Today at the Washington Ideas Forum sponsored by the Atlantic, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) sharply criticized “talk radio, MoveOn.org, the 24-hour news cycle” for the polarization in politics. He then specifically mentioned Fox News hosts Bill O’Reilly and Glenn Beck:
Can you imagine writing the Constitution — you know, O’Reilly says Ben Franklin’s giving in on something. Can you imagine having to do that in this environment? [Graham said]
Without missing a beat, The Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg next asked for Graham’s thoughts on Glenn Beck.
“Only in America can you make that much money crying,” Graham said.
Graham also claimed that Beck is “not aligned with any party as far as I can tell. He’s aligned with cynicism. And there’s always been a market for cynicism.” Watch it:
In recent weeks, there has been a conservative backlash against Beck. Right-wing radio host Mark Levin has called him “pathetic,” former Bush adviser Peter Wehner has said he’s “harmful to the conservative movement,” Rush Limbaugh characterized his role promoting the 9/12 march as “cheap and disingenuous,” and conservative pundit David Frum has warned conservatives against succumbing to Beck’s “mob rule.”

October 1st, 2009 at 2:41 pmHey bin Gleck! While you are under the bus, could you change the oil?
October 1st, 2009 at 2:41 pm“Backlashing”???
Good thing there’s no claim to be Linguistically Superior~!
Beck is making all conservatives look like whiney, petty, mean-spirited drama queens. Of course, I’m not sure that is such hard work that it should result in as high a salary as Beck makes. Minimum wage would be too much. Perhaps Beck should work only for tips for serving his “food for thought”.
October 1st, 2009 at 2:41 pmGraham had to act a little high brow for an Atlantic forum. Besides, Beck insulted Lindsey’s boyfriend. On the other hand, if Beck isn’t aligned with a political party it is only because the steaming pile of raging anarchy sitting where the Republics used to be is no longer recognizable as a party and can only be defined as a mob.
October 1st, 2009 at 2:42 pmA career of slander and seditious mob incitement is bound to be short-lived.
October 1st, 2009 at 2:42 pmI’m betting Beck will escape to rehab and come back for round two,

Sen. Graham takes jab at Glenn Beck: ‘Only in America can you make that much money crying.’
– - I said about a week ago here that Beck’s meteoric rise is now arcing downward. He fancies himself a real-life latter day Howard Beale, except Beale was a character written by an avowed liberal, Paddy Chayefsky.
It’s as ludicrous as wingnuts citing Jack Nicholson’s tirade against “weak” liberals in A Few Good Men, another film written by a hardcore progressive, Aaron Sorkin and directed by very liberal Rob Reiner.
October 1st, 2009 at 2:45 pmHe converted to Mormonism, for crying out loud. All you need to know about Mormons you can find by researching the “Mountain Meadows Massacre.”
October 1st, 2009 at 2:46 pmCaption: ‘Liberals scare me…I think I just shit my pants.
October 1st, 2009 at 2:50 pm16.
And Beale railed against the multi-national corporations. Something Beck would never do, lest he upset his employers. He may pay lip service to the “populist masses” but he’s a corporate whore all the same. And, 17. Yeah. I find Mormonism ridiculous…as I find elements of all religions ridiculous. Still, no need for the bigotry.
Predictibly, right-wingers and their ilk are calling Graham a leebrul and demanding he join the Dems. Sadly, with the way Lincoln’s been voting, ‘ol Lindsey wouldn’t be the most conversative of the bunch. Hey, maybe we can trade Senators!
October 1st, 2009 at 2:51 pmGraham also claimed that Beck is “not aligned with any party as far as I can tell.
That’s true. The Republicans are no longer a party. They are an insurgency.

October 1st, 2009 at 2:52 pm17 – I saw the show about that massacre last night on History.

October 1st, 2009 at 2:53 pmSo Beck was trying to give the Repubs a break by badmouthing McCain so they could say he’s not one of us. Not buying it. He’s yours. Cowards.
October 1st, 2009 at 2:56 pmGraham is among the few Republicans who have come to realize that people like Beck and Limbaugh are going to hurt the party’s image outside of the southern states. It is too late to try and reform the image because there is more than ample video of Republicans associating with the teabaggers. The Republicans will be tied to all the kooks in the next election which will affect the ability of the party to make inroads in Congress.
October 1st, 2009 at 2:56 pmBeck’s at least a novelty. Limbaugh et al have always seemed old fashioned to me, since I go back to the ’60s and can remember Joe Pyne. But this is the first time I’ve seen anyone make a living by impersonating an adult bedwetter. Sort of like a televised Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, but with only one drunk allowed to speak.
October 1st, 2009 at 2:58 pmshoeless at 2:51 pm
I’ve been leaning toward the use of the terms “Fifth Column” and “quislings”.
October 1st, 2009 at 2:58 pmWith the help of Beck et al, there is going to be a third political party in the US. It will be called the Republican Party.
October 1st, 2009 at 2:58 pmAll you need to know about Mormons you can find by researching the “Mountain Meadows Massacre.”
October 1st, 2009 at 2:59 pm——
I like the idea that someone could be dumb enough to “lose” golden tablets found under a rock. Pure genius…
lindsey’s just trying to carve out a little chunk of credibility to hang onto (and it’s available, since not a single other R is interested),
but if he keeps trying to applaud when “the team” isn’t applauding,
he may become another crossover like specter.

I do want to believe Graham when he speaks about unity, but it’s hard to really believe it. That being said, I’m glad he stands for the belief that what lies on the other side of the mountain is something better than what lies on this side. Beck’s a firm believer that what lies on the other side is a quagmire.
I’m not sure if Graham is criticizing all of punditry, but cynicism is certainly a destructive force in our nation. Yes, yes, some may scream that there were those on the left also exhibiting cynicism, but I don’t believe those voices were as unfounded as those coming from the right.

October 1st, 2009 at 4:23 pmAll you need to know about muslims is to research “terrorists,” right? — News Fox
*****************************************************
Wrong. Sorry, NF…but no. The fact that you believe the word “Muslim” to be interchangeable with the word “terrorist” means that you’ve never bothered to do any research on either one — because regardless of whether you want to accept this or not, the fact nevertheless remains that not all Muslims are terrorists and not all terrorists are Muslims. You do realize, I trust, that this so-called logic of yours suggests that Timothy McVeigh must have been a Muslim?
One of the reasons why people like you believe that all Muslims are terrorists is because of the fact that for the past two decades or more, an overwhelming majority of the American media across the board (not only the news but film and television as well) has almost never depicted them any other way.

Huh, I guess your Rino’s are doing fine… it’s you party that’s endangered, huh?
October 1st, 2009 at 4:27 pmThanks for the link, joe. This bit deserves repeating.
There are some programs on FOX that are not only NOT fair and balanced, they’re commentary shows. They don’t have to be, but they brag about how fair and balanced they are. They don’t cover rallies and tea parties, they cheerlead rallies and tea parties, and as a journalist I am totally against that.
October 1st, 2009 at 4:33 pmBernard Goldberg
Is Bernie Goldberg a “RINO” now?
How about Bll0? He allowed that “RINO” Goldberg to tell the truth about FAUX. Will Bill0 become a “RINO” if he invites Bernie back?
October 1st, 2009 at 4:35 pmGrahams’s response to any question about the Beckerhead should have been one of two return questions.
1. “Who is Glenn Beck”?
or
2. “Why would I know anything about Glenn Beck”?
But instead Linseed exposed his being “strangely drawn” to the Beckerhead. For some its that Beckerhead animal magnetism (the animal being a lemming).
Come away way with me an will will fall off the cliff together.
October 1st, 2009 at 4:37 pmConservative Guy said,
Here we see more evidence of the coming split within the Republican Party. Anyone not following the more radical, more fascist agenda will be shunned.
This is both good and bad. It is good because it will cause a split within the Republican Party, as it becomes segregated into moderate and wacko. It is bad because the wackos will probably be very violent anarchists that demand Americans do exactly what they want, or they will blow things up or shoot people.
October 1st, 2009 at 4:37 pmPolitically Superior says:
Conservatives are backlashing against beck because he said ” McCain would’ve been worse”
I think that’s a big part of it.
However, earlier this year they tried to distance themselves from Limbaugh but ultimately failed because his “operation chaos” fans messaged their offices en masse, forcing them to retract statements like “he’s just an entertainer.” While currently popular and often acting as an MSM newsmaker, Beck doesn’t have that strong of a longstanding fan base to insulate him from negative comments from the right.
.
godistwaddle says:
He converted to Mormonism, for crying out loud. All you need to know about Mormons…
I think we can criticize Beck plenty without getting into religious intolerance. I don’t think there’s a religion in existence – or any kind of belief system, for that matter – that doesn’t have plenty of historical blood on its hands.
.
News Fox says:
Lindsey who?
He’s a United States Senator. It’s a little more important than having a TV show.
.
conservative guy says:
Lindsey Graham is a RINO…
Pretty much. I’ll trade you him for Baucus. Deal?

The Republicans have forgotten the adage:

AIO says:
What’s more amazing is how Beck, Hannity, Limbaugh etc. make money being that batsh¡t crazy…and compulsive liars to boot.
Beck and Limbaugh obviously have issues that make them the way they are. The substance abuse is only the tip of the iceberg.
I think Hannity is crazy, but not the same kind of crazy as Beck and Limbaugh. He’s more crazy like a fox.
October 1st, 2009 at 4:52 pmHe’s a classic New York City bull**** artist conning the rubes and the senior citizens.
he sure is…
ha-HA!
October 1st, 2009 at 5:03 pmI think that Becky’s religion is a fair issue, ElBruce. He constantly talks about God and religious principles but never informs his audience that his religion is not main-stream, or even evangelical, Christianity. His poor victims don’t even realize there’s a difference and I think the deception is intentional. (NOTE: Considering the fact that Becky is a moron, it is possible that he doesn’t realize the difference either.)
I also think it’s fair, in any discussion of Mormonism, to mention the hostility between the LDS and the United States. It was essentially founded as an insurrection. Is it not possible that Becky is surreptitiously trying to feed a revolutionary movement that he might see as advantageous to the insurrectionist, secessionist, movement within the LDS?
It’s difficult to discuss the social impact of religions but, they must be considered. And they gain particular importance when unscrupulous people are actively using religious differences to foment unrest, as all too many are doing in America today.
I must confess that, as a committed realist, I find all religions highly implausible and inherently dishonest. But, the LDS is a step beyond most.

Lindsey Graham is a RINO POS.
You think everyone is a POS because you project a lot! ;)
October 1st, 2009 at 5:30 pmPointing out Becky’s religion is fair from another perspective too. It was just a few short years ago when Mormons preached that blacks and all peoples of color were the spawn of Satan. The residue of that hatred preached from the pulpit still taints Becky’s view of President Obama.
Or I may be wrong. Maybe he came to be the sick racist POS all by himself.

But you are just a plain old R POS.
October 1st, 2009 at 5:38 pm#167 deal. To all the libs on this blog, I’m not a Republican I’m an Independent. Got it?
October 1st, 2009 at 8:04 pmYeah. It’s amazing how the stupid trolls have all become “independents” as soon as Flippy and Bible Spice got sent packing. Though I suppose it’s perfectly logical to abandon support for a losing team.
October 1st, 2009 at 8:09 pmNot even a Conservative Guy is willing to admit he is a Republican. Talk about a disasterous reputation the Republicans are stuck with.
October 1st, 2009 at 8:11 pmHay conservative guy you said:
“Lindsey Graham is a RINO POS”
Then you said:
“To all the libs on this blog, I’m not a Republican I’m an Independent. Got it?”
So what gives here conservative guy? If you are not a Republican why do you care about what Graham says? Doesn’t sound like what an Independent would say.

I’ll grant that if you discuss issues from a theological perspective, disclosing any religious affiliations you maintain is only appropriate. But beyond that, discussion of that affiliation is not. The LDS of today is a far from the LDS of the 1800’s. All mainstream religions start out at odds with the society around them, and mellow out somewhat over time. The LDS may be younger than most, but they seem to have mostly bridged that gap between crazy cult and responsible mainstream religion by this point. I have no particular love for them and there are specific things they do that I would take issue with, as there are with most religions. But most current criticisms I hear of them (”they wear funny underwear!” etc) just have the ring of bigoted slurs in my ears. The rest are past history, and no religion is free from reprehensible deeds and beliefs in their past.

“Independent” is the last thing that you are. All your opinions come with bar codes on them, fresh from the FOX factory.

October 1st, 2009 at 9:25 pmIf you liberals want to get rid of the conservative talk shows and just have liberal talk shows, just pass a law. You have a filibuster-proof majority in Congress. Who’s going to stop you?

Absolutely not. Unlike you, I actually believe in the First Amendment, as well as the rest of what the U.S. Constitution actually says.

It’s not a who, it’s a what: the Constitution. Y’know, that pesky thing the Republicans – and not the Democrats – are always trying to get around.
