Conservatives have been piling on President Obama this week for his decision to take a short trip to Cophenhagen, Denmark, to pitch Chicago as the site of the 2016 Olympics. Yesterday on an RNC conference call, for example, chairman Michael Steele said that “at a time of war,” Obama’s trip was “not necessary.”
Last night on Fox News, Sean Hannity devoted his top segment to hitting Obama over the Olympics. He brought up a tragic incident in Chicago where an innocent 16-year-old boy died after getting caught in gang violence crossfire. Hannity said the murder had turned “political” in light of Obama’s Copenhagen trip — even though the two are completely unrelated and no one else has tied them together:
HANNITY: This is absolutely chilling. Well, now the story has turned political. This Thursday President Obama will travel to Denmark to support Chicago’s bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympics. But in light of this tragedy and all of the pressing issues facing the country, is the president making the right move?
One of Hannity’s guests was former Bush White House press secretary Dana Perino, who agreed that the killing had become “part of a political issue.” She admitted that “this type of school violence, unfortunately, happens all over America,” but quickly added, “But as I read today that this is not the first child that’s been murdered this school year in Chicago.”
Hannity also tried to compare Obama’s Copenhagen trip to sending more troops to Afghanistan, saying that since the President was able to make the first decision so quickly, he should similarly make a snap decision about the war. Watch it:
CNN’s Lou Dobbs made a similar argument yesterday, saying, “The president is heading off to Denmark later this week to try to sell Olympic officials on Chicago, but many say the president’s focus on Chicago should have more to do with stopping the worsening violence in that city.”
Yesterday, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs made a jab at Steele and the other Olympics critics, asking, “Who’s he rooting for? Is he hoping to hop a plane to Brazil and catch the Olympics in Rio? Maybe it’s Madrid.” Former Massachusetts governor and head 2002 Olympic Organizing Committee Mitt Romney also endorsed Obama’s decision to go to Copenhagen, saying “I think the people in the IOC want to understand the level of the commitment of the host country. … And nothing says that like having the presence of the leader of that country and, particularly, the case of Barack Obama.”

SEAN HANNITY, HOST (voice over): Tonight. Gang violence in Chicago leaves a teenager dead and the shocking events are caught on tape. Should the president be pushing to bring the Olympics to this city?
JAMES TRAFICANT, FORMER OHIO CONGRESSMAN: If they lie again, I’m going to go over there and kick them in the crotch.
HANNITY: James Traficant makes his dramatic return.
TRAFICANT: Don’t call me names. Don’t call me names.
HANNITY: “The New York Times” admits that it missed the boat on the ACORN scandal. All of that, plus Dana Perino, Victoria Gotti, here with a brand- new book.

HANNITY: And the city of Chicago is still reeling from the murder of a 16- year-old honor student during an after-school fight between two rival gangs. Derrion Albert died of massive head injuries after he was struck with a large board and repeated kicked in the head.
His mother told the FOX affiliate in Chicago that her son got caught in the middle of the brawl because he was trying to help a friend. Now tragically the massive fight and vicious murder of Derrion Albert was all caught on tape. Now we want to warn you that what you’re about to see is extremely graphic and can be very difficult to watch.

And joining me now is the host of “Give & Take,” which airs on WNBC’s New York Nonstop, Julie Menin is with us, and FOX News contributor, former White House press secretary, Dana Perino.
That video is some of the most difficult video to watch.
DANA PERINO, FORMER WH PRESS SECRETARY: I can’t watch it. And I think a bout the mom who, not only did she lose her son, but now it’s there on video for everybody to watch and it becomes like part of a political issue. And I — my sympathies go to her and everybody.
(CROSSTALK)
HANNITY: This kid, from all indications, a great kid, honor student. I mean, what are we to make — what has happened that we see — these instances come up periodically. We’ve seen brawls at football games. You can go back to Rodney King and some of the riots that have taken place.
What has happened to these kids that they can take a board and beat this kid to death, kick him in the head, and act like that? What happened?
JULIE MENIN, HOST OF “GIVE & TAKE”: Well, that’s exactly right. I mean this is a terrible scourge on society, gang violence. But I want to get back to what Dana said. It’s not a political issue. I don’t think there’s any political about it. This is a terrible tragedy and it has nothing to do with politics.
HANNITY: Well, it’s become political in this sense — the president is going to convince the Olympic Committee to bring the Olympics to Chicago.
PERINO: Well, the sad thing is that this type of school violence, unfortunately, happens all over America. And not always resulting in murder. But as I read today that this is not the first child that’s been murdered this school year in Chicago. [...]
HANNITY: Dana?
PERINO: So they had — there’s a matter of perception, right? And there will be a perception problem. He probably felt like he had to do this.
The one thing that’s interesting is in the United States we’ve always let the private sector push for our Olympic bids and also for our athletes. And, you know, other countries haven’t done that. And it looks like America is going to.
MENIN: That’s not true. You know, in New York Mayor Bloomberg took a very active role in trying to get.
(CROSSTALK)
PERINO: Right, but not the president.
MENIN: Not president? We have Vladimir Putin of Russia, went to Guatemala.
PERINO: Right but.
MENIN: Tony Blair.
(CROSSTALK)
PERINO: And President Bush is very supportive of Chicago getting the Olympics and did events with Mayor Daley but did not go and make the type of display. Look, it’s a 15-hour trip. It’s probably not that big a deal.
MENIN: I think it’s.
PERINO: If they get the Olympics, it will be fine.
MENIN: It’ll be wonderful. [...]
HANNITY: But this is the point. He can make a decision to go to, you know, advocate on behalf of the Olympics, but he can’t make a decision about whether or not he’s going to support — give the general the troops that he’s asking for.
Most Americans would see it as a good thing for us to get to host the Olympics. But not Hannity and his ilk. They have to politicize absolutely everything.
September 30th, 2009 at 5:22 pmFunny how Limbaugh cites a video of “black on white” violence as proof of Obama’s presidency inciting race violence, now Hannity cites a video of “black on black” violence and THAT TOO is evidence of President Obama’s influence (or something).
Can I produce videos of “white on white” violence here in Texas under Bush as “proof” of something?
September 30th, 2009 at 5:22 pmMaybe they should go to Peking?
September 30th, 2009 at 5:22 pmHannity Cites Single Chicago Gang Violence Incident To Wonder If The City Doesn’t Deserve The Olympics
– - As a native Chicagoan I’d enjoy inflicting some senseless violence upon Sean Hannity’s person. Ok, so it wouldn’t really be senseless.
September 30th, 2009 at 5:23 pmWhy would the United States want to participate in one of the greatest sports events in the world by hosting the Summer Olympics? After all, it would mean all those foreigners coming to America, and Lord knows Bush did everything he could to make sure that foreigners didn’t feel welcome here.
Why go back to the bad old days when people actually liked America?

Don’t like it, LEAVE! You’d probably enjoy Darfur.
September 30th, 2009 at 5:27 pmNot to worry. The committee that decides where the games will be held takes political stability into account. As long as the White Wing is around, America isn’t on the list. When you have a national media spouting all sorts of unrest, prejudice and down home nuttiness, no civilized country would want to send anyone here.
September 30th, 2009 at 5:28 pmWhat? Are you telling me that Texas rednecks sometimes get liquored up and get into fights outside the bar next to the trailer park?
Well, who could have guessed?

This is obama’s America.

an unlike you and your troll friends, who by the way are very very un-american and unpatriotic.
we have a country. you Gipsy’s need to fine your own as you seem to have lost it.
September 30th, 2009 at 5:32 pmHannity’s not fooling anyone. He doesn’t give a flying **** about violence in Chicago. He hates Chicago because 1. It’s Democratic and 2. It’s where Obama’s from.
SCREW YOU, INANITY!
September 30th, 2009 at 5:33 pmPolitically Superior says:
Republican Logic:
1) Obama is bad because he comes from Chicago, where politicans murder their enemies.
2) Nobody was ever killed in Chicago prior to Obama becoming president.
I guess that would make sense to a drunken frat boy.
September 30th, 2009 at 5:35 pmI thought these people were supposed to love America? Wouldn’t wanting to host the Olympics be at part of loving America? Or is that their hate for liberal, black man being President who is from the candidate city enough to make America lose?
September 30th, 2009 at 5:35 pmHas Hannity checked out the murder rate in Rio? If murder rate is the criteria then the Olympics would need to be held in Pyongyang, North Korea. Are you ready for that Hannity?
September 30th, 2009 at 5:37 pmChyron HR says:
I guess that would make sense to a drunken frat boy.
not sure but i dont think he was smart enough to get into collage. never mine being a frat boy>>>>>>> well he might have been to a frat party once while deleiving pizza`s maybe.
September 30th, 2009 at 5:37 pmThe right is worried about gang violence. Funny the NRA is going to the Supreme Court to argue that Chicago’s gun control laws are unconstitutional. They’re all about giving local governments control until they’re not. And while they’re complaining about gang violence they’re fighting to get more guns on the street. Unbelievable.
September 30th, 2009 at 5:38 pmThis appeal for Chicago’s Bid to host the Olympics will take ALL of 4 hours of the president’s time.
While he is on Air Force One…he can DO just about everything he could Do in the Oval Office.
The President Lived and Worked in Chicago…his kids were probably Born there. The Olympics will mean a Couple Million Dollars in Economic Benefit to Chicago…during Bad Economic Times.
The Republicans are spouting this Crap because they got Nothing Substantial to Criticize Obama for.
How soon we forget George Bush…who spent his free time cutting BRUSH. If Bush had gone to Copenhagen, it probably would have set off Riots.
The Republicans just can’t handle how Popular Obama is throughout the World.
September 30th, 2009 at 5:39 pmWhen are we going to get just so completely sick of this tripe that we just tell Hannity et.al., to simply STFU?
September 30th, 2009 at 5:40 pmLook, Obama could say that Hannity is the most intelligent person in the world and Hannity would disagree with him. Expect seven more years of “Listen to mm say really outrageous and false things about the President, so I can make millions of dollars.”
September 30th, 2009 at 5:41 pmHannity said the murder had turned “political” in light of Obama’s Copenhagen trip…
Correction, Hannity chose to make it “political.”

I thought these people were supposed to love America?
Wingnuts hate America, one piece of it at a time. But have no illusions, your area’s time will come too, no matter where you live. There is absolutely nothing they won’t vilify or deny if they think it’ll win them a news cycle.
Wingnuts today are a greater threat to America, the Constitution and our freedoms, than Al-Qaeda.
September 30th, 2009 at 5:42 pmThey think America moved to Dallas last January.
September 30th, 2009 at 5:42 pmObama’s America. You mean the one he has repeatedly called for bipartisanship in? The one he has maintained some policies contrary to the desire of his base in? The one that is less hated and distrusted on an international level because he is trying to find some center position that includes trying to be rational and talk about things rather than resorting to bombs and guns? The one where he is acting like a President instead of a drunk cowboy on the streets of 1870 Abilene?
September 30th, 2009 at 5:42 pmThe fact of the matter is that while I give the President credit for trying, the Olympics will not be held in the US for at least a few cycles. It is one clear way the rest of the world can let us know we don’t deserve to be considered a civilized country.
September 30th, 2009 at 5:47 pmHold on, I thought shooting deaths were irrelevant, because the wingnuts claim they skew the US life expectancy.
Now they’re saying these gun deaths matter a whole lot.
I’m confused.
September 30th, 2009 at 5:48 pmPolitically Stupid, I asked you yesterday why you haven’t gone down and signed up to go fight those terrorists for your country, seeing as you are 22 years old and young and strong.
Isn’t that what all you gung ho red blooded Americans who support bushes BS wars are supposed to do? Why are you still here?
September 30th, 2009 at 5:49 pmThese stupid right-wingers and trolls make me think about MOVING to Denmark.

I dunno…these Olympics are likely to attract FOREIGNERS.
September 30th, 2009 at 5:55 pmOh Sean, I thought ‘Capitalism’ was your friend. The Olympics will bring BILLIONS of dollars into our country. Could it be you can’t stand the fact that our President is BLACK and a DEMOCRAT? I bet if Bush or any other wing-nut tries to bring in the Olympics, you and your co-horts would give THEM your blessing.

September 30th, 2009 at 5:57 pmI call him a boy but then most boys grow up to be men.
Hannity also tried to compare Obama’s Copenhagen trip to sending more troops to Afghanistan, saying that since the President was able to make the first decision so quickly, he should similarly make a snap decision about the war.
____________________________________________________________
Lemme get this straight — because President Obama made a “snap” decision to go to Copenhagen, he’s going to make a frivolous decision regarding Afghanistan??? Huh?
C’mon, Sean — why not just say, “President Obama is capable of deciding to fly to Copenhagen to make a pitch for Chicago as host for the Olympic Games. Therefore, he’s capable of deciding to drop nuclear bombs on Russia.”
Makes as much sense…
September 30th, 2009 at 6:00 pmWasn’t some moron GOPer telling us just the other day that “We love our guns here!”, so gun deaths shouldn’t be included in assessments of medical care? I could have sworn . . .
Or maybe he meant “We White Americans love our guns!”
At any rate, listening to a “conservative” demonstrating concern about urban violence, especially black on black violence, is bizarre. Since when did they give a damn?
September 30th, 2009 at 6:01 pmGood. It looks like the GOoPers have given up this ridiculous “American exceptionalism” crap. Cause if we aren’t exceptional to host the Olympics? We ain’t exceptional at all.
September 30th, 2009 at 6:02 pmActually, News Faux, the comment was inappropriate. Suggestions , hints or declarations of violent actions are not acceptable from anyone. To a certain degree, it is the atmosphere created by certain media outlets that sometimes encourages these sorts of outbursts. Thankfully, on this site they are minimal and generally the person responsible apologizes.
I know, you don’t know what that means.

September 30th, 2009 at 6:04 pmPolitically Stupid, you came back, how about answering my question, if you have the guts.
September 30th, 2009 at 6:05 pmAnd don’t you just love Dingbat Purina? “I can’t watch it”, she says. I guess that means she’s never watched the video of the innocent children she dismissed as “collateral damage”.
September 30th, 2009 at 6:05 pmIs this where Beck takes his brain and juggles it???
Maybe that’s why more people tune into Fox than CNN and MSNBC… everyone wants to see if he drops it on the ground… and … walla….it’s been re-adjusted….
September 30th, 2009 at 6:05 pmHannity also tried to compare Obama’s Copenhagen trip to sending more troops to Afghanistan, saying that since the President was able to make the first decision so quickly, he should similarly make a snap decision about the war.

Which means — what, exactly? That President Obama introduced gang violence to our country? That nobody ever got caught in gun crossfire before January 20, 2009? Or are you just trying to imply that President Obama advocates gun violence in general?
The fact that a young man died as a result of gun violence is a tragedy. But if the IOC is looking for a totally crime-free city for the Games, they might as well give up.
September 30th, 2009 at 6:07 pmanother squirrel, dragged in by another couple puppies.
red herring much, righties??
i think so,
the whole place reeks of fish.
September 30th, 2009 at 6:08 pm“At a time of war….” Do these f**ckers think we’ve forgotten everything that Bush did? Or do they take amnesia juice and think we won’t remember that in the middle of his Iraq clusterf**k we see George Bush lounging back in his seat in Beijing “watching” the Olympics. Dog, but I hate these Republican a@@wipes.
September 30th, 2009 at 6:08 pmSeptember 30th, 2009 at 6:09 pm
Poor PoS thinks Obama created this America. Yeah, it had nothing to do with the GOP outsourcing of decent paying jobs, RayGun’s war on drugs, the right wing companies selling guns to inner cities, the GOP bankers laundering money while their rich white friends snorted coke sold to them by desperate unemployed people. The whole host of Conservative values that inflicted poverty, despair and violence on American is endless… Republicans hate America almost as much as they hate Americans!
September 30th, 2009 at 6:09 pmmaybe we should let the olympics go overseas,
no need to have another RIGHTY kill people with a bomb.
or were PS and foxsucker on the turnip truck during the Atlanta games???
righties are America’s answer to the PLO.
September 30th, 2009 at 6:10 pmThe right-wingers are so weird!
They’d rather the Olympics went to another country just so they could gloat about Obama being denied. Sick.
September 30th, 2009 at 6:11 pmAnother funny thing. With all the fat targets in today’s threads, why do the trolls congregate on the one that criticizes FAUX?
I find it curious that they flock to the defense of their oracle. One would think that FAUX can’t defend itself and, since they control their own content, that would lead one to assume that they know they are indefensible and don’t bother to try. They know that the legion of drooling fiends who watch them will spread out across the blogoshphere to defend their BS.
September 30th, 2009 at 6:11 pm62 – can’t resist being a foxsucker??
why?
September 30th, 2009 at 6:12 pmmissmolly,

September 30th, 2009 at 6:14 pmHannity and Beck certainly are deranged – you got that part right Faux News troll.

September 30th, 2009 at 6:22 pmHere’s the deal, stupid FAUX “news” troll. I won’t speak for anyone else but I never threaten violence on line or in person. I have called out other posters who have crossed the line of good taste, I’ve voted violent comments down and even flagged a couple before the new voting system. I’ve seen other posters do the same.
That being said, one can not compare the frustrated anonymous words in an on line discussion and the host of a show on FAUX or hate radio. It also can’t be compared with the rhetoric of lawmakers.
Now, since being a stupid troll is such a handicap, I don’t expect you to actually see the violence in the words of your idols. If you do see it, you condone it. Either way we really don’t much care what you think. The mere fact that you use “FAUX” in your handle is all the proof I need that you are immune to arguments based in objective reality.
September 30th, 2009 at 6:23 pmRacism before country.

Nancy’s drug war has cost us much more than it has helped, just as abstinance is a foolish solution for dealing with teen-age sex.
As I said before, you have no solutions. You just don’t want anyone else to get it right and you will make everyone as miserable as you are if you are allowed to have your way.

Answer the question coward.
September 30th, 2009 at 6:32 pmTheir system of playing different regions of the country against each other is doomed to failure. As 2008 has shown, Dems can make strong gains in areas thought to be safe for Republicans. Do you think they could have made those gains if they were slandering those areas?
If the Republicans ever want to be taken seriously as a national political party again, they’ve got to start showing a basic respect for every region of America. Of course there are people who might be sympathetic to economic or social conservatism living in San Francisco, Chicago, New York, etc, and it might be possible to organize them and pick up at least some districts eventually. But when you continue to make slurs about those areas, you write them off forever. Sure, in the short term you may solidify two districts for every one you pick on, but eventually you run out of districts that you haven’t picked on.

The Republicans will never make any headway in urban areas because the people who live there are the opposite of the the average Republican. Most urban dwellers tend to be minority groups, the elderly, less affluent, and more progressive than Republicans. Republicans have spent decades lambasting urban areas and refusing to help cities with their unique problems. Hannity and the rest of the Republicans hate Chicago because we have not had a Republican mayor since 1930 and no Republican alderman since the 1970’s. The Chicago Dem party is fiscally conservative and socially progressive. We have achieved the longest reigning Dem control over a city government. The reason why is because the city works for the people while having a partnership with the business sector.

September 30th, 2009 at 7:29 pmHannity probably lives (cowers) in the suburbs and commutes to the TV station in Manhattan. His sphincter tightens every time he see a black or hispanic person. I doubt he has every been to a poor urban area so he has no grasp of what cities are trying to deal with on limited budgets.
September 30th, 2009 at 7:38 pmThis is what a REAL journalist would do:
1) research crime rates in the other cities trying to get the olympics.
2) Compare results.
3) Find out if crime rates increase or decrease during the olympics.
4) Interview experts about the security situations and trends in those cities.
Hmm… didn’t hear about fox doing anything like that. They do absolutely NO research on anything at all. Although the do interview a lot of people who know nothing about anything.

September 30th, 2009 at 8:12 pmSo let me get this straight…
Hannity thinks that one incident in Chicago involving the tragic and violent murder of a teenage boy — a murder which, take note, Hannity is himself conveniently choosing to exploit for the sake of his own agenda — is enough to make Chicago an undesirable and inappropriate candidate as a potential host for the 2012 Summer Games?
Give. Me. A. Break.
Does Hannity seriously expect people to believe that other cities elsewhere in the world which are of similar size to Chicago don’t experience violence of this sort on at least an intermittent basis? Does Hannity, in fact, have any idea what the rates for murder and violent death are like for most major cities in the world? Many of the deaths which occur here in the U.S. are marked by little more than a paragraph or two in the local paper — or perhaps a 15-second report on the evening news — because the people in question were perceived as being individuals of no particular significance. It’s by no means my intention to make light of this young man’s death — far from it — unfortunately, the fact is that incidents of violence and murder do occur from time to time in most if not all of the world’s major cities and that innocent bystanders (some of them children or teenagers) are occasionally killed. Chicago is hardly alone in this. If a recent incident of violent murder were enough to render a city ineligible as a potential host for the Olympic games, I daresay that at least half of the world’s largest cities would have to be disqualified.
No…Hannity has only one reason for making such a big issue out of this. He’s using this as an excuse to attack Obama — plain and simple. The truth of the matter is that as far as Hannity et al. are concerned, Obama is damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t — if he had not made the trip, no doubt these folks would be criticizing him anyway by saying “why hasn’t Obama made any attempt to bid for the 2012 Olympic Games? Why doesn’t he want to help America?”
September 30th, 2009 at 8:18 pmAlthough, depending on which flavor of insanity the particular Reichwhiner is suffering from, it makes sense to complain about Olympic planning for 2016.
Some are convinced that Jebus will destroy the Earth before then so, it’s a waste of time because they won’t be here. The rest are hoping for a civil war so, it’s a waste of time because no one would be crazy enough to attend the Olympics during a civil war.
September 30th, 2009 at 8:22 pmYou nailed it, Bluestocking. I might add that Hannity is eager to ignore events where crazed Reichwhiners have gone on calculated, intricately planned, killing sprees that target cops and children and “those people”.
He has to take that stance though because those we call “terrorists” are his loyal listeners and followers.
September 30th, 2009 at 8:27 pmI notice Hannity isn’t mentioning the “unworthiness” of Santa Barbara CA. because of that time he killed a hooker there [citation needed].
This is just another example of wingnuts’ inability to cognitively process definitions. In wingnut syllogisms, Obama = Chicago, Obama = Bad, therefore Chicago = Bad.
.
pags2 says:
Most urban dwellers tend to be minority groups, the elderly, less affluent, and more progressive than Republicans.
It’s not even just that, it’s more basic: most urban dwellers know what it’s like to have to live with other people who are not exactly like them. Pure population density breeds a need for basic ethics, which the right-wing mind lacks.

I guess this means that the Chicago police don’t have guns, hmmmmmm? (You’re the one who made that outrageous statement, fella — not me.) Or are you perhaps implying that every single member of the Chicago police force is corrupt and therefore a gang member or a “bad guy”?
Oh, and by the way…as other people on this thread have already pointed out, I think you’ll find that the victim in question was beaten to death — not shot — so your posts regarding Chicago’s gun laws are in no way germane to this discussion other than in your own mind. How this boy was killed is really rather immaterial and inconsequential in any case. What matters is the fact that an intelligent young man with future prospects was brutally, tragically, and senselessly killed…and that Hannity has cynically and shamelessly attempted to capitalize on that death for purely political and self-serving reasons.

October 1st, 2009 at 9:04 amWhat’s confusing, to me, about the entire republican’t, conservatude, religulous white wing, bat-guano machine, is: Are they really atheists pretending to be xians? I mean, with all the scatology they vomit as truth on a daily basis, you’d think they’d be in fear of how jeebus would judge them when st.pete, the bailiff, asks them how they plea on their final court date.
…it’s a puzzlement.
October 1st, 2009 at 9:28 amHannity also tried to compare Obama’s Copenhagen trip to sending more troops to Afghanistan, saying that since the President was able to make the first decision so quickly, he should similarly make a snap decision about the war. — Pilotshark
*****************************************************
I’m with you, Pilotshark…try as I might, I simply can’t see how bringing the Olympics to Chicago would be likely to result in people dying. If you look at it from an objective point of view — meaning, of course, one which isn’t already determined to find fault with Obama no matter what decision he might have made — the potential advantages very likely outweighed the risks regardless of whether he had chosen to make the trip or stay here and focus his attention on other matters. No doubt, choosing not to make the trip would have saved some time and money in the short term — resources that arguably could have been invested elsewhere. However, it would also probably have eliminated most if not all possibility of the growth which would inevitably be stimulated if the U.S. should win the bid. True, it’s possible that we won’t — but considering the prospective payoff down the line, Obama may have decided that it was worth a calculated risk. (Besides, in all fairness, it’s a bit difficult for conservatives to argue convincingly against spending when most of them made nary of peep of protest while Bush was spending money with little or no oversight.)
By contrast, the cost-benefit analysis of sending more troops to Afghanistan is not as obvious — largely because the costs involve not only money, but also certain injury and loss of life. That sort of decision isn’t one which a responsible leader should be making lightly. The actions of the previous administration again clash somewhat with the conservative argument. When the Bush administration first began agitating in favor of going to war in Iraq, they made many confident declarations which were later proved to be highly inaccurate at best — that most of the Iraqi people would be on our side, that the objectives would be achieved within months (possibly even weeks), and that oil revenues would pay for it all. One reason why these claims failed to manifest is because in their eagerness to go to war and look tough, they chose to ignore the advice of several experienced and high-ranking military officials — one of those pieces of advice being, ironically, “put more troops on the ground at the beginning.” Had they been a little more cautious and a little less hasty, they might not have been compelled later on to rely on such statements as “you go to war with the army you have — not the one you might want or wish to have.” (Let’s remember why this particular statement was made — it was in response to a complaint from a U.S. soldier whose men were forced to rely on their own improvised and jury-rigged solutions to protect their vehicles and themselves from IEDs). We might have prevented at least a few lives from being lost — and not only those of our own soldiers and contractors, but also of Iraqi civilians.

October 1st, 2009 at 11:05 amHannity is so full of sh** it’s coming out his ears.
Too bad his audience of Red State trailer folks and senior citizens can’t recognize a true New York City con artist when they see one.
Most New Yorkers realize what he is, a classic New York B.S. artist.
October 1st, 2009 at 11:32 amFrom the Chicago Sun Times. Some legitimate reasons Chicagoans might want to pass on the Olympics so they can pay for…more police, parks, firemen, lower taxes. Hell, the city politicians can’t even decide whether or not they want it.
“Chicago taxpayers must spend $100 million to transform the old Michael Reese Hospital site on the Near South Side into an Olympic Village.
On Wednesday, Mayor Daley’s Olympic bid team confirmed the $100 million pricetag to install roads, sewers and utilities, raising questions about how the Chicago 2016 organizing committee and Daley can continually say the games won’t cost taxpayers a dime — especially at a time when the city is dealing with a mounting fiscal crisis.
While Chicago won’t know until October if it beat out its competition to win the 2016 Summer Games, the city has agreed to create a tax-increment-financing (TIF) district surrounding Michael Reese to generate the $100 million subsidy.
TIFs re-direct taxes away from schools, parks and other local government agencies bankrolled by property taxes. Property taxes within a TIF district are frozen at existing levels for 23 years.
The decision to draw a $100 million subsidy from the tax-increment-financing (TIF) — or create a TIF within a TIF to generate even more money — comes at the worst possible time for Chicago taxpayers.
Most of the city’s unionized employees have been forced to swallow furlough days and other concessions to eliminate a threatened $300 million year-end shortfall. More than 430 members of two unions that refused to make concessions have been laid off.
Next year threatens to be even worse. Daley’s preliminary 2010 budget has a $520 million gap that can only be closed with service cuts, tax increases or a combination of the two. Some aldermen want to use unallocated TIF money to eliminate that shortfall.
Ald. Joe Moore (49th) said the $100 million subsidy “doesn’t come as a shock,” given the expense of building new streets, water and sewer lines to the Michael Reese campus.
But, he said, “It begs the whole question about whether this is a good time for the Olympics, given our financial straits.”
