Jeb Bush: The Country Needs To Put On Its ‘Big-Boy Pants’ And Leave My Brother Alone

This morning on Fox News, the Fox and Friends hosts and former Florida governor Jeb Bush joined together to gripe about the fact that the country won’t forget what President Bush did to the country for eight years. They said that since it’s already been a whopping 10 months, everything that’s happening is now basically the fault of the Democrats:

KILMEADE: It’s been 10 months. Should Leader Hoyer be looking backwards, and is he accurate?

BUSH: I was on the plane coming up to Washington yesterday, and I heard someone complaining that their child’s acne was because of George Bush. Of course, last week the Olympics didn’t come to Chicago — that was my brother’s fault. And at some point, people are going to have to put on their big-boy pants and assume responsibility for the great challenges and opportunities our country has. I don’t know how much longer leaders — responsible leaders in Congress — can continue to say these things.

Watch it:

No, President Bush is no longer in office making decisions. But Obama and Democratic leaders are forced to make many of their decisions based on what they inherited from Bush. Eight years is a long time, and the consequences of Bush’s actions didn’t disappear just because he went back to Texas. Ron Brownstein of the National Journal recently noted what the country is still dealing with, according to recent Census figures, after Bush’s two terms:

On every major measurement, the Census Bureau report shows that the country lost ground during Bush’s two terms. While Bush was in office, the median household income declined, poverty increased, childhood poverty increased even more, and the number of Americans without health insurance spiked. By contrast, the country’s condition improved on each of those measures during Bill Clinton’s two terms, often substantially.

In terms of the deficit that conservatives are always so upset about, Matt Yglesias has put together a pie chart looking at what has actually caused the growth:

So while Fox News pundits complain about the current administration and Congress having to spend so much money, they need to keep in perspective why that spending is necessary.

Transcript:

KILMEADE: Some people think — I was listening to the Sunday shows — they were too focused on our debt, and we should be focused more on spending. Here’s what Steny Hoyer says. He says who’s to blame for all this: “Today’s new deficit estimate for the fiscal year 2009 shows two things: fiscally reckless policies by the Bush administration and actions taken to rescue our nation’s economy from collapse. While the later [sic] was absolutely necessary, the former was both unnecessary and damaging to our nation’s fiscal outlook.” It’s been 10 months.

DOOCY: Well, in the news this morning, apparently the Minnesota Twins are blaming George Bush for their loss to the Yankees last night.

CARLSON: No, they’re not. As a native of Minnesota, I can tell you that’s not true. He may be blamed for a lot of things, but that would be lack of sleep that their loss happened.

Update The Blue Texan has more on the interview over at Firedoglake.

    Jeb Bush said,

people are going to have to put on their big-boy pants and assume responsibility

People? I wonder what people he was talking about. Do those people include George Bush and Dick Cheney? Are you saying they are going to have to man up and assume responsibility for the crimes they committed against America?

Pretty soon, George Bush is going to have to put on his big boy pants and pay for his crimes.

  8. Badmoodman says:

BUSH: I was on the plane coming up to Washington yesterday, and I heard someone complaining that their child’s acne was because of George Bush.

    – - Uh huh, and did ya hear the guy two aisles down, complaining that your brother George and YOU were largely responsible for keeping his vegetable of a wife on life-support even though you didn’t want that?

  9. konchster says:

That makes about as much sense as us listening to what a Bush has too say. There are plenty of reasons the world blames his brother for the predicament it’s in. Not hthe least of which is starting two wars

  10. FOIA Gras says:

Jeb was oddly silent about his allies’ criticism of President Clinton during most of W’s occupancy of the White House. Just more Republican double standards and sour grapes.

  11. AIO says:

Some kid may not have gotten acne because of your brother, Jeb, but there are plenty of Iraqi children in the grave now because of him.

  12. House of Roberts says:

On Yglesias’ pie chart, where’s the part of the current budget, the war costs, that was kept “off the books” by the Bush Administration?

  13. paleolib says:

Sorry Jebbie. Long after you are dust your brother will still be in the history books (except in Tejas of course) as the biggest f*@#up to ever live in the White House.

  14. Chyron HR says:

I was on the plane coming up to Washington yesterday, and I heard someone complaining that their child’s acne was because of George Bush.

That’s funny, because for the past eight years I heard Republicans complaining that Bush’s failure to stop the worst terrorist attack in American history was because of Bill Clinton.

Of course that’s a little different. After all, my story actually happened, while GOB’s, I mean, JEB’s, is a lie.

  15. Xisithrus says:

Shorter Jeb: Stay asleep, do not remember the last eight years, do not remember. Elect me.

It’s going to take 100 years to pay off the $10 trillion IOU + interest that Reagan/Bush/Bush left for American taxpayers. Every American could have had free health care, free college education, six paid weeks of vacation every year, and retirement at 55 years of age if only they hadn’t elected robber barron Republicans like Reagan and the Bushes.

  23. Rosencrantz says:

Gee, wasn’t 9/11 supposedly Clinton’s fault according to Bush co? That was almost 2 years into Bush’s term. And I’m sure a 2 second google search would bring up hundreds of examples of Bush and Co blaming Clinton the whole time they were in office.

I also wasn’t aware that Iraq, Afghanistan, the Patriot Act, torture, domestic spying, etc all suddenly stopped the day Obama took office. These are BUsh’s babies, for better or worse. He can’t just shrug off responsibility for what he created simply because he is no longer around.

George says- Hehehe, they can blame me all they want, the decidering guy, that’s right go on ahead and blame me, won’t hurt abit, because….I FREE AS A BIRD, that’s right, FREE, no prison time for me, no sir, I could have BBQ’d babies on the White House lawn and no one would have said sh!t about it. Hell, I let 9/11 happen like Dick wanted, I started TWO, that’s right TWO WARS, I screwed up the Dept. of Justice, I outed a CIA agent just for fun, I made lots of War Profits and enriched my buddies, made polluting easier, water dirtier, drove the price of gas to a all time high, tortured hundreds, murdered thousands, and it was fun as all get out, how do I sleep at night….like a baby, because I don’t care, I’m FRREEEEE! What you think about this Dick?

Dick says – Bring me fresh blood from cute kittens and puppies.

  26. missmolly says:

So Jeb believes that 10 months is sufficient to clean up eight years of mess?

I’ll concede that blaming Dubya for a child’s acne is a bit far-fetched (although I’d love to hear the rationale for that). However, the DHS policies that are currently being blamed for Chicago not getting the Olympic nod WERE implemented under George W. Bush — a fact, whether you agree with the policies or not. So I guess the translation of Jeb-speak is something like “it’s Obama’s fault that he hasn’t rescinded the stuff my brother did.”

  27. slappy magoo says:

Kinda like getting hit by a drunk driver who ran a red light, then being told “come on now, you knew what you were getting into when you got in your car. Drunk drivers are everywhere.” When are you going to accept your share of the blame?”

Or how’s this for a hypothetical. You’re on a luxury cruise ship that just hit an iceberg and is sinking. The captain and his crew jumped ship and you do your best to keep the boat afloat and save as many people as possible. Alas, the boat could not be saved and many people die. And then you are blamed for not saving the boat you didn’t sink in the first place, and no one will listen to any blame of the captain and his crew, because they were great guys to have a beer with. Multiplied by several million.

  28. NinerFan says:

Too bad, Jeb. As usual, Georgie screwed everything up. He’s always been the family screw-up and nothing’s changed.

  29. johnbwarner says:

Jeb is trying hard to spin a variation on the straw man offense. Note to Jebbie: No one is saying these things. Try another line of attack. Sooner or later, nothing sticks because people know not to believe a single word that comes out of your mouth.

    Per the pie chart-
That’s 30% he is responsible for. In less than a year vs eight.

Of course… Bush entered office under far more favorable conditions than Obama did… and the massive deficit spending that Obama has pushed has been a) in response to the worst financial crisis in eighty years and b) recommended by most authoritative economists.

You conveniently left out that the Democrats have been in control of Congress since 2007.

    Two questions:

    1) who was in control for the fourteen years before that?

    and

    2) what specifically did the Congress do differently in the past two years that affected spending to any great degree?

  39. Chyron HR says:

    Tundra says:

About 9 months. Less time than it is now from when Obama was elected.

Congratulations on being the first Republican to admit that Obama has kept America safer for longer than Bush did.

  40. ralph the wonder llama says:

    Tundra says:

About 9 months. Less time than it is now from when Obama was elected. However I don’t figure Clinton was at fault. 9 months was plenty of time for Bush to correct anything related to that.

Fair enough. Are you also suggesting that 9 months has been “plenty of time” for Obama to correct anything related to the economy?

The economy being, of course, the largest single cause of an increase in spending.

  41. kasinca says:

  43. MapleStreet says:

So Reagan so influenced the country that his presidency has shone a light on the country for the next 50 years.

Bush brought freedom and democracy to Iraq and Afghanistan. And although he also did the republican “spend and borrow” (vs. “tax and spend”) that contributed to the debt, the problem became the sole fault of Obama on January 20.

And by one sex act, Clinton ruined the country for a century.

  44. SWBob says:

And at some point, people are going to have to put on their big-boy pants and assume responsibility for the great challenges and opportunities our country has.

Jeb, you aren’t your smooth talking brother are you? But, obviously, you’re working on it. Oh, it will take a hell of a lot of years to forget and recover from what you’re brother’s bosses did to this country.

    I made no such statement.

I wasn’t accusing you of making such a statement. I was asking you to clarify. You’re clever enough with language to be able to leave an unspoken suggestion with the reader, and I’m pleased to see that wasn’t the case here.

If I was going to make a statement about things he could have done in that time frame, they would involve Iraq and Gitmo.

Again, fair enough. Although I doubt if closing Gitmo would have much of an impact on the deficit.

A hundred years from now, GW Bush will still be getting credit for The Great Recession. History books will include a chapter on the only (we hope) “judicial coup” in American history that erroneously installed him as President. And he will still be considered one of the five worst Presidents in U.S. history.

And you voted for him. Pretty special.

That is not true. Jeb will be a candidate that sounds reasonable rather than what the current crop of candidates are doing. That might be enough to unite the party radical right and the moderates.

Ignore Mr. Duke and his nonsense.

These holy roller trolls are furious that their man Bush screwed everything up so monumentally.

They had their big chance, with the Presidency and with control of the Congress, to show their “principles” in action.

What a steaming load they left!

And they have the nerve to criticize the Obama administration, not even into its first year…

Y’know, someone who actually had a strong argument along these lines might take the initiative to research the answers to his questions and present them as strong supporting evidence for his claims.

When someone fails to do that and simply throws out unfounded assumptions as if they were demonstrable facts, I have to figure that there’s nothing behind them but standard right-wing prejudices.

‘GREEN’ GORE GOES GULFSTREAM: VIDEO CATCHES ECO-WARRIOR ON LUXURY PRIVATE JET
    Fri Sep 07 2007 07:48:23 ET

    **Exclusive**

As former Vice President Al Gore waits to hear if he has won this year’s Nobel Peace Prize for his tireless effort on climate change, a new video will air this weekend capturing Gore on a fuel-guzzling private jet!

Did he own the jet? Don’t know. Did he use the jet? Do know.

Greeny Gore used a private gas guzzling jet to fly to europe. Doesn’t sound like a very green thing to do. If you can’t figure that out, well, that is a “you” problem. I don’t like hearing about green Gore as he tools around in private jets and SUVs. Plus, his mansion in Tennessee uses lots of energy, too. He was finally called out on it and started getting more energy efficient. … I saw him in a gas guzzling SUV last year during an event in California. The old case of do as I say, not as I do. Phony.

Gore tarvels on jets. He often travels on commercial jets sometimes on private ones. I am sure you THINK that is some kind of gotcha because that is just how stupid you are. You WISH Gore would take a bicycle everywhere he goes so he cant be as effective as he has been advocating changes to diminish the effects of Global Climate change. Rush told you to regurgitat this and you are just stupid enough to try it. You are pathetic

Anyway, John Edward Bush has a point. Despite popular opinion on this website blaming all your woes on George W. Bush is a crutch. I look around and see little to no change with the current regime. I hear lots of talk. But little action. … In my view, the Afghan war issue will be most interesting. What will Obama do? I am betting he will ramp it up. A war that unless we kill everyone in the country can’t be won. Fighting an enemy with basically nothing to lose is rough. Ask the Brits and the Soviets if the Afghans can be beaten. Will the liberals in congress say no to continuing the war? No matter the decision, will George Bush be blamed? Well, it is your ball game now, Obama. You have all the intelligence agency information updates now. Is it a little different when you are in the White House getting the reports? I know it is easier to talk smack when you are campaigning for the job. What are you going to do?

  149. Virtual Pebble says:

I just got here. Are the trolls whining about having to eat that pie chart?

That’s really an instructive little illustration. All considered, a lot of that blue portion labeled “recession” can be attributed to past administrations too. Not just the Shrub’s, but to every administration that relaxed the rules a little bit for the financial sector. Calling Glass-Steagall…

Oh, the venality, the avarice, the greed, the humanity.

  150. Virtual Pebble says:

@ 156. Speaking of Glass-Steagall, where are Phil Gram and Jim Leach now. Comfortably, happily retired?

As for Jeb Bush, he ought to put on his own hip-waders and help clean up his fracking brother’s mess. His fracking state and it’s witless screwup of the 2000 election saddled us with that turkey, and he fracking well ought to pay a little more heed to the principle of “you break it, you buy it”.

Poor dimwitted troll. When will you understand anything, pOops? Not wiped out in the first round. Wiped out in the first set of the final. A bunch of other cities were tossed out before the IOC got to the final four.

No, it wasn’t the Shrub’s fault. People were pointing out that the process had started under Shrub’s administration, and Shrub may have even favored the US application, though he might have prefered a different city. So faulting President Obama for getting involved was hypocrisy; if GWB can get involved, then it ain’t off-limits for BHO.

Then there was the business of whining because BHO took a bit less than a day to go help out with the final sales pitch, after GWB went to Beijing for four days and stood around with his hand really really close to a beach volleyball players butt. More hypocrisy.

Nope, we’re criticizing the Republipimps for acting like a pack of schoolyard traitors who cheered when our bid went down. They were not being happy for Rio, pOops; they were happy because our great nation’s bid for the 2016 Olympics crashed. Most other people didn’t see that as cause for joy, but hte Republipimps did.

It’s not someone else’s fault, pOops. The USOC and the Chicago team know that it isn’t someone else’s fault. The other people, especially Rio, had a better case and perhaps a better venue. They certainly went over better with the IOC. The Republipimps cheering when we lost the bid wasn’t very smart or civil; it just points up the fact that you’re not on America’s Team.
