President Obama received a warm welcome at the Human Rights Campaign’s annual dinner tonight, where he promised to sign hate crimes legislation — which just passed the House — into law and repeal both Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and the Defense of Marriage Act, although he didn’t outline a specific timeline. Acknowledging some frustrations that there hasn’t been quicker action on these issues, Obama reiterated that he remains committed to the fight for LGBT equality:
OBAMA: This story, this fight, continues, now, and I’m here with a simple message: I’m here with you in that fight. (APPLAUSE)
For even as we face extraordinary challenges as a nation, we cannot and we will not put aside issues of basic equality. I greatly appreciate the support I’ve received from many in this room. I also appreciate that many of you don’t believe that progress has come fast enough. I want to be honest about that. (APPLAUSE) Because it’s important to be honest amongst friends.
Obama also addressed right-wing criticisms being hurled at his LGBT nominees and staffers, such as EEOC nominee Chai Feldblum and Department of Education official Kevin Jennings. Both have been the subjects of extremely homophobic slurs. WorldNetDaily editor and CEO Joseph Farrah said that Obama must find “people” like Feldblum on “Perverts.gov,” and the Traditional Values Coalition wrote that she wanted “the gay agenda to trump the First Amendment and religious freedom.” Rep. Steve King (R-IA) has claimed that Jennings wants to push a “homosexual agenda” in U.S. schools.
While Obama didn’t specifically point to any of his nominees, he strongly reiterated his support for them and condemned homophobic slurs:
OBAMA: For the first time ever, an administration official testified in Congress in favor of this law. Nobody in America should be fired because they’re gay, despite doing a great job and meeting their responsibilities. It’s not fair, it’s not right, we’re going to put a stop to it. (APPLAUSE)
And it’s for this reason if any of my nominees are attacked not for what they believe but for who they are, I will not waver in my support because I will not waver in my commitment to ending discrimination in all its forms. (APPLAUSE)
Watch it:

I also appreciate that many of you don’t believe that progress has come fast enough. I want to be honest about that. (APPLAUSE) Because it’s important to be honest amongst friends.
Now, I said this before, I’ll repeat it again. It’s not for me to tell you to be patient, anymore than it was for others to counsel patience to African-Americans petitioning for equal rights half a century ago. (APPLAUSE) But I will say this: We have made progress, and we will make more, and I think it’s important to remember that there is not a single issue that my administration deals with on a daily basis that does not touch on the lives of the LGBT community. [...]
For the first time ever, an administration official testified in Congress in favor of this law.
(APPLAUSE)
I am glad that Obama let LGBT know that he is in this fight with them and not against them to end discrimination and not by themselves. There has been a lot of criticisms afgainst Obama being too slow in the fight for discrimination against LGBT and don’t ask don’t tell policy. But, people have to keep in mind that there are many lawmakers in Congress and Senate that are not on board of provide equal rights for LGBT.

The anti-gay adds on TV in my state are basically this message: “If they pass this law, it will FORCE your children to get gay-married!”
With all the class warfare though I don’t think equal rights is even possible. For example, rich people never need to steal to get their drugs, they just get their doctor friends to write it for them. This country hasn’t ever had equal rights for all citizens. ever.

The women do – so it’s time to repeal the DADT. After all we do live in the 21st century – not the 19th. Now toddle-off and take your hate elsewhere.
President Obama received a warm welcome at the Human Rights Campaign’s annual dinner tonight, where he promised to sign hate crimes legislation…
– - I love the guy, but Obama’s HRC speech was strictly boilerplate stuff.
He says he will end Don’t Ask Don’t Tell but he has done nothing, and he offered no time-line, no deadline HRC for action and no verifiable record that he has done anything, despite his claims that he has.
He says he is ending the HIV ban, but it is still in force, a year and a half after it was signed by George W. Bush and passed by massive majorities in both houses.
He says he favors equality for gay couples but said nothing tonight to support the initiatives in Maine or in Washngton State or the struggle in Washington DC for marriage equality. That’s a test of real sincerity on this matter. He failed it.
He says he wants to end discrimination in employment even as he is firing more gay people solely for being gay than any other employer in the country – as commander-in-chief. And if an employer is firing gay people all the time, is it tolerable to accept as a response that he will stop doing it one day – but gives no time-line at all?
October 10th, 2009 at 10:04 pmNobody in America should be fired because they’re gay, despite doing a great job and meeting their responsibilities. It’s not fair, it’s not right, we’re going to put a stop to it.
Then, this too should apply for the military…
October 10th, 2009 at 10:05 pmIf Obama wavered in support, he would appear weak in the eyes of the majority.
I say to the religious right: bring it on. Let’s watch some more of your numbers drop.

October 10th, 2009 at 10:18 pmI would say that most of us who actually wore a uniform in the service of our country know or knew someone in our unit(s) on the DL, and really didn’t give a damn.
What mattered to me was that the soldier covering my back knew what he/she was doing. Everything else just wasn’t an issue.
I’m a straight, white guy in my 50’s and just can’t understand why those of my generation feel threatened by whom someone else chooses to love.
Just flat-out f’n stupid, if you ask me.
October 10th, 2009 at 10:22 pmBTW, please notice that I did not say “the gender toward which one is attracted,” as I don’t believe this is a choice, but, rather, a location on a continuum.
Sorry for any confusion
October 10th, 2009 at 10:27 pmhad enough @24,
agreed.
My only question to our President is, “Sir, at what point do you finally tell the lunatics that ‘this is the way we’re going. you can either ride along, or get stuffed.’?
It’s obvious that if the man said the sun was coming up in the morning, the asshats would disagree, just to be snarky to the ni66er.
The hell with what they say! They are in the extreme (albeit VERY vocal) minority, and, at this point, really don’t matter worth a half of a sh*t.

I will protect my President, my Constitution, and my Country from the likes of the craven, cowardly chicken-hawks any day, any time, anywhere. And, btw, that includes our cowardly trolls posting their vitriol “Live from Mama’s Basement.” (which, I would assume, includes our trolls hereon. October 10th, 2009 at 11:11 pmAmerica hasn’t lost any wars lately. We won the war in Iraq in like 3 weeks. Afghanistan will always be a quagmire, 60,000 troops won’t help, 600,000 troops wouldn’t help. Anyways why is the right so against war now? Did they forget they started it and funded it without thinking? I think thats what burns liberals the most.

October 11th, 2009 at 12:04 amThere have always been gays in the military. It has never made one whit of difference to the outcome of any war or battle. Forget don’t ask, don’t tell, it’s time to move to don’t worry about it. Now if there are concerns that folk of either sex, or any sexual orientation , would force their sexual intentions on another, that is a whole different issue. Rape and sexual harassment should be prevented and are a threat to a soldier’s security. I support the prevention and prosecution of such. I’m also willing to bet that the vast majority of such incidents are heterosexual.

October 11th, 2009 at 12:21 amI don’t know about “right now,” however, as recently as under George W. Bush, interpreters/translators of Arabic in the military and intelligence services were fired for being gay, despite these very services’ lack of people fluent in Arabic and other languages used in the Middle East and Afghanistan. In other words, gays were considered more dangerous than Al Qaeda and the Taliban. Perhaps you ought to get “up to speed” on issues before trolling here.

repugs have proven that stupid can go on forever; this is reason their asses are considered conservatives. repugs mode of thinking is slow or in regression or stuck on another planet.
They prove stupid is innate every time they make up bs on TP/PB and in the msm.
October 11th, 2009 at 2:29 amIs there anybody left that Republicans don’t hate?
October 11th, 2009 at 4:51 amYes. Little boys and hookers.
October 11th, 2009 at 5:32 amFetuses, maybe.

October 11th, 2009 at 5:34 amIf you change Obama to Bush in the above paragraph it describes the Republican party very well. Hence I would conclude:
Therefore it is self-evident that calvaresed is a non-self-aware and judgmental Republican who like a blind sheep followed and enabled GWB’s immorality for eight years.
So, calvaresed, how do you justify your immorality as related to your enabling GWB’s immorality?

You MORON. Idiotic, monumentally stupid punks like YOU are why the country is in such bad shape

October 11th, 2009 at 8:28 amIt’s my hope Obama tackles DADT/DOMA after health care reform is signed into law. That way, he’ll have the national dialogue going on in the spotlight for DADT and the DOMA which it deserves.

You people are so silly and uneducated.
Silly? Yes. Yes I am. I’ll be the first to admit that. Uneducated? Hardly.
You are all blind sheep following a wolf named Obama.
Well, that one is completely wrong from start to finish.
The truth is, it is easy to follow someone who stands for immorality if that is how you choose to live your life.
That would explain why the Republican Party still has so much support.
Everyone finds a way to justify their own immorality.
Immorality is in the eye of the condemner.
I am not perfect, but I will never make excuses for my sin.
My religious beliefs do not include the concept of “sins”, so I cannot be guilty of committing them. I do agree that I’m not perfect, but I never claimed to be. You, OTOH, are judging others which, I believe, your religion tells you not to do. (My religious beliefs impose no such restriction.)
You just go ahead and have a nice day now. Have fun in Purgatory.
October 11th, 2009 at 9:52 amI thought aaronk had 12 people working for him. Could he have meant something else? Real employers know the answers to these questions.
The sad truth is that in right to work states, which are generally red states like okla, you can be fired for any reason or no reason at all. Employees have no rights at all.
no recourse. No place to hear your side of the story. It doesn’t matter. The employer is god.
October 11th, 2009 at 10:08 amMakes sense. Fetuses are still in their pure, conservative state.
Once they are born and experience the world, they immediately start learning about it, which tends to make them more liberal.
That’s why conservatives who reach adulthood as conservatives are so determined to not learn anything more about the world. It messes up their ideology.
October 11th, 2009 at 10:30 amFred
Actually the sad fact is in ANY state unless you are under a contract like a union contract you can be fired for ANY reason except the few specified in civil rights law.

If God was going to parse sins, sexual conduct would not even make the top 10. There are a lot more acts that are far worse, such as war, greed, indifference, apathy, etc. Even if gay sexual conduct were a major sin, it pales in comparison to the acts of hetero adultery which are very common. You need to get your sins sorted out properly.

Yup. George Bush. WMD. Iraq invasion. Bin Laden/Bush business PARTNERS. Exposing CIA spy. 5000 US Soldiers, 1000000 Iraqis DEAD, shredding of the constitution.
Pat Tillman killed by “friendy” fire, Bush refuses to reveal details, citing “executive privilege”.
Sheep? Yup. YOU. Another TRAITOR, just like Bush and Cheney and Reagan.
October 11th, 2009 at 12:38 pmThe wrong question is being asked, but that’s not unusual.
The question being asked is, “Should gays be allowed to serve?” That’s just stupid.
The question that should be asked is, “Why are a pack of homophobic bigots allowed to dictate who may and may not serve in OUR nation’s military?”
Just to note background, I’m an old straight fart and a vet, but my gay friends and acquaintances are citizens; some are much better citizens than I. Some of them did serve, keeping it even more closeted than those younger members of the service who have had DADT inflicted on them. Every citizen should have the right and privilege to serve in the armed forces, and no citizen should have the right to unilaterally say another citizen cannot serve.

Dear Cesspool Troll,
Time for today’s English-for-idiots lesson. The word you are looking for is you’re, the contractive form of YOU ARE. your is an adjective, usually indicating the possessive sense. We have to examples of the differing usage;
You’re full of shit, Cesspool Troll.
and
Your stench is like unto a cesspool, Troll.
See the difference? Troll?
October 11th, 2009 at 1:24 pm@ 130. Correction; that should be “two examples”, not “to examples”. You gotta stay on top of that shit, Cesspool Troll.
October 11th, 2009 at 1:26 pmRight wingers enjoy showing their stupidity to others.
October 11th, 2009 at 1:29 pmIf Obama is determined to end “don’t ask don’t tell”, why doesn’t someone give him a pen? He is Commander in Chief of the military, and he has the power to issue an Executive Order undoing this stupid policy. The fact that he hasn’t already exercised this power indicates he has no intention of doing so.
October 11th, 2009 at 2:04 pmObama cannot end DADT because it is a federal statute. He only has powers to stop discharges from the military.
October 11th, 2009 at 3:19 pmI am always amazed at the sheer number of deeply closeted men in the repiggie ranks. There are so many wonderful gay people throughout this nation whose best interests are betrayed so cravenly by these deeply closeted phonies.
It seems quite rare these days to meet a hetero male repiggie these days who doesn’t have some sort of sexual kink or a history of infidelity.
Ironically, the Dems, the party which doesn’t do a total freak-out each week on “sexual immorality” and the like, have the greatest number of men who don’t cheat on their wives or behave like scumbags.
I hope that the Obama administration will show a bit more courage and leadership on full civil rights for gays, because this will ensure full civil rights for all in our society.
The repiggies are utterly hopeless in this regard, as they are in so many important issues of the day.
October 11th, 2009 at 3:58 pmI wouldn’t let this guy Jennings anywhere near children, much less name him ‘Safe School Czar’! Maybe ‘queering of the schools czar’ would be more appropriate. gögüs estetigi
