RedState’s Erick Erickson: Obama won because the Nobel Committee had ‘affirmative action quotas.’

Conservatives are already bemoaning the fact that President Obama won this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, saying that he should turn it down because he doesn’t deserve it. “Obama isn’t the first American president to win the Nobel Peace Prize, but he’s the first to win it without having accomplished anything,” writes John Miller at the National Review. RedState editor Erick Erickson went even further this morning, writing on Twitter that Obama won it because of affirmative action:

Erick Erickson's Twitter feed

In a blog post, Erickson added, “The Peace Prize reaffirms it s a joke. But now a sad joke.” Erickson also said that the “responsible thing” for Obama to do would be to decline the prize.

Update The RNC put out a statement today on the news:
The real question Americans are asking is, "What has President Obama actually accomplished?" It is unfortunate that the president’s star power has outshined tireless advocates who have made real achievements working towards peace and human rights. One thing is certain -- President Obama won't be receiving any awards from Americans for job creation, fiscal responsibility, or backing up rhetoric with concrete action.

  1. Mugsy says:

The Nobel Committee says the award is for their “expectations” of what Obama will do.

While him getting the Prize is great news, I still think it should be reserved for “achievements” not “expectations”.

Personally, I think they did so now to influce the decision whether or not to send more troops to Afghanistan.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa, who won the prize in 1984, said Obama’s award shows great things are expected from him in coming years.

“It’s an award coming near the beginning of the first term of office of a relatively young president that anticipates an even greater contribution towards making our world a safer place for all,” Tutu said. “It is an award that speaks to the promise of President Obama’s message of hope

I don’t think I could have said it better myself.

Let’s see… last week conservatives were exposed cheering when a US city lost out on its bid for the Olympics.

What can we do to expose their anti-Americanism next week?

  18. Cal Malenky says:

And you keep it classy too, Murphis.

  19. Hoodathunk says:

Calming worldwide fear about what country was going to be invaded next is a huge step for President Obama. Taking on the clean up of the mess left behind by the last tenant of the White House and doing so in a studied, patient manner is another.

While I don’t always appreciate his pace, I appreciate that whatever he is doing is working. And I congratulate him and the Nobel people for recognizing that the changes we have seen have done wonders in just 8 months. Surgery may solve some acute problems but constructive healing takes time.

  20. Buford says:

How ironic that when Obama wins The Prize, he effectively stole it from “tireless advocates who have made real achievements working towards peace and human rights”. However, when Al Gore won it in 2007, The Prize itself was panned due to it’s lack of prestige and compared by CEI to Milli Vanilli’s winning a Grammy for lip-syncing.

South Carolina Rep Joe Wilson released a two word statement, “That Ni66er?

Sarah Palin expressed sadness that she wasn’t granted the award for her outstanding foreign policy efforts in China along with her ongoing vigilance in protecting Alaska from a Russian invasion. She then accused the committee of palling around with terrorists

And in what may be an unrelated story Redstate Editor Erick Erickson was found this morning hanging nude from a rope in his closet by an intern with his hands bound. Due to the presence of saucy posters of Mitch McConnell, used containers of vaseline, a nazi SS uniform and several cages containing what could only be described as terrified gerbals police have ruled out foul play and chalked it up to simply foul taste.

I think he should turn it down. Tell them to get back to him once his work starts to show results or something.

If he doesn’t, the wingnuts will have an utter field day talking about this – and many of them would have a good point, although many others will go off the deep end, as the article at top illustrates.

    _____________

No. I think America is still the same clumsy, self-centered, gluttonous oaf it was before January 20. We’re making incremental steps towards a better foreign policy, but countries are big things that take a lot of time and energy to steer. Certainly more than nine months.

But the rest of the world perceives us differently. They see us as more open and diplomacy-minded and willing to engage. If that has made other countries more willing to engage with us, well, that certainly is a change for the better.

As for what the Peace Prize is for, Alfred Nobel said it should be awarded “to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.” That doesn’t necessarily refer to past actions. It can also refer to future potential.

There are certainly lots of other deserving people who this award could have gone to, but it went to Obama for reasons that they did not specify. They didn’t choose Obama because of his accomplishments, because he has only just begun. They might have given this award to him for what he is trying to accomplish, but I don’t think that is the reason either.

They gave Obama the Nobel Peace Prize because they wanted to kick American Republicans in the nuts, good and hard. The international community recognizes fascism when they see it, and they wanted to send a clear message that they support everyone that opposes the fascist Republican Party, and Obama is the icon for that opposition.

Many progressives feel it is their moral and patriotic duty to challenge Republican propaganda wherever we find it. This peace prize goes out as much to us as it does to Obama.

If we can’t defeat fascist Republicanism here in America, the rest of the world will have to do it eventually, and they know it.

Quite so. PowerLine is reporting on the news sarcastically and goes on to catalog ‘terrible’ recipients of the Peace Price using irrelevant arguments to justify their criticism of course.

Most amusing though is their entry for 1973:

“LE DUC THO (with Henry Kissinger) for the 1973 peace with honor bequeathed to the fortunate people of Vietnam.”

Neither of them deserved it IMHO, especially not Kissinger, but Hiinderacker chooses to complain only about Le Duc Tho, not Kissinger.

And don’t forget that “You” were the Person of the Year in 2006! :D

  93. pastcaring says:

Well, Here’s a portion of what they said on why they awarded the prize to Obama:

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 is to be awarded to President Barack Obama for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. The Committee has attached special importance to Obama’s vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons….

Thanks to Obama’s initiative, the USA is now playing a more constructive role in meeting the great climatic challenges the world is confronting. Democracy and human rights are to be strengthened.

Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world’s attention and given its people hope for a better future. His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world’s population.

    The Norwegian Nobel Committee

  94. Mike Hunt says:

    Rich H says:

He can’t really accept the Nobel and pass some watered down p.o.s. of a bill can he?

Ah, Rich. Barack can’t “pass” any bill because he is not in the legislative bracnh of government any longer. He’s in the Executive branch and there his job is to sign into law or veto legislation passed by the Legislative branch – p.o.s. or not. Basic civics 101. Try it some time.

  95. Rich H says:

    Mike Hunt,

You are a delusional son of a bitc*, nothing passes into law without the Presidents signature. I’m afraid I know much more about civics than you – so let’s not get into a pissing contest.

Did you know President Obama WON THE NOBEL PRIZE today because he specifically opposses all of the SHI* your party has done to the U.S. and the REST OF THE WORLD for the past 8 YEARS.

    SUCKS TO BE YOU. hahahahahahahahahhahaha

  96. bluehue says:

In this case the world shares and encourages the
possibilities of hope and peace. Obama has olive
branches to offer and often withholds judgement
in an effort to hear the other side. He communicates
    using the language of nonviolence.
His support of strong diplomacy over unilateral rush
to war is a profound idea after the last 8 yrs.
(Though I think he deserves it for even trying to work
with the other side right here at home).

  97. johnny dol1ar says:

Fox News is already reporting breaking news of rampart corruption inside The Norwegian Nobel Committee and also involving ACORN.

  98. Rich H says:

Their petty jealousy is telling; I can only imagine the crowing if George Dubya Bush won, citing his transformative approach in the Middle east. They, the neorepublicans, prove their own hypocracy with every utterance.

  100. Bob says:

Has anyone ever turned down the Nobel Peace Prize?

He should turn it down because people who hate him don’t think he deserves it? He might as well resign the presidency in that case. Really, WTF?!

Just as I suspected. It’s an award for NOT treating international diplomacy like a pissing contest. For approaching diplomacy DIPLOMATICALLY for once. For doing what we’re supposed to be doing anyhow.

It’s kind of the international equivalent of rewarding your child with an ice-cream cone for not throwing a temper tantrum at the mall.

Hey, we’ll take it. Ice cream is ice cream.

Actually, the Nobel Prize organization in based in Norway, not Sweden. A common mistake but deadly if you live in a Scandanavian community :)

Well, the right-wingers have a long standing history of wanting to invade the wrong countries, so… beware, Swedes!

  103. LibertyLover says:

The only prize Erickson could win would be the fickle finger of fate…

  104. Shayne says:

Perhaps the whole world was holding their breaths because they feared Bush/Cheney wouldn’t leave office. Or they were as terrified as we were that McCain would take over.

Or perhaps if we didn’t have to listen to all the negative chatter from the media we’d appreciate all the steps he has taken so far. And maybe they amount to more than any others have accomplished in such a short time.

  105. pastcaring says:

    Don’t feel so bad wingers, you still have;

    1. George Bush, the most hated president in history.
    2. Tom Delay trying to win on Dancing With the Stars
    3. Rush Limpballs judging a T & A contest.

  106. LibertyLover says:

The RNC put out a statement today on the news…One thing is certain — President Obama won’t be receiving any awards from Americans for job creation, fiscal responsibility, or backing up rhetoric with concrete action.

    Stay Classy Repubs…

  107. tombaker says:

    Oh.

So Ewick Ewickson thought the Peace Prize was “the bomb” when it was awarded to Carter, but now it’s not? Was it “the first 2 Van Halen albums” of Peace Prizes then, but more like the Van Hagar stuff now?

Safe to say he won’t have to worry about it being awarded to any R President, thus maintaining their true “rocker” cred.

  108. kscitydude says:

Ok, two great stories out this morning. Of course this one, congrats Mr. President, and the one about Rush Limbaugh being selected to be one of the judges for the Miss America contest. Wow, what are the odds that this would happen on the same day.

Lots and lots of nasty comments on websites carry these stories today from the Obama haters and the Limbaugh haters.

Or “why does Rush, Hannity, and Beck love the Taliban and hate America?” That’s all you need to do. The right is doing our work for us! Attack liberal pundits. Attack!

I agree with you. I also think that it’s a very sad sign of the state of our democracy when the people criticize the prize that’s been awarded. It signals to me that these critics do not recognize the power and rightful place of diplomacy.

RNC: The real question Americans are asking is, “What has President Obama actually accomplished?”

Well, for one thing, he’s kept this country safe from a terrorist attack much longer than George W. Bush! :-D

  115. Zooey says:

BTW, if the President “declined the prize,” as Erickson suggests, that would simply be one more opportunity for the wingnuts to whine about the “uppity president.”

F uck that shit. The Nobel Committee gave him the prize, and President Obama ought to put on his fancy duds and accept it graciously.

  116. theladyorthetiger says:

Heh. Anything that upsets the Taliban and the American Taliban has to be a good thing.

And “Affirmative Action?” Right wingers, how is this not racist?

  122. Zooey says:

    DNC response this morning:

“The Republican Party has thrown in its lot with the terrorists — the Taliban and Hamas this morning — in criticizing the President for receiving the Nobel Peace prize,” wrote DNC Communications Director Brad Woodhouse. “Republicans cheered when America failed to land the Olympics and now they are criticizing the President of the United States for receiving the Nobel Peace prize — an award he did not seek but that is nonetheless an honor in which every American can take great pride — unless of course you are the Republican Party. The 2009 version of the Republican Party has no boundaries, has no shame and has proved that they will put politics above patriotism at every turn. It’s no wonder only 20 percent of Americans admit to being Republicans anymore – it’s an embarrassing label to claim.”

    SMACK!!!

  123. LeeHope says:

OMG! The whining from the Party that lost badly in the last election, and for good reason. The Republicans have done nothing but dumb-down the weakest thinkers amongst us. The winning of the Nobel Peace Prize by Pres. Obama is definitely an affirmation of the Nov. 4, 2008 election, that we put the correct man in there, and that he is an inspiration to us and the world.

The real question Americans are asking is, “What has President Obama actually accomplished?” It is unfortunate that the president’s star power has outshined tireless advocates who have made real achievements working towards peace and human rights. One thing is certain — President Obama won’t be receiving any awards from Americans …”

And just what is it that the Republipimps have accomplished in the last 10 months? Obstruction of the nation’s business, instead of a rational criticism and reasonable alternatives?

President Obama has moved the government off dead center with regard to a number of issues, issues where President Bush’s adminstration wasn’t even bothering to tread water, issues that were being ignored, issues where problems were not being dealt with head on.

There may come a day when the Republipimp Party and it’s base comes to the realization that as a nation, we do NOT have the luxury of pulling a blanket over our heads and whining that we aren’t going to talk to anyone until they agree with us. That ain’t gonna work with our allies and even less so with our enemies and opponents. That day is not today, however. We’ve still got the same old Republipimp sock puppet to deal with saying “I don’t wanna.” and “Let’s just flush the whole thing and start over again.”

  126. SP Biloxi says:

lol I knew this would happen. The right wingnuts would go ballisic on Obama’s Nobel win. But, the GOP are known to staying classy.

  127. ElBruce says:

Oh well, he accepted it. It didn’t occur to me that the Peace Prize isn’t so much a victory lap (like most other types of honors) as a spur to achieve goals that are still in progress. So that makes sense.

Here’s a list of all the people in the world who are condemning Obama’s Nobel win:

    1. The Taliban
    2. Hamas
    3. Wingnuts

  128. Rich H says:

Did all the trolls exhaust themselves yesterday? Is it possible troll central hasn’t been able to come up with some utter bullshi* to counter this win?

Where did all the trolls go – must be hiding under the bed. They are so afraid their world is getting smaller and smaller.

You teabaggers thought rooting for other countries to hold the Olympics was a good thing, now you fools are foaming out your asses because OUR PRESIDENT OBAMA has won a very high honor at such an early stage in his presidency.

The whole world is wrong except the repugs.
    SSSUUUURRRREEEE.

  132. Rich H says:

I keep checking to see if the trolls emerge. But there are none. And I was spoiling for a fight today. I was expecting a good troll fight and all I got was Mike Hunt. How dissapointing.

  133. just the bleepn facts says:

Limbaugh just comes out and sides with the enemy: “Something has happened here that we all agree with the Taliban and Iran about and that is he doesn’t deserve the award.”

The GOP is the party of domestic terrorism.

  134. Mr.Duke says:

Anyone on this website that thought Obama had even a remote change to win this award is a bald-faced liar. Talk about one coming out of left field? This puts huge pressure on Obama regarding Afghanistan. Will the man of peace crank up the killing machine in the Kabul quagmire? Do you wait to crank up the battle after getting the award in Oslo? Or do you say “screw it” and give Gen. McCrystal what he wants/needs for victory prior to the ceremony. Or do you bailout entirely now? Decisions. Decisions. You wanted the job, Mr. Prez. Now make a decision.

  135. Marnie says:

    Let’s see.
Carter won by proxy when the Camp David Accords signers won.
Then Carter won the Nobel Piece Prize outright.
Dole, who actually won in 2000 has a NPP.
    Now Obama wins.
Lech Walesa won for intitating the events that lead to the fall of the Iron Curtian.

The Republicans kept nominating Reagan claiming he was the one who brought down the Berlin Wall, which he didn’t. But the Nobel Committee kept ignoring his nominations.

Poor Repugs, they can’t win one and now the Committee basically flips them off.
    Too sad.

  136. Crazy Cat Lady says:

    93. Levi.

I like that! The Prize belongs to US too.

I’d love to hear the President say something like that in his speech – that he’s accepting it for all of us who don’t hate, and want peace.

    Congratulations, Mr. President.

  137. Marnie says:

    Virtual Pebble says:

Oh, so I guess being legally elected President of the United States of American[s] isn’t an award.
Or has the post forgotten the election already, or are just too accustomed to the idea of having to cheat to win, they don’t need to remember elections.

  138. EugeneDebs says:

    Mr Duke

You are a liar. You are hateful and ignorant and anyone who says different is a liar and a fool. Why not do us a favor and STFU punk

  139. bluesunflower says:

RedState’s Erick Erickson: Obama won because the Nobel Committee had ‘affirmative action quotas.’

Psst, Mr. Erickson? You’re not helping your side any with their strong denial that all their Obama criticism is in any way race related.

Hi, Marnie. You might point your comment at the RNC instead of “the post”. When I quoted “the post” in my comment, that’s the lead article in this thread – in fact, the part that I (literally) quoted has “Update” in a green font at the top of the paragraph. And in fact, I quoted almost the entire “Update” paragraph before making a comment about it.
