Energy Secretary Chu: ‘I Think It’s Wonderful’ That Companies Are Leaving The Chamber Over Its Denialism

Recently, there has been a “business backlash” against the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for its extreme global-warming denier views. Businesses, fed up with the Chamber’s resistance to taking any sort of action to curb carbon emissions, have been leaving the business federation one after another. In the past month alone, Pacific Gas & Electric, Exelon, Public Service Company of New Mexico, and Apple have left the U.S. Chamber of Commerce over its extreme views on climate change.

Yesterday, during a solar energy event at the National Mall, Energy Secretary Steven Chu was asked by a Reuters reporter what he thought about the exodus of businesses from the Chamber. He replied by telling the reporter that he thinks it’s “wonderful” that companies are leaving:

CHU: I think it’s wonderful. I think that companies like that, Exelon, for example, others are saying that we have to recognize reality. In order to position the odd states in an economically competitive place and also to make the world minimize the dangers of significant climate change for our children and grandchildren we’ve got to go in this direction. So they’re saying, we can’t be a party to foot-dragging, to denials to things of that nature.

Listen here:

The Chamber has responded to the business exodus with scorn. After the flight of the most recent company, Apple, U.S. Chamber of Commerce President Tom Donohue bitterly responded, “It is unfortunate that your company didn’t take the time to understand the Chamber’s position on climate and forfeited the opportunity to advance a 21st century approach to climate change.”

Update Yesterday, in a speech on financial reform, President Obama criticized the Chamber for running misleading ads:

And yet, predictably, a lot of the banks and big financial firms don't like the idea of a consumer agency very much. In fact, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is spending millions on an ad campaign to kill it. You might have seen some of these ads -- the ones that claim that local butchers and other small businesses somehow will be harmed by this agency. This is, of course, completely false -- and we've made clear that only businesses that offer financial services would be affected by this agency. I don't know how many of your butchers are offering financial services.

Well then you haven’t checked out to price of prime rib lately. I bought one last week — 20 percent down on the installment plan.

  3. Virtual Pebble says:

Eh, maybe your butcher is running a sports book and a loan sharking operation out of the back room? That’s illegal anyway, in most places, but the point is very well taken, both by our President and Secretary Chu.

The Chamber needs to have it’s toes stepped on, hard, and the only way to do it is hit them in the pocketbook.

I happen to think that anthropogenic climate change is real and accelerating, but that happens to be irrelevant. I prefer to live in a world where the air and water isn’t crapped up with pollutants. A number of people blow that kind of opinion off, but that is misdirected. The corporate leaders who have polluting industries in their folio don’t have to live next to the damned things, so they can pass the give-a-shit attitude off to the rest of their corporation, and we see the result all around us. While the law gives corporations the same status as individuals, corporations are paper and soulless; there’s no ethical or moral consciousness there. That has to be provided by corporate leadership and management and the people in the corporation.

The CEOs and managers that are taking their corporations out of the Chamber should be commended; they’re showing that a business doesn’t have to be a source or pollution in the community. The Chamber doesn’t have to be a cheerleader for polluting activity either, but until they feel the hurt in their membership fees, they won’t turn around; it has to really hurt too, because the current head of the Chamber is a weasel.

  4. SoapBox says:

I’ve said it before…I’ll say it again.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is Anti-American and Anti-American Citizen Worker. Period.

They want a “wild-wild-west” type of business system with no rules or regulations. Period.

ALWAYS REMEMBER, whey you see that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce supports it, it is something very bad for America, Americans and The World.

You can read their slime and propaganda here:
    http://www.uschamber.com/

  5. Virtual Pebble says:

As for the Chamber being against consumer protection, you can’t find a better example of the Chamber head being a weasel. The guy is an advocate of the business version of rip, rape and run. Take the consumers for all they’ve got with cheesy ripoffs, rape the environment, and then run off behind a gate on a large estate where no one can get to you.

He isn’t interested in providing excellence in products or service, assuring customer satisfaction, or staying in business very long at all. He just wants a pile of cash as quick as he can get it, but he’s too much of a weeny to get into the real criminal side of things; hell, he isn’t even much of a businessman. He’s a marketing guy gone bad.

I would recommend the latter. That way, you won’t be posting anymore of your vapid BS here. And your mommy will appreciate it, too, because she won’t have to look at your ugly puss.

  23. Reggie says:

    ginslinger:

There is nothing inconvenient about it, nobody is denying that there have been ice ages in the past.
What you seem to be denying, is that in the last half century we have witnessed an unprecedented loss of ice mass in mountain glaciers.
Scientists have concluded that there is only one possible explanation for that rapid of a loss, a warming due to the rise of CO2 in the atmosphere has melted the glaciers.

Do you have an alternate explanation?

Did God develop a taste for glacial ice in his mixed drinks?

    Were they stolen by UFOs?

Or do you believe they are still there and that David Copperfield made it appear that they melted?

  27. Virtual Pebble says:

    @ 26. Tha choo, vently?

Why yes, it does take money. It takes money to maintain our current infrastructure and money to build new, and it’s going to take money to develop, build and install the technology that reduces the emission of crap into the air and water.

What is it that you don’t understand about wanting to breathe air instead of acid rain, vently. Are you just fracking stupid or some kind of CofC whore? Or perhaps you enjoy the notion of waking up in the morning with some sort of chemical hangover from having drunk tapwater the night before and your eyes, mouth, lungs and nose full of fly-ash from the coalfired power plant down the street? That it, vently? Ya like some shit up your nose and crap in your lungs and a little molecule or two rotting your liver?

And what is it that you don’t understand about the opportunity in retrofittable pollution control technology and the money to be made in clean technology. Oh, sorry, you’re part of the rip, rape and run crowd, aren’t you, vent?

crapslinger – you are a lying SOS. live in Denver, and there is just a dusting of snow – it stopped already. The weather here has been weird all year – cooler than usual, but in other parts of the country (e.g. Ausitn) they have been burning up.

What gets me is why anyone would argue to not try to protect our planet, and to be responsible about what we put into the air, oceans, rivers, lakes, streams, etc. I guess the self-indulged, me-first crowd doesn’t give a rats a$$ about anything or anyone outside of their own retarded circle.

Are you really this dumb or is this a lame act?

  35. mary lacewing says:

The outline of that proposed consumer financial protection agency that Obama was speaking about has apparently been tinkered with by Barney Frank over the last couple of months to the point that some think he’s “gutted” it.

But, even then, guess what? The bankers are STILL against it. And the WSJ came out against it a few days ago (of course).

    NYT article on it.

  36. mary lacewing says:

In recent months, chamber executives have vowed to sue if EPA rejects the chamber’s call for scientific debate

But, but, I thought the business community wanted tort reform to reduce ‘frivolous lawsuits’?

Oh – only when other people are suing THEM! Ah, now I get it.

  37. mary lacewing says:

You see, troll, Barney Frank was probably trying the ‘bipartisan’ approach. Silly man, doesn’t he know by now that no matter how much ground he concedes to the righties it’ll never be enough?

The right-wingers are a bunch of petulant babies.

Waaahhhh! If I don’t get my way I’m going to scream and yell and stomp my feet until I do get my way! That’s the right for ya.

  38. mary lacewing says:

I still haven’t figured out what it is exactly about climate change that brings out so many trolls.

I think it’s fear. It scares them. The climate is changing and they know it’s true. Even the DoD is planning for the future with that knowledge in mind:

The Department of Defense (DoD) believes that supporting climate change initiatives, protecting stratospheric ozone, and preserving military sustainability, operations, and readiness are mutually supportive goals. Climate change and ozone protection are important to DoD for three reasons:

There are potential national security implications of climate change and ozone protection

To sustain training to maintain military readiness, DoD must protect the environment

DoD recognizes that reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing energy efficiency make good business sense.

Why do our trolls hate our military?

Looks like some people are normal and some are stupid.
    End of discussion.

  40. Mike Hunt says:

Who says there’s been no change since Barack took office? I am retired from the US Fish and Wildlife Service. There, before March 1 2008 when I left we were specifically forbidden by the Bushies to talk about climate change let alone global warming (which it really is). Former Senator Ted Stevens’ daughter is (laughably) the Assistant Director for Public Affairs in the agency. Everything that hinted at global climate change/warming had to be personally approved by her (and probably her denier father) before it went out for public consumption.

Now to have a cabinet Secretary say what Chu said is nothing short of a breath of fresh air. And damned well overdue.

Impeccably reliable sources have informed me that as recently as Sept. 30, 2009 – the last possible day of trade in the Sept. 09 gold futures – a number of well-heeled market participants “bought” substantial tonnage worth of gold futures on the London Bullion Market [LBMA] and immediately told their counterparties they wanted to take instantaneous delivery of the underlying physical bullion.

The unexpected immediate demand for substantial tonnage of gold bullion created utter panic in at least two banks who were counterparties to this trade – J.P. Morgan Chase and Deutsche Bank – because they simply did not posses the gold bullion which they had sold short [an illegal act which in trading parlance is referred to as a “naked short”].

and this is kinda funny… not new though…

found in the column along side the story, Obama: Consensus and obstructionism on health care at the miami herald:

In the weekly Republican address Senator George LeMieux acknowledges there are deep problems with the health care system, but says they have to be fixed the right way.

    you know, the RIGHT way…

i’ve been outside all day, and just finished the last batches of the season’s basil pesto… having a rest… later…

    Katy @ 97

Amazing what FOOLS the GNOP have become. I say let them go as far as they want and watch the numbers continue to drop.

6 GOP seats in the Senate look as if they may go dem.

this is a pretty good piece:

Avlon: Extremism in danger of acceptance

    http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/10/07/avlon.civility/

but, once again, and it’s always the right that does it, there’s the attempt to equivocate…

President Bush was subjected to many of these same attacks from the far left — “Bush = Hitler” signs and being called a domestic terrorist. But there is a more widespread fury and fervor being directed at Obama in far less time.

    and is totally UNJUSTIFIED.

see, bush WAS the closest ever to hitler, and he WAS a domestic terrorist… practically…

always with avoiding the facts… the right f’d up, bad, and just can’t face up to it, much less acknowledge and accept responsibility…

    they never accept responsibility…

  89. katy says:

    i’m sorry, had enough… i didn’t see you there at first…
thought i was alone… done with shower… time to kick back…

  90. Virtual Pebble says:

Actually, since this thread is supposed to be about remarks made by Energy Secretary Chu, it’s interesting to note that we now have two Nobel Prize winners in the administration. After all, Steven Chu is a winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics, which he co-won with two others in 1997.

  91. Virtual Pebble says:

@ 100. Katy, I think that comparisons of American politicians, even the Shrub, to Hitler, is not productive; the analogies fall apart on close examination, and I don’t think the Shrub is that sort of personality type anyway.

The Shrub is bullheaded, stubborn, stupid, and error prone, but he isn’t a genocidal murderer. He wasn’t the kind of limitless warmonger that Hitler was. The Iraq war may or may not be a war crime, but if it is, it absolutely pales in comparison to the war crimes inflicted on Europe and the Soviet Union by Hitler and his government. We might also note that the Shrub did the democratic thing at the end of his term of office; he turned over the government to his successor and walked away. Hitler wasn’t about to turn anything over; he blew his brains out and had himself incinerated in a bomb crater in the Reich Chancellery building courtyard; there wasn’t enough of him left to carry out feet first.

It’s certainly the case that President Obama does NOT fit into the category of megalomaniac of any sort. Our righty trolls and their masters do us all a disservice by comparing him to anyone else, but particularly to any of the totalitarian or autocratic dictators who used mass movements to thoroughly screw up the 20th Century.

  92. VibroCount says:

Nice article. Unfortunately, the first paragraph refers to the energy company PG&E as “Pacific Gas & Energy” — when it is Pacific Gas & Electric. A minor quibble, but it’s a big company.

GOD you are stupid. I cant even imagine how stupid you have to be to not be able to tell the difference between weather and climate. I do love to laugh at morons as stupid as you.

  95. Wayne A. Schneider says:

    kwsventures says:

Money runs the world.. You don’t have it? You are a loser, complainer, crybaby probably looking for Uncle Sammy to throw you a bone to keep you content.

Objectively speaking, you have got to be one of the most inhumane people on the planet. I sincerely hope you’re leaving the subject of your children’s moral education to your wife. It’s clearly too late for you, but maybe they won’t grow up to be a greedy, self-absorbed a-hole like you. My hope is that one day your children receive world-wide recognition for trying to do the kind of things people like you abhor, like feeding the starving peple in the world, finding homes for the homeless, expanding education to those who can’t afford to pay for it, and curing diseases. Maybe they’ll win a Nobel Prize for Peace, just like our president, for trying to bring Peace to a world ravaged by War. It would be worth it just to see how pissed off you get.

Oh, and remember one last thing. There’s an old saying: The love of money is the root of all evil. You are contributing to the rise of Evil by your worship of money. You’re probably proud of yourself, too.

    You, sir, are an idiot.
