Pawlenty: The ‘appropriate response’ to Obama winning the Nobel is to say ‘congratulations.’

Tim Pawlenty On his weekly radio show today, a caller asked Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R) about his reaction to President Obama winning the Nobel Peace Prize. Pawlenty departed from his fellow Republicans and replied that the “appropriate response” is to say “congratulations” to Obama:

I would say regardless of the circumstances, congratulations to President Obama for winning the Nobel Prize. I know there will be some people who are saying “Was it based on good intentions and thoughts or is it going to be based on good results?” But I think the appropriate response is when anybody wins a Nobel Prize that is a very noteworthy development and designation and I think the appropriate response is to say “Congratulations.”

He later added that while concerns about the “process” process of how the award was given out are valid, he still thinks anyone who wins the Nobel Prize deserves commendation. Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle (R) also said that he thought it was “great” Obama won.

Update “I do not view it as a recognition of my own accomplishments, but a recognition of the role of American leadership” in the world, Obama said in remarks moments ago. “To be honest, I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many of the transformative figures” who won in the past, he added. “I will accept this award as a call to action, a call to all nations to confront the common challenges of the 21st Century.”
Update Former Nobel recipients President Jimmy Carter and Vice President Al Gore offered their congratulations to Obama today as well.

  10. Marie says:

Well, Pawlenty’s response is a contrast to the sour grapes of most of the repugniscum.
Obama just gave a very humble, gracious acceptance speech – an acceptance of an award on the bahalf of many who are more deserving than himself. He always makes me proud that he is president – his humility, poise, and tact are qualiaties we have missed for many years.
He acknowledges the challenges before him at the moment. I think he was truly surprised, but he remains grounded in where he stands and what are his responsibilities.

  11. Pilotshark says:

Well good on you Gov. Pawlenty and gov. Doyle for being able to see that this is not only good for the president but for us the country as well.
As it sure makes this American very proud. That the world is also recognizing that We The People of the United States are back were we belong as that beacon of hope and porosity.

  15. tom says:

The President just finished giving an eloquent speech ackowledging and accepting this award on behalf of all those who work for peace. He struck the proper tone and sees the award as an aspiration for all to work toward the goals that he has set down in his first year in office. He properly noted that some of those goals will not be accomplished during his presidency; others will not be accomplshed during his lifetime. But the journey has begun.

The whole world has breathed a collective sigh of relief that GDumbya and Darth Cheney are private citizens. Except, of course, for the right-wing rant jockeys who are incensed this morning.

Obama has one piece of unfinished business, however. I think he should contribute the cash award that accompanies the Peace Prize to ACORN. That would kill off the rant-jockeys whose heads have not already exploded.

Now there is an accomplishment that would merit the award in and of itself.

  18. Marie says:

Taking a note from Rep. Grayson’s comments on the House floor last night:
If Obama elliminated world hunger, he would be accused by the repugs of over-population. If he brought about world peace, they would accuse him of decimating the defense industry.
The repugs are incapable of acknowledging Obama in any positive way, so deep is their hatred of him.

I am sure their vile resentment is because the Bush years were so disastrous in every way, that to acknowledge improvement under Obama is to repudiate Bush: one of their own. Repugs can’t do that; so accustomed are they to marching in lock-step. Their position makes them smaller with every passing day, with every nasty comment.

I feel more secure since January 20, 2009 than I have felt in a very long time since President Obama has been working to improve America’s relations with other nations.

And for those who say that he doesn’t deserve the award, Gorbachev won it for the same reason, for easing Soviet relations with other Eastern European nations and for glasnost. Huffpo has a Sam Stein article that points this out.
The Nobel committee that awards the peace prize stated Obama’s efforts to reach out to our world neighbors as a major reason for bestowing the Nobel Peace Prize on him.

I personally think we should leave the partisan bickering out of this and look on it as an a victory for all Americans.

It’s been pointed out that the real purpose of the Nobel Peace Prize is more to highlight what should been done than what has been done. When given for past accomplishments it’s to hold the recipient up an example for others to emulate. But it has in the past sometimes been given to people specifically to promote the goals they’re trying to accomplish, even if they haven’t accomplished them yet.

  67. tim.ned says:

Pawlenty is a first class individual and a great governor. But I’m sure his first action to the news the President received this award, and the action of everyone else, was to google “Why?”.

  68. pbeeg says:

I admit I was surprised by the award–he’s only been in office a short time.
But then I thought: look at it from the rest of the world’s point of view: the most powerful country in the world goes off its rocker, engages in trumped-up imperialistic war, sneers at multilateralism and starts to wave the nuclear battleaxe around, and talks about ‘crusades’ and ‘wars of civilizations.’
And America re-elects the lunatics. Torture, mercenary armies, citizens thrown into military brigs indefinitely. And the most ravening slobbering stuff coming out of their media.
    They’ve seen this before.
And then a black man–a black man!In America!–gets elected, and systematically and quickly turns it around.
From Europe it probably looks like a freakin’ miracle.
I don’t think we realize just how black of a picture the past 8 years have painted elsewhere.

There’s another aspect of the Peace Prize: it’s more of a prize of encouragement than a commemoration. It’s not a Lifetime Oscar. It’s at least partly meant to say ‘More like this, please.’
That’s why Kissinger and Le Duc Tho were awarded the Prize, why Begin and Sadat won it, and why Yasser Arafat, Shimon Peres and Yitzhak Rabin won it–as encouragement.
The argument makes sense: it’s at least as important for world peace when leaders who don’t have an enlightened career turn towards peace.
And in this case at least part of the award is saying to America, “Whew. Don’t scare us like that again, OK?”

  69. Tundra says:

as opposed to protesting the charge?

Oh sorry, didn’t realize that I should give a proper dabate discussion of “Your dumb. neener..neener”

  75. SP Biloxi says:

Can you say, Wow? I am still in shock! What can I say but congratulations to President Obama. And what a way to start off a day with the first black President that will be approaching his first year in office to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Sen. Leahy said this is the USA Today newspaper of his reaction:

“It’s a stunning announcement and it reflects well on America’s ideals and the world’s yearning for American leadership,”he said. “Little is possible without leadership. No one can force other nations to follow, but President Obama is reintroducing America to the rest of the world, and people of goodwill everywhere do have hope about working together for progress on some of the world’s most daunting and dangerous problems.”

And I believe that is what the world was yearning for: Leadership. Shocking indeed. But of course, the right wingnuts will go wild this weekend, their heads will explode from this bit of news, and they will be clinging on to their pearls. Oh and look for this coverage on Sunday bobblehead shows. Much of the media will have eggs on their faces since they have been so much critical of Obama’s Presidency since he has been in office.

  76. pags2 says:

It is good to know that some Republicans are not falling in lock step with the rest of the radical right.

  77. backup says:

“To be honest, I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many of the transformative figures” who won in the past, he added. “I will accept this award as a call to action, a call to all nations to confront the common challenges of the 21st Century.”

President Obama’s sentiment is right on.

I understand the idea that award could be used not only as reward for past accomplishments, but an encouragement to proceed with positive intentions.

Two things that are pretty easy to predict: Whatever percentage of the population that believes in the idea that President Obama is some kind of new world order anti-christ will use this as a strong indication to justify their belief. (That idea is crazy, but those people could be radical enough, ramp up the rhetoric and use this whacked belief to justify crazy action)

Additionally, many on the right will view President Obama’s selection as world meddling in U.S. politics. The rest of the world is more socialized than the U.S. Many in the world, see President Obama as an ally in the effort to make the world more socialized. Conservatives will see the award as a political endorsement from a left leaning world intending to counter anti-socialist forces within U.S. domestic politics.

Regardless of that, Pawlenty is right. President Obama should be congratulated despite the politics. It is positive that the world prefers our current leadership rather than objects to it. The balance comes in the future when we have to consider decisions in which U.S. and world interests are at odds.

I am happy that President Obama improves the sentiment of the rest of the world towards the U.S. I think President Obama is handling the surprising recognition in the exactly the right way. I hope that everyone keeps their expectations of President Obama realistic and I hope that President Obama can meet those expectations.

Congratulations, President Obama. I support you and wish you good fortune in your efforts.

  78. Levi the Oracle says:

In this thread, Zooey pointed out the DNC comment regarding Obama getting the Nobel Peace Prize and it was so good, I wanted to quote it again.

“The Republican Party has thrown in its lot with the terrorists — the Taliban and Hamas this morning — in criticizing the President for receiving the Nobel Peace prize,” wrote DNC Communications Director Brad Woodhouse. “Republicans cheered when America failed to land the Olympics and now they are criticizing the President of the United States for receiving the Nobel Peace prize — an award he did not seek but that is nonetheless an honor in which every American can take great pride — unless of course you are the Republican Party. The 2009 version of the Republican Party has no boundaries, has no shame and has proved that they will put politics above patriotism at every turn. It’s no wonder only 20 percent of Americans admit to being Republicans anymore – it’s an embarrassing label to claim.”

This almost sounds like the Democrats are growing a backbone. If Democrats would start prosecuting Republican torturers and seditionists, I will be convinced there is still hope that America will once again be a nation governed by the rule of law.

  79. Oval12345678 aka James K. Sayre says:

In 1973, the Nobel Committee awarded its Peace Prize to Dr. Henry Kissinger, a lying war criminal who worked for President Richard M. Nixon, another lying war criminal. They both kept the war on the Vietnamese people going for several years after Nixon lied in the 1968 Presidential campaign that he had a secret plan to end the war on Vietnam.

Now, some thirty-six years later, the Nobel Committee has awarded its Peace Prize to another lying war criminal, President Obama. He has escalated his war of genocide against the people of Afghanistan who never attacked us.

    War is Peace.

Who the he** is this Murphis troll – pretty dang painful to read, although that may be the point.

  83. backup says:

Fred. If there is a ‘but’ in there, it’s this:

It’s good that Obama has the support of the world. That is overwhelmingly positive.

President Obama has to make decisions concerning U.S. interests going forward.

I trust him to make wise choices that balance both U.S. interests and the interests of the World. And not to let the interests (or approval) of the World to substantially compromise U.S. interests.

It’s important to be more responsive to the World, but obviously there is a balance between interests that is probably difficult to strike. I believe President Obama is the best person to manage that difficult responsibility.

Not much of a ‘but’. This is good news. One of the positive aspects of President Obama’s presidency, it goes a long way towards repairing the damage done to World opinion of the U.S. under President Bush.

  84. Powkat says:

Isn’t it interesting that in the past 41 years 5 Republican presidents have held office for 28 years and not one of them won a Nobel Peace Prize.

I can see the sock puppet has joined the other anti-american religious fascist groups in attacking our country and our president.

The Republican Party has thrown in its lot with the terrorists — the Taliban and Hamas this morning — in criticizing the President for receiving the Nobel Peace prize,” wrote DNC Communications Director Brad Woodhouse.

Poland’s anti-communist leader Lech Walesa, who won the 1983 Nobel Peace Prize, said Obama’s elevation came too early.

“Who, Obama? So fast? Too fast — he hasn’t had the time to do anything yet,” Walesa told reporters in Warsaw.

The award is given for several reason. One of those is to someone that promotes fraternity in the international community. The election of Obama through is personal and charismatic outreach has created bridges throughout the international community that did not exist. Obama has restored legitimacy to the US as a member of the “international” community that understands diplomacy and not just cowboy stupidity.

Another reason is based on reducing standing armies in conflict. We have withdrawals underway in Iraq, and a serious effort to deal with and reduce wars in Afghanistan.
