Speaker Pelosi responds to Republicans: ‘I’m in my place. I’m the Speaker of the House.’

Earlier this week, the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) put out a press release criticizing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) comments on Afghanistan, saying that Gen. Stanley McChrystal should “put her in her place.” Today, Pelosi responded during her weekly briefing:

It’s really sad that they really don’t understand how inappropriate that is. I’m in my place. I’m the speaker of the House — the first woman speaker of the House. And I’m in my place because the House of Representatives voted me there.

Pelosi added that she hadn’t heard sexist language like what was in the NRCC press release in “decades.” Watch it:

Ryan Watkins

Update Both Huffington Post and Greg Sargent attempted to contact female Republican lawmakers, but their offices refused to comment on the NRCC's remarks.

Thank you, Nancy — that pile of crap from the NRCC WAS incredibly sexist, and they needed to be called on it.

  8. Purple State says:

One hell of a comeback there.

I mean, demands of Obama’s impeachment and Pelosi’s withdrawl…do they not know that the next in line for both are still Democrats?

All sign-posts of the desperation and death throes of the republiscam party. Good response, Nancy.

The republiscams will be the ones soon put in their place — that is, permanently living amongst their former constituents with the word “former” preceding their titles.

I’m finally starting to respect the Speaker of the House.

I was about 3 years old when Tip O’Neill stepped down, and, up until now…we’ve had failures ranging from the mediocre (Foley, Pelosi) to the colossal (Gingrich, Hastert).

Knock ‘em out, Nancy. You’re finally showing us that the Dems have backbone.

  24. P.D. says:

Half these guys who hate Pelosi(My father included) couldn’t even name any of the Speakers in the Bush years. All they know is she is a woman and a Democrat. They can’t stand either. My father didn’t even know who Denny Hasert was. Unreal. They can’t stand it that a woman is in power. It freaks them out.

I have my Pelosi issue with her. But, I am glad that she has put the Party of Neanderthals in their place. Like Pelosi or not, she is the Speaker of the House and she was voted into that position. The Party of Sexists need to build a bridge and get over it, find a brain and use it, get a life, and tend to real issues in their own party.

Funny that you mentioned that! Back in the early 1980s, I was at an Army Wives’ symposium in D.C. Pink t-shirts with that saying on them were all the rage and I think several thousand of us Army wives wore them until they were totally worn out. Lots of sexist males around back then and we often were scoffed, but history has proven them wrong, eh? lol

  38. theladyorthetiger says:

Democrats are really starting to stand up for themselves (and us) lately!

Do you suppose they were just waiting for the Republicans to go as deep over the edge as they could first to show everyone where the sane people are?

  39. RUCerious says:

Did she include a hearty ‘up yours, numbnutz’ with her comment?

  40. tanglewood says:

It’s about time that she stood up to the buffoons. That being said, I am very angry and disgusted that the House schedule is now a 2 and a half work week. It seems to me that hearing should be held each and every day to get to the bottom of the Wall Street mess, tightening existing laws and reinstituting old ones like Glass Steagall….so that this never happens again.

Pelosi said they would be working 5 days a week….get back to that schedule and create a jobs program for those out of work. If we Democrats don’t buckle down and get some results soon, we will lose next November…..and I for one, don’t want to see that happen.

Having worked on the Hill, I can think of inumerable things that the Congress could be doing….if the republicans don’t want to help turn things around, they can get out of the way….at least the electorate will see we are trying to do something constructive.

    ginslinger says:

    noseeum says:
Bush is gone from office, impeachment is no longer an option.

It never was, well maybe in the fever swamps (where those little biting bugs dwell) of MOONBAT lunacy.

At the time that Bush ordered warrantless wiretaps, warrantless wiretaps were illegal under FISA. There was no “I had a good reason to do it, trust me” clause written into the law. Bush stated publicly that he ordered the wiretaps and did not seek warrants for them. Therefore, he broke the law.

What the Bush White House called “enhanced interrogation” is actually torture, which was and is prohibited by international treaties that have been ratified by Congress, signed by past Presidents, and which therefore have the force of law. By authorizing the CIA to torture poeple, Bush broke the law. Again, there was no “I had a good reason to do it, trust me” clause written into those laws.

This is all quite simple. It’s not some crazy fantasy. The laws as written were violated by President Bush. That is what impeachment is supposed to be for.

But since that’s “off the table,” we’ll just have to go with straight-up criminal indictments instead.

  53. Fred says:

    ginslinger says:
Can we expect those indictments in less than 24 business hours?

ginny, you can thank bush for putting conservatives on the run. I know I do. run gop, run. see conservatives run for the hills.

How about that stimus passed with no gop support. Same for health care soon. See, America has turned it’s back on ya. Bye bye and enjoy your time in the wilderness.

  56. SP Biloxi says:

Speaking of the Congress, heads will roll on this bit of news. I saw this on Raw Story:

House cuts workweek to 2 1/2 days

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) promised after the Democrats won the House in 2006 and then after Obama’s election this year that the House would hold longer workweeks. But as the fall of 2009 wanes, the House has taken to starting on Tuesdays at 6:30 pm and adjourning “before the sun goes down” on Thursdays.

That certainly wasn’t Hoyer’s tune in 2006, when he claimed that congressmembers were going to have to work five days a week.

“I have bad news for you,” Hoyer told reporters after the Democrats took over the chamber. “Those trips you had planned in January, forget ‘em. We will be working almost every day in January, starting with the 4th.”

The Washington Post blared this headline Dec. 6, 2006: “Culture Shock on Capitol Hill: House to Work 5 Days a Week.”

But since the House returned from recess on Sept. 8 of this year, it has stuck around to vote on a Friday just once. For what? Approving an a 5.8 percent increase in Congress’ budget.

Republican lawmakers accuse Democrats of hypocrisy, as the liberal party had previously accused conservatives of having lackadaisical work schedules when they were in power. Not everyone is turned off, however.

“Two and a half days a week is plenty of time to consider the ideas coming out of this Democrat-led House,” Rep. Roy Blunt (R-MO), once a power-broker for former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX), told Politico. “Imagine the damage they could do with five-day workweeks.”

House Democrats say they’re not holding many votes because the legislation they’ve already passed is backed up in the Senate. The Democrat-led House has already approved climate change “carbon cap” legislation and a plan to reform Americans’ healthcare options.

ginslinger should weep for his own ignorance. What a tool.

I would posit to Bill O’Lielly that the far-right is intimidated by Speaker Pelosi’s wit and intellect. You can have your empty shells Palin and Bachmann. They are all yours as Democrats, Independents and even most Republicans find them abhorrent and witless. As to the sexist losers on the Reich I say keep it up! You idiots are the best recruiting tool the Dems ever had! We’ll see to it that you all stay in your place (the minority) for a long time!

  61. Levi the Oracle says:

I was, and still am, angry at Nanci Pelosi when she took impeachment off the table. I am pleased to see that she is growing a spine, standing up to republican fascism.

I would love to find out from Mrs. Pelosi why impeachment was taken off the table. If it was because indictments would be more crippling to the Republican crime organization, I would be willing to forgive her.

Long ago I predicted Bush and Cheney will begin to face justice right before the 2010 elections. If I were running the justice department, that’s when I would do it. You would get the biggest bang for the buck, so to speak.

If Democrats are smart, and prosecute Bush/Cheney, The Republicans will lose big in 2010, and in 2012. This could very well be the end of the Republican Party and the conservative movement. Stay tuned.
