Kristol Compares Obama’s Olympics Pitch To ‘George W. Bush-Like’ Bullying

Conservatives have been bashing President Obama for the past week over his decision to personally go to Copenhagen to boost America’s pitch for the 2016 Olympics. When the International Olympics Committee eliminated Chicago in the first round, those same conservatives were euphoric. Today on Fox News Sunday, Bill Kristol, editor of the Weekly Standard — whose headquarters erupted in “cheers” when America lost — said that Obama’s decision to go to Copenhagen was an example of George W. Bush-like bullying:

KRISTOL: Our economy doesn’t need the boost of the Olympics. And then an American president in sort of a George W. Bush-like way goes and tries to bully the International Olympic Committee. [...]

Come walk with us. I’m here for America. Can you imagine if some Republican — if Bush had done this and we hadn’t gotten it? Typical Bush heavy-handedness, cowboy unilateralist, hegemonic imperialist action. Obama falls into that trap and they went for it. I must say you couldn’t help be amused by it.

Watch it:

First of all, Kristol was a big fan of the Bush administration’s policies, so it’s not clear why he wouldn’t like Obama going to Copenhagen. But more importantly, Obama’s trip was not a “hegemonic imperialist action.” Brazil, Spain, and Japan — the other three 2016 finalists — all sent their country’s leaders to Copenhagen, as MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow pointed out on NBC’s Meet the Press today. Conservative New York Times columnist David Brooks said that he was proud Obama had “put his country ahead of his own personal prestige”:

MADDOW: In 2012, London got the Olympics after Blair tried for them. In 2014, Russia got them after Putin tried for them, and in 2016, all four finalists sent their head of government or head of state to make the argument. Obama did nothing unreasonable, and it would have been a shock if Chicago won. For them to be cheering America’s loss here on the right, I think is sort of disgusting. [...]

BROOKS: Nonetheless, I have to say, I’m with Obama on this. He took a risk, he comes away somewhat humiliated, but he took a risk for his town, he took a risk for his country, he put his country ahead of his own personal prestige, and he lost one. I actually don’t mind it. I think he was all right on this.

E.J. Dionne added that Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) presidential slogan was “Country First,” but “in this case, it was Obama-hatred first on the right, not the country.” Watch it:

    Really?

Maybe only rich guys like Kristol don’t need a boosted economy but the millions out of work might have a different take.

I always wish I could wipe the smirk off that smarmy little Billy Kristol’s face whenever he opens his pie-hole. I guess he prefers to see a sitting president like GDumbya go to Beijing, *ss-grab a couple volleyball players, stumble drunk down the stadium stairs and be seen on TV internationally with his alcoholic red nose lit up for everyone to see.

Yup. That’s preferable to seeing a President Obama do everything in his power to sell the Olympic Committee on awarding the 2012 event to Chicago.

  6. Virtual Pebble says:

Little Billy Kristol; still in need of a brain transplant. Don’t we have a troll out here somewhere who will sacrifice some other troll’s brain for Billy. Please call our hot line at 1-800-EAT-SHIT and pledge now.

Oh, sorry. Bill’s still just distraught and floundering because his dad died. He has no one to turn to now for instruction on tying his shoes and saying the neo-con thing in front of the trolls. I’d give my condolences to Bill, but I really should have sent condolences to Irving years ago because of his burden, young Billy.

Perhaps the IOC remembered all the scandals when the Mormon-run Salt Lake City Olympics devolved in scandal in 2002? And wasn’t Romney heavily involved in that Olympics? Based on that debacle, perhaps the IOC didn’t want to return to the US anytime soon. That the right would boo Obama’s efforts to overcome their Olympian ineptitude seven years ago is ridiculous.

  13. Jim Wolf359 says:

    Pennsylvaniannie says,

The Mittster was the head of the Salt Lake organizing committee. And there were alot of problems that developed during the buildup to the Games in 2002. The other issue that the IOC members have with the US is our onerous Visa policy. It mitigates against forigners visiting the US. Fingerprinting, Photographing and requeiring visitors to register on the HSA database really isn’t a nice way ti treat visitors.

That’s an amazing statement right there. The fundamentals of our economy are strong, maybe? Even McCain had to walk that one back. I can’t believe Kristol’s still saying such a thing.

    .

KRISTOL: Can you imagine if some Republican — if Bush had done this and we hadn’t gotten it? Typical Bush heavy-handedness, cowboy unilateralist, hegemonic imperialist action.

Not unless he publically and literally threatened the IOC with military force… which I wouldn’t put past him. If this had been Bush stumping for Dallas (for example), we wouldn’t be cheering if the IOC picked somewhere else. It’s not “bullying” for a world leader to give a presentation to the IOC. Lots of them do it all the time.

    .

BROOKS: Nonetheless, I have to say, I’m with Obama on this. He took a risk, he comes away somewhat humiliated

No, he didn’t. There’s nothing unusual about a world leader giving a presentation to the IOC and a different country getting the games. It’s not “humiliating” at all.

Agreed. No matter what Obama does, these people are going to oppose him. It is time for the MSM to call these people out for what they are–racist and unpatriotic. The MSM needs to keep pounding out the message. I hope that the American people rebuke the Republicans in 2010 for embracing these radicals.

  37. Bluestocking says:

Bush-like way goes and tries to bully the International Olympic Committee…Can you imagine if some Republican — if Bush had done this and we hadn’t gotten it? Typical Bush heavy-handedness, cowboy unilateralist, hegemonic imperialist action.

    ************************************************************

I swear…if William Kristol were Pinocchio, his nose would probably be touching the surface of the moon by now! And what I want to know is…why does hardly anyone in the media have the courage to confront him face-to-face with his own lies?

For starters, if my understanding is correct, wasn’t the “Chicago 2016″ bid originally initiated in June 2008 by then-President George W. Bush? If so, by conveniently neglecting to mention this pertinent fact, Kristol is lying by omission merely so that he can have another excuse for vilifying Obama.

Secondly, I find it hard to believe that Kristol does not know what the word “imperialistic” means…so his use of it here is not only inappropriate but disingenuous, since he probably chose to use it solely because it’s so emotionally loaded. In what way could any rational person even remotely consider Obama’s trip to Copenhagen “imperialistic?” It’s not as if he’d tried to override or seize control of the Olympic Committee, or had somehow coerced them into awarding all future Olympic games to the United States — something like that would classify as “imperialistic” and “heavy-handed”, but neither Bush nor Obama was trying to do that. That’s nothing but a classic case of Freudian projection and an attempt to deflect attention on Kristol’s part, because much of the foreign policy under the Bush administration had an imperialistic tone — one which came back to bite them in the backside.

“Our economy doesn’t need the stimulus of the Olympics?” We all know that he probably doesn’t…but when the official statistics on unemployment are at a 26-year high and there are an estimated six unemployed for every one current job opening, I think it’s safe to say that the jobs which would inevitably have been created had the decision gone in our favor would definitely have been an asset. And while we’re at it, let’s remember that the “official” unemployment statistics only reflect those people who are currently collecting benefits from the government. They don’t include the underemployed or the unemployed who are ineligible for benefits (either because they’ve exceeded the time limit or did not qualify to receive benefits).

What is almost as distressing to me is Frank Rich’s cheap shot equating the president to a lobbyist for making a case for the Olympic games. And, he used the media’s and right wing’s phrase, “stunning failure.” The “progressive” left does not begin to approach the destructive behavior of the right, but it does take its own depressingly knee-jerk approach to criticism. I don’t want a bunch of cheerleaders on the Democratic side, but I would appreciate a little less of the “oh, they’re all the same” attitude or, even worse, the regurgitation of talking points that start with Drudge.

They sneered that Chicago’s crime rate was a deterrent — hah! they don’t know the crime rate in Rio do they? — Marie

    *******************************************************

No kidding. As I wrote earlier this week on another thread related to the same topic, most major cities of roughly comparable size to Chicago have at least comparable — if not worse — crime rates. Anyone who claims otherwise is a) unbelievably ignorant, b) in denial, or c) lying through his or her teeth. I’ve never been to Rio, but I’ve heard at least one story to the effect that there are parts of the city where a tourist should not even consider going unless he or she quite literally has a death wish.

Then again, there are places here in New York City where I live of which others have said more or less the same thing. Back in the late 1980’s, I lived only three or four blocks away from a neighborhood in Manhattan called Alphabet City (so called because the avenues are named for the first four letters of the alphabet). Time was when they used to say (perhaps still do) that if you went as far as Avenue A, you were Adventurous — and as far as B, you were Bold. Going as far as Avenue C meant that you were Crazy…and supposedly, if you went as far as D, there was a good chance of ending up Dead.

Total volume on U.S. railroads for the week ending September 26 was estimated at 28.8 billion ton-miles, off 17.2 percent from the same week last year.

Obama was told a trip to Olympics meeting may clinch Chicago win
Up until a few days before flying to Copenhagen, Obama was not sold on the idea. He was concerned he would be gone when the healthcare debate hit the House or Senate floor.

    By Peter Nicholas
    October 4, 2009

Reporting from Washington – In the run-up to the Olympics vote, the White House was getting a clear message from the architects of Chicago’s bid: Balloting would be tight, and a personal visit to Copenhagen from President Obama just might lock in a victory.

Leaders of the Windy City’s campaign to secure the 2016 Summer Games had done some nose-counting and were convinced that the International Olympic Committee might well anoint Chicago as host, according to White House officials interviewed Saturday.
    [...]

Jarrett flew back home with Obama on Air Force One. She said he was unfazed by the loss.

“We have plenty on our plate to do,” she said. “He called the president of Brazil from Air Force One to offer congratulations, and by the time we landed in Washington, he was talking about healthcare.

A “new” stupid troll calling itself redstateyes seems just as old as any long-banned sockpuppet. So I’ll address it as same.

The thing is, stupid troll, “the left” didn’t make it an issue. It was the Reichwing screeching heads that went totally batscat claiming the world was going to end, at least more quickly, because President Obama took an 18 hour detour to engage in a little informal diplomacy. Diplomacy happens to be another word that Reichwhiners can’t seem to grasp the meaning of but, I digress.

The fact is that it was off the radar until Lush and the creeps started squealing like stuck pigs. Then he didn’t fall drunk off the stage or call an ally a terrorist or grope anyone or make a fool of himself. Then the screechers got nervous when, like manna from heaven, they were presented with the news that Chicago was rejected. Hallelujah Jebus! Now they had a “failure” to cheer.

Within a matter of hours certain elements of the “press” took it from under the radar to “the worst day of his Administration. tee-he tee-he!” And all the while, sane people haven’t really given a rat’s rump about Chicago’s bid for the Olympics.

What sane people have been reacting to is the rabid glee with which the Reichwhiners celebrated a blow to the prestige, if nothing else, of our country just so they can fling some mud at the President. And we can’t help but wonder if they wouldn’t take to the streets in celebration if the good ol U.S.A. is attacked or we suffer a military disaster abroad. I’ve seen nothing in their behavior to indicate that they wouldn’t cheer a real disaster that makes President Obama look bad.

    Union League Club of Chicago
    Chicago, Illinois

THE PRESIDENT: I want to thank the members of the 2016 Chicago bid to get the Olympics. Listen, Mr. Mayor, you and your committee have put together a great plan. It’s a plan that will make America proud.

They say that the Olympics will come to Chicago if we’re fortunate enough to be selected, but really it’s coming to America, and I can’t think of a better city to represent the United States than Chicago.

President George W. Bush and Chicago Mayor Richard Daley hold up a T-shirt touting Chicago 2016, during a meeting Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, with with members of the Chicago 2016 Bid Committee and the U.S. Olympic Committee. Said the President, “This country supports your bid, strongly. And our hope is that the judges will take a good look at Chicago and select Chicago for the 2016 Olympics.” White House photo by Joyce N. Boghosian This is a well thought out venue. There will be — the athletes will be taken care of. People who will be coming from around the world will find this good city has got fantastic accommodations, great restaurants. It will be safe.

And so I — this country supports your bid, strongly. And our hope is that the judges will take a good look at Chicago and select Chicago for the 2016 Olympics.

    Thank you all.

    flatssf says:

The common misconception is similar to the one that major sports franchises help a city financially when the studies show just the opposite, they actually cost taxpayers more.

The Olympics is not a “sports franchise.” You’re comparing apples to iguanas.

For-profit privately owned sports teams often get the better end of the deal when they locate in a city, because they frequently don’t pay for a fair share of the new construction involved.

Olympic events fully reimburse the cities they’re held in for any construction, meaning that the city ends up paying nothing, and reaping all of the benefits of the increased economic activity.

If you have to call it something it isn’t in order to say negative things about it, then you’re clearly trying to misrepresent the facts of the matter, a process also known as “lying.”

I have never in my life heard anybody claim that the Olympics were a bad thing for their host country before a couple of days ago. Never. Neither have you. You’d think if it were actually true, you’d be able to find such arguments being made before Obama’s trip. That’s kind of how truth tends to work. But I guess you wouldn’t know about that.

  141. pags2 says:

The reason why Obama went to Copenhagen is because Mayor Daley called him and asked for his help. Daley and Obama do not have any personal relationship. dbadass says:
“What is the point of sports?”

    Ritualized warfare.

    From “About.com”…
“It’s a curious aspect of sports that even when they are part of a celebration of global peace, like the Olympics, they are nationalistic, competitive, violent, and potentially deadly. Substitute “panhellenic” (open to all Greeks) for “global” and the same could be said about the ancient Olympics. Sports, in general, could be described as ritualized warfare where one power competes with another, where each hero (star athlete) strives to defeat a worthy opponent within a setting where death is unlikely.”

    and this little morsel…
“It was sacrilege to commit a crime, like accepting payment, corruption, and invasion during the Olympic games.”

“The Greeks dated events from the first Olympiad in in 776 B.C. — two decades before the legendary founding of Rome.”

Little has changed in nearly 4000 years, eh?

I can guess that sports originated much, much earlier in human history, though for the same reasons.

Modern sports, with the exception of the Olympics perhaps, continues to foster the same purpose.

    Bread and circus, anyone?
