Citing ‘Fascism, Socialism, Obamaism,’ Republican Strategist Launches Impeachment Campaign
While the international community is heralding President Obama for his leadership, right-wing activists here in America are clamoring to impeach him. Republican operative Floyd Brown, “one of the nation’s dirtiest political strategists” and the architect of the racially-charged Willie Horton ad against Michael Dukakis, has launched a campaign to impeach Obama. Brown, who registered his impeachment website in August, worked closely with congressional Republicans to push a similar crusade against Clinton, starting in 1994. During the 2008 campaign, Floyd ran commercials claiming Obama is Muslim.
Rather than cite any specific crime, Brown is demanding Obama’s removal for pursuing progressive agenda items like health and clean energy reform. His website blares: “Are you willing to let [Obama] construct a totalitarian regime… fascism, socialism, Obamaism… take your pick?”
Brown, a proud “birther,” explained to radio host Alan Colmes yesterday that he is also outraged because he doesn’t believe Obama was born in America:
COLMES: During the campaign, you were putting out stuff suggesting Obama is Muslim, wasn’t born here, stuff like that. [...]
BROWN: I’m still disputing his birth certificate.
Colmes asked Brown why he had not raised his voice during the Bush presidency, when, for example, Bush went to war in Iraq without a war powers act. Brown failed to dispute that charge, instead mumbling that although he did not want to impeach Bush, “a lot were”:
COLMES: Should Bush have been impeached for going to war without the consent of Congress, without a war powers act being obeyed?
BROWN: You know what, I’m not going to defend Bush because Alan you know as well as I do I didn’t like Bush.
COLMES: Alright, but you weren’t trying to impeach him were you?
BROWN: Uh no, but many were. I wasn’t, but a lot were.
Brown concluded that Obama is “dangerous because he’s not truthful.” Listen here:
Right-wing activists have been demanding the removal of President Obama for months now. In March, tea party rallies featured professionally-produced signs that said, “Obama Bin Lyin’ IMPEACH NOW.” Last week, a Newsmax column argued that a military coup could “resolve” the “radical left…Obama problem.” And right-wing websites, Fox News’ Glenn Beck, and various conservative talk show hosts have floated the idea of armed revolution against President Obama. Some have suggested using violence as a means of “Pulling our government down, pulling our President out, and putting him back where he should be.”
Claiming Brown’s movement is “mushrooming amongst conservative activists,” conservative news site World Net Daily is promoting the impeachment campaign and producing “IMPEACH OBAMA!” bumper stickers. World Net Daily is supported by the national Republican Party through purchases of e-mail address lists.
Brown is a prominent player in Republican circles. The Washington Post reported that Brown helped throw a fundraiser for RNC Chairman Michael Steele when Steele was running for U.S Senate in Maryland. As the former executive director of the Young Americans Foundation, Brown hosted dozens of Republican lawmakers and connected them with conservative youth activists to help them run for office and wage right-wing rallies on college campuses from 2001 to 2006.

Impeachment is, basically, Congressional indictment of an elected official. In order for impeachment to take place, there has to be some substantiated evidence of a crime having taken place. It is not a means to remove someone you don’t like from office. In order to do that, you have several options at your disposal – you can either vote for someone else next time around, campaign for someone else the next time around, or run against him the next time around.
You don’t get to impeach someone because you don’t like him. He was elected, and he’s in office until he’s either voted out of office or reached the term limit established by the Constitution.
Although Congress gets the opportunity to impeach for pretty much whatever they want (much like a Grand Jury can indict for pretty much whatever they want), an elected official is not thrown out of office unless he is convicted by the Senate of the charges upon which he was impeached.
The quick and dirty of it is that he hasn’t committed an impeachable offense, wouldn’t be convicted if impeachment was attempted, and will stay in office until his term or popularity is up.
You don’t get a mulligan on Presidential elections, you idiots.

Clinton was not convicted, nor was he removed from office. They impeached, because they can impeach a ham sandwich for being too tasty if they wanted to (provided the ham sandwich was an elected official, of course), but they couldn’t substantiate the charges and Clinton stayed in office until his term was up.

They started the crusade against Clinton before he had even committed the offense for which he got impeached, making it pretty clear what their agenda was. Therefore, Brown’s efforts can’t be taken seriously. But the sad thing is how he and others like him are cheapening the concept of “impeachment” so badly.

In the 90’s we saw a slow growth of the economy, no major unilateral wars, no economic collapses and a budget surplus. Impeachment time.
From 2001-2009 we saw two new foreign wars, a deficit plundered, our international reputation raped and violations of the Constitution and international treaties. No impeachment.
And now, as we try and dig out of the economic dung heap, try to figure out what to do about the two wars we never should have been in we have the old impeachment call.

You remind me of a funny story. I caught a 42 inch Northern Pike in my duck boat. Two six-foot men plus a three and a half foot fish in a twelve foot boat left us about three feet short of boat. Anyway, my buddy made the mistake of dumping the fish out of the net and all Hell broke loose. Then he panicked, a bit, and was getting ready to hit the fish with the first thing that came to hand. The anchor! I was able to stop his hand but not before I had a very vivid image of him smashing the anchor, and bits of the fish, clean through the bottom of the boat.
Luckily, I managed to grab the fish before any real damage was done. And then the howls of laughter wafted across the water. We had provided some entertainment to the other boats and received a rousing round of applause and cat-calls. And I damn well made sure that I had the billy-club before I set out after Northern Pike again.

It seems as though they are doing a pretty good job of stopping themselves. They have become a fringe party with no signs of returning to the mainstream. We need to be vigilant and keep holding a mirror in front of their faces but, there’s not much “we” can do to “them” that they are not doing to themselves.
NOTE: I would sleep better if fewer of “them” were armed but, I’m armed too.

October 11th, 2009 at 3:15 amEvery time I see the comparison of Obama to Hitler from the right, I just want to go up and strangle them, or at least hit them on the head (they don’t need brain cells, do they?; obviously they’re not using them), and just correct them by saying that idealogy wise, it’s better to compare Hitler to the right (Reich) than the left. I guess they’re still tossing around “Nazism” as a new buzzwork kind of like “Socialism”, but without learning about these systems of government. If they actually did some research (which I doubt they will do), they would learn that Socialsim and Fascism are two very different ends of the political spectrum; granted the left has it’s extremists, Communists and Marxist, but the Right has it’s own form of extremism, which is fascism.
