie Borden? First Lady Barbara Bush?
How about our Founding Fathers who let only white Protestant land-owning men vote?
October 1st, 2009 at 12:58 pmnuturing should be nurturing. damn fingers not working.
October 1st, 2009 at 1:00 pmNo doubt Mr. Derbyshir has not met the nearly 900 Libertarian women in my Libertarian Moms Group who have and will continue to cast their votes for the principles and practices of individual freedom, personal responsibility and limited government.
We Libertarians Moms are working overtime reminding our representative (both R’s AND D’s) to stop their habitual unconstitutional spending/programs on all fronts!
October 1st, 2009 at 4:21 pmHmm if women shouldn’t be allowed to vote, since they tend to be “liberal”,then maybe we shouldn’t allow idiots like this guy to vote eaither, since they tend to be “conservative”. Nice idea, hunh?
October 1st, 2009 at 5:03 pm@207. Keith says: nuturing should be nurturing. damn fingers not working. October 1st, 2009 at 1:00 pm
Oh, sure, we know you meant neutering, not nurturing.
Golda Meir was, in the proper sense, very probably a liberal; she was also tough as nails. Most of our conservative and reactionary friends are of the chickenhawk variety of politician, so their idea of tough is mean-mouthed trash talker; they don’t understand that a lot of liberals have been through crap that those same liberals wouldn’t wish on anyone else.
Of course, who the hell knows what Ma Barker’s or Lizzie Borden’s politics were and Lynn “Squeaky” Fromm’s politics had to be completely irrational; given Charlie Manson’s ideas, Squeaky would have been found on a politico-social line that runs from Aryan Nations prison gang to dingbat flower child.
October 1st, 2009 at 5:33 pmI think that Derbyshire is quite possibly mentally ill. I listened to his podcast until last fall, when he became so gratuitously disrespectful to the incoming first family that I unsubscribed. I understand that some people probably consider him to be a harmless curmudgeon, but I find him to be toxic.
October 2nd, 2009 at 5:44 pm68. “Actually, we’d probably be a better country if only women voted.” Pure genius.
October 3rd, 2009 at 4:23 pmThank for your article. I am glad I found this.
