English rock group Muse asks Beck to retract his endorsement of them. (Updated)

muse44

Last August, hate radio host Glenn Beck played a song by “one of his favorite new bands,” the English rock group Muse, claiming that the band endorses his radical anti-government views. The UK Telegraph reports that Muse asked Beck to retract his endorsement of them, prompting Beck to childishly claim the album he once praised is “awful and you should never go out and buy it”:

Beck, an outspoken conservative known for his caustic attacks on Barack Obama, praised a song on [Muse's] new album The Resistance for warning against the dangers of “one world government”. Describing their music as “absolutely fantastic”, Beck implied that the band members shared his concern about the centralisation of power by liberal politicians. [...]

But Beck withdrew his recommendation after being emailed during the show by a representative of the band.

“They would like me to retract my endorsement,” Beck told listeners. “My apologies to Muse for saying that I like them. I didn’t mean to destroy all their credibility and all their coolness.

“It’s an awful album and you should never go out and buy it.”

Update Apparently, Muse did not ask Beck to withdraw his endorsement:

According to a spokesperson for Beck: "After raving about Muse for four minutes, Glenn made a joke about their representatives emailing him to stop. While it is entirely possible that Muse do not like having Glenn as a fan, he was making a joke and their representatives never reached out to him."

Put little Glenny back in his crib. He doesn’t play well with others and he’s getting a little cranky (nasty little shit is what he’s growing up to be).

Beck, you didn’t destroy anything other than your own credibility. How cool can “Crying Man” be?

Beck: “It’s an awful album and you should never go out and buy it.”

    – - If you’re not familiar with the band, I suggest that you acquaint yourself. You’ll be hard pressed to find a band that can deliver driving rock anthems, haunting lullabies, symphonic compositions and span the breadth of stylings that Muse can.

I would have figured the Mormon Beck for an Osmonds man.

  8. Steppenwoof says:

LOL, Comedian, you’re such a pud. I’m still waiting for your head to explode on live TV. Don’t disappoint me.

  9. Xisithrus says:

Well, looks like Beck has lost the great blubbery walrus battle by not being able to get people to kiss his butt.

Im sure Steele will be piling on Beck after his inappropriate affair with El Flush Bo’s clamshell and wanting to look like he can stand up to crowing craniums

  10. irv says:

I think it would be better to use his first and last name in the headline. I thought at first, TP meant Beck (of Odelay, etc.).

  11. ElBruce says:

“It’s an awful album and you should never go out and buy it.”

To be fair, he just kind of tossed this part off half-heartedly.

The really amazing thing is that this wasn’t two different episodes. On the audio track I listened to queued up to where he starts talking about the band, he gets to the 4:30 mark and already has an email from the band’s manager telling him to retract his endorsement of them, which he then reads. That’s some pretty quick action there. Of course, what that also means is that either the band, their manager or someone else with their email address listens to Glenn Beck, so…

I think it was Crooks & Liars that added some more dimension to the story. Beck had never even heard of Muse until his daughter(?) played one track for him, so his endorsement of the band was already completely bogus.

    Which should surprise no one.

  22. Zimzone says:

How would YOU like to be endorsed by Beckerhead, the FoxSucker?

You tune in, I don’t watch insane cry babies on ClusterFox.

  23. Purple State says:

For the record, Beck was probably being sarcastic about the “awful” remark. I think this was covered at Media Matters before–Beck found it hilarious and made a tongue-in-cheek comment about how he hates them now that they asked for a retraction.

I find Muse to be a great band, regardless of anyone’s recommendation. You just won’t find me at a Muse concert rocking out with Beck anywhere near me.

  31. P.D. says:

@28, I really don’t care if it has been debunked. The fact is, Beck is acting like a juvinile because someone dissed him. He could have denounced THEM, but instead denounced their music when he said himself he had liked them. THAT is juvinile!

  40. Xisithrus says:

  55. Shayne says:

It is hilarious that Fox needs to force feed their ratings to their viewers so they believe they’re not idiots for watching such stupidity.

  56. barfly says:

Explain why no one watches msnbc….

Easier to explain Fox’s numbers. Do their high ratings extend through the entire week, or just the weekend?

Local Fox broadcast affiliates (not cable, broadcast) air Fox News on the weekends – something MSNBC cannot do, being a strictly cable news network. That’s hundreds of localities broadcasting Fox News, and artificially pumping up their ratings numbers.

  57. NinerFan says:

Crazy Legs: “Explain why no one watches msnbc….”

From Media Bistro: “Though the numbers were down, MSNBC finished #2 in the A25-54 demo in primetime. MSNBC’s 8pmET show “Countdown” was down 5% year-over-year in the demo while the 9pmET show hosted by Rachel Maddow was up 61% in the demo and up 92% in Total Viewers (compared to Dan Abrams’ show airing last August at 9pmET). Maddow also topped CNN’s Larry King in the A25-54 demo.”

Crazy people often take hyperbole to new heights. This crazy Beck fan thinks nobody watches MSNBC. That’s crazy. Interesting that the only MSNBC show showing real strength these days is the one hosted by their most liberal host.

    Barfly, great point.

And, let’s not forget that FOX actually provides compensation at times to rural stations who will run their stuff. And, let’s not forget the strange practice among conservative-owned cable outlets of putting FOX news on their basic cable and putting MSNBC on special packages.

But, really, the entire non-argument is just a canard to make stupid Beck fans like “Crazy legs” feel good about themselves. If FOX and it’s conservative talkers were such a strong force, then Obama shouldn’t have been able to win by the largest margin in 30 years. Crazy Beck Fan needs to get a handle on reality.

Crazy Legs, why do you bring up the comparative ratings between Faux News and MSNBC? What point do you hope to establish?

You seem tom imply that the ratings success of Faux News demonstrates a triumph of the conservative message in the marketplace of ideas. Is this a reasonable assessment of your intent?

  71. the Lone Voice of Reason says:

Maybe crazy legs could also explain why only 1% (3 million) Americans watch Fox News and 99%(300 million) do not.

  75. belaccifer lacca says:

can anyone name one cool entertainer that does endorse the likes of Beck?

Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert… without Beck there’d be so much less laughter in this world… ‘Finally a man who says what people who aren’t thinking are thinking.’

  76. nanlichi says:

Do all Mormons cry like Becky? Could that be the source of Salt in the GSL?

How about you Crazy Loser, cry much?

  77. the Lone Voice of Reason says:

I have been watching Stewart skewer republican’s when Beck was a lowly radio host, way before crusty the old conservative mainstream even knew who he was. What he and Colbert do is far from endorsement.

  78. belaccifer lacca says:

What he and Colbert do is far from endorsement.

Perhaps… but one should never look a gift horse in the mouth… and I assume the rules are similar for a gift ass…

  79. the Lone Voice of Reason says:

You don’t really believe Stewart “needs” Beck to be funny do you? There is plenty fodder for them.

  80. nanlichi says:

Not an endorsement, just recognition that the ape shit antics of Becky provide fodder to skewer the idiots.

Bush left a huge void in the “easy to ridicule” category and Becky and the teabaggers are trying to fill it.

  81. the Lone Voice of Reason says:

A huge void? Have you heard of Sarah Palin or Michelle Bachman? The examples are not finite.

  82. belaccifer lacca says:

Have you heard of Sarah Palin or Michelle Bachman?

Yes, there is fine work being done all over on the ‘bat-shit crazy’ front… Republicans have got that covered, I think we all recognize that.

I merely point out that while without Beck we would not perhaps experience a huge void, we’d definitely miss out on a huge hemorrhoid…

  83. nanlichi says:

Sarah is doing a marvelous job, as is Bachman, and the Ensigns and Sanfords pitch in where they can, but Bush was a marvel and we need Becky to cry and rant and see conspiracies in the clouds too.

It will be years, maybe never, before the world produces another bumbling, stupid, rambling, ass like Boy George.

  84. ralph the wonder llama says:

Bush really was a savant in this respect, wasn’t he? Just a prolific, productive source of material for ridicule. It’s like the NBA when Jordan retired. Who’s gonna fill those shoes?

Sure, there’s no shortage of guys who can show their skills, shoot the J, make the clutch plays… but who has the genius for the game to take it to the next level?

Bush was that guy for Jon and Stephen.

  85. RUCerious says:

Benn Gleck, a fine role model for the sissy weenie crowd.

  86. nanlichi says:

Maybe that’s what the Bush Museum will be, a celebration of his greatest fck ups, his worst speeches, his infatuation with bald men…. who he really was.

  98. ralph the wonder llama says:

erronk has a point… why should anyone take Beck’s own words as factual representations of reality?

If, as erronk claims, it was all a joke played by Becky… then the linchpin of the joke is that Beck has any credibility left at all. Because the only way it works is if people believe what Beck says about the email. And when Beck reveals that the joke is on them, it’s only because they believed what Beck told them.

The logical result? No one who believed what Beck said on this show will want to believe anything he ever says again.

Once again, right-wingers show they don’t possess the humor gene.

Of course, since Standard Right-wing Excuse #2 is “I was only joking”, there’s a good bet that Beck is simply following the playbook:

    1) make stupid statement

    2) respond to blowback from stupid statement — consult playbook:
    a) attack messenger
    b) say it was all a joke
    c) claim “Clinton Did It Too” (update: insert “Obama” for “Clinton”)

    3) pretend nothing ever happened

  119. Trollspotter says:

    aaronk says:

I’m sure this aaronk from Illinois who was born in Texas would know the details of local politics from a completely different state which were discussed by me a few nights ago.

Right, because people never go from one state to another. Especially states that are very close to each other. Good point, aaronk.

  120. Trollspotter says:

    aaronk says:

I’d be glad to. Here’s the deal. I prove it privately to you, you admit it publicly on this site and issue me an apology for the misidentification. Deal?

No. Prove it publicly. Right here, right now. The floor is yours. Go.

  121. ralph the wonder llama says:

Careful, Trollspotter… erronk may be trying to punk us just like his hero Beck.

He’ll tell us a lie about not being a different aaronk, and then laugh at us when we take him at his word. Apparently right-wingers enjoy that kind of “humor”.

So it’s best just to not trust anything he says, is the lesson I’m taking from this.

    aaronk says:

well, the aaronk who you are referencing listed the states he has lived in, and none of them are my state. I’m sure your research will show you what state I really live in, because we were just talking about it a few nights ago. None the less, it wasn’t Kentucky, Texas, or Illinois.

So how far is Illinois from Indiana? Super super far? They don’t share a border or anything, do they?

  124. MC5 says:

Kentucky, Texas and Illinois are celebrating.

  125. ralph the wonder llama says:

erronk still thinks anyone here believes anything he says.

    That’s cute.

  126. bluesunflower says:

“They would like me to retract my endorsement,” Beck told listeners. “My apologies to Muse for saying that I like them. I didn’t mean to destroy all their credibility and all their coolness.

“It’s an awful album and you should never go out and buy it.”

Okay I’m sorry, but that made me laugh.

Trollspotter, you don’t think we can take erronk at his word?

When has he ever lied to us?

Exactly. Not a very trustworthy sort, this aaronk. I’d certainly keep an eye on him. He also admitted to shoplifting, you know.

    aaronk says:

I know everyone here has some dirt in their past, well mine was shoplifting! I’ve stolen thousands of dollars worth of merchandise when I was a bit younger (16-17) and I never got caught! Looking back, I feel ashamed and I feel like a loser, as I should and so should all shoplifters. But I did never get caught, which I’m thankful for and I dropped the habit like a hot potato.

  129. Trollspotter says:

    I don’t know, aaronk.

You lied about not defending Glenn Beck. You lied about being respectful to Ted Kennedy. You lied about Richard E. Ralston. You tried to claim that Adolf Hitler was a left. You’ve said many ridiculous, easily debunkable things.

    You seem pretty dumb.

  130. bluesunflower says:

Psst, Crazy Legs? I can explain ALL your questions. That is, if you can read.

So see? They go online. FOX and FOX News has nowhere NEAR the amount of numbers that CNN and MSNBC have when it comes to fans. Not even close. MSNBC actually slaughters FOX.

So keep your crazy talk, because it’s certainly crazy.

But bluesunflower! How is MSNBC doing in the all important non-tech savvy curmudgeon demographic!?!?

We must not allow a curmudgeon gap!

    aaronk says:

Keep making yourself look stupid…it’s fine with me. By the way, why don’t you listen to that audio again and notice the laughter in the background when he is talking about the “email” he received from MUSE?

I’d be laughing too, frankly, if it were real.

How many times have we heard a wingnut walk something back with “I was just joking!”

If they were joking, they would have been funny to begin with.

But if you’d care to explain the joke to me, I might reconsider my opinion. I just can’t imagine the train of thought during the commercial break that would say “you know what would be hilarious, if MUSE made me retract my comments about them.” How would that be funny to anybody? Explain please? While you’re at it, we’d still appreciate any link whatsoever supporting your claim that Beck says it was a joke.

    .

    aaronk says:

Oh, I see…I had to ctrl-f to find what you were talking about. There is a non-member posting using the handle “aaronk” on that website, so it must be me right?

Makes sense. Did you not support John McCain in the last election? Did you not think and/or hope that McCain would win?

Or was that a “joke” too?

Because it sounds a lot to me like you’re now claiming you were an Obama supporter. :)

  134. barfly says:

I, however, am not dumb enough to give out personal information on a blog site….every heard of identity theft idiot?

    Shorter aaronk:

I’m a liar, and none of the claims I made regarding myself can be affirmatively proven.

  135. barfly says:

    Crazy Legs says:

    False.

    Your proof?

I’ve already presented mine, where’s yours? My proof is readily available – just turn on your non-cable broadcast Fox affiliate next weekend, and watch Fox News – something you will be unable to do with MSNBC, because it is only aired on cable.

  136. Ape-Man says:

    Makes sense.

I can’t agree here. There was no smoking gun, and a lot of people use their first name, last initial. Aaron isn’t exactly a seldom-used name, and lots of people have a last name that starts with K.

Well, to be fair, on this morning’s show (10/05/09), Beck did claim that he was joking when he said that. (I listen to his show for comedy value on my drive to work).

Beck is trying to claim that it only seemed serious “when taken out of context”, which is nonsense, because there was no context to take it out of. He also seems to believe that it was obvious to any “critical thinker” that it was a joke.

Now, I consider myself to very perceptive and a critical thinker. I also did not get that was a joke, and even upon relistening to the entirety of the segment (since he claims MMFA took it out of context), it’s still not apparent that it was a joke. The laughter in the background, which Beck claims is the tell, could easily be attributed to his staff laughing at Muse’s complaint (assuming it were real).

I’ll be the first to admit that it did seem odd that there was a response from a representative of Muse so quickly, but stranger things have happened.

  139. majii says:

I taught high school for 33 years.

erraneck has implied that he’s a college student.

After reading his posts for a period of time, I have come to doubt this. He’s either an under-achieving high school student or attends college and pays someone else to complete his assignments. The time he spends on the intertubes indicates that he doesn’t apply himself to his studies the way he should (if he’s even in school).

    aaronk says:

I know everyone here has some dirt in their past, well mine was shoplifting! I’ve stolen thousands of dollars worth of merchandise when I was a bit younger (16-17) and I never got caught! Looking back, I feel ashamed and I feel like a loser, as I should and so should all shoplifters. But I did never get caught, which I’m thankful for and I dropped the habit like a hot potato

Note the first sentence. “their” should be replaced with his/her past to add clarity, and the second part of the sentence “well mine was shoplifting” could provide more clarity and cohesion to the first part of the sentence if it stated “and my dirty secret is that I was once a shoplifter.”

Bragging about never getting caught makes him sound like he’s 5 years old— not like a college student

The sentence beginning with, ” I’ve stolen thousands….” lacks proper punctuation—–a comma is missing

“But I never did”——–is better stated as—”I never was arrested for these crimes……

These are just a few of the weaknesses I’ve noticed in his writing. When his writing is compared to the writing of others here, his doesn’t measure up. The writing of true TPers is clearly superior in sentence structure, clarity, and originality. TPers are also superior in knowing and documenting facts.
