Bachmann: ‘I have no reason to doubt that [Obama] wasn’t born in the United States.’

On CNN’s Larry King Live last night, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) was asked if she agreed with Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) that birthers are “crazy.” “That’s a non-issue,” replied Bachmann. “In my district, it’s a flat out non-issue.” King and guest James Carville pressed Bachmann to answer the question, but she continued to dodge it by saying her constituents just wanted to know “where are the jobs?” Eventually, King put her on the spot and she voiced support for the birthers:

KING: Congresswoman, I am — Congresswoman, the only thing was the question was simple — do you believe the birthers? Forget the district, forget the jobs for a moment. Do you believe President Obama was born in the United States?

BACHMANN: I have no reason to doubt that he wasn’t born in the United States. I have none. The only place that this issue comes up is on the left. You don’t hear people on the right bringing this issue up.

Bachmann appears to have misspoke though (she intended to say she has no reason to doubt Obama “was born” in the US). Later in the interview, when asked if she believed that Obama was “born somewhere else,” she replied, “The president has shown his birth certificate.” Watch it:

In the same segment, former Bush press secretary Ari Fleischer tried to compare birthers to Democrats who thought President Bush didn’t win Florida in 2000. “There were many people who called him illegitimate and said that he lost Florida despite there being no evidence of that being the case,” said Fleischer.

I’m glad crazy Michelle was on ‘Larry King’. Give this woman a platform to show just how nuts she is.

Michele: The only place that this issue comes up is on the left. You don’t hear people on the right bringing this issue up.

    – - Wow, some chutzpah there, Michele.

  3. ralph the wonder llama says:

    Totally agree, P. D.

A couple of things about this article, though… Bachmann says:

I have no reason to doubt that he wasn’t born in the United States.

As any close observer of language knows, this actually means that she believes he wasn’t born in the United States, since she doesn’t DOUBT that he wasn’t.

I tend to think Crazy Shelly isn’t a close observer of language and isn’t that clever, but let’s acknowledge at least the freudian slip when it’s showing.

    She also says:

The only place that this issue comes up is on the left. You don’t hear people on the right bringing this issue up.

See, this is why I have a hard time believing she’s clever enough to pull that linguistic judo I pointed out above. She’s just delusional.

Either that, or she thinks everyone else is as stupid as the constituents who keep voting for her (apologies in advance to pete).

  4. P.D. says:

The Left? If I remember correctly, when the Left brought up the fact McCain was born in Panama, DEMOCRATS told the Left to back off. What do you think about that Michelle?

  5. ralph the wonder llama says:

Whoever would have thought at the time that Scott McClellan would emerge as the most honest and forthright of the Bush-era press secretaries?

  6. What the GOP REALLY means ... says:

The left keeps reporting on all this stuff. If they can stop proving things happen, things wouldn’t happen in the firt place.

Who knew Orly Taitz was a leftist? Or Alan Keyes? Or Jim Geraghty? Or Joseph Farah? Or Michael Savage? Or — well, you get the idea.

Does Michelle truly expect me to believe these voices are all coming from the left?

  8. Reggie says:

The only place that this issue comes up is on the left.

Crazy Shelley is so far to the right that virtually 99% of Americans are to the left of her, so maybe there is a grain of truth in her statement.

  9. Mike Hunt says:

I imagine in the future some pathologist performing an autopsy on Shelly will crack open her skull and hear a giant vacuum-like sucking sound. On closer examination of the cavity the pathologist will discover that not only was her cranial cavity empty on the day of her autopsy, but it had likely been empty for her entire life.

  12. P.D. says:

I still can’t believe this woman was re-elected! She is an embarassment. Lord knows, I cringe when I see her.

  13. What the GOP REALLY means ... says:

Apparently, Ari, you guys had doubts you would win; otherwise you wouldn’t have taken to the supreme court a petition to stop the democratic process of counting the votes.

Your side’s mounting challenges to Obami’s birth certificate, on the other hand, is hardly eliciting chirping sounds in the lower courts.

  14. EnnuiDivine says:

Surprisingly, Bachmann’s been largely silent on birtherism. She’s espoused every other batshit insane right-wing conspiracy theory, but doesnt seem to be a birther. Huh.

    Also, Ari..Ari..Ari..

    You’re a pathological liar.

  15. ElBruce says:

Disagreeing with the SCOTUS would be more of a tenther-like position than a birther-like position, if youw ant to compare. However, the SCOTUS wasn’t even ruling on a point of constitutionality when they stopped the recount. The decision just stated that they wanted to do it and that it shouldn’t ever be used as precedent for anything. So it’s not even that.

  16. P.D. says:

What ever hapeened with her son? Remember when she told people that the Community programs were brain washing our youth. And he joined one? I never heard anything else after that.

Slip or not, this is what you’re putting up to call ralph a birther.

You mean like the countless times that msnbc and cnn referred to obama as “osama?” Selective outrage much?

    No proof? Shocker!

  53. Wiz says:

When the radical right compares Bush 2000 to whether Obama was born in the US is an effort to establish an equivelency that is false. It is like comparing a murderer to someone who ran a stop sign, saying they are both lawbreakers. Bush was selected by a 5-4 Supreme Court which has no power to select a President. Obama was certified as born in the US by the State of Hawaii which has a definite right to do so.

  55. hellinabucket says:

You forgot flocks noose. And, no, my outrage only exists, because somewhere deep in the ghiadome blackhole abyss you call a cranium, you hope I am outraged, selectively, when I am not

  58. Levi the Oracle says:

Bachmann speaks in double negatives to obscure what she really means. It is a typical distraction for Republican politicians.

  59. gummble-bee-itch says:

I suppose that TP ends up with the really stupid trolls because other lefty blogs have better moderation. Please point out where I agreed with Crazy Shelly.

Then re-read my first comment on this thread.

Then have someone read it you out loud.

Then have someone explain it to you.

Then acknowledge that your illiteracy and incoherence may garner sympathy from others, but they don’t excuse your continual foolishness.

And around here, we find them darn amusing, because of your determination to mine their depths for your performance art.

  62. Xisithrus says:

I dont agree with Bachmann because she doesnt ever have solutions, just points fingers.

  63. pete says:

Thank you for your concern, ralph. Crazy Shelly is a bit of a millstone around our necks up here.

But I would be interested to hear the stupid troll’s list of outrageous statements/actions from Ventura, Wellstone, and Franken so that I can compare them. Please note that both Ventura and Franken, as entertainers, said some pretty outrageous things but I’m talking about their comments during reasoned political discourse.

Then there’s the voting record. Franken hasn’t had time to really establish one but Wellstone obviously considered the actual merits of legislation rather than the politics and Ventura’s term as governor was fairly unremarkable besides his relationship with the press.

Frankly, I would think the trolls would love Jesse. He actually did everything within his authority to reduce the size of Minnesota government and his whole term was a battle to get him to sign ANY spending bills. That’s the kind of thing they claim they want to see.

  64. Levi the Oracle says:

    Crazy Legs,

I can understand getting bored with the constant appearances but I’m hopeful that she will earn enough national competition to rid my beloved Minnesota of this embarrassment. So, please bear with us. Every time she opens her mouth she earns a little more opposition.

Hey Crazed Person with Legs, have you gone over to look at the Keating Paper or the Wiki entry they gave you on the Florida recount yet? Check it out. It’s good reading. Turns out that if those “states-rights” conservatives on the court had actually been advocates of states’ rights and let the State of Florida count all its votes, we never would have had Bush as president.

My, my, how that changed the world. It’s funny what a political coup in the world’s oldest “democracy” can do to the world isn’t it. 9-11, Iraq, The Patriot Act, kidnappings, torture, Katrina… all of it didn’t have to happen except for your “States Rights Conservatives” on the Supreme Court.

  102. NinerFan says:

I understand why conservative trolls steer discussions off topic, but why would liberals around here cooperate and help steer discussions off topic to spar with an idiot? Check yourselves people. If you’re not responding with facts and arguments on topic, the troll wins.

  103. stefan says:

In Loony Town, when a right-winger says “Obama was born in the United States”, it’s code for “I have to say this in public so the Liberal Media doesn’t say mean things about me but I’m with you, fellow nut-jobs, wink wink”

I’m sure sure there’s a Birther version that accepts he was “technically” born in the US, but his parents spread Muslim soil under the birth bed, or whisked him off to Iraq to be anointed with heathen oils. Some little bizarre detail that makes him “really” an Evil Islam-o-fascist of the worst kind.

  104. NinerFan says:

stefan: “Some little bizarre detail that makes him “really” an Evil Islam-o-fascist of the worst kind.”

Right. I think that detail is that he is black.

  105. NinerFan says:

By the way, if Obama was walking around holding hands with Islamic dictators like Bush always did with the Saudis, what do you think conservatives would be saying?

  106. NinerFan says:

Crazy legs, you’re still here, but I’m wondering if you have found out yet that your opinion that there was no evidence that Bush lost the election is not supported by the facts. The facts actually point to the opposite conclusion. Have you educated yourself yet, or do you prefer to stew in your own ignorance. I’m trying to help. I would suppose that a thoughtful person might go see the evidence and then reconsider the news and opinion personalities who have been telling you lies. Are you a thoughtful person?

  107. ralph the wonder llama says:

Except she didn’t even say that. She said she has no reason to doubt that he WASN’T born in the US.

The rules of grammar say that this means she believes (”doesn’t doubt”) that he was born outside the US (”wasn’t born in the US)

Plainly stated, Crazy Shelly went on Larry King and admitted that she’s a birther.

I’m sure sure there’s a Birther version that accepts he was “technically” born in the US, but his parents spread Muslim soil under the birth bed, or whisked him off to Iraq to be anointed with heathen oils.

Yeah, they try embrace explanations like the following:

As the son of the Muslim father, Senator Obama was born a Muslim under Muslim law as it is universally understood. It makes no difference that, as Senator Obama has written, his father said he renounced his religion. Likewise, under Muslim law based on the Koran his mother’s Christian background is irrelevant.

  108. Reggie says:

    Rick Martinez says:

    I wish I had a girlfriend.

I thought Mark Koldys and Eric Odom were your girlfriends, why do you need a third one.

Nice hat, do you wear it to hide the bald spot?

  109. johnny dol1ar says:

Jeffy Bovine, guess who wrote the following:

“Patterns are a wonderful thing. They are especially probative in legal cases, as they tend to show purpose, motive, a common scheme or plan. In short, they can disprove more benign explanations like ignorance, error, or coincidence.”

If you ask around, we can help you find some kind soul to declare you officially retarded and find you a nice room.

  110. NinerFan says:

Maybe Pat Pomery has seen the Keating Report. Pat, your thoughts? Don’t you think principled “states’ rights” conservatives should have let Florida count its ballots?

And, since the report clearly shows that Gore would have won if all the votes were counted, can you really blame liberals for questioning GW Bush’s legitimacy? I mean, you’re a reasonable person, right?

  111. stefan says:

I know that, grammatically, she used double negatives that when parsed out, translated into Bachmann saying she doubted Obama was a US citizen.

But I think she really was trying to spit out the words – for the sake of appeasing the Librul Media perhaps – that she accepted his citizenship. Only, her brain wouldn’t let her actually say it all the way.

I suspect she *personally* believes he’s a US Citizen, but she has to play this crazy game of going along with her wack-job base yet not appearing TOO crazy (by her low standards) on TV.

Life is harder when you’re a hypocrite.

  112. rj1008 says:

I don’t know if this lunatic showed her birth certificate already. Even if she did, that doesn’t prove her status. For that matter, we need to take a closer look at the birth certificates of all the GOP leaders in Congress as well as Fox news “mental” cases. We need to find out what’s there in their birth certificates that President Obama’s birth certificate doesn’t have? We need to find out if this lunatic entered this nation illegally as a child and bribed the state officials to create a birth certificate for her. May be her illegal immigrant parents did. Let’s check everybodies certificates now. We need to see her hospital birth certificate, get sworn statements from the doctor and the staff who delivered her and if any of the staff members expired already, let’s go and get sworn statements from their families as well. We need to go back couple of generations to find the truth about this lunatic Bacchman. Until then, she is a illegal immigrant for me. How about that? I think it’s time the Democrats start questioning the authencity of the birth certificates as well the actual event of every GOP leader. That’s the only way to put these lunatics in their place.

  113. ralph the wonder llama says:

I suspect you’re right, stefan. I think she got tripped up by language. That risk is generally increased by muddled thinking and a desire to parse the truth, and I suspect that’s what happened here. But I disagree completely with your judgment that

she *personally* believes he’s a US Citizen, but she has to play this crazy game of going along with her wack-job base yet not appearing TOO crazy (by her low standards) on TV

I think it’s just the opposite. I think she personally believes he’s not eligible to be President due to a foreign birth, but that she recognizes that the mainstream audience for Larry King would look at her like she’s got lobsters crawling out of her ears of she admitted it on air.

I expect she’s used to getting such looks from people.

  114. ralph the wonder llama says:

At the end of it all, stefan, I thionk we’re in complete agreement when you say, “Life is harder when you’re a hypocrite.”

  115. Xisithrus says:

    Crusty Bags.

I just want you to know I am outraged, outraged I say! Because we cant get better trolls than you.

    Heh

  116. stefan says:

hehe Ralph – I think I may be the deluded optimist who thinks “they can’t possibly be THAT crazy”, while you lean the other way. The thing is, the pessimists usually are right…

  117. pete says:

I’m not so wure that “hypocrite” is the right word. hypocrite entails betraying one’s standards and this particular stupid troll never had any standards to betray.

  118. pete says:

    Oops! “wure”=sure

  119. ralph the wonder llama says:

    Xisithrus, why the “selective outrage”?

I don’t you recall being this “outraged” when Crazy L’eggs was trolling these boards as Trajan or Pee Pee or any of his other lame sockpuppet names! His trolling was just as pathetic then as it is now.

    “Selective outrage” I say!

  120. Xisithrus says:

    Xisithrus, why the “selective outrage”?

Well, since its been the same one over and over its not really selective because I want another troll. Not the one they, troll lair numero uno, selected for us. See? =)

  121. J. Fred Smug says:

Michele Bachmann is the type of Republican (of which there are MANY) who wants to make English the “official” language of the United States, yet consistently exhibits that she has been unable to master the language herself.

  122. Xisithrus says:

Ricky M is way popular, did you see all those people hanging around him at the bar?

  123. pete says:

What’s Crazy Shelly’s bold plan for the future? “bring down their (Democratic) leadership” and “defund them”. All partisan obstruction, all the time.

    http://dumpbachmann.blogspot.com/2009/10/this-is-bizarre-even-for-michele.html

  124. pete says:

The combination of the meth and all the Bachmann talk has our stupid pet troll in a real tizzy. He’ll be screwing a light-socket soon at this rate.

  125. Reggie says:

Ricky M is way popular, did you see all those people hanging around him at the bar?

Actually there were people sitting beside Ricky Retardo When he raised the arm holding the beer, they passed put from the smell.

  126. pete says:

Of course, Crazy Shelly is one of the few elected officials with the guts to flat our call for an overthrow of our elected government because the local press/media refuses to comment on her extremism. And she’s just crazy enough to want to replace our Democracy with theocracy.

  127. Max Anax junius -1 says:

No your not, Mark Koldys only told you that so you would go down on him.

  129. burrhead says:

Is there any evidence that Rep. Michele Bachmann was born with a brain?

  130. Reggie says:

    crazy legs:
    Liberal hypocrisy.

Why is it hypocrisy to make fun of a troll sent here by Eric Odom to spam threads with gibberish?

  131. NinerFan says:

Crazy Legs: “there WAS evidence in 2000 that the election was stolen

    Really?”

I and one other poster have provided you that evidence. You pretend not to notice. That’s how we know you’re not here to discuss things. You questioned the existence of evidence. The evidence was given to you. I’m not sure why anyone bothers with you, but I gave it a shot. You’re obviously not worth the effort.

  132. Purple State says:

CL, could you please stop using the c*nt word here?

  133. ralph the wonder llama says:

    Crazy Legs says:
    Xisithrus says:

Selective outrage is what you proved to have in that you only were ouitraged at Fox News for one simple mistake that was clarified.

    “One simple mistake”?

Faux News identifies disgraced Congressman Mark Foley (R) as a (D).

Faux News identifies disgraced Governor Mark Sanford (R) as a (D).

Faux affiliate identifies disgraced Senator Ted Stevens (R-AK) as a (D).

With Senator Larry Craig (R-ID) Faux News maybe decided it was getting a little obvious, so they neglected to identify his political affiliation at all.

But doesn’t it ever work the other way you might ask? Doesn’t Faux News ever mislabel a Democrat as a Republican?

Funny you should ask. It might be evidence against any kind of bias involved if Faux News ever mislabeled as scandal-ridden Democrat as a Republican. Eliot Spitzer, maybe? Jim McGreevey? Nope.

But when a victorious Democratic challenger defeated a centrist Republican in Rhode Island, Faux News found it worthwhile to switch THOSE party affiliations.

    Interesting, no?

  134. ralph the wonder llama says:

    As you wish, Lady Edith.

  135. RUCerious says:

We have no reason not to think that BatshitCrazy Shelly isn’t in control of her miniscule mental faculties.

  136. Reggie says:

    Lady Edith:
I have been flagging the nasty troll and complaining about his use of the c word, but it has fallen on deaf ears.
Maybe you might have better luck if you complained directly to the head honcho.
    faiz@thinkprogress.org

  137. Reggie says:

    “Big Tony” Scalia says:
I think it is a very important issue, this troll has been using the c word to describe a specific poster at Think Progress.
I have flagged him repeatedly for that offense, yet he is still allowed to post here under that nickname and several others.

  138. Reggie says:

Have you notice CL hasn’t be around lately? Maybe he sleeps with the fishes…?

Tony, maybe he is wearing his fat Supreme Court Justice sock.

Nice try Twajie, you aren’t fooling anyone but yourself.

  139. pete says:

Heh! Crazy Shelly is so stupid she can’t figure out who steals the hour she loses every time she flies from Minnesota to Washington. Being a Republican, she just pretends she didn’t actually get those hours back flying East to West.

  140. Levi the Oracle says:

    Crazy Legs,

Your hatred is not welcome here. You represent the political party that hates America, blacks, Hispanics, woman, homosexuals, drug users, and the elderly.

    You are yesterday.

  141. pete says:

Schizophrenia is treatable. The sad fact is that our stupid pet troll suffers needlessly. Though perhaps he doesn’t have insurance that covers mental health care?

  142. Reggie says:

Schizophrenia is treatable. The sad fact is that our stupid pet troll suffers needlessly. Though perhaps he doesn’t have insurance that covers mental health care?

Troll Central bought them “no claims” health insurance. It doesn’t cover anything but the rates were low and it came with no deductible.

  143. Purple State says:

All I’m looking for, CL, is a retraction of the use of “c*nt” here. I’m pretty surprised TP allows that word to go undetected here, even if it’s part of an insult.

  144. dbadass says:

Well considering how f ucking scared on me you are, I suspect you really are…

  145. dbadass says:

The socially alienated housebound already have no life. I am hoping with a continued regimen of cognitive and behavioral therapy along with some basic job training we might be able to help this extreme case…

  146. SP Biloxi says:

“Bachmann: ‘I have no reason to doubt that [Obama] wasn’t born in the United States.’”

Well, I have no reason to doubt that Crazy Shelly is really from Planet Wingnuttia. There was the invasion of body snatchers and the real Michelle Bachmann was abducted by aliens. And this wingnut was beamed down to earth in her place. I am Bachmann fatigue right now. She is getting too much airtime in the media.

  147. barfly says:

    Crazy Legs says:

Restless Leg Syndrome can be easily controlled with medication.

  148. Keith says:

Exit polls in Florida in 2000 said Gore won by 300,000 in that state alone. Exit polls were always accurate in the US and around the most developed nations to about 0.2%——before the US began using voting machines made by conservatives and extremely theocratic conservatives—then they began being impossibly off.

Why do we not hear about Clint Curtis, the Florida software engineer who testified that he made the software for the state’s voting machines to “flip” the votes?

Why do we not hear from the Republican’s vote tabulation expert, Spoonamore, who said the tabulators for Ohio in 2004 must have altered the outcome from Kerry to Bush?

  149. bluesunflower says:

    “That’s a non-issue,” replied Bachmann. “In my district, it’s a flat out non-issue.”

Let’s do the math: Bachmann’s district is District 6 in Minnesota. District 6 is Republican leaning, with a CPVI value of R+7. That means slightly over half of her district votes Republican. The population of District 6 is 614,935. Half of that is 307,468. I’ll just use the half number, even though like I said, her district is slightly *more* than half Republican-leaning.

According to a well-publicized poll, 58% of GOPers don’t believe or don’t know if Obama is a natural born citizen. That means 307,468*0.58 = at least 178,331 of Ms. Bachmann’s constituents don’t believe – or don’t know – if Obama is a US citizen.

    (178,331)/(614,935) = 29%. So there’s a strong possibility that nearly a 1/3 of Ms. Bachmann’s district presumably thinks this is NOT a non-issue.

I call shenanigans on Michelle Bachmann.
