Weekly Standard deletes reference to ‘Cheers’ in their office after Chicago lost Olympic bid.
Soon after news broke that the International Olympic Committee had rejected Chicago’s bid to host the 2016 Olympics, which President Obama had personally lobbied for, Weekly Standard blogger John McCormack published a celebratory post on the magazine’s blog, titled “Chicago Loses! Chicago Loses!.” McCormack wrote that “Cheers erupt at WEEKLY STANDARD world headquarters”:
But the post has now been changed. The reference to cheers have been removed and the title has been shortened to a non-exclamatory “Chicago Loses.” The current post neither acknowledges nor explains the changes that were made.
Update The Weekly Standard promoted McCormack's celebration on Twitter, saying "Chicago Loses! Chicago Loses!"

Not only would it have immediately put people to work, it would have boosted the economy and tourism to and in this country between now and 2016. The Chicago Dem machine is the last vestige of the Roosevelt era and it still turns out a lot of votes. We have had a Dem mayor since 1930 and no Republican aldermen since the 1970’s. The most interesting aspect about the city is that Nixon really liked the city and Mayor Daley because he was always gracious and gave Republican presidents the formal welcomes. Another interesting aspect is that the Dems here are pretty conservative except when it comes to unions and social issues. You know, as a good loser, I am applauding the choice to put it in Rio. South America deserves its chance to host an Olympics. This will be good for their country.
After all, who would want to come to an Olympics hosted by a country where some people cheer when their home country loses?

Chicago has been on the short-list of possible locations for the 2016 Olympics since June of 2008. They put in their bid years ago. It had nothing to do with Barack Obama whatsoever. To claim that it does is just simply stupid.
People who seem to be knowledgeable about such things said, even back then, that it was most likely that Rio would host them, because no South American city has ever hosted them before. As our President, and being from Chicago, Obama had to go and support Chicago’s bid, but I don’t think anyone expected it to actually happen.

Michael Steele is probably cheering wildly given his criticism of the Obama’s making a pitch in Copenhagen for Chicago. Axelrod seemed to know what the IOC was thinking when he chided Steele about pulling for Rio to host the Olympics because that is just what happened.

I also think Obama made a mistake personally appealing for the Games, risking and now losing political/symbolic capital, given the almost certainty of him failing–in view not only the distinct unpleasantness of the US attitudes towards visitors lately, but also because of the geographic claim Rio exerted, being the only South American bid ever to reach this stage.
Plus, the IOC, being one of the last semi-public strongholds of the Oligarchy, would prefer Rio’s bid because there is a far greater likelihood for successful graft, theft, and embezzlement, while offering the local oligarchs an excuse to “clean out” some undesirables from favelas and colonias, which will be condemned to make land for the Games…
Chicago’s problem was compounded, then, by too much oversight and not enough room for really large-scale corruption.

I’m saying that this was a bid drawn together regardless of who was president. It’s a disappointment that they couldn’t get the complete bid, but there were better cities in the selection committee’s mind.
