This afternoon, Elliott Abrams, Deputy National Security Adviser under President Bush, appeared on Fox News to discuss U.S. policy towards Iran. Abrams pled guilty to misleading Congress about the Iran-Contra scandal under Reagan and handled Iran policy under Bush.
When asked if any recent President has had “a successful strategy with Iran,” Abrams implicitly admitted his own decades-long failure. “No, I don’t think we’ve really had any successful strategies with Iran,” Abrams responded. “And you know, meanwhile they’ve been building up their nuclear program and missile program.” But Obama recently established the first high-level diplomatic engagement with Iran in 30 years, which produced results quicker than expected.
But Abrams, “the neocon’s neocon,” still clings to his long-running desire to bomb Iran. And to justify his view that military action against Iran is the prudent course, Abram told Fox News that the Iranian people would accept it:
FOX: 59 percent of respondents to our Fox News poll say that force should be used. How would Tehran react to that?
ABRAMS: It’s a very big question, Alisyn. My own view is that most Iranians now — after June, after the stealing of the election — would not rally around the flag. People used to say that — that if there’s an attack on Iran, you know the population is going to get patriotic. But that’s what Americans would do. I don’t know that it’s what Iranians are going to do, considering the way that regime is hated in Iran.
Watch it:
Certainly, the Iranian regime does have a great deal of opposition on the ground. But that doesn’t mean they would accept bombs falling on their country. For an Iranian populace that has previously expressed concern that the U.S. is trying to humiliate them, Abrams comments aren’t very reassuring.
A new poll of the Iranian people demonstrates a great potential for the diplomatic engagement that Obama is pursuing. World Public Opinion find that “two-thirds of Iranians would favor their government precluding the development of nuclear weapons in exchange for the lifting of international sanctions against Iran.” 60 percent of the Iranian public favors “full, unconditional negotiations” between their government and the United States.
The stupid again.

October 2nd, 2009 at 3:48 pmDoes Jewish, Israel supporter, Eliot Abrams have a conflict of interest here since Israel would supposedly benefit from any war with Iran?
October 2nd, 2009 at 3:49 pmIs he saying they would be throwing flowers at us if we invaded? Sure sounds like it.
October 2nd, 2009 at 3:50 pm“Elliott Abrams: Iranian People Wouldn’t Oppose A Military Attack On Their Country”
Stupid is as stupid does. Must have been smoking too many dutchies. Pass the popcorn please..
Sorry OT. I hope TP post this article. Hat tip to Crooks and Liars:
ABC News explores this conveniently located facility in more detail today. It sounds like a pretty sweet deal for lawmakers.
This fall while members of Congress toil in the U.S. Capitol, working to decide how or even whether to reform the country’s health care system, one floor below them an elaborate Navy medical clinic — described by those who have seen it as something akin to a modern community hospital — will be standing by, on-call and ready to provide Congress with some of the country’s best and most efficient government-run health care.
Formally called the Office of the Attending Physician, the clinic — and at least six satellite offices — bills its mission as one of emergency preparedness and public health. Each day, it stands ready to handle medical emergencies, biological attacks and the occasional fainting tourist visiting Capitol Hill.
Officially, the office acknowledges these types of services, including providing physicals to Capitol police officers and offering flu shots to congressional staffers. But what is rarely discussed outside the halls of Congress is the office’s other role — providing a wealth of primary care medical services to senators, representatives and Supreme Court justices.
Through interviews with former employees and members of Congress, as well as extensive document searches, ABC News has learned new details about the services offered by the Office of Attending Physician to members of Congress over the past few years, from regular visits by a consulting chiropractor to on-site physical therapy.
“A member walked in and was generally walked right back into a physician’s office. They get good care. They are not rushed. They are examined thoroughly,” said Eduardo Balbona, an internist in Jacksonville, Fa., who worked as a staff physician in the OAP from 1993 to 1995.
The Office of the Attending Physician includes at least four Navy doctors as well as at least a dozen medical and X-ray technicians, nurses, and a pharmacist. When a specialist is brought in, members pay no additional costs.
Indeed, lawmakers receive top-notch, wait-free care, and money is largely no object. Members pay a flat annual fee of $503, and it covers all expenses — without submitting claim forms to their insurer. Despite soaring costs throughout the health care system, prices have been largely stagnant in the Office of the Attending Physician for 17 years.
All for $503 bucks a year yet they don’t want affordable government care and public option for Americans????

October 2nd, 2009 at 4:02 pmFAUX has crossed the line between stupid and evil. Anyone who actually knows anything about the region and gives a shit about the U.S. military personnel would reach the conclusion that military action against Iran would, most likely, result in the immediate rise of every single Persian against our forces already there. It would take a miracle to extract more than a small percentage of those troops. It would be our Stalingrad and could, conceivably, eliminate us as a viable world power.

A neo-con is a neo-con, a war-monger is a war-monger. There are plenty Christian neocons who are just as blindly supportive of Israel. Don’t spin this as Jews run amok.
That said,
Abrams is a damn moron. Iraqis despised Saddam…and, contrary to what the neocons believed, they were none too fond of us, either. These people live in a fantasy world.

Maybe someone like Hooman Majd, who actually understands the life and culture of Iran and has written beautifully about it. I can imagine what his reaction would be to a moronic statement suggesting that they’re not really patriotic, and that they hate their president so much they’d welcome an attack.
It’s much easier to ask someone like Abrams, who knows nothing about the country and is a rabid Zionist, for an opinion on the subject. Why not ask one of our trolls; the response would be no more stupid than Abrams’.

I agree, but it seems the neo-cons are in love with the military industrial complex and the idea that subjecting a population to death and destruction will make them agree with your view of the world and then be your friends forever.
Why do they now have amnesia about the wonderful aftermath of the bush/cheney/rumsfeld “shock and awe” in Iraq which was predicted to bring the middle east countries crawling to bush/cheney/remsfeld asking to be pals for life?

Hmm, where have I heard this before?
October 2nd, 2009 at 5:02 pmThis is just another ridiculous statement by a neocon who is seething with anger that Obama is accomplishing what Bush could not in foreign policy. Obama has pulled the rug out from under Iran and now the rest of the nations are lining up against Iran. An attack on Iran would have the reverse effect. Obama will be always be criticized on foreign policy by the neocons because they do not believe in diplomacy as a means to an end.
October 2nd, 2009 at 5:04 pmI guess we didn’t get enough of being pelted with flowers and chocolates in Iraq?
October 2nd, 2009 at 5:08 pmThis guy is insane. He would be committed if he a)came close to a weapon and b)threatened to do unto someone in his own town what he threatens to do to the Iranians.
And just what benefit is a war with Iran to the Isrealis. They are surely to become a target of either accidental or intentioned attack. Possibly this guy is a thinly disguised Arammageddonist who thinks that a major war in the Biblical Middle East will bring some kind of messianic salvation. Speak of dangerous ideas.
As for the nationalistic fervor of Iranians and Persians in general, just about the only thing that could unite them at this point is an attack from the West in general or the US in particular. This guy is either intentionally weaving falsehoods or is totally out of touch with reality. Either way it calls into question the sanity and intention of anyone giving him more than thirty seconds of air time.
October 2nd, 2009 at 5:10 pmIt’s a happy, uncomplicated world the American Exceptionalists live in, isn’t it? The only problem is…

In my age range, for Level 2(as close to Gold Congress Care as it comes) I would be charged $99/mo. Or $1188/ Yr. Then add dental and vision…
… Sure it cuts the profit beast(Insurance Co) off at the head and rewards the doctor for his/her work, but the cost is still somewhat difficult for some people. Especially the people who need dental and vision along with general care.

If I’m not mistaken the illustrious Mr. Abrams was first on the list of signers. PNACs new incarnation, FPI is now trying the same letter writing coaxing with President Obama that they tried on Clinton. Their aim is to goad the President into a seriously more hawkish approach in the ME. FPI’s letter to Obama also includes signatures from geniuses like Sarah Palin and Karl Rove

As in, a variation on the same theme which members of the Bush administration used to promote the War In Iraq? “The Iraqi people will welcome our troops with flowers”, or something along those lines…
If memory serves, that argument didn’t quite prove itself true, in part because one flaw which neoconservatives share is their complete and utter refusal to consider (never mind accept) the possibility that the world might not choose to march in perfectly synchronized lockstep with their wishes and schemes. It often seems as if they almost never make contingency plans — has anyone else noticed this? — because it quite honestly never occurs to them that their plans might not work and that they might not get (or even deserve to get) exactly what they want.

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:47 pmHey, wingnuts in America hate and fear the U.S. Government and its current leadership. Does that mean they’d welcome the U.S. being invaded?
October 3rd, 2009 at 2:58 amAs I read this it occurred to me that either Mr. Abrams didn’t think back far enough or is deliberately misleading. You see the Reagan administration collaborated with the new revolutionary Iranian regime to release the embassy hostages to make Carter the villain and his reelection more difficult and Reagan as the hero and then the new president with a landslide victory. He wasn’t really collaborating with them for mutual positive results because both sides wanted a polar enemy for their own reasons. That policy may only now be getting its first challenge with the Obama administrations cautious attempt at diplomacy and the Iranian shaky election results in the eyes of the world making them possibly more open. Imagine that, the far right has actually been acting in a way, as an unsuspecting pawn, for Iran who they vilify. They have given the mullahs their “Great Satan” for almost 30 years. No guess where it’s going. We just have to keep watching.
