Rep. Louie Gohmert: Hate crimes bill will lead to Nazism, legalization of necrophilia, pedophilia, and bestiality.

Led by Rep. Patrick Murphy (D-PA) last night, lawmakers convened for a special session of floor speeches urging a repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. Rather than participate positively in the discussion, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) took to the floor to deliver a hate-filled response. Gohmert fired off a litany of attacks, calling the DADT repeal “perverse…social experimentation” and that soldiers are being “held hostage by a sociological attack.” His rant included a bizarre argument that the Matthew Shepard hate crimes bill would lead to a legalization of necrophilia, pedophilia, and bestiality. Later in the speech, after reading lengthy passages from the Bible against homosexuality, Gohmert said that taking away “moral teaching in America” would create a situation similar to that of Germany in the “1920’s and 1930’s” when a “little guy with a mustache” took over:

GOHMERT: If you’re oriented toward animals, bestiality, then, you know, that’s not something that can be used, held against you or any bias be held against you for that. Which means you’d have to strike any laws against bestiality, if you’re oriented toward corpses, toward children, you know, there are all kinds of perversions, [...] pedophiles or necrophiliacs or what most would say is perverse sexual orientations but the trouble is, we made amendments to eliminate pedophiles from being included in the definition. [...] But people have always been willing to give up their liberties, their freedoms in order to gain economic stability. It happened in 1920 and 1930’s. Germany gave up their liberties to gain economic stability and they got a little guy with a mustache, who was the ultimate hate monger. And this is scary stuff we’re doing here when we take away what has traditionally been an important aspect of moral teaching in America.

Several times in the speech, Gohmert credited the conservative Christian “C Street” leader Chuck Colson for inspiration. Oddly, Gohmert also meandered into a self-defensive monologue about how he is not racist because he once voted for Alan Keyes, the birther leader who has said that President Obama is “a radical communist” who “is going to destroy this country, and we are either going to stop him or the United States of America is going to cease to exist.”

The family was openly supporting hitler in the 1930s… Hitler had a portrait of Henry Ford in his office.     if you haven’t read jeff sharlet’s book The Family you should. reading about what these people believe is frightening, but it does make a lot of their positions a lot more understandable…. if no less disgusting.

What are the possible consequences of the Hate Crimes bill, when teemed with repeal of DADT, in re the potential overturning of the biblical admonition which prohibits self-castration? (I can’t cite chapter and verse, but surely it’s gotta be in there someplace). Could it be made Conservative-specific, I wonder? Something to ponder.

    Frankly, as soon as someone – anyone – starts quoting that “antique volume, written by faded men” (Emily Dickinson) I shut them off as being already beyond the pale.     Can I see a transcript? Even if the “lengthy passages” are in this clip, my stomach just isn’t up to listening to some hateful jerk like Gohmert. The thing is, I’ve never seen “lengthy passages” about how much God hates the homos. There is one short reference in Leviticus, along with a ban on shellfish and pork, a ban on haircuts and blended fabrics, but everything else that has been tossed out as “proof” is subject to bad translation and a lot of interpretation. If Gomer here has a “lengthy passage” I’d like to see the reference.

    Actually, I think the answer is simple (other than those sheep humpers): Even the barking, foaming mad fundies realize there has been a huge shift in awareness in this country. Most straight Americans have certainly come to realize that gay people are no threat to them, that they work alongside gay people without being ravished and are now content just to treat them as fellow human beings.

    In order to truly demonize gays, the fundies have to tie them to sexual behavior that few condone–sheep-humping and bone-boning is fairly repellent to most people, I’d guess–so they desperately cling to the “slippery slope”, the completely illogical belief that boys kissing boys is a heartbeat away from boys slipping it to your Labrador. No one spends so much time thinking about sexual perversion as your average fundie.

    That’s asking that Rep. Goehmert be consistent with his own argument. You’re not being fair (sccording to the right-whiner rule-book) asking right-whiners to be consistent with his own argument.

    Right-whiners can be (and usually are) in-consistent as much as they want. They hold everyone else to a higher standard than they hold themselves. It’s the right-whiner way, as far as I can tell!

    I’ve wondered about that myself. Though I have noticed that the really crazy ones seem to be speaking to a, mostly, empty room. I don’t know if people just leave when the crazy train roars through or if they schedule their time for when the Reps have better things to do elsewhere.

    Hasn’t anyone noticed what he said about “loss of morality in a nation” leading directly to “economic chaos?”

    There are two ways to interpret that. Either it means that the morality which has been lost is financial ethics (which actually makes sense, but is not what he’s addressing), or it is some personal religious belief that his god will financially reward those who follow his idea of sexual morality and will financially punish those who violate it. So he seems to have simply slipped some theology (Calvinist? Something straight from Deuteronomy?) into his stated assumptions about how the world works.

    But then he gets stranger, because he says in the same sentence, “and when you have economic chaos it is tragic but people have always been willing to give up their liberties, their freedoms, in order to gain economic stability. ”

    If you actually think about what he just said, it seems he’s saying that people have been willing to give up their freedoms to do “evil” in order to avoid the financial consequences of that evil. If economic chaos is the result of sexual immorality, and cure for it is giving up freedoms to gain economic stability, and he’s using Hitler as his example of the result of that kind of trade-off, then what he’s saying about his own preference for forcing sexual morality on other people – constricting their freedoms, “giving up liberty for financial stability” is that he’s on the side of Hitler. Or he’s saying that if you’re not willing to risk a Hitler, you should not vote to restrict people’s freedoms even if their sexual perversions lead to economic chaos.

    Got that?

    Here’s the way it reads, as I simply transcribed from the video:
