Rep. Thaddeus McCotter: Ideologues like Sen. Jim DeMint are ‘nuts.’

On Saturday, Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (R-MI) discussed the direction of the GOP in an address to the Republican Northeast Conference in Newport, RI. McCotter, who serves as the chairman of the Republican Policy Committee in the House, chided conservative “ideologues” for controlling the party. McCotter explained that these individuals want to “purge” opponents “all the time…because they’re nuts.” He then clarified that his remarks were directed at radical conservatives like Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC):

MCCOTTER: If the Republican Party wants to become its own antithesis, which is an ideological party, we’re going to continue to have these problems. Remember, ideologues, there’s a reason why they purge all the time — it’s because they’re nuts. Hope the ideologues weren’t listening. If, however, as I said before, we understand that we represent constituencies and America is a vast country full of a variety of opinions and peoples, way of life, then we will get where we need to go. As for the attitude of the Senator from South Carolina that it is better to have fewer friends than more, that’s easier to say in South Carolina than Detroit.

Watch it:

Before Sen. Arlen Specter (D-PA) left the Republican Party, DeMint told a blogger that Specter “cut our knees from under us” and informed Specter personally that he would be supporting his far-right primary opponent. DeMint also told the same right-wing blogger that conservatives in the Senate need to aggressively “go after” other GOP moderates Maine Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe.

How does that song go? “Too much, too little, too late…”

  2. USNclerk says:

Yay, the far-right is having their very own Apocalypse, I’m bringing a lawn chair and a cooler for this!

“….aggressively “go after” other GOP moderates Maine Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe.”

    – - Maine is not in the Confederacy, Jimmah. STFU.

  4. MrWombat says:

They’ll be calling him a RINO in 3…2…1
The GOP don’t no no stinkin’ logic.

  5. Doc Rock says:

The ideologues are polarizing and de-civilizing the American dialogue and hurt the interests of most Americans.

  6. majii says:

Maybe there’s a job for DeMented in Honduras as CTCIC—(Chief Toilet Cleaner in Charge)–he’s well qualified for the job since all he loves to throw $hit at others.

  7. P.D. says:

Sorry Rep. McCotter! You can’t have it both ways! Why now? Why now are the Repugs distancing themselves from these guys? Because they know Americans are turned off. All Summer we were subjected to throngs of old, white, Tea-baggers screaming incoherently about ‘Their America!’ From harassing woman in wheelchairs to basic mayhem when anyone disagreed. Now after these ‘Consevatives’ have shown their true colors after the U.S. lost the Olympics, the leaders are getting a little nervous that the public is disgusted. Too friggin little, too friggin late..

  8. LeslieBurton says:

Isn’t this the same guy, who introduced legislation to congress insisting President Obama apologize to the police dept. in Cambridge, or something along those lines?

  9. NutWrench says:

Conservatives need to publicly denounce Limbaugh, Hannity and all the wackaloons who currently represent the Republican Party. They need to tell all these guys in no uncertain terms to STFU, GTFO, take their Idiocracy, roll it up real tight and cram it.

  10. christopher wiwi says:

As a constituant(democrat who did not vote McCotter) of Mr.McCotter`s I am happy here him talk this way,now if he can walk the walk, well that`s a different story. This is a man who will go to the grave protecting Medicare but does not want it for all because he doesn`t like big GOV`T.

  11. amish_edison says:

And the iceberg that is the Repuiblican party continues to melt away even more by their own hand. Carry on, GOP!

  12. MapleStreet says:

While I am glad that some of the GOP are starting to see this (which I have regarded as obvious for quite some time),

This kind of makes me think of someone dousing a building in kerosene, lighting a match, and pretending they had nothing to do with the fire they’ve started.

  13. jane48154 says:

McCotter is trying to have it both ways. He is just as much an idealogue as any other repub in the house. This is the same man who is against healthcare reform but is proposing the following legislation
    10. H.R.3501 : To amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to allow a deduction for pet care expenses.

  14. ctcadguy says:

Demented and his ilk are responsible for killing the Rethug Party.

Now we need to kill off the Repukes disguising themselves as Dems like Max Baucus.

  15. ElBruce says:

Cue the next purge in 3… 2… 1…

  16. EnnuiDivine says:

McCotter is covering his ass. No Dem may have won since ‘64, but it’s a district with a Cook rating of EVEN, it voted for Obama, and swinging hard to the right in times of economic turmoil aren’t gonna endear him to the electorate.

Then again, DeMint doesn’t seem to be facing any real challenge in SC. Any Dem who has pull in the state is gunning for the Gov seat. Pity.

Maybe we can coax Fritz Hollings out of retirement…?

  17. Bushie says:

Makes me wonder WTF Congress has come to, when a sitting Senator supports a Military Junta that overthrew a duly elected Government, in support of special interests and against its citizenry, and has Mitch McConnell in his corner to boot. Not only supports, but is acting again his Country’s policy. Nothing to see here folks, just ignore it. No accountability, no responsibility.

  18. Shayne says:

Hey if they want to beat up on each other who are we to stop them?

  19. Leftside Annie says:

…and the wheels on the bus go round and round ….

  20. Wiz says:

I love how Republicans are now going around denying they are Republicans, “we are independents, or maybe we are libertarians”. “Doesn’t everyone know that conservative and Republican are not the same thing.”

Lets get this straight they can no more deny who they are than they can change the color of their skin. What they are is radicals, there is nothing conservative about them. They are radicals who foresake the basic values that we hold as Americans.

  21. Shayne says:

I don’t know what the rethugs are worried about. All their pundits say they’re going to win big in the next election.

  22. pete says:

If that’s how Mr. McCotter feels? He has to leave the party or admit to being a rank hypocrite. The GOP is FUBAR and, frankly, I don’t see how any sane, honest, person can still identify themselves as a Republican.

Call it the Reagan Curse: republicans don’t speak badly of other republicans, and as a result, some of the nuttiest republicans get away with saying some of the most outrageous stuff, with little worry that they’ll be called to account by other republicans. McCotter is trying to reverse the curse, but he’s only one sane voice, in a chorus of crazy.

    Good luck.

  24. Hoodathunk says:

The next evolution of Republicanism. Run around like a bunch of cats trying to cover up in a round room with tile floors.

  25. P.D. says:

I find this odd. All week we were being told it was the DEMOCRATS who are divided. Remember in 2008 when MSM told us that Bill and Hillary were going to destroy the Domocratic Party and the election was going to be a nail-biter? What happened? Hillary is the Sect. of State and Obama kicked McCain’s butt.

  26. singe_101 says:

I think he’s right. Serve the corporations and wealthy in a more dignified way. Just gradually increase the rich-poor gap and deficits. No need to be obnoxious.

  27. What the GOP REALLY means ... says:

Like Wal-Mart employees, we’re a tight family. There are bonds to be preserved, and you don’t want to jump bond, you know what I’m saying? We make it hard for the less desirable groups to talk to us. Just look at your avg. student body. You have a bunch of undesirables (demlibs) surrounding us, the cute cheerleaders and brawny football players. We set the tone. We choose who comes and goes. Thadeus McCotter, you are a TRAITOR!

  28. Ape-Man says:

The generic medical term is ‘deluded’. It’s crazy alright.

  29. Buckie Boy says:

Uh, never trust a Republican, a good motto to go by.

In advertising there are three groups you get cash up front from..

    1. Bands
    2. Religious Groups
    3. Politicians

None of them can be trusted.

  30. What the GOP REALLY means ... says:

I’m informing McCotter that I’m supporting his far, far, far, far, far, far, far, far, far-right opponent in the upcoming election.

  31. singe_101 says:

I see the light, Thad is right.

I mean, why have some hothead in Washington speaking out against the Constitution? Just pass a nice Patriot Act or Freedom Edict and ignore the Constitution, quietly. Have some flight-suit photo-ops, tours of green zones within civilian massacres, and have lots of vacations. Easy!

  32. singe_101 says:

Who’s his opponent, a cave man? I’m in! Thog ‘10!

Or some sort of fierce hunting dog.

  33. christopher wiwi says:

I thought the president set policy on this not congress, isn`t Dementor committing sedition by going to Honduras?

  34. christopher wiwi says:

    singe_101 were you being SNARKY?

  35. GeeDubs says:

Oh, I hope the idealogues DO ‘go after’ Collins and Snowe. They’ve been providing a fig leaf of protection to what’s left of their party. The real Republicans shouldn’t be able to hide behind their skirts – not that there’s much to hide behind other than the pretense of civility. And once that’s stripped away (which it pretty much is anyway), than they’ll have even bigger losses in 2010 and 2012.

  36. GeeDubs says:

Ooooh, you big bad brawny football players are gonna stomp on everybody, ain’t ja? Know what happens to most high school football players and their arm candy? They turn into blobby couch potatoes smacking their hard-lined women in the face because they won’t get them another drink.

  37. wisdomofwords says:

Until the repub representatives distance themselves from the likes of Limbaugh, Hannity and the Becks, I’m not taking them seriously when they critizise one another. The whole bunch of them are idealogues.

  38. pags2 says:

Republican internecine warfare is good for the Dems. They don’t have to beat up the Republicans too much since they are doing it to themselves. This is a win-win situation for the Dems. Even if Republicans gain seats in elections, it is unlikely that the GOP will be able to mount a credible challenge. There is no candidate that can bridge the differences between the radical right and the moderates.

  39. GeeDubs says:

How many moderate Republicans are left? If GOOPer Really is the true voice of his party, why would anyone (sane that is) want to stay in it?

  40. pags2 says:

    GeeDubs says:
why would anyone (sane that is) want to stay in it?

There are state Republican party organizations whose members are not about to cross over to the Dems.

  41. RUCerious says:

Republikkans are becoming the party of the saber tooth squirrel.

  42. RTHAhockey says:

McCotter is one of the few voices of reason left in Congress. I really think this guy does his best. I’d like to see 3/4 off the guys run out of congress. Many are making a living screwing us citizens and putting us into greater debt. DeMint is one guy I’d love to see gone, but Frank and Feinstein are others too. One day reason will set in and leaders will come from the center.

  43. Mr.Duke says:

    Who exactly is nuts?

President Barack Obama has increased the U.S. marketable debt to an unprecedented $6.94 trillion as he borrows to spur the world’s largest economy. Goldman Sachs Group Inc. predicts the country will sell about $2.9 trillion of debt in the two years ending next September.

    More debt, awesome.

  44. Sahu says:

My favorite part of this story is how “the Republican Northeast Conference in Newport, RI” had to go all the way to Michigan to find a House Republican to address them. When you start being shut out of entire regions of the country, it might be time to resist the urge to “purge all the time.”

Wait, what am I saying. You’re doing a heckuva job GOP!

  45. estetik says:

McCotter is a nut in his own right. He tried to bring a bill to the House floor to give everyone a tax credit for vet bills. saç ekimi
