Fox News host Glenn Beck didn’t get much love from yesterday’s Sunday show guests. First, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said that Beck “doesn’t represent the Republican Party.” “You can listen to him if you like,” he added. “I choose not to.” Later, a bipartisan group of pundits also dismissed Beck. On NBC’s Meet the Press, GOP strategist Mike Murphy said:
MURPHY: These radio guys can’t deliver a pizza, let alone a nomination. And you can case study that out in the last election.
On CNN, when conservative pundit Mary Matalin attempted to defend Beck by saying that he is tapping into a neglected constituency of “maligned mothers,” her husband, liberal strategist James Carville, jumped in and called Beck “nuts”:
CARVILLE: Yes. I think he’s nuts, OK? Just out and out nuts. And I also think that he’s a blatant hypocrite.
Here’s somebody that sits on his show and weeping about how much he loves America and “The 5,000 Year Leap,” and then he’s absolutely giddy when his country doesn’t get the Olympics. And this is — I’ll tell you another thing about Glenn Beck. He wouldn’t know the difference between a football, a bat and a hockey court.
Watch it:
Transcript:
MURPHY: These radio guys can’t deliver a pizza, let alone a nomination. And you can case study that out in the last election. [...]
MATALIN: Well, full disclosure, Glenn is a Threshold author, Simon & Schuster imprint, of which I’m associated with. Glenn has two best-sellers. This has never happened before. Two No. 1 best-sellers in hard cover and paperback, non-fiction. All right. Somebody out there is listening, what Glenn Beck says. I know he doesn’t listen and Lindsey doesn’t listen.
Glenn Beck is unequivocal in saying he’s not a Republican; he’s not a Democrat. He possibly has libertarian leanings in a vacuum. So what he has tapped into is really, really what I think is going to be the dispositive future for us. Maligned mothers.
He did not — it wasn’t just ACORN. He did the czars. He was instrumental in these tea parties and this rising opposition, again, of people who aren’t typically listened to. He doesn’t affiliate with either party, or any party, but he has tapped into this mainstream of America who feels otherwise not listened to.
This guy is not — he’s just all — he’s just all weeping.
Yes, he’ll sell a lot of books, but he exposed himself, just like a lot of these other people did there. And so yes, he gets a lot of viewers, but go look at his reading habits. Try “The 5,000 Year Leap” and I’m not just going to — that guy just exposed himself for what he was.
Wow. GOP elites trying to out elite each other. The irony is quite epic in scale.
October 5th, 2009 at 9:58 amUmmm…what’s a hockey court?
October 5th, 2009 at 9:59 am— that guy just exposed himself for what he was
October 5th, 2009 at 10:00 amA rabid attention whore who would say anything to get people to pay attention to him.
The only problem with this is that the people who watch faux snooze do not view those channels. So they think that every thing is just hunky dory!
October 5th, 2009 at 10:00 amCarville questioning someone’s sanity doesn’t exactly inspire confidence.
Beck is still in a class all his own when it comes to thoroughly unhinged, vitriolic rants based on half-truths, complete lies, and utter paranoia.
And, am I the only one who gets pissed when people compare him to Howard Beale? Howard Beale was ranting against corporate control of the government, not because the government was weakening corporate control.
October 5th, 2009 at 10:01 amAll this disagreement with Becky needs to be shown on fake noose. But fat chance.
October 5th, 2009 at 10:02 amI’m just so glad that I don’t HAVE TO listen to Glenn Beck of Rush Limbaugh!
October 5th, 2009 at 10:03 amahhh… the repugs are trying to stuff their hate genies back into the proverbial bottle… after staying silent over the summer while their shills stoked hatred and lies, they said (at the least) nothing and (at most) tacitly and (by some) openly supporting them…
NOW they’re trying to distance themselves as they’re discovering these hate-mongers are hurting their party’s “credibility” (yes, i know, the words “republican” and “credibility” don’t really fit together)…
too late…
October 5th, 2009 at 10:06 amToo bad Graham is the exception. Most GOPers love Beck and his crowd…

October 5th, 2009 at 10:09 amI despise Beck as much as the next guy, but why are we listening to Carville about anything? Who is he supposed to be speaking for?
October 5th, 2009 at 10:12 amBeck can deliver pizza. He just can’t get it there in thirty minutes or less. So we had to let him go.
October 5th, 2009 at 10:12 amBeckerhead is a classic example of low self esteem, failures over the course of one’s life and growing insanity.
When Lindsay Graham condemns you, where do you for moral support? He caging himself in a place where neither Party will support his bizarre behavior and beliefs.
How can one speak truth when they’re not honest to begin with?
October 5th, 2009 at 10:13 amThe radio guys beckerhead and rushbuttboil >>>> the dumb and dumber of hate radio.
cowards one and all.
October 5th, 2009 at 10:17 amBeck may be turning out to be an interesting test case; advertisers have abandoned him, now the G-No-P is abandoning him… can a hate jock’s career be sustained on the support of a small cadre of lunatic devotees alone?
I’m thinking not. But perhaps once we factor in Uncle Rupert’s need to “catapult the propaganda” and its attendant largesse, that could upend the equation.

October 5th, 2009 at 10:21 amDon’t be lulled into complacency by this sudden “turning” on Beck. It appears that they are turning specifically on Beck, but not their media stars generally. They don’t seem to be turning on Limbaugh, O’Reilly, Dobbs, Hannity, Malkin or Coulter. Just Beck. I’d be willing to bet the Rush is orchestrating this behind the scenes to make sure that he doesn’t have any serious challenge as imperator rex of the republicans.
October 5th, 2009 at 10:21 amSo i wonder seeing that beckerhead is losing all theses advertiser`s and all that money if Rupert is not going to use beckerhead as a tax loss.
October 5th, 2009 at 10:23 amGlenn Beck really is mentally ill. His mother and brother both committed suicide; he himself has been close to suicide more than once in his roller coaster of a career and life.
I have an ounce of sympathy for him, but that’s about all, considering the damage, the hate, the lies, the outrages he is responsible for–all in the name of fulfilling millions of dollars’ worth of contracts for FOX News and CNN and book publishers.
May he rot.
October 5th, 2009 at 10:23 amContrast this to if the subject was that Dominican Republic child prostitute loving Rush Limbaugh. If it was Rush, Lindsey would be delivering his mea culpa’s right now in all the MSM outlets. But since it’s Beck, they can all act like they are sensible by taking a wack at him. Sadly, these very same conservatives actually believe what Beck champions.
Maybe it’s the crying thing. Maybe it gets in the way of their manly male ego facade thing. Clue to Lindsey…..dude, you’re a closet queen. Come out of the closet and admit yourself to others. We all know what you’d rather be doing with Beck.

October 5th, 2009 at 10:32 amI have no doubt that Beck has a loyal and rabid audience — as do so many of the wingnut talking heads. There will always be a group of people in our society who don’t want to have to think, don’t want to have to overcome their bigotries and prejudices, and appreciate the comfort of somebody telling them that they’re better than somebody else, and that their hatred is not only OK, it’s patriotic.
It’s this group that keeps Beck on the air. Come to think of it, it’s this group that keeps Fox News on the air.

October 5th, 2009 at 10:35 amare only found on the LEFT side…
It’s a little too late for these Repugs to call out Beck and Limpballs now aint it? They kow-towed to these morons when they thought it was beneficial, NOW they realize these guys attract only the fringe. Any leader of the Repugs know that these guys are hurting their party. Unfortunity for them, the realization came far too late.
October 5th, 2009 at 10:36 amWait a minute… wait a minute… Matalin says Beck has two non fiction best sellers.
O.k., who’s lying here? The groups that buy the books in lots, Matalin (of course) or the publisher that lists his books as non-fiction?

October 5th, 2009 at 10:51 amFor the life of me, I can’t even begin to imagine what has kept Carville and Matalin together all these years — and it occurs to me that perhaps I’m better off not knowing! I know there are people who’ve been able to make a marriage work despite significant political differences…but I very much doubt that I could manage it myself. Why would I want to? Why would I want to spend much time at all, never mind the foreseeable future, with someone who thinks my political beliefs and therefore my code of ethics (since the two, at least in my own case, are so closely intertwined) are stupid? Thanks all the same, but…no. I realize that every marriage is based on different kinds of trade-offs, but still…
October 5th, 2009 at 10:52 amzman1, I tend to agree with some of your opinions on the TV machine, but I don’t tend to agree with the “X = Y = Z” view of CNN and MSNBC being identical to Fox. Perhaps they all have their own slant and lean on politics, but I tend to believe that Fox is a little less able to be impartial to the news, especially when compared to CNN.
October 5th, 2009 at 10:53 amDaddy-O, it’s pretty clear that Beck is as close as we’ve got to a real-life Howard Beale these days.
I’m actually a little surprised this comparison hasn’t been made more often.

Am I mistaken, or did Carville say “football bat” instead of “a football, a bat…”? I think Carville is pointing out in a snarky way that Beck doesn’t know ANYTHING.

And that’s what I have constructed around my opinions that I have obtained through the years, zman1. I’m not saying you’re right or wrong; I’m just saying I don’t agree.
October 5th, 2009 at 11:01 amOoo, good point, Purple State. Carville may be clever enough to deliver that kind of snark.
October 5th, 2009 at 11:01 amWith Beck, it’s all about the sensationalism. When a mentally ill person walks by you on the street, raving to himself, part of you wants to crane your neck and catch a little of what he’s saying. Well, there Beck is, for a whole hour, the crazy person giving you a all the ravings that you want, all while in the comfort of your Barcalounger. Someone said @ 15 that he’s a “brilliant demagogue”; he is good at it, and he is canny: recall that link where he is shown using Vick’s Vapo-rub to gin up some tears.
The reason he’s not as good a demagogue as Limbaugh is that the general perception of Beck is that he’s unstable, while ol’ Rushbo keeps chugging along, steadily spewing his nonsense, with even his detractors fully aware that he knows full well what he’s doing. What has to be a big part of Beck’s attraction now is that folks want to catch his final meltdown, ’cause part of the crazy is genuine with him.
And by the way, who are these “maligned mothers”, anyway?
October 5th, 2009 at 11:03 amThis push back by some Republicans is proof of the big trouble they are in. Their saint, Ronald Reagan said, “thou shalt not speak ill of another Republican”, and no one is buying that Beck is not a Republican. They cheered when the US lost the Olympics, that is the kind of thing that an average voter will remember. I can imagine an ad of the Republicans cheering with the tagline: “They cheered when America lost the Olympics… shouldn’t we all be asking them why?”
It is really too little, too late for the Republicans to pull back from the radicals who have captured their party.
October 5th, 2009 at 11:04 amThis comment has been voted down. Click to read.
Carville has a point (not on top of his head) as does Matalin.
The people listening to Beck and the other jocks are missing something, so Matalin’s call is good; they’re tapping something. Whether it’s just a need for crazed red-meat entertainment or they think it’s truthiness exemplified or some other thing would take a respectable survey to sort out, but something draws those people in and draws them back.
OTOH, the jocks aren’t capable of getting out the vote, so Carville has a cogent point. They can rile people momentarily, but then what happens? The jocks mostly get people to get off their butts during advertisements to go get another brewsky or a snack. Come election day, the jocks have pounded that same crap so often that the audience is burned out; they’re just peevish and out of sorts, and not about to go out and vote – that takes an effort and you have to have gone out and registered, etc etc.
October 5th, 2009 at 11:22 amRegarding Carville & Matalin’s curious relationship / marriage…
Where else but with each other could 2 people that butt ugly FIND a relationship?
October 5th, 2009 at 11:27 amby getting together, they saved 2 other people a lot of grief
October 5th, 2009 at 11:30 amThe people who watch Beck are unlikely to be repulsed by how Beck, Limbaugh, et al, are poisoning the political atmosphere. The Republicans have failed to distance themselves from the radical right. There is a good possibility that voters may recoil and dump even more Republicans in swing districts. It may be too late for the GOP to move toward the center. If Limbaugh’s theory that the Republicans are not hard core enough is wrong and they lose or fail to gain more seats, Beck and the others become easy targets. The problem is the moderates cannot purge the party of the radicals or vice versa without losing votes. It is a very difficult dilemma.

Purple State:
If Fox speaks most often in opposition to your opinions then I would expect you to believe that.
It has NOTHING to do with that. It has to do with facts, and most importantly: the ignorance of facts, which leads to SPIN.
Take the whole “czar” thing. FOX went after Obama (and I might note, Obama ALONE) tenaciously for that – all the while willfully ignoring SEVERAL facts: 1) Presidents have had “czars” for a very long time; 2) Obama isn’t even the president who’s had the *most* “czars”; and 3) no one really agrees as to who these “czars” are.
So SPIN shows Obama’s power mad with his “czars” but FACT shows Obama’s actually either regular or even less involved with “czars” than his predecessors. And FOX is clearly SPIN over FACT.

I have been visiting several sites the last 2 months on and off. Coming in as I did here for the most part. I came in with some very innocuous comments, open to your ideas. Different IDs at each site. Of all the sites I have visited so far. Yours has been the most intolerant.
It is not that this wasn’t a similar experience to that which I had with some other sites.
But those sites that are most liberal VS most conservative are the sites that are least friendly in general. Least tolerant of other thinking.
If you want to win over the opinions of others perhaps you should open up a bit eh?
