Soon after news broke that the International Olympic Committee had rejected Chicago’s bid to host the 2016 Olympics, which President Obama had personally lobbied for, Weekly Standard blogger John McCormack published a celebratory post on the magazine’s blog, titled “Chicago Loses! Chicago Loses!.” McCormack wrote that “Cheers erupt at WEEKLY STANDARD world headquarters”:

But the post has now been changed. The reference to cheers have been removed and the title has been shortened to a non-exclamatory “Chicago Loses.” The current post neither acknowledges nor explains the changes that were made.
Wow, could it be this goon actually got caught cheering for Chicago losing after Obama tried to get the win? something smells like some nut-cup cheering just because Obama lost something.
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:16 pmThe Weekly Standard promoted McCormack’s celebration on Twitter, saying “Chicago Loses! Chicago Loses!”

October 2nd, 2009 at 1:22 pmJust goes to show that the righties want Obma, and Dems, to fail so badly, they’ll cheer for ANYTHING they think will do just that, even if it hurts this country…
Now… if the Weakly can only find some way to link this to Obama’s birth certificate, Michael Moore’s weight problem, and ACORN… it’ll be a veritable fiesta of wingnut jubilation heading into the weekend.
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:22 pmThe Republic Party, “Hurrah! America lost a bid that would have created thousands of desperately needed jobs and brought in billions in revenue!! HURRAH!!”
If a major American city were to be demolished in a terrorist attack, I have no doubt that the Reich would be cheering in the streets. ANYTHING to try to make our President, and in hand, our Nation look bad…anything.
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:22 pmYou think that that’s bad, Limbaugh is having a shindig.
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:22 pmI find myself being more and more confounded by the lack of thinking these people show in spewing this kind of hateful, divisive garbage they do.
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:23 pmThis is pathetic. Our country loses out being a host of the Olympics and these guys cheer? Billions would have flowed into our economy, and these guys cheer? I thought the Conservatives LOVED capitalism. The fact is, if Obama DIDN’T go to Demark, these guys STILL would have blamed him. Obama is damned if he does and he is damned if doesn’t.

October 2nd, 2009 at 1:26 pmAs I had posted earlier (in the Mission Accomplished for Conservatives)…it seems to apply here as well:
“It is simply bizarre that there are SO many, that spend SO much time in print, radio and broadcast, that have SO much power, money and “status“…hate America for doing anything that does NOT involve putting people in prison, stripping Americans of their Rights, spying, lying, cheating, suppressing, the military and, of course, killing people.”
They hate, hate and hate some more. They support nothing for America except their self-serving desire to dictate and control. They are not one breath better than any nutty dicator of any number of countrys. They want to control every moment and aspect of your life and will stop at nothing to do it.
Normal America…WAKE UP.

October 2nd, 2009 at 1:30 pmSee, I don’t understand this.
Hosting the Olympics would have had real world applications in this country. Not only would it have immediately put people to work, it would have boosted the economy and tourism to and in this country between now and 2016. Americans would be spending money to travel to Chicago, spend money in Chicago, etc.
These are things to root against? Shakes head in wonder.

October 2nd, 2009 at 1:31 pmAh the Unpatriotic Right reveling in America’s failures. What next?
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:32 pmI personally thought Rio had the inside track. First, the South American continent has never held them and I also think the anti-American forces, generated after exposing the lies going into Iraq, had a lot to do with it. Cheering because the United States loses anything seems stupid to me. Of course these are ‘patriots’ cheering. Probably ‘chickenhawks’ too. Had Obama not gone to Copenhagen to lobby for them they probably wouldn’t have given a sh!t one way or the other.
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:32 pmThis too, shall back-fire. When the Conservatives euphoira wears off, they will realize they were cheering for us to lose Billions. Hence, that is why they removed the language from the article. Millions of people in Chicago could have benefited from this. But for weeks, MSM was telling us how the Repugs and Cons were dead sent against it. Did the climate in the U.S. sway the decision? Did the anger and animosity here play a role? That is what millions of Americans will be asking themselves.
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:32 pmI say we take a page from Representative Grayson and fight fire with fire. When Republicans held power, all we ever heard is that we liberals “hate America”. We need to do more to smear them the same way they constantly smeared us. Call out their hatred of America. Keep pointing out that they are rooting AGAINST America doing well. Paint them as being so obsessed with Obama that they want our country to fail, even on things like hosting the Olympics, which should not have been partisan in any way.
Why do Republicans hate America? Why do they want America to fail?

You’re worried about the traffic construction headaches that go along with the organizing of any Olympic games, fine. Alot of Chicago natives felt that way.
You’re cheering that an American city lost a bid to host the Olympics and an opportunity to express our national pride and glory on a global stage…you’re a disgrace.
Take your prepackaged pseudo-patriotic hatered and shove it up your ass the next time you utter the phrase “American exceptionalism”
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:36 pmSo these guys really expected if the president of the U.S. makes some lip service, the rest of the world would be so grateful that deliver the Olympic games to the U.S.? What’s wrong with these people?
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:38 pmThe neocons hate Chicago because the city always voted Dem in the national elections. No Republican has carried the city since 1930. The Chicago Dem machine is the last vestige of the Roosevelt era and it still turns out a lot of votes. We have had a Dem mayor since 1930 and no Republican aldermen since the 1970’s. The most interesting aspect about the city is that Nixon really liked the city and Mayor Daley because he was always gracious and gave Republican presidents the formal welcomes. Another interesting aspect is that the Dems here are pretty conservative except when it comes to unions and social issues. The garbage about corruption is exaggerated because the feds have kept a close watch on our politicians.

October 2nd, 2009 at 1:40 pmJust remember, when this inevitable even occurs, the next thing to come out of their mouths is a load of crap screaming that Obama should have done more to ensure we won to help create jobs.
Republicans are against our President, despite his honest attempts at being everyones President. They are against the opposition party, despite countless concessions in the name of bi-partisanship. This leads them to also be against the majority of Americans in this Country who voted for the party that opposes them. The Republic Party is also against the lion’s share of LIVs who vote for them (against their own needs and interests).
SO WHO THE FU(K NEEDS THE REPUBLIC PARTY ASIDE FROM CORPORATE AMERICA AS THEY ARE THE ONLY BLOC THAT GARNERS THEIR DEVOTION?
Abolish the Republic Party. If we need a two party system in order to sustain balance, how about The Deomocratic Party and the Progressive Party? It would be a much more accurate balance of the demographic of America. Conservatives can coil up in the corner pissing their pants and mumbling to themselves until they all die for all I care as they serve noone but themselves.
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:40 pmtom@33, Their hatred is so obvious and palpable it knows no bounds. I HAVE never seen such hatred displayed at our President. Oh sure, the trolls will bring up the hatred for Bush and his cronies, but this beats the band. People claiming he is an alien, the racist language (And is racist in some cases trolls), too people wearing handguns when he makes an appearance. You know, as a good loser, I am applauding the choice to put it in Rio. South America deserves its chance to host an Olympics. This will be good for their country.
After all, who would want to come to an Olympics hosted by a country where some people cheer when their home country loses?
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:42 pmI don’t understand how this is supposed to be an Obama loss in the first place.
Chicago has been on the short-list of possible locations for the 2016 Olympics since June of 2008. They put in their bid years ago. It had nothing to do with Barack Obama whatsoever. To claim that it does is just simply stupid.
People who seem to be knowledgeable about such things said, even back then, that it was most likely that Rio would host them, because no South American city has ever hosted them before. As our President, and being from Chicago, Obama had to go and support Chicago’s bid, but I don’t think anyone expected it to actually happen.
How does this translate to an Obama failure? How does this translate as good news? More importantly – how do these people sleep at night being this bitter and nasty?

I really do wish the right-wing lunatic fringe would do away with all pretense. They are showing their petty, pathetic, small selves over Chicago’s loss of the Olymics bid. It’s a figurative way of cutting off their noses to spite their faces.
I really do wish they would literally cut off their noses to spite their faces. The side-benefit is that they’d also be easy to pick out in a crowd.

Just wondering.
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:50 pmThis is a sham. I noticed how many posts are saying the same thing. How is this Obama’s fault? Chicago was 1 in 5. This was set in motion in 2008. Do Republicans not see a problem with rooting against the United States? In other times it would be condemned as downright un-American. It has been a common practice for Republican to try and wrap the flag around them. Here Republicans oddly are wrapping the flag around Obama. Talk about self-destructive.
The republics are pathetic with nothing but wishful hoping ot offer their trolls. Obama appeared at this presentation as did most of the heads of state and as did Tony Blair when London won their bid. There were several people who gave the presentation. For these hypocritical cowards who called us who disagreed with the Bush Crime Family to act so unpatriotic and so anti-American is a telltale of where their heart really stands. There is no advesary that we face as evil and as anti-American as the republic party of failure.

____________
It’s always Obama’s fault, no matter what the outcome. It’s win-win-win-win for the conservatrolls. Observe:
If Obama goes to Copenhagen and Chicago loses, he’s a failure. If he doesn’t go to Copenhagen and Chicago loses, he’s a traitor for not backing the American city before the IOC. If he goes and Chicago wins, he’s wasting tax dollars. And if he doesn’t go and Chicago wins, he’s impotent and irrelevant.
See how conservalogic works? The facts don’t matter – it’s all the way you spin it.

October 2nd, 2009 at 1:57 pmI think the world took a look at the state of civil rights in the USofA under the regime of the PATRIOT ACT, and its many off-spring, and decided that there would be
too many hassles,
too many cops,
too many troglodytic TSA “inspectors,”
too many ignorant, uncivilized, parochial
dickheads involved who would stupidly interfere with
too many people and athletes
from too many countries
on too many lists,
and it would keep people away.
And so they said Phuque the National Security States of America…
As I, under the same circumstances, would also have done.
I also think Obama made a mistake personally appealing for the Games, risking and now losing political/symbolic capital, given the almost certainty of him failing–in view not only the distinct unpleasantness of the US attitudes towards visitors lately, but also because of the geographic claim Rio exerted, being the only South American bid ever to reach this stage.
Plus, the IOC, being one of the last semi-public strongholds of the Oligarchy, would prefer Rio’s bid because there is a far greater likelihood for successful graft, theft, and embezzlement, while offering the local oligarchs an excuse to “clean out” some undesirables from favelas and colonias, which will be condemned to make land for the Games…
Chicago’s problem was compounded, then, by too much oversight and not enough room for really large-scale corruption.
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:57 pmI was really disappointed when hearing the news about the Olympics. But now, I say congratulations to Rio de Janeiro. October 2nd, 2009 at 2:14 pm@97, What lesson fool? That trolls and Repugs are small, petty and offensive. Yeah, As*hole. We learned that long ago.

Right because that is just the kind of pile of shit you are. Just go kill yourself punk.
October 2nd, 2009 at 2:17 pmPoliticallyStupid
You are nothing but an ignorant punkass troll. May you die face down in the gutter with rats gnawing on your earlobes
October 2nd, 2009 at 2:19 pmThe irony that is lost on our pathetic trolls is that when G. Dumbya Shithead failed (and failed, and failed etc) we didn’t laugh. We saw nothing funny in the way he led the Country. Embarassed yes. Disgusted yes. But happy about the things he did to our Nation NEVER. We did not relish in his failure but coalesced in numbers to ensure that the Republic Party would not hold the reins for a long time. It must really suck to be a Republican seeing that the only amusement they feel comes at the expense of the good of America. Pathetic.
October 2nd, 2009 at 2:23 pmTo Chicago’s credit, they had put togather a coalition that made the Olympics a regional event. I*t is not just Chicago’s loss that they are cheering, but many other areas in the Midwest that tend to be “red state”.
In short, the right is cutting itself off at the knees.
October 2nd, 2009 at 2:33 pmright wingers didn’t want the Olympics because of the employment it would create
right wingers are pinning all of their election hopes on high unemployment numbers
they NEED America to fail in order to con people into voting for them
October 2nd, 2009 at 2:35 pmOur country is viewed as the #1 terrorist nation, we are the laughing stock as so many protest against our best interest – a public health option and let’s not forget to mention how piggish we appear with the tea parties…. so maybe it is reasonable we were not chosen.
I also posted that on foxnation as they are cheering and crowing… will see if it gets posted.
October 2nd, 2009 at 2:38 pmI disagree, they would have blamed him for not going once Chicago lost the bid. The wingnuts cannot hide their joy because they want to see Obama fail, and anything that resembles failure, they’ll cheer.
October 2nd, 2009 at 2:39 pmPeople in those filthy third-world countries cheered when 9/11 happened under Bush. Because of our policies, we now resemble a third world country and we’re cheering in the streets. Ahh .. how the times have changed. LOL!
October 2nd, 2009 at 2:42 pmWant to bet the guy blackmailling Leterman is a Palin supporter?
October 2nd, 2009 at 2:43 pmIndeed I learned a lesson today, PoS, that republicans seek to take back power by hoping America fails. Good luck with that, and blow it out your ass.
October 2nd, 2009 at 2:45 pmThe floor’s a mess right now at the RNC. You know how my little critters like raw meat? Well, they just had a celebratory food fight, blood everywhere, even on their hands (whodathunk?)
October 2nd, 2009 at 2:48 pmJust heard the news that Rio won.
Well, the right-wingnuts can all enjoy their circle jerk now that our country didn’t win – they were rooting for any country, just so long as it wasn’t America. See they really love their country – they just hate Obama more – so anything that would have made Obama look good was objectionable to them.
So we have them cheering that the USA lost.
We have one Senator (DeMint) going to South America to undermine our diplomats by supporting a leftist regime.
Another (Inhofe) is going to Copenhagen to protest our policy on climate change.
Rep. Cantor went to Israel and spoke out against American policy of objecting to settlements.
Re. Kirk went to China and said our government lies.
Is this the latest repugniscum gambit — undermine Obama around the world as well as domestically? Apparently they can’t stand that Obama might be repairing what was lost during the Bush cowboy years/
October 2nd, 2009 at 2:49 pmShayne@111
My thoughts exactly.
October 2nd, 2009 at 2:49 pmThese same repug low-lifes would be criticizing Obama had we lost and he had not gone there in person.
October 2nd, 2009 at 2:53 pmThey will turn any occasion into a bash-Obama event.

Seriously though, for once I agree with obomber. The olympics deserve to be in America over that smelly latin america shithole that is called Rio.
It’s just……….. hilarious to watch obama fail.
Of course we’d be racist for pointing out the bigotry and racism in your quote…that’s how it works in Wingnuttia…

October 2nd, 2009 at 3:05 pmSo wingnuts, can we call you traitors even though that is un-American, considering you guys did the same for the Iraq war?
October 2nd, 2009 at 3:05 pm. . . “at the expense of undermining our relationships with our allies, . . .”
What is he talking about? Does the US have allies who would be offended because the President of the US tried to have the Olympics in a US city? I really try to give right-wing types the benefit of the doubt, but I don’t see anything of substance to back up that statement.
What am I missing?

This makes me wonder why the Dems haven’t come out swinging about these matters.
October 2nd, 2009 at 3:08 pmRighties are really whittling the map down for themselves,
first the west coast,
then new england,
now chicago,
are all “enemy territories” to them…
give’em a few more years, and they’ll be limited to holding on to Alabama by a thread, and trying lob all their weak attacks from a bunker outside Huntsville.

So what? So cheering when the USA fails at something is, at the least, extremely unpatriotic and at worst, treason. You should be concerned that you don’t end up spending the rest of your life behind bars for your treason. That’s so what.
Keep cheering when the USA fails so we can identify you quickly and easily so you can be part of the wingnut roundup. This kind of treason needs to be stomped on hard.
I foresee we will be letting pot smokers out of prisons to make room for Republicans that cheer when America fails.
October 2nd, 2009 at 3:11 pmCelebrating when America is not #1. Boy that is going to cost the Republicans dearly. This is going to haunt them for years to come.
October 2nd, 2009 at 3:15 pm300,000 jobs and $20 Billion down the tubes and the Republicans celebrate, because they hate Obama so much. Let us be sure to remember and remind our family and friends about it everytime we can, that Republicans are against our country. Lets make sure they know how we feel about their behavior.
October 2nd, 2009 at 3:30 pmpags2 at #123
Just imagine what would happen to Democrats who did these things in a repugniscum administration.
I am convinced that the repugs are so determined to cause Obama to falter, that they will undermine him at every turn and risk harming the entire nation just so they can say “we told you so.”
October 2nd, 2009 at 3:30 pm“But the post has now been changed.”
Their strain of chicken-hawkish-ness runs down to the marrow.
Yellow now, yellow forever !
October 2nd, 2009 at 3:37 pmWho are these people? How unpatriotic can you get? These repubs are the most ungrateful, selfish bastards I’ve ever seen.
October 2nd, 2009 at 3:44 pmYou’re rooting against your own country you asshats!
Bye bye, 2010, 2012, 2014, and 2016 elections. The Republican party is finished.
October 2nd, 2009 at 3:46 pmElbruce, if you are correct – and I surely hope you are – I will say I heard it here first!!
October 2nd, 2009 at 4:10 pmSave America – Mock a Republican everyday.
People -we need to embarress the 20% er’s so they STFU.
October 2nd, 2009 at 4:26 pmThe IOC is totally racist.
October 2nd, 2009 at 4:43 pmGood one! I didn’t see that coming….
October 2nd, 2009 at 4:47 pmIt’s increasingly clear that the same people (and I use that term loosely) cheering America losing the Olympics would cheer any bad thing that happens to this country up to and including an Al Qaida attack on American soil. Just so long as they can point fingers at Obama.
Conservatives: Partisan politics first, country last.
October 2nd, 2009 at 5:01 pmI’ve been reading “Politically Superior’s” comments for awhile now, and I can’t really recall anything that he has written that has any substance anywhere.. he’s not even that imaginative… just little pin pricks here and there. Not one of the brighter trolls, I must say.
October 2nd, 2009 at 5:07 pmOnce again, The Weekly Standard’s writers and editors demonstrate that their allegiance is not to this country. Not only are they sore losers, bad sports, and a pack of witless arsewipes, but they prefer schoolyard treason to the spirit of Team America.
October 2nd, 2009 at 5:09 pmI have a theory that Obama went to Copenhagen after Valerie, Rezko, and the other Chicago gangsters bought up all of the land around the Olympic site and realized that Rio had the inside track, and they weren’t going to be able to siphon all of those taxpayer dollars into their pockets.
I actually feel bad that Obama has to be the dancing bear for Ayers, Axelrod, Jerrett, and the rest of the criminals. I think he is fairly genuine dude that is way over his head and his naivete is being exposed.

Since you’re totally racist! Sounds like projection to me! ;)
October 2nd, 2009 at 5:24 pm“Party Before Country” should be the new GOP motto. Their reaction to this news is just sick and it’s no wonder our country is in such bad shape today after 8+ years of Republican control of Washington. Do any of these people have a conscience?? Truly sad.
October 2nd, 2009 at 6:01 pmLet’s do a Rove and just blame the right wingnuts for loosing the Chicago bid!!!
They certainly did not support it. How Un-American!!!

that may be, conman, but on the other hand, it strikes me that it’s really kind of American to give it a try. The fact that the conservatives and reactionaries would prefer to mope around and say we can’t tells us something about their claims to be representative of the better America.

Perfect point, VP.
It seems to me that the “small government” attitude has morphed into a full blown “government officials shouldn’t do their jobs” attitude. Actually, this was exemplified by Bush and most of his appointees during his administration. I just didn’t think they’d come out and actually advocate shirking like they are now.
October 3rd, 2009 at 1:05 amMaybe people would prefer that America not use a city full of corruption and violence as our “Showplace” just so Obama can pay back his crooked, radical friends. Where do you think all that money was gonna end up, anyway? In some balloon vendor’s bank account? Naive at best.

The Chicago bid was submitted while Bush was in office, before Obama even won the election.
Also, hating different parts of the country is going to leave you with no parts left. You’re not convincing me that they’re corrupt, only that you’re willing to smear anybody anywhere.
