Pelosi: ‘There’s no reason for Mr. Grayson to apologize. If anyone should apologize, everyone should apologize.’

Republican lawmakers have been pressing Rep. Alan Grayson (D-FL) to apologize for saying that the Republican alternative health care proposals would force sick Americans to “die quickly” (even though their own members have been making absurdly false claims about Democratic plans). Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) said that Grayson should “do the right thing and recognize the comments that he made were disrespectful to the House and to the decorum.” Today in her weekly press conference, however, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said that there’s no reason for Grayson to apologize:

Apparently Republicans hold Democrats to a higher standard than they hold members of their own party. … There’s no reason for Mr. Grayson to apologize. If anyone should apologize, everyone should apologize.

Yesterday, Grayson did say he was sorry — to all the people who have lost their lives because they didn’t have health insurance (almost 45,000 Americans each year).

    Well said.

Rachel Maddow showed clips last night of loads of Republican congresspeople saying Democrats want to kill people—that’s why they are proposing healthcare reform.

The hypocracy of the Repugs is mindboggling.

  4. Fred says:

Well, well, well. Dems are standing up for each other. Cheers.

  5. 5th Estate says:

    Come on Grayson!
If Joe Wilson had to apologize for lying by saying Obama was lying, then obvs. you should apologize for stating facts!

You democrats won the elections, now get over it already and stop trying to act like you’re supposed to be in charge! /snark

  6. EnnuiDivine says:

Only took 2 and a half years, but the Dem leadership is finally showing backbone. Hopefully, this no-nonsense attitude will permeate to the Senate and Reid will get tough.

    Yeah. Anyway, go Pelosi!

  7. USNclerk says:

It only takes one voice speaking the truth loud enough for people to say “Hey, he\she is right!” Kudos to Grayson for being that voice.

  8. Keith says:

If you look at the evidence, the current US healthcare system DOES cause people to die quicker—-compared to other developed countries. What are we—about 50th in “life expectancy”?

  9. tombaker says:

I want to see Grayson go head-to-head with Cantor on the House floor.

  10. fergus says:

Rep. Grayson has already apologized to the Rebubics, hasn’t he? After all, he apologized to the people who died from lack of health insurance, right? And the Republic Party is ethically dead on the question of health insurance, right? So, it stands to reason that he has apologized to the Repubics, right? Or not.

  11. P.D. says:

MSM Faux Outrage is obvious. ALL morning everyone fron Mika to all ther other talking heads were going on and on about HOW Grayson said it, and not WHAT he said. “OH my God he said Halucast!” Not, “Oh my God, thousands of Americans dead a year!” This is insane. Kudos to you Mr. Grayson! You had the balls to say what MILIONS of Americans are thinking!

  12. evangenital says:

Grayson has no need to apologize.

The repiggies have every need to apologize for all their lying, scare-mongering and treachery.

  13. Shayne says:

    Nice one, Nancy.

Now let’s work on the NAFTA thing that you voted for and later said didn’t turn out like many thought it would. Look’s like you are in the position to do something about it now.

  15. Rich H says:

Why on earth would he apologize for stating the facts? I’d rather die (and probably will) before I’d agologize to a republican.

Now, I’ll apologize for reposting my thoughts at the end of a dead thread.

If we go with the number of 44,000 deaths per year and start from when Bush was elected and go out another eight years if reform fails to pass, the total would be 704,000 people. That’s not counting the probable millions of premature deaths caused by denial of care, nor does it take into account the uninsured deaths prior to 2000.

With apologies to the victims of WWII and the native peoples of the Americas, I think the term is accurate.

If not, we could go with genocide or plainly note it’s a jihad (with their god being money) against the american people.

  16. Wayne A. Schneider says:

I applaud Mr. Grayson for his comments that started this whole ruckus, but I do believe (and I think he agrees) that using the word “holocaust” during his apology to those who died was a bit too much. Still, the Republicans have said pretty much the same thing that Grayson said, so it’s hard to understand what they are so upset about.

While it is true that everyone is entitled to his opinion, no one is automatically entitled to have his opinion accepted as totally valid. Opinions are deemed valid when they are based on facts, not ideology or fantasies or wishful thinking. Republicans act as though their ideological beliefs are true, therefore their opinions should be respected as valid and meaningful. Nothing could be further from the truth.

I can respect the fact that you may have an opinion that differs from mine, but that doesn’t mean I have to respect your opinion itself.

Nice speech, Nancy, but you are missing the point. When will you, Nancy, the rest of the Democrats, and the Republican Party are going to publicly apologize to those uninsured Americans that died and the Americans that continue to struggle without health insurance and do the right thing and serve the American people which is why all the lawmakers were put in office to do.
